ABBA, a Swedish pop group, was formed in 1971 by Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog. The couple married in 1978, but after just two years of marriage, they divorced in 1979. This led to the band’s split in 1980, with both members working on solo albums. The breakup is believed to have been caused by the divorces of both couples, as well as Anni-Frid and Agnetha working to pursue solo projects.
ABBA’s two marriages and divorces were the main reasons behind their heartbreaking breakup that lasted nearly 40 years. The band claims they never officially broke up, as they felt the energy was running out in the studio and didn’t have as much fun in the studio as they did this time. Despite going their separate ways, the band claim they never officially broke up.
The band’s new album, Voyage, is set to drop on November 5, 2021, with two songs, “I Still Have Faith in You” and “Don’t Shut Me.” The band has faced numerous personal struggles, including failed marriages, suicide, and a stalker affair. The breakup was caused by the emotional turmoil of divorce in general, rather than any specific personal issues.
ABBA returned to the studio in 1982 but realized that it wasn’t any longer fun being Abba with both couples now divorced. After reconciling a few years ago, the band claimed they never officially broke up.

After just under 10 years of world-dominating hits, ABBA called it a day in 1983 – a couple of years after both couples had split.
Were the ABBA girls lovers?
Yet on the most fundamental level, ABBAs heterosexuality is more overt than the straightest rock dudes. Even before the groups 1974 Eurovision breakthrough, Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus were romantic partners; so were Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson. Both couples married, and their musical nuances multiplied, climaxing in 1980s anguished “The Winner Takes It All” just as Fältskog and Ulvaeus finalized their split; the next year, Lyngstad and Andersson divorced as well. “We will never re-form,” Ulvaeus told me when I interviewed him in 1994. “Why would we?”
As its first-name acronym implies, ABBA was from its beginning a supergroup: The guys had been in successful bands; the gals were solo stars — even as a teen, Fältskog penned some of her hits. Ulvaeus and Andersson wrote, produced and played on the songs, but Fältskog and Lyngstads vocal synchronicity drove them so fiercely that sexual liberation anthems like “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” seem queer-tailor-made. Lesbian separatists and gay male misogynists might grumble, but most of us relish ABBAs unmatched gender parity and equality. Being strong women and sensitive men who love and respect one another is central to the groups alchemy as well as its enduring LGBTQ appeal: This is who we are too, and how we want the world to be.
And its fueled their reconciliation. “There was a union of heart and mind / The likes of which are rare and oh so hard to find,” Lyngstad recalls of the bands past on “Voyages” “I Still Have Faith in You.” Her voice more fragile than before, she nevertheless manifests firm knowingness. “Do I have it in me?” she asks aloud with Fältskog, and in that moment, their merger vanquishes uncertainty.
Are ABBA still friends?
“It’s about realizing we’re in a unique place,” Ulvaeus said while promoting the album last fall. “It’s hard to imagine releasing an album after 40 years and still being best friends.”
Do ABBA still talk to each other?
Frida and I are still friends and Im still a member of ABBA. We are still good friends, but we are not married anymore.
Their divorce reportedly came quickly, after Benny told Frida that he had met someone else. That person was TV producer Mona Norklit, whom he married later in 1981.
He continued: We discussed what was going to remain in the group in spite of all we have been through. We decided to stay together for the sake of the music.
Frida added: Now that Benny and I have broken up, we are able to work much better together. Our relationship is not as intense as it was, but we are still in contact.
Did the ladies of ABBA get along?
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — The two women members of 1970s hit group ABBA have denied rumors that they are enemies. In a joint interview published Friday, Agnetha Faltskog, 58, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 63, set the record straight. A lot has been written about how Agnetha and I fought. That’s not true, Lyngstad said in an Aftonbladet interview. We competed, but it was good for us. Lyngstad and Faltskog formed ABBA with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
Why did ABBA marriages fail?
