The US Senate voted to advance the Respect for Marriage Act, which would codify the right to marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples. The same-sex marriage bill passed in the US Senate by 61-36 votes on Tuesday, with all but one Democrat voting in its favor. Twelve Republican senators, including Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, voted against the Respect for Marriage Act. The 62-37 vote was a crucial test of support for the bill, which was easily cleared the 60-vote procedural vote.
The House passed legislation that would federally protect same-sex and interracial couples, voting 258 to 169 to clear the vote. The bill reflects a shift among Republicans on same-sex marriage as public opinion polls have shown that a majority of the party supports it.
The Marriage Amendment Bill, which allows same-sex and transgender couples to marry, was passed last night in Parliament, 77 votes to 44. The bill passed with support from 39 Republicans, down from the 47 who voted for it in July.
