I don’t think it’s that impractical for men to get an engagement ring. I think it’s ironic how we don’t want to be sexist yet for how many decades has it been all about the woman getting the ring? Even my mother who is in her 60s has felt it has always been a one sided deal that caters to the female only.
Fun fact about other countries: In Germany for instance the traditional way is for men AND women to have engagement rings, though generally without the diamond. It has increasingly become more US-style there over the years though, probably thru the influence of movies. I told him to sell the ring for 40,000, give me 15,000 and keep the 25,000. I never got the call back. The morale of the story is, diamond is a one way consumer product that is worthless.
This is already common in Europe (at least Sweden). Not a diamond ring, but a solid engagement band. As an American living in Europe, it made me look at the whole engagement ring tradition from a whole new lens. Why should only the woman be “marked” as taken, but not the man? Men having an engagement ring too makes sense these days, does it not? It’s a mutual union.
If the target audience is LGBT people who both can afford a useless diamond ring, and are actually allowed to be married (by their state, or their family) AND don’t also reject traditional marriage customs because of how harshly people use them to be mean to us… Then I don’t think they’re gunna sell a lot of these!