In 1974, ABBA won Sweden’s Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Waterloo.” In 2005, it was voted the best song in the contest’s history. The band consisted of two married couples during its active years. Fältskog and Ulvaeus, and Lyngstad and Andersson. As their popularity grew, their personal lives fell apart. The group’s music reflected the changes in their relationships. After ABBA disbanded in 1982, Andersson and Ulvaeus continued writing music for different audiences, while Fältskog and Lyngstad pursued solo careers. Ten years after the group broke up, a compilation was released, becoming a best-seller. In 1999, ABBA’s music was adapted into Mamma Mia!, a stage musical that has been touring worldwide since 1999. It is still in the top ten longest running productions on both Broadway and the West End. The 2008 film was the highest-grossing film in the UK that year. Mamma Mia! 2 Here We Go Again came out in 2018. ABBA is one of the best-selling music artists in history, with record sales estimated at 150 million to 385 million worldwide. The group was the third best-selling singles artist in the United Kingdom with 11.3 million singles sold by November 2012. In May 2023, ABBA was awarded the BRIT Billion Award for surpassing one billion UK streams in their career.ABBA were the first non-English-speaking group to have hits in English-speaking countries. They are the best-selling Swedish band and the best-selling band from Europe. ABBA had eight UK number-one albums. The group also had success in Latin America, where they recorded some songs in Spanish. ABBA was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, the first non-English artists to receive this honor. In 2015, their song “Dancing Queen” was inducted into the Recording Academy’s Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2016, the group reunited and started working on a digital concert tour. New songs were announced in 2018. Voyage, their first new album in 40 years, was released in November 2021. ABBA Voyage, a concert residency featuring ABBA as virtual avatars, opened in May 2022 in London.
Did anyone in ABBA date each other?
ABBA were unique for so many reasons. Not only for their one-of-a-kind infectious pop classics, but also for how they functioned as a band made out of two couples.
The foursome consisted of already-married Agnetha Faltskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who were a couple by the time the group formed in the early 1970s.
But after just under 10 years of world-dominating hits, ABBA called it a day in 1983, a couple of years after both couples had split.
ABBA tried to make it work despite the divorces within the band, but it was doomed to fail with such high stakes, particularly as Bjorn and Agnetha also all had children.
When did ABBA break-up and why?
At the height of the groups fame both couples divorced, one in 1980 and the other a year later. The band went their separate ways in 1982, with Faltskog saying that she found it hard being in the band after her break-up.Faltskog fell in love with Ulvaeus at 19, after meeting him in a cafe. They were married in 1971 and ABBA won the Eurovision in 1974.
She told that she was emotionally mangled by the split with Bjorn, who was the father of her two children.Just weeks after their divorce, Ulvaeus had a new girlfriend and Faltskog had counselling.Their hit The Winner Takes It All was written during this period and Faltskog said she found it hard to find the emotional strength to sing: Tell me does she kiss/Like I used to kiss you? While talking about the song in 2013, Faltskog said: Bjorn wrote it about us after the breakdown of our marriage. The fact he wrote it exactly when we divorced is touching really.I didnt mind. It was fantastic to do that song because I could put in such feeling. I didnt mind sharing it with the public. It didnt feel wrong. There is so much in that song. It was a mixture of what I felt and what Bjorn felt but also what Benny and Frida went through. After a tour, the band returned to the studio in 1982, but realised that, with both couples now divorced, it was no longer any fun being ABBA.Faltskog also spoke about how her split from Ulvaeus was painted as a happy divorce but that it was anything but.In 2000, amid a revival of several of their hits, an American-British consortium offered the group $1 billion to reunite for 100 shows, but they declined the offer. Its a hell of a lot of money to say no to, but we decided it wasnt for us, Andersson told.Faltskog told source: We said no because they wanted 250 shows or something, it was incredible. No chance.ABBA still has millions of fans worldwide and their latest compilation album, ABBA Gold, stayed in the charts for more than 400 weeks.Speaking about the bands comeback, Ulvaeus, 76, told Zane Lowe that things had felt natural when they began recording together again.Ulvaeus said: I looked around and I looked into Agnethas eyes and Fridas eyes and there was the same kind of feeling, the warmth and the friendship and the bonds, between us that, as you suddenly realise no one on earth has experienced this kind of relationship that we have because, thinking about it, its true, nobody else has.Sadly, people die and they dont stay on friendly terms for their whole lives, but we have. And Im so incredibly happy for that.Despite going their separate ways, the band claim they never officially broke up.Ulvaeus said: We ended, and for creative reasons. We ended because we felt the energy was running out in the studio, because we didnt have as much fun in the studio as we did this time. And thats why we said, Lets go on a break. And we never said, this. Weve split and well never reunite again. We never said that. We just said back then that wed go on a break. And this break has now ended. Sounds strange.

📹 Who CHEATED in ABBA?!
Who CHEATED in ABBA?! Hello there, and welcome to Celeb Vibe! ABBA Has had an interesting history when it comes to their …
Lots of speculations from people outside the relations.I’ve followed these guys since the 1960-ies and they have never made me disappointed. I’m in Bennys age and as I know, in spite of their fame and fortune, they are all four still close and dear friends, and very natural and down to earth. One has to remember that Björn and Agnetha have two children together, Linda Elin and Peter Christian and grandchildren too. They meet now and then on special occations. Björn said recently, when they made their latest album ‘Voyage’, after not having produced anything as ABBA since 1982 : We all four feel deep respect and loyalty to each other, and enjoy being with each other. Voyage was produced in 5 weeks with work from breakfast to dinner, and we all felt it was like we’d left the studioo yesterday and not forty years ago. Fantastic.
