In Papua New Guinea, bride price is considered a marriage contract, and after the man pays a bride price, she belongs to him. Bride price is also known as bride-wealth, which is a payment made by a groom or his kin to the kin of the bride in exchange for the right to marry her.

Bride price is an official custom that expresses the love a husband has for his wife and symbolizes a reward and honor for the parents of the wife. Without payment of the bride price, marriages are not recognized. The Tungo clan is excluded from this rule, as the bride-price among them is higher than among other clans.

What is the purpose of bride wealth?

Bridewealth marriage in Sub-Saharan Africa. In sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere, marriage is seen as the union of two families, not two individuals. In many traditional African societies, parents arranged their children’s marriages. In some cases, this happened when the children were young or even before they were born. Bridewealth is part of the traditional marriage process in most African societies. It is typically cash or goods (usually livestock) transferred from the husband to the wife’s family. This payment makes the husbands and wives’ families closer and helps them lend or give money and/or food to each other when they need it (Abdul-Korah, 2014; Dekker & Hoogeveen, 2002). Bridewealth payments make marriage a contract between two families, so they don’t focus on the couple. Bridewealth compensates the wife’s family for her lost labor and formalizes the transfer of sexual and reproductive rights to the husband’s family. Any children from the marriage become part of the husband’s lineage. Bridewealth shows that the husband controls his wife’s reproduction and that he depends on older men in the family to arrange the marriage and control their sons’ access to resources (Anderson, 2007). This practice is part of a community system because the bridewealth paid for a woman may be used to pay her brothers. Marriage is common across the subcontinent, but divorce is also common. About one-third of first marriages in sub-Saharan Africa end in divorce within 20 years (Clark & Brauner-Otto, 2015). Bridewealth is expected to be returned upon divorce, which may deter women from leaving unhappy or abusive marriages. Bridewealth can also limit a woman’s decision-making power and autonomy. It makes her husband think he owns her and reinforces traditional gender roles. This makes women subservient to men (Abdul-Korah, 2014; Dodoo & Frost, 2008; Dodoo, Horne, & Biney, 2014). Bridewealth changed a lot in the 20th and early 21st centuries in much of the subcontinent. In the past, bridewealth was paid in livestock or other valuable goods. Now, it is often paid in cash.
