Brida, a free woman from the English Saxons, was hunted down by Welsh Kings men who wanted to take her as their captive. She begged Uhtred to kill her so she could go to Valhalla. In season 4, Brida held a grudge against Uhtred for not killing her when she was found by the Welsh in battle. After their final fight, Uhtred offered to help Brida reconnect with her old self. However, Uhtred disguised Brida as a Saxon witch and delivered her to Storri, who vouched for Uhtred and took them to meet.
In season 5, Brida plotted revenge on Uhtred, coaxing him into the forest they traveled together in their youth. She dug a grave for their final fight to the death, but he refused. Her anger towards Uhtred is more complicated and layered than we think. She constantly saw it as a letdown and betrayal for her and Ragnar.
Uhtred’s time as a galley slave was filled with starvation, brutality, and suffering, culminating in the horrendous death of poor Hallig. Brida and Ragnar eventually managed to free Uthred, but Brida blamed Uhtred for allowing her to live and become a slave. She begged for Uhtred to kill her so her soul would be sent to Valhalla.
Brida’s anger towards Uhtred was fueled by her hatred of Christians and the loss of Ragnar. Uhtred’s change of allegiance to the Anglo-Saxons, Bridas hatred of Christians, and the loss of Ragnar caused her to become a bitter and cruel warrior.
In season 6, Brida swore revenge on Uhtred for not killing her and sending her to join Ragnar. He lost the relationship he had with Brida and Ragnar just to keep a promise.

Is Father Beocca based on a real person?
This fictional story is interesting, but it’s not as interesting as the real people in this story. There’s Father Beocca in “The Last Kingdom.” He may be fictional, but there was a real Father Beocca who was Alfred the Great’s spiritual mentor and died a martyr. He was made a saint of the Church. I always set my clicker to “stun” when I watch religious people in popular entertainment. Especially if they’re priests. I brace myself for priests who are evil, buffoons, or rebels who deny Church teachings. The Last Kingdom makes me think of Father Beocca. He’s not innocent. He isn’t corrupt. He must help Alfred become the king God wants, not just the man he is at the start of the series. Alfred is also shown in different ways. He tries to be good but often does bad things. Father Beocca helps him build up again.
Why does Brida blame Uhtred for everything?
Brida married Ragnar, son of Earl Ragnar. Brida blamed Uhtred for Ragnar’s death. Brida led a Danish conquest with her new husband, Cnut. Brida was defeated and asked Uhtred to kill her and send her to Valhalla, but he refused. In season 5 of The Last Kingdom, Brida plotted revenge against Uhtred. This quest also ended in defeat and the death of Brida’s daughter, Vibeke. Brida got Uhtred to come fight her in the forest where they used to travel together as children. She dug a grave and planned for one of them to die in the fight. The one who died would end up in the grave. They would go to Valhalla, as they died a warrior’s death. Brida didn’t want to kill Uhtred; she just wanted him to kill her. After their final fight, Uhtred could not kill Brida. Instead, they made up. Uhtred said he’d help Brida get her old self back.
Uhtred’s daughter Stiorra shot Brida with an arrow, leaving her to die in Uhtred’s arms. Stiorra killed her mother because of what happened before when Uhtred killed Sigtryggr. Stiorra blamed Brida for everything, including Sigtryggr’s death. Brida deserved her fate as much as any other main character, but her death was the most tragic of The Last Kingdom season 5. After years of pain and hatred, Brida finally forgave Uhtred and wanted to change. When she was denied that opportunity, it was heartbreaking for Uhtred because he believed in her.
Why did Brida turn evil?
Brida killed her partner Cnut at Tettenhall. She learned that he had killed her true love Ragnar. Brida was left alone after having a baby with Cnut. When the Danes were defeated at Tettenhall, Brida asked Uhtred to kill her before she was captured. Brida was imprisoned, abused, and humiliated by the Welsh. This made her more prejudiced. After Sigtryggr freed her, she joined him in raiding Saxon and Welsh villages. Sigtryggr’s army and Brida stormed Winchester after they heard that King Edward was in Aylesbury settling the matter of Mercian succession. They took Edward’s family and Uhtred’s daughter hostage. Brida tried to behead Stiorra, but Sigtryggr stopped her. He fell in love with her over the course of the 30-day siege. At the end of the season, Stiorra went with Sigtryggr to York. King Edward was stuck outside the city. Sigtryggr made Edward choose between his sons, but Edward couldn’t. Uhtred offered to be the boy’s replacement, and Sigtryggr agreed. Brida wanted to kill Uhtred, but Sigtryggr stopped her and made a truce. She was last seen pregnant and vowing to be Uhtred’s undoing.

