Can You Wear Red To A Formal Wedding?

Red can be a stylish and appropriate color for a wedding, but it may be best to avoid wearing it in certain situations. For a more formal, traditional affair, it is best to stick to the dress code dictated by the couple. Red symbolizes love and passion, making it suitable for a variety of events. However, it could be frowned upon if the bride and groom have specifically mentioned that guests shouldn’t wear red or they want their guests to stick to a color scheme.

In Vietnamese weddings, the traditional áo dài dress is the perfect attire for any special occasion. Men can wear a tuxedo, but dark suits and tie are also appropriate. Dress shoes fit the bill when it comes to footwear, such as patent leather loafers for a tux or laced oxfords for a suit.

For a semi-formal summer wedding, a midi or floor-length dress with a dramatic silhouette, lace detailing, or another playful element is recommended. Bold colors and pretty floral prints are also welcome ideas. Hindu brides wear a red saree to signify prosperity and fertility, while Chinese brides wear red because it represents luck and happiness.

Red can be worn to a wedding for several reasons, including cultural significance, comfort, and style. In some cultures, red is typically worn with a dark tuxedo, white dress shirt, matching bow tie, cummerbund, and suspenders. Oxfords and other dress shoes work well.

In terms of short dresses, it is important to ensure that the dress is appropriately embellished and fits the overall theme and formality of the event. Black tie attire is typically black or a range of darker, more subdued colors like navy, emerald, and burgundy.

In conclusion, while red can be a stylish and appropriate color for a wedding, it is not a strict rule and should be worn according to the couple’s preferences.

  • Excellent article. Love the looks! Very stylish. The first look could pass at a formal evening event with a few small changes, while the other two looks, while I love them, and are totally cool, would be fine for everyday wear, but not proper for a black tie event. A couple suggestions. Never wear a clip on bow tie, even under a turndown collar. It’s OK if you’re going to a junior prom or something, but a man should always showcase elegance and wear a self tie. It’s not at all difficult to learn. At a formal event never wear a black/white bow tie combo. Wear a black tie to a black tie event. Do wear braces which attach to the inside of your trousers rather than clip-on suspenders for a cleaner, more refined look. Do wear a waist coat or cumberbund when wearing a single breasted jacket. Do wear peaked or shawl lapels, never notched to a black tie event. Do wear classical cuff links and studs, not ones which look like ‘Transformer’ characters (no novelty cuff links at a black tie event). IF an invite calls for black tie, don’t ever, ever…ever wear a black shirt and black long tie combo. It’s just plain bad. You sometimes see Hollywood actors doing this at black or white tie events, and it looks ridiculously tacky. It’s totally cool for hanging out for a night on the town, but seriously inappropriate for a black tie formal/semi-formal event. Socks: do wear only black silk over-the-calf socks. For one’s black patent pumps shoes, use satin or grosgrain shoelaces. Lastly, if you’re wearing a tux then accessories are key.

  • Hey Robin! Great article! I just love wearing suits. Can’t wait till I finish my studies and get into a position where I can wear them daily. The second outfit is my favourite, blue suit with brown shoes is just a perfect combinition. I think your shirt in the first one looked a little to loose, however I might be mistaken. All the best from Germany!

  • I dont have it in a 3 piece, but I really enjoy the blue suit red tie! Blue suits are a power statement and the red tie as well, many presidential candidates/presidents wear it as such..however, on top of it all, I feel like I would rather rock the black shirt and tie under that grey-ish suit! It looked Really well done!

  • Hi robin, always love the articles, and now I have some inspiration to do some shopping for some clothes, and I’m not going to lie, I’m usually don’t like black on black, however, I think my favorite look is the last one, also had a question robin, I know it’s typically cloudy and or rainy in England, but I was wondering if you’d ever do a spring / summer clothing haul, maybe some dressy shorts and some short sleeves and some boat shoes and or slip ons, anyways, thanks robin, and take care

  • @2:00 to @2:05 . That’s my most important concern. Brother, I’m from India, Hyderabad. I always face that type of problem. Sometimes I have to attend some formal events, sometimes in 5 star Hotels with International standards. But, the staff and even waiters of some 5 star hotels either wear a formal suit or some style of formal dress. In such situations, the guys who dressed up in some stupid manner will be seen as genius rather than those who prefers formal dress like me. And sometimes, I even felt I became a point of joke in such situation . That really annoys me. And, one time I had to visit a party in the Residence of High Commissioner of British Embassy for Hyderabad. There, Except for me and other 7 or 9 people, most of them are from UK. It is there that I’ve clearly understood I need to develop to a higher level and sense of formal dressing. I may be lacking in formal dressing sense. But, even When I follow or imitate something from online and dress up in a formal way, the situation you’ve mentioned in the article between @2:00 and @2:05, really starts to scare me. I was even mistaken for a waiter twice. Could you please send me yours or other photos in suits and formal dress. And most importantly, some advice is highy appreciable.
