Cockatiels, a small species of pet parrots, recognize their owners and can form strong relationships with them. They are highly social and clever, and require at least one hour of daily interaction with their owners. Grooming is essential for cockatiel health, as they are affectionate and thrive on social interaction.
Cockatiels may groom themselves in the wilderness, but in captivity, they often grind their beaks together, symbolizing relaxation and contentment. Without regular grooming, cockatiels will become dirty and their overall body condition will deteriorate. Cockatiel parents should be on the lookout for reproductive issues in their birds, as they are the most prolific egg layers we see.
Cockatiels are known for their charming personalities and ability to form strong bonds with their human owners. The bond between a cockatiel and its owner can be rewarding and fulfilling for both parties. To determine if a feathered friend has bonded with you, consider the following:
1. Feather care: Preening & Molting, Regular Baths, Misting, Avoid Over-Bathing, Wing Clipping, Flight. Consult a veterinarian if you have a cockatiel.
2. Banding: Stores may band cockatiels at an early age or choose to band them after a year when they reach maturity. At this stage, you can distinguish between male and female cockatiels through their feather patterns and behavior.
3. Feeding: Cockatiel bonding is another important behavior, with males bringing food to their mates and sharing it with them. However, dogs trust their owners to meet their basic needs for food, shelter, and love, and in return, they offer loyalty and devotion.
📹 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Male Cockatiels
Male cockatiels are different from Females in many ways. today we’re going to dive into the fascinating world of male cockatiels.
Do cockatiels like being picked up?
One thing to consider is you do not know how he has been treated before you got him. Something may have caused him not to trust hands. He may have been picked on by a child or poked at by people. Maybe someone tried to force him to be tame. Cockatiels are prey animals so they are very sensitive to being grabbed. This is what a predator would do so they react in fear. Continue being kind to him, sit and talk to him with your hands rested in your lap. Offer him treats but if he doesnt want to come over, place the treat in his dish and reassure him. It may take a long time for him to trust hands, and possibly he will never trust hands. Some birds seem to be naturally hand shy as part of their individual personality. Each bird is different and some are more outgoing and love being handled while others are content just having people around for company. Ill give you the links to our behavior and training pages to help you understand him better.
What does it mean when a bird grooms you?
3. Preening you. This is somewhat similar to cuddling. If your parrot trusts you, apart from preening itself, it will also engage in preening you. It may gently nuzzle against your hand, the hem of your clothes, and sometimes your ears, running its beak along your skin or hair. It means the bird wants to groom you and considers you close to itself.
In the wild, birds that get along well with each other engage in what is known as allopreening, which refers to the act of preening another birds feathers. If your parrot preens you, it is a clear sign that it trusts you and wants to keep your “feathers” in top condition too!
Below is a video of Bibi preening my ear. He sometimes gets so enthusiastic about it that it hurts a little bit!
Do cockatiels have a favourite person?
Renowned for their inquisitive and occasionally spirited nature, cockatiels are social birds that flourish with owner interaction. Particularly skilled at whistling, male cockatiels often engage in whistle serenades directed at their favored person, object, or mirror reflection. Natural ground foragers, happily forage at the bottom of their cage and enjoy snuggling on their favored persons shoulder during downtime.
Understanding Cockatiel Gestures and Signs of Aggression.
Communication among cockatiels involves a range of gestures. Content birds may emit soft whistles or chirps, accompanied by head bobs or fluffed feathers. Signs of aggression encompass dilated pupils, raised neck feathers, growling, and specific postures. Sudden eye dilation may signal anger, while aggressive postures involve head-down positions, ruffled feathers, fanned tail feathers, and wing gestures. Recognizing these signs is crucial, prompting the need to give the bird some space and understand its moods.
Do cockatiels recognise their owners?
Without a doubt, cockatiels, which are one of the smaller species of pet parrots, are the first bird I recommend for new pet owners or families, especially those with elementary school-age children or older. They are large enough to be sturdy in the hands of a child (although always under adult supervision, please!) but not so large that they are daunting. They are extremely social and love spending time with their human flock mates. They clearly recognize their caretakers and are responsive to their voices. They are fairly easy to care for, so they can be perfect first birds for people or families learning about the responsibilities of having a pet and/or the unique care needs of birds.
