How long were Landon and Jamie married before she died?
In the last two paragraphs of the chapter, Landon thinks about the 40 years since his wedding. He’s worn his ring for 40 years and still loves Jamie. Landon believes in miracles. The novel ends without revealing which miracle Landon refers to. Did Jamie live for 40 years with Landon? Or was the miracle that he changed so much after that year? Did he become a minister, as Jamie had advised? Was that the miracle he was talking about? Did he give away his grandfather’s money? Sparks doesn’t answer these questions, so readers must decide for themselves. In the second-to-last paragraph, Landon says he never took off his wedding ring. He’s never wanted to. Did Landon never remarry? Was this proof of his love for Jamie? It can be read in two ways, both of which tie into the ending. Jamie survived and they stayed married, or he never removed his ring as a testament to his love for Jamie. We don’t know if Jamie lived or died.
What does a white dress symbolize?
In many societies, white symbolizes purity and virtue. This is one reason why some brides wear white, especially in the West. People often say brides wear white because it’s tradition. But white wasn’t the only color for wedding dresses. Other colors were chosen more often than white. In Western societies, wedding dresses were of all colors for many centuries. This was for practical reasons. Brides bought dresses they could wear again or wore their best dress. White is not practical because it’s hard to clean and not ideal for repeat wear. Many brides wore dresses of other colors for their wedding and beyond. Why do so many brides wear white today? This trend started with Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding to Prince Albert.
Like today, royal weddings in the past got a lot of coverage and set trends. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s wedding was no exception. When Victoria wore a white gown, it was reported in newspapers and magazines. This influenced wedding trends. At first, only rich brides wore white wedding dresses. But the trend spread to all economic levels. By the 20th century, it was a tradition.

That’s it. Landon respects her commitment. Their friendship and courtship are innocent. Jamie’s father is harder to accept. He can be harsh. He won’t let Landon take her out on a date (she’s 18) and accuses Jamie of sinning when he catches them kissing. But he changes over time (early concerns that Reverend Sullivan will be seen as a bad parent find a way to be used in the story) and his bad personality is used to help show two important Bible ideas: faith and forgiveness. “Please do for me what you preach in church,” Landon asks him. “Have faith in me.” Jamie says he should forgive Landon for his past because he’s changed. Landon never becomes a Christian on screen. His transformation is very real. Christ can change a man’s life. Landon shows this kind of change. Love for another person doesn’t last. Christ’s love lasts forever. It’s clear that Landon isn’t just responding to Jamie’s pheromones.

What does the white wedding dress symbolize?
White bridal gowns are a relatively new fashion. With ready-to-wear clothing, brides could order affordable, mass-produced gowns based on sample sizes that were then fitted for them. A white wedding gown became a symbol of the American dream. From WWII to the end of the 20th century, the white gown symbolized prosperity, virginity, and a lifetime commitment. Today, those meanings are gone. Most American brides choose white, with four out of five choosing a white gown. It’s now an iconic symbol of weddings and expected at celebrations. Despite knowing it’s a relatively new tradition, I chose it too.
