Why Do Spaniards Wear Wedding Ring On Right Hand?

In Spain, wedding rings are traditionally worn on the right hand due to dominant hand considerations. This is a cultural tradition that has roots in Roman culture and is considered a symbol of honor and trust. In contrast, Europeans wear wedding rings on the right hand due to deep cultural differences in symbolism and history.

When Spanish women get engaged, they wear their engagement ring on the left hand’s ring finger, while their wedding ring is worn on the right hand. This tradition is rooted in the belief that the finger has a direct vein leading to the heart, the “vena amoris,” leading to the heart. The priest blesses the rings and places them on the couple’s right hands, symbolizing the bond between the couple and their commitment to each other in the eyes of God.

In Western cultures, such as the United States and Europe, the wedding ring is typically worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, rooted in the belief that this finger has a direct vein leading to the heart. This symbolic act represents the bond between the couple and their commitment to each other in the eyes of God.

After divorce, the decision typically comes down to personal preference, with some people choosing to wear their wedding ring on the right hand as a reminder of their continued friendship with their ex. The right hand is also associated with the “Mazel Tov” blessing, which is a wish for good fortune and joy in the couple’s marriage.

In Spain, engagement rings are scarce, but the importance is placed on the wedding rings, with couples generally wearing them on the right hand.

  • it STILL is the best mans job to kidnap the bride where I live (aka Bavaria in the south of Germany): We have a tradition called Brautvaziagn: this means that the best man ‘steals’ the bride during the afternoon and ‘drags’ (obviously she comes with him willingly) her off to the nearest pub or bar. The band then notices that the groom has just married the bride hours ago and has already ‘lost’ her, so he (and all of the guests following him) tries to find her. Once he has found her, he has to pass a series of challenges and games to get her back. The whole thing is crazy fun for the wedding party because the music accompanies everything and there is a lot of drinking and dancing on the tables. Oh yes, and of course it’s super fun for everyone except the groom himself to see how he has to pass all the tests.
