Will God Bless A Second Marriage After Divorce?

The question of whether a person should stay in a second marriage after being divorced and remarried is often asked by Christians. However, the answer is yes. God views every marriage covenant as legitimate even when the marriage begins through an act of adultery. While Catholicism has taught that if a person’s first marriage ended in divorce, God won’t bless a second one, many Protestant traditions hold that since there are biblically valid exceptions, God permits divorce under certain circumstances.

The Bible clearly states that remarriage after divorce constitutes adultery if the first marriage took place. However, there are exceptions to when He allows for second marriage and divorce, such as in cases of sexual immorality. It is essential to trust in God’s recognition of second marriages, as He is a benevolent God associated with love, especially parental love, for His creations.

God is a merciful and loving God who understands the brokenness of our world and can bring healing and redemption to those who have experienced the pain of divorce. There are specific prayers that are meant to foster post-divorce healing, including healing from the wounds of the past, seeking support from a trusted Christian counselor, and acknowledging and processing the hurt.

Remarrying after divorce is considered adultery, and anyone who divorces their wife and marries another commits adultery. However, God forgives divorce and remarriage like any other sin, and if divorce is the only option available, He is willing to forgive and allow those affected to start anew.

In conclusion, while God hates divorce, He does not have an exception for subsequent marriages. Remaining in a second marriage is acceptable and not a sin if the marriage ended because of adultery.

Who is most likely to remarry after divorce?

Gender and Remarriage. Among people who can remarry—those who had a marriage end in divorce or the death of a spouse—men are more likely to tie the knot again than women. The gap has narrowed some over the years, but statistically, men remain much more prone to multiple marriages.

In 1960, 70% of eligible men remarried as opposed to 48% of women. By 1980, those numbers were 66% and 46% respectively. While in 2013, they were 64% and 52%, creeping substantially closer.

Again, over time these numbers have changed dramatically. Women from 25-54 are now roughly as likely as men to be remarried. Women above 55 years old, however, remain significantly less likely to marry again than their male counterparts.

What does God say about remarriage after divorce?

“And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”9 Here, the phrase “and marries another” raises the issue of remarriage. Jesus states that divorcing a mate on the grounds of immorality frees the offended mate to remarry without committing adultery.

God created marriage as an integral part of His plan to prosper His world and bless mankind. His desire was; to visualize the relationship between Christ and His bride, the Church1; to meet men’s and women’s need for intimacy2, and finally to populate the earth with people who reflect His image3. Because marriage is critical to God’s mission of redeeming the world, satan has made its destruction a priority. His strategy is to undermine the importance of marriage, minimize the effect divorce will have on the family and seduce people to embrace an alternate lifestyle.

Because God loves us, He has provided clear instructions on how married couples can experience oneness and fulfill His vision for their union4. By means of His empowering Spirit and gospel of grace, He has provided not only the means needed to love and serve each other but also the forgiveness and healing needed when their marriages fall short or fall apart. And through His Church, He has provided a community that can give counsel and support in restoring them.

Application Points. Biblical Grounds for Divorce. God’s desire and design are for marriage to flourish for a lifetime. But in a fallen world, there will be cases when a person will break their vows and desert their mate. The Lord addresses these circumstances in His Word, providing two clear exceptions to His command to believers, not to divorce5.

Where in the Bible does it say you Cannot remarry after divorce?

Luke 16:18. “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.”

Paul on divorce and remarriage:. Romans 7:1-3. “Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.”

1 Corinthians 7:10-11. “Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.”

Is it biblical for a divorced woman to remarry?

We know from Mark 10:11-12 as well as Matthew 5:22-33, Matthew 19:4-6,9, Luke 16:18, and Romans 7:23 that remarriage after divorce constitutes adultery if the first marriage was valid. However, if your marriage to your ex-husband or wife was annulled, then your second marriage is permissible.

Is it a sin to marry a divorced man?

In Matthew 5:32, Jesus answered this question directly – anyone who marries a divorced person also commits adultery. Unless your partner dies, the Bible is against remarriage.

1 Corinthians 7:39 – A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.

If I was single, Id definitely trust God to get married. If I were a divorced man, Id trust God to give me grace for singlehood. But if Im unable to be faithful in singleness, Id rather re-marry than burn with passion. Id rather remarry and commit to one person than engage in casual sex or masturbate or use sex toys (THIS IS ME SPEAKING, NOT THE LORD).Your final authority is what Jesus commanded.

Which person is most likely to remarry after a divorce?

Factors Affecting Remarriage. The chances of remarrying depend on a number of things. First, it depends on the availability of partners. As time goes by, there are more available women than men in the marriage pool as noted above. Consequently, men are more likely than women to remarry. This lack of available partners is experienced by all women, but especially by African-American women where the ratio of women to men is quite high. Women are more likely to have children living with them, and this diminishes the chance of remarriage as well. And marriage is more attractive for males than females (Seccombe& Warner, 2004). Men tend to remarry sooner (3 years after divorce on average vs. 5 years on average for women).

Many women do not remarry because they do not want to remarry. Traditionally, marriage has provided more benefits to men than to women. Women typically have to make more adjustments in work (accommodating work life to meet family demands or the approval of the husband) and at home (taking more responsibility for household duties).Education increases mens likelihood of remarrying but may reduce the likelihood for women. Part of this is due to the expectation (almost an unspoken rule) referred to as the “marriage gradient.” This rule suggests among couples, the man is supposed to have more education than the woman. Today, there are more women with higher levels of education than before and women with higher levels are less likely to find partners matching this expectation. Being happily single requires being economically self-sufficient and being psychologically independent. Women in this situation may find remarriage much less attractive.

One key factor in understanding some of these issues is the level of continuing parental investment in adult children, and possibly their children. The number of grandparents raising children in the USA is reckoned to be in the vicinity of 2.7 million. In addition, there is the continued support of adult children themselves which can be substantial. The Pew Research document “Helping Adult Children” gives some indication of the nature and extent of this support, which tends to be even greater in Europe than the USA, with 60% of Italian parents reporting an adult child residing with them most of the year.

Blended Families. Most academic research on reconstituted or blended families focuses on younger adults and the kind of difficulties which ensue when trying to blend children raised by a different spouse/partner and one or more adults with perhaps different views or experience on how this might be accomplished. All sorts of issues can arise: conflicted loyalties, different attitudes to discipline, role-ambiguity, and the simple fact of a far-reaching change easily perceived as a disruption on the part of a child. Given the rise of the gray divorce, it is increasingly the case that this age group will encounter later age, or adult children (sometimes called the “boomerang generation”), in the house of their new partners. Such encounters are even more likely given the rise of the so-called “silver surfer” utilizing online dating sites, and the fact that an increasing number of adult children continue to live at home given the increased cost of housing.

Is it okay to remarry after divorce?

When can I remarry after divorce?. Depending on your situation, you may feel ready to move on immediately after your divorce is finalized. In most states, you have the right to enter a new marriage the same day your divorce is finalized.

However, eight states and Washington, D.C. have a mandatory waiting period that prevents you from entering into a second marriage immediately after your first one ends.

  • States with a mandatory waiting period between divorce and remarriage. Alabama: There is a 60-day waiting period, although a marriage before that time frame in another state would be recognized by Alabama.
  • Kansas: There is a 30-day waiting period as of June 30, 1983, although the waiting period may be waived if both spouses agree to it.
  • Massachusetts: There is a 90-day period after a divorce decree is granted where marriage is not permitted. A Massachusetts divorce decree is considered a decree nisi (a court order that does not go immediately into effect) in that state.
  • Nebraska: There is a six-month waiting period unless the divorced parties are remarrying each other.
  • Oklahoma: Although a six-month waiting period is stated, a remarriage within the state before that would be valid unless it was “set aside.”
  • Rhode Island: A divorce decree in Rhode Island becomes valid after a three-month waiting period, at which time the ex-spouses are free to remarry
  • Texas: There is a 30-day waiting period as of January 1, 1974.
  • Washington, D.C.: There is a 30-day post-divorce period during which the divorce decree may be appealed. Remarriage is permissible after that period but not before.
  • Wisconsin: A six-month waiting period is established by each divorce decree.

  • Only death severs a marriage bond. Therefore, even if you get a divorce, in God’s eye you are still married. Paul said, not I but the lord commands you to remain single or reconcile. Finally, Jesus said, “anyone who marries a divorced man or woman commits adultery. Adulterers do not enter the kingdom of heaven.
