Infidelity can be difficult to forgive when a partner does not express appropriate regret or remorse. Forgiveness often benefits the forgiver more than the unfaithful party. If you were unfaithful, admit guilt and seek forgiveness. If your partner was unfaithful, offer forgiveness when you are able. Together, seek understanding. If you are cheating, forgive your partner in due time and have an even better relationship.
Forgiving after infidelity doesn’t excuse the action but can be a step towards healing and understanding. It’s about finding peace and deciding whether to continue the marriage. Marriage can survive infidelity, but it is important to remember that it hurts and takes time to heal. Forgiveness can strengthen our love, benefit both parties, and lead to emotional turmoil and loss of self-esteem.
To forgive a cheating spouse, it is important to sit with your feelings without judging them and accept what we’ve been through. Acknowledge their feelings and work toward rebuilding the trust that you have betrayed. Don’t expect your partner to trust you again right away, but with time, you can try to regain their trust.
Forgiveness in marriage, even without infidelity, requires compassion and don’t hang on to entitlements. Genuine forgiveness for something as devastating as infidelity is not instant, and it is essential for both partners to heal and work together. Rebuilding trust requires consistent effort, transparency, and the betrayed can choose forgiveness regardless of whether the unfaithful spouse is remorseful or whether they stay married.

Have an affair. About 2,000 people took part in our study. They told us about their relationships with their spouses, why they had affairs, and how they felt about them. Past studies found that people in bad marriages were more likely to have affairs. But we didn’t find that in our samples. Our participants rated their relationships as decent. Our participants said they loved their partners and about a quarter of them said they went to couples counseling to improve their relationships. One thing was missing: sex. Half of our participants said they weren’t having sex with their partners. Many of them were unhappy with their sex lives. But those who had affairs did not have worse relationships or worse mental health. This result is different from what we found in our study. The people who had affairs said they enjoyed them and felt little regret. This was surprising because most people think infidelity is wrong and a sign of a bad marriage. How is this possible?