From what I’ve read, it’s been more of a shocker that Frida and Benny broke up. The break up between Agnetha and Bjorn was expected because they seemed to be so different for many years. Agnetha sang the winner takes it all because Bjorn wrote for her to sing it. She accepted the fact that it would be a challenge to sing the song.
Bjorn didn’t cheat. Agnetha & Bjorn separated (sadly) on Christmas eve. Born met Lena, a week later at Benny & Frida’s New Years Eve party. It was Benny who cheated. Frida was completely shocked & devastated when Benny came home and ended their marriage because he had fallen in love with Mona. Both of the girls were victims of intense heartache because insensitive Bjorn moved on too quickly from Agnetha and cruel Benny betrayed Frida. I’ve loved ABBA since the early 70’s. Agnetha was always my favourite because of her devotion to her children. I could never get my head around the fact that Frida left her two young children without a mother, to pursue fame as a singer.
People love to go after Bjorn, but from what I’ve read he and Agnetha married very young and became incompatible fairly early in their marriage. They tried to save it, but it just didn’t work out. In the end someone had to pull the plug, and it was Agnetha who eventually made the decision. People forgot that while Agnetha sang Winner Takes It All, Bjorn wrote it. He also wrote If It Wasn’t for the Nights about the divorce.
I’m not ready to jump on the poor poor Agnetha bandwagon. Both she and Bjorn worked very hard to save their marriage and although they decided it was best to split it was never because of a lack of communication. As they continued to work together in ABBA I saw a lot of warmth and tenderness between the two of them. It always seemed like they had each others backs even if they were moving in different directions. I think their maturity, professionalism and mutual respect were impressive to say the least. In the case of Benny and Frida I suspect they had very little communication at the end. Frida was deeply hurt and Benny was almost spiteful in his refusal to show any sadness or regret. It is almost impossible for any individual to survive a breakup without some regretful behavior or mud-throwing……but Swedes are very pragmatic about divorce. Time has also been very friendly to them. I think there is much to admire here
Anna gets all the sympathy for “The Winner Takes It All” with people saying how brave she was to sing this song but people forget that it was Bjorn who wrote the song from His perspective and to have her sing “Tell me does she kiss, like I used to kiss you, does it feel the same, when she calls your name” was extremely painful for Him. As the girls are the main singers he couldn’t have Anna sing Does “He” kiss you because lyrically that would make it sound like he left her for another man so hence “She”. But it is Bjorn who felt all the angst & pain when writing the song and hearing Anna putting the blame on him every time she sang the song. Alas tho in every breakup there Is always a Winner & a Loser which makes this song so beautiful
Has anyone else thought that their marriages were part of the ABBA business model? Agnetha was legitimately married to a much older Bjorn. He was the brains behind ABBA. Bjorn worked well with Benny, who I honestly think is gay. Frida’s Nazi father (not her fault) was ignored; much like her own past. Frida was previously married, but chose to leave her husband and 2 children to pursue her career. Frida and Benny’s marriage was part of the ABBA persona. You know, 2 married couples, everybody’s happy…etc. Benny and Frida had no romantic relationship. Purely business. Bjorn probably ran Agnetha as he did ABBA. Very efficiently.
Frida is the one that most people truly love best. Frida had the toughest childhood, and the most deaths to family members near to her, yet Frida emerged as the most mature, loving, self confident, and wonderful person of all. She was always ready to keep the group together, when ever Agnetha wasn’t pouting, and Frida never put blame on Benny for leaving her, although she certainly could have.
As much as i appreciate ABBA voyage its just not enough i really wanna see a full return from them even if their together for a year because they still have it in them Agnetha and frida still sound exactly the same as they did in the 1970s its not too late but like for some reason their so reluctant to return for anything even the 50th anniversary for Waterloo which shocked the fucking hell out of me when benny said no like bro wdym no you all still have it in you they act like the years ABBA were together were the worst days of their life and it just makes me think well why do it then and i really love ABBA and i really wanna see them return
Dude, Agnetha is pronounced: An-yeet-ah. You disgrace her, the group, and the fans with your incorrect pronunciation of her name! If you’re going to try to slander the group, or dig up dirt on them, at least do the research, and get it done accurately! This is a pathetic attack on a nice person, who you don’t deserve to know! Take this article down!
