Jesse Tyler Ferguson, a former Modern Family co-star, replaced Ty Burrell as officiant for Sarah Hylands’ wedding at the last minute after he was unable to attend. Burrell, who played Phil to Hylands character Haley Dunphy for 11 seasons on the ABC show, was supposed to officiate the ceremony but had to bow out due to a family emergency. Ferguson, who previously served as the officiant when his former co-star married radio personality Wells Adams, was also present at the wedding.
The Modern Family reunion, which included Sofía Vergara, Ed ONeill, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, and others, was one of the most talked-about events of the summer. Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams were able to tie the knot after multiple dates were pushed back due to various reasons.
Ferguson revealed that he received a phone call 12 days before the wedding, and that he had to take over as the celebrant. He asked Burrell for pointers on what he should say during the service. The couple met on a Zoom call in 2020 and got engaged in March 2023. They tied the knot earlier this month in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Ferguson revealed that he was not actually pegged to perform the ceremony, but he was replaced by Ferguson. He also shared an image from her stunning wedding to Wells Adams, which was officiated with sincerity, making the day even more magical.

Did everyone in Modern Family get along?
Its hard to believe that its been over three years since Modern Family ended, but the cast is still so close with each other that they really did become a family offscreen as well. Pretty often, cast members will share pics of them hanging out together. For example, most recently, Jesse Tyler Ferguson went to support Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (who played Lily on the show) at her school play.
Since its just so feel-good to see them all hanging out together IRL, here are 19 pics thatll almost make it feel like the show never ended:

Why wasn’t Ty Burrell in the Modern Family reunion?
The actor shared that multiple members of the cast were busy but they canceled their plans to appear together on the awards show, with Ferguson insisting that Ty Burrell show up after he missed their last gathering.
Last week, the 2024 SAG Awards reunited casts from beloved TV shows and movies including Modern Family, Breaking Bad and The Devil Wears Prada.
While the Modern Family reunion was missing the children from the hit ABC sitcom, the grown-up gathering did include Ty Burrell, who famously missed a previous time the cast gathered since the show wrapped.
Speaking on Friday’s Tonight Show, Jesse Tyler Ferguson said he insisted that Burrell show up after his absence at the last reunion sparked concerns from fans that something had happened to the actor who played Phil Dunphy.
Did the Modern Family cast like each other?
The Dunphy-Tucker-Pritchett clan is as tight as ever. Though the Emmy-winning sitcom Modern Family came to an end in 2020 after 11 years, the cast have remained close, and recently reunited at Americas Got Talent Judge Sofia Vergaras house. It looks like they had a fantastic time, and the pictures are too cute. Warning: seeing the kids all grown up may make you feel old.
TheModern Family cast reunites at Sofia Vergaras home. In addition to the cast, co-creators Steven Levitan and Chris Lloyd were in attendance, or as Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell, called them, the two dads. His pictures also revealed that Vergara keeps the snap of herself and Julie Bowen from Haleys (Sarah Hyland) photography show in a place of honor.
Scroll to the second slide on this post to see the Dunphy sisters drinking wine together. Its truly too cute.
Did Sofia Vergara go to Sarah Hyland’s wedding?
Sofia Vergara, a celebrity guest, attended the ceremony with her son. The actress looked great in a black-and-white dress, minimal jewelry, and big sunglasses. It was a sunny day in Santa Barbara, just in time for the wedding. Sofia shared photos with the rest of the cast, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita, and with Nolan Gould, Julie Bowen, and Ariel Winter. The Hollywood star documented the celebration on social media, having fun and sharing photos of the dinner and ceremony. “Hello Solvang!” Fun wedding weekend! Sofia posted on Instagram.
Did Matt LeBlanc turn down Modern Family?
LeBlanc turned down Modern Family as he felt he couldnt do the project justice, and he had a feeling that the part of Phil Dunphy was written for another actor. His suspicions were correct, as the creators of Modern Family wanted Ty Burrell for the role. However, the network wanted to find a more famous face for the part, even though LeBlanc was a bad fit. LeBlanc played Joeys sweet, innocent naivete to perfection, only to play subverted version of this persona in Episodes (where he was still dim, but more arrogant and self-centered). However, hes never shown the campy flair that Ty Burrell brought to Modern Family.
Much of Phils appeal in Modern Family comes down to the good-natured characters cringe-worthy attempts to relate to his teenage children. LeBlanc wouldnt have been right for Phils awkward, goofy “peerenting,” while another actor that the creators pursued was even less suited to the part. The creators of Modern Family also approached Rob Huebel (per Vulture), who is great at playing sleaze bags and comically dumb side characters but who doesnt generally take on wholesome roles. Fittingly, Huebel went on to guest star as Phils college nemesis in Modern Family season 2, episode 24, “The One That Got Away,” with his villainous turn proving Burrells casting was perfect.
Who was supposed to play Claire Dunphy?
- Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow were considered for the roles of Phil and Claire Dunphy in the Modern Family pilot episode but ultimately turned them down.
- Mitchell and Cams adoption of Lily in Vietnam depicted in the pilot episode was not legally possible at the time, as same-gender couples and single parents couldnt legally adopt in Vietnam.
- The leading actors of Modern Family made an agreement to submit themselves as supporting actors for awards consideration, highlighting the ensemble nature of the show.
Watching the Dunphys, Pritchett-Delgados, and Tucker-Pritchetts grow over 11 years made for transformative television, but there is quite a bit fans might not know about the Modern Family pilot episode. Before Modern Family premiered in 2009, there wasnt any show like it on TV. Watching three very different households grow and fight with each other on-screen normalized many families at home.
The award-winning TV series released its first episode in September 2009 with rave reviews and introduced the Dunphy, Delgado-Pritchett, and Tucker-Pritchetts. Fans learned that Jay Pritchett is the patriarch of the family and the father of Claire and Mitchell. The two then went on to have their own families, creating their own little modern family. The pilot does a quick introduction of each familys dynamic, introducing everyone to a new baby, growing teenagers, and a new marriage. But with it being over a decade since the first episode aired, there are several things that fans dont know about the Modern Family pilot.
What is the saddest episode of Modern Family?
Legacy is one of the most upsetting Modern Family episodes and sees Phil visiting his dad Frank Dunphy in Florida. Phil thinks that Frank could have dementia and after they spend time together, Frank passes away.
Anyone who has lost a parent or older relative can relate to this difficult but realistic episode. Phil is glad that he was able to be with his dad in his final moments and appreciates the years that they have spent together. Its tough watching Phil face a world without his beloved parent.
While not as devastating as some of the saddest TV series finales, the final two episodes of Modern Family are still tear-jerkers. The characters are all going in different directions, with some moving away and others facing the future as empty nesters.