2.Cockatiels are extremely smart and can be taught to talk and do tricks.
Search YouTube, and youll find hundreds of videos showing cockatiels dancing, singing and hamming it up. People love to see birds do silly things, and cockatiels love to perform for rewards. Simply offer them a treat right after they complete a behavior, and the performance of the behavior will be reinforced. Reward this behavior repeatedly over time, and the bird will eventually perform it in anticipation of the treat.
What does it mean when your cockatiel grooms you?
Your Bird Grooms Themselves In Your Presence. As your bond grows, your bird may even begin to groom you, an act generally reserved for a mate. This is their personal way to improve their bond with you and is a sign of true affection.
Your Bird Vocally Communicates With You. Your pet birds vocalizations will generally be one of the first things you notice. After all, how could you ignore the screeches and yells of a particularly excited parrot?!
Pleasant sounds like chirping, singing, and talking with you generally indicate a sense of trust and affection. You may even find your bird mimicking you because they want to fit in and be considered part of your community. This is a natural behavior with birds in larger groups; in the home setting, its an indicator that your bird desires to be accepted as a member of your family.
Why does my bird keep grooming me?
- If Ann had dry skin, perhaps the humidity levels in the house were low causing the birds skin to be dry as well. Dry skin is itchy and brings attention to where the feathers meet the skin – it is easy to see where an itchy bird might find relief in over preening – or worse.
- Birds are very clean animals. They spend a great deal of time every day removing dirt, dust and debris from their feathers in the act of preening. It is in their nature to remove anything foreign from the body – theirs or ours – I have had a scab or two ripped off in my lifetime by my well-intentioned parrots. Imagine how foreign hand lotion residue would feel on the feathers of a bird that was handled by their owner after having applied it. A bird could spend all day unsuccessfully trying to remove it – in the process, damaging their feathers.
It turns out that Ann has a health issue that causes her skin to be unusually dry and that low humidity was not a factor in her birds feather destruction. She was, however, using a heavy, waxy moisturizer for her condition and was unaware that she was coating her bird with it every time she handled it.
The solution was to avoid handling the bird within an hour of applying the lotion, as much as possible, and daily bathing for the bird. The over preening stopped as soon as the bird was convinced the feathers were clean. Sometimes its just THAT simple!

5 Mistakes Every Beginner Does to Cockatiel Are you interested in adopting a cockatiel? Or did you just get your first cockatiel bird …
I just lost my cockatiel who was with me for 20 years… Its heartbreakin, we became friends and we hugged each other almost daily. For new owners make sure you spend time with your bird if, especially so if you only have one cockatiel, they will see you as their partner and get worried if youre not home too often. They will make you smile and they will do stuff but you will love them no matter what. Best of companions, and a lifetime experience for me what Doris was for me
I can’t thank you enough for educating people about how to own a cockatiel pet correctly. These little creatures are awesome, so smart and lovable. Something else that is terrible is when owners start doing things to the cockatiel to elicit certain behaviors that they deem funny. Hence, some cockatiels become aggressive and hiss to people. Their livers suffer with this and their lifespan is shortened. Thank you!!! ❤
I have recently bought my new little fella, Titus and i took my time to get to know him. It took a few weeks of just sitting on my couch and he observed me lol. Being older had its benefits..every kid wants to touch but as an adult I chose not to. I was careful abt letting him have cage free time and used a wooden spoon with a rounded handle to teach him to perch, not my fingers. Well what a thrill. He trusts me now. He now hops from the spoon to my flat hand, climbs up onto my shoulder. I sing to him, feed him grated carrot, broccolini, and grated apple along with his seed. I can’t whistle so i play him whistling tunes from Spotify. Thank you for your vid. I am keen to find out as much as I can to give my gorgeous pet the best care I can give ❤
I plan to soon get a cockatiel because when i was a kid we used to have a pet bird but it died when i was a teenager and the ambiance of the household has never been the same since. Hopefully the tips shown are true and i thank you for making this article as i learned a bunch of new things about these birds!
