Intercaste marriage (ICM) is a form of exogamous nuptial union that involves two individuals belonging to different castes. It is considered socially unacceptable and taboo in most parts of South Asia, with the offspring produced being of inferior quality. However, with higher education and modern outlook, many have become aware of the disadvantages of following the caste system. In India, intercaste marriage is no longer a taboo, and restrictions on consenting interfaith couples have been added.
Intercaste marriages are considered taboo in many places, with families attacking or even killing couples for falling in love or trying to marry against caste. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 does not prohibit intercaste marriages, but they are helping to abolish the caste system and should be encouraged. Offenders should be severely punished in case of violence or threat to life of such couples.
In Nepal, intercaste marriages are generally considered taboo, but they are gradually gaining acceptance due to increasing education, employment, middle-class economic background, and increased family support. However, it is believed that children of inter-caste outcomes are not perfect and elders fear the social reputation and social standing of the couple.
Castes maintain themselves through the principle of endogamy, where people belong to a group are restricted in terms of their choice of marriage. In 2018, the Supreme Court upheld that marriage between consenting adults will be legal, despite the challenges faced by intercaste marriages in India.
