Why Do Interracial Marriages Fail?

There is no evidence that biracial marriages are more likely to fail, but race is correlated with other factors that impact marriage. Fifty-four years after laws banning interracial marriage were declared unconstitutional, at least 19% of new marriages in the U.S. involve spouses from different ethnic or racial groups. However, new research from the University of Washington suggests that reported acceptance of interracial marriage masks deeper feelings of discomfort and disgust that some feel about mixed marriages.

Marital dissolution was found to be strongly associated with race/ethnicity, but the results failed to provide evidence that interracial marriage per se is associated with an elevated risk of marital dissolution. Some argue that the increasing prevalence of interracial marriage may be associated with the reduction of boundaries in a relationship.

American Indians have the highest interracial marriage rate among all single-race groups, with women slightly more likely to “marry out” than men in this group. Interracial marriages end in divorce more frequently than same-race couples, but there is wide variation depending on which races.

Partners in an interracial marriage must take on these issues together while maintaining empathy and respect for each other’s experiences. Interracial couples are more likely to be dehumanized than same-race couples, and previous studies show that couples who fail to invest each other’s romantic lives are much more likely to divorce than same-race couples.

Do interracial marriages last longer?

Stable marriage. A 2008 study by Jenifer Bratter and Rosalind King looked at whether crossing racial boundaries increased the risk of divorce. They found that interracial couples have higher rates of divorce, particularly for those that married during the late 1980s. A 2009 study by Yuanting Zhang and Jennifer Van Hook also found that interracial couples were at increased risk of divorce. Gender is significantly related to divorce risk. White women are more likely to divorce than Asian or Black women in interracial marriages. According to authors Stella Ting-Toomey and Tenzin Dorjee, this may be because their families and friends don’t support them. White women were seen as unqualified to raise mixed-race children by their non-White in-laws because they lacked experience navigating American culture as a minority. A 2018 study found that white women with mixed-race children were less likely to receive family support than non-white women with mixed-race children.

What are the disadvantages of intermarriage?

Intermarriage can lead to conflicts between spouses and extended family members, discrimination, and reduced marital quality, which can affect health. Interethnic marriages are less stable than intramarriages. Scholars have said this is because of differences in values, norms, and communication styles. Studies show that the risk of divorce in interethnic marriages increases with cultural differences between partners. Intermarriages that are unstable may make people feel worse, as shown by research that found that cultural conflict made both spouses in Turkish-British marriages feel more depressed (Baltas & Steptoe, 2000). One study found that intermarriage is linked to worse mental health than intramarriage. This means that German women and immigrant men who marry have worse mental health than native-born women and men of their gender (Eibich & Liu, 2021). These studies show that the link between intermarriage and mental health differs by gender and nationality. It may be that people with unhealthy behaviors are more likely to marry someone from a different ethnic group, which could affect their health. Potarca and Bernardi found that immigrant men married to German women were happier before they got married. However, a US study found that the health gap between whites in same-race and interracial marriages remains even after accounting for differences in health behaviors (Yu & Zhang, 2017).

2.2. Suicide Behaviors across Nations, Gender, and Immigration Backgrounds. Suicide rates vary across nations, genders, and immigration backgrounds. This is important to consider when looking at the links between marriage and suicide. Suicide rates vary a lot from country to country. In 2017, the highest suicide rates in the European Union were in the Baltic countries, Slovenia, and Hungary. They were also high in Sweden and other Nordic countries, and low in Southern European countries (Andrés, 2005; OECD & European Union, 2020). These patterns likely reflect differences in material resources and culture.

Why is it so hard to be in an interracial relationship?

Violence in interracial/multinational couples. All types of relationships can experience IPV. A study of Black-White interracial couples in the U.S. suggested there is no difference in IPV risk between interracial and same-race couples (Field et al., 2015). However, other studies with married and cohabiting couples suggested interracial couples in the U.S. may be at increased risk. Interracial couples are twice as likely to experience bidirectional violence than same-race White couples and 1.5 times more likely than same-race global majority couples. Mutual violence is similar in same-race Black couples. No one knows why interracial couples are more likely to be abused. But the stress of being different may explain why they are as likely to be abused as same-race Black couples and more likely than same-race White couples (Martin et al., 2013). Interracial couples face unique challenges in communication and conflict resolution, which can lead to relationship problems. These additional stressors may also increase the risk of violence in interracial relationships (Fusco, 2010; see also Bratter & Eschbach, 2006). We think that the stress of U.S. immigration can make it harder for interracial/multinational couples to communicate and may lead to more violence. We urge clinicians to assess interracial couples for IPV and conflict escalation. When assessing couples, we suggest looking at how they deal with conflict and when it gets out of control. We also suggest assessing for IPV in long-term couples who don’t live together, as well as married and cohabiting couples. Clinicians may also provide: 1) Teach couples how to calm down during conflict. 2) Look at how stress affects couples and their violence.

Access to therapists who are good with different races. Being multiculturally sensitive doesn’t mean you can work effectively with interracial couples. Some models, theories, and ways of being are ineffective and don’t work for interracial couples, even with a multicultural lens. The problem often comes from the hidden dynamics between couples and therapists, as well as legal and ethical concerns like high-conflict couples and IPV. This makes it harder for interracial couples to find a good therapist. Finding a good therapist can be hard because you have to see one in your state. If one partner is in another state or country, therapy is impossible because of the distance. This can make things worse because of race, culture, and immigration. Despite lobbying for license portability, interracial couples and MFTs are still in a bind, which makes them more oppressed.