This Story is absolutely True! I have had about 20 or more Cockatiels in my life. mostly people keep them in a too small cage. no toys and no friends is very sad. that is why i took in another baby who has been all alone long days, because the owner needs to work. now she is having a new much better life.🦜
New cockatiel owner, Story is, My brother didn’t want to have the bird anymore, And It was either I take him or My grandma takes him, But she has a bunch of dogs, And I didn’t want anything bad to happen To him, So I’ve been taking care of him, a little of a rocky start, Were both getting use to each other, And I’m enjoying owning this bird, His name is Sunshine, So this article IS a great reminder for me to be the best owner I can possibly be for him
My first cockatiels were hand raised…they came out of their cage when we were in the room….but the cage door was never left open. I used to breed budgies so I’m certainly NOT a newby…might I remind you that this parrot along with the budgie, cockatoo, galah & corella are native to my country of Australia…we know about them here
Part of the reason I just let a ten year relationship was over my ex, cause she did not want a mate for my cockatiel Breeze and just saw pets as a chore or keep them in cages all the time. When she would sit on checkers and think they were eggs lol. This woman closed the door and almost scalped her crest off her head! She even got high and open the cage and let her fly into a ceiling fan. I know she has depression and issues, but she literally almost killed my bird so many times when I was at work, I’d be so nervous. She is so sweet and loves scratches, I got her 8 years ago when her daughter wanted to just leave her in a room who is autistic and didn’t know how to properly care for pets. Anyway, I had to get outta there with my bird. Now she has bad allergies and eyes are watery in this new apartment. She has conjunctivitis and I’m saving money for the avian vet to see her. Pray for my baby, Breeze! She got me through so much trauma like my sister overdosing. Breeze would fly and land on the couch after my surgery to give me love and encouragement… RIP Christina…
need help with my cockatiel I’ve done research on Budgies for years and I’m learning on Cockatiels now. I’m waiting for everything to be set and ready before I get the bird. Like the cage, once it’s fully setup with the right things, once I bird proof my room, once Ive learned everything I need such as food, taming, sickness, moods, and so on. But I’m confused about something. So Budgies (from my knowledge) need about a week or two alone in the cage to understand the surroundings and you. You could rub your finger on the cage and such so they can get used to you. But is that the same with cockatiels? If so, how long do I need to wait until they’re okay with their surroundings? What do I do when I first get it? And how soon should I let it out the cage so it can fly freely in my room?
I’d like to encourage new cockatiel pet owners to go slowly, gently, quietly to win their trust. It does take time. Please, please don’t be quick to touch and pat them first up. You are frightening your bird! You’ll lose a finger. Noone wants that! Use a wooden spoon handle or a stick to get your bird to get used to stepping up and eventually he will warm to you and hop up on your hand, shoulder, back. Let them come to you, let them have the choice. You’ll have a happy birdy! ❤❤❤
I’ve had my cocktail for a year and a half. She has always been terrified by hands… I can go to her and rub my face all over her and she grooms my eyelashes. I try to run her neck with my nose. But as soon as my hand comes close she leaves. I can feel her by hand but she is timid at first. I also hang out with her all day and she loves playing around the room. Any tips on how I can get her to trust my hands, so I can pet her or at least get her to stand on my fingers?
One quesion:I have a cockatiel and it doesnt like to be touched. I tried bonding with it for several times but it keeps rejecting me…what should i do? I want to let it out of cage nut cant bc im scared she will fly away and never come back to cage…(if you want to respond pls like my comment cause i cant see if someone responded or not)
Hello, I have a male cockatiel and he is addicted to the mirror. I have a female one, but he beahaves angrily with the female cockatiel and dosent show affection to her. I want to separate the male co from the mirror, but Im afraid that he will hurt himself or become depressed. What can I do for him? Please help me I love my bird
Mine are not alone at all. Whenever we leave the house, it’s only the cat who remains home with them. She is really gentle and loving. Anyway we never leave our cockatiels outside of their cage without our supervision. Of course, cat issues… We first had two, a male and a female, and now we have 4. Another girl and boy. They are cubs, not bought from the Pet Shop because our two little angels made babies. We had to have the 3 baby cockatiel long after the birth or our two little ones, but it sadly passed away shortly after hatching. I was so sad… but now they made other 4 eggs and we are waiting to see if we are gonna get other babies. I pray that the babies will be healthy and able to live. ❤🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣
