A Rather English Marriage is a 1998 British television drama film that tells the story of two recently widowed men, a World War Two squadron leader (Albert Finney) and a retired milkman (Tom Courtenay). When their respective wives die at the same time, a social worker suggests they live together in Reggie’s spacious house. While Reggie is ex-RAF, Roy was a milkman, and Reggie tends to treat the other man like his servant. However, a real bond is forged between them, and they become a companionable if odd couple.
The film was directed by Noah Baumbach and produced by David Heyman. The story follows the couple as they move in together after their wives die on the same night. The film is based on the novel by Angela Lambert and won the BAFTA Award for Best Television Drama. The story is beautifully shot and is a lovely-looking drama in general.
A Rather English Marriage is a bittersweet tale of friendship, class struggle, and old age, with a beautiful score and a hauntingly haunting storyline. The film is a must-see for any married couple, as it explores themes of friendship, class struggle, and old age.