The best series I have ever watched nothing seems to compare to the acting and producing of this . I felt this series draw me into it as if I was actually along side every actor .. amazing truly just amazing .. BTW I watch 5 series in 4 days there was no switching it off . Never have I liked history in my 51 years now I cannot get enough, would be absolutely brilliant to have a series going thru all the centuries .
Seriuosly tho, I just finished binge perusal all 3 seasons of the last kingdom in 5 days and I’ve never looked it up trailers or anything like that and today I get this in my recommended .. How does YouTube know ? Thats how u know everyone is spying and sharing info for real . what other explanation is there ?
I am 31 generations descended from Uhtred and, thru his issue, Earls of Dunbar, Lothian and Wedderburn. The son (James Hume) of the 9th Baron of Wedderburn came to America in 1682 on the Caledonia but died (as did his wife) during the crossing, leaving their 12-year old daughter an orphan. 10 years later she married Thomas Hoge who crossed over on the same ship and also lost his father when at sea.
I firstly want to thank you! You and few other websites gave me motivation to try making this kind of content myself! I love history and I love perusal your articles, but sometimes you post things I am not interested in, so I make them my own! I love your content Your animations are smooth, information is not very complex, but it contains everything needed. Keep up the good work!
For all u Vikings and Last Kingdom fans. Once u finish both series, watch Norsemen. Played by actual Norwegian actors and actresses. Puts a totally different and hilarious take on Norsemen life. The first episode will reel u in. Later there’s an interesting take on Norsemen v Norsemen battles. Enjoyed all 3 series btw..
I’ve just started perusal this again.I lived on the doorstep of BABAMBA. TO REMEMBER HOW TO SPELL IT!…K.N.A Bamborough Castle today. And places like Lindisfarne, holy island, where I want my ash’s scattered, that features more in Vikings,York,Northumbria, ect,I never realised I had such a cultured heritage!! Grandad was a WW1 hero, dad a fighter pilot, husband, a soldier in Afghanistan, sadly shot by the Taliban..But this made me SO very proud of my English heritage. I was born in Lundun,as they call it,my sister lives in Cornwallen as they called it,and I now reside in Wales.Really made me sit and think about our 1,000 yrs of British Monachy! I see that they now made series 4,cant wait to see it!London
The surname de Neville comes up after 1066 in Northumbria and holds the seat of Babbenbourgh. The anglosaxon married a norman and kept his arms but took her surname because it was more fortuitous to have a norman surname at that time. Proof of being of the line of Uhtrid is not documented, but it’s possible. Something to investigate if you like genealogy and history.
My favorite fiction authors are Bernard Cornwell and Brian Lumley. Only Lumley’s “Necroscope” series, but all of Cornwell’s, except, I must admit, his boating books. Sean Bean got me started on the “Sharpe” series. The third season of “The Last Kingdom” wasn’t much like the novels, but I guess that’s what “based on” means.
Totally underrated. I found it after GOT blew the fans up I still hate you D & D!! I just love the cinematography also besides all the other good things about LK. Finan, Sihtric, Baby Monk. The cinematography the great overhead shots when they are taking off for battle. When Skorpa and Uhtred joined sides that BIG turn. When Asser, Hild and Halig took off with Alfred’s letter. I just love the way this was shot!!!!!!! and what can you say about Alexander D. I love the accent he came up with. Oh all the actors Eliza Butterworth… Opera Singer yes she is… as Aelswith!! So good.
Watch with CC for hilariously misspelled names for Uhtred, too numerous to list, but my favorites might be “sutra,” “you treat,” “boot woods, and “ooh turrets.” Viking raids” become “banking rates,” and Eldred” is “ill droid.” It would be quite confusing with no sound! But it is an interesting article.
WAIT a minute!! So, you’re telling me that the actual “Uhtred of Bebbanburg” aka “Uhtred The Bold” was active something like 100 years AFTER the events of The Last Kingdom TV series and (I’m assuming) the books series as well?? YES I KNOW that The Last Kingdom is historical fiction but, damn….this is all literally like only 66 years or so before William The Conqueror comes a callin’ and changes English history forever. *mind blown*
The Last Kingdom is a great series. Give it some time, the First season is just an introduction, than it becomes better and better. Especially with season 2 they absolutely killed it. Season 3 was a Bit weird in the beginning but had some really emotional Moments as well and season 4 was also great Hopefully they don’t ruin it in the end as season 5 is the last of the Last Kingdom. By the way the actors are so talented, they are all doing a great Job.
I rather watch the last kingdom than to hear this again. To be realistic I always say nobody really knows what happened in that era, anyone could have written about it etc….but one thing I know the show is badass! So this is more than 1000 years ago! That’s like saying John Snow was real lol and he did all that…we don’t know what really happened we all come here because of shows!
Uhtred is a fictional character created by the author Bernard Cornwell. He is the protagonist of a series of historical fiction novels called “The Saxon Stories,” which are set in medieval England. The books follow the life of Uhtred, a warrior of Anglo-Saxon heritage, as he navigates the conflicts between the Saxons and the Danes in the 9th and 10th centuries. There have been adaptations of the books into television series, such as “The Last Kingdom,” which airs on Netflix.
If you look at the map on 255.720… the leftovers of the last ice age can still be seen as wetlands or ‘swamp’. This begs the question: what was the sea level during this time in history? During the Ice Age there was a land bridge between Europe and France. Did the wet lands dry up, or did the sea level change?
I watch it every week. It calms me. Even now that House of the Dragon is up. I still love love love Last Kingdom. OH and the great Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targareyen!!!! I could not belive it. Have you seen him with the white wig and the freakin’ saffire in the missing eye!!! He looks incredible. Totally the opposite of Baby Monk.
Okay I have a question when it comes to lineage. I have not confirmed every link as of yet but I just went down a rabbit hole that is a family tree. In it my great great great grandfather was married to a Dollar(d) family member. When following that line and branches of it through the Morrows and Churches plus the Neville and Antoing line and again through the Maldred line to Maldred Mac Crinan and Eldgyth of Northumbria, then it ultimately wound up here, Uhtred and many others which is crazy to say the least. How can I confirm the lineage and if the site I used is authentic? It’s more of a wow factor than anything that in some way possibly through marriages that my family line potentially has any connections to the families it does which according to the site leads back to the Kings of England all the way further even to German royalty.
I just wished the Last Kingdom (novel and TV series) depicted the real context in which the real Uhtred lived in around 1000 AD. Not 100 years earlier as in the novel or TV series. Having said that the novel or the series maintains a lot of the historical facts and figures that existed between 866-910.
this month of July before the end of this month I am very proud to myself I’ve finished perusal #thelastkingdom from Netflix without knowing what the story is about and who were the actors and actresses. Got interesting in the life of #UhtredofRagnarson then try comparing to#KingArthur nor Lionheart
Alfred- “Fear can be expelled with Knowledge” Uhtred- “The Future is Fate, It won’t Change.” Young Ragnar- “To be Viking is a way of life. To be Viking is a way to die. Lord you are never more alive than when you Sail a Ship onto a New Shore” Hild- “Shall I fetch another Buckst Lord?” Recommend more…?Can you…?
In the last Kingdom they call the Skandinavian Wikings “Danes” but the Angeln from the territory what is today Denmark was like the Saxons a German tribe. The Anglosaxons fight together against the Normans who came from Norway and Sweden. But by the way . The last Kindom is underrated and one of the best Series . Need 3 days for Season 4……
5 #August is the 1110th anniversary of Battle of Tettenhall(#Wodensfield)between Anglo-Saxons v #Danish #Vikings! A key date in history;A #TimeTraveler-#scifi series of #SpeedReading vids will do the actual battle ON that day;Heres a recap of SS-2,Episode60:youtube.com/watch?v=Urznu3xgbZ8
Did not know The Last Kingdom was that historically inaccurate! Although it is not 100% accurate, the storyline is amazing. What else can you expect from a historical action drama! It is an immaculately written show with amazing character building and the music is stellar. Even though it isn’t 100% accurate (it’s like 40% historically correct) it’s still one of the best shows ever produced imo. Comparable to game of thrones and The Lord of the Rings. Can’t wait for season 5!
I mean, it’s a great article, but that’s not the same Uhtred. Bebbanburg had many Uhtreds as its rulers. The storyline makes it clear from season 1 that Uhtred is not explicitly mentioned in any official records. I imagine that’s why Cornwell chose this character. It’s kind of the same as The Simpsons calling the city Springfield, which is a very common city name in the US, so you can never really pinpoint which one we’re talking about.
