Honestly rewatching this. Weasley disarms Inigo 3 times during this duel. He had him at the first disarm if he was going for the kill. Each time he honestly had him at the disarm. The first where he let him go fetch the blade, the second where he let him catch the sword when it fell, and the final when he knocked him out. Inigo is a wonderful duelist, Weasley was just so far beyond him.
All of the sword fighting was real. No stunt doubles were used for the sword fighting (the acrobatics, yes, they had gymnasts for that). But all the sword fighting was actually Cary and Mandy. They both had to train extensively to master the sword. There were no professional fencers hired to do this scene.
Between 2:40 and 2:45 there is a gem – Westley switches from using right hand to using left and then goes back to using right again – all in such fluid motion that hardly anyone seem to have noticed. Of course this is a fairytale fight with amazing stunts and funny poses as at 2:25, but I cannot help but admire the training the actors must have gone through to be able to film it.
This may be the best scene in film, period. It just makes me smile so damn wide every time I see it. The humor, music, action, and especially the chemistry between Wesley and Inigo- it all just combines to form this perfect cocktail of a scene. It helps that this was one of the first movies I ever saw as a child, right smack dab in the middle of my pirate/sword fighting phase.
I love how Wesley was allowing Indigo to go to retrieve his sword by shaking the sword a little to go get it or when Idigo threw it up, Wesley waited until Indigo was ready again, my #1 sword fight in any type of movie, Imdigo was fully disarmed at the end there, they were actually having fun with each other to trying out their different forms for sport, fights like this in any movie are ultra rare
Here is a couple bits of trivia. First, every single one of the styles that they mention is a real style of fencing from the Renaissance. Second, they were obviously “Flynning” through the entire fight, rather than using any of the styles that they mentioned. They also looked like they were having a ball playing this scene.
Is anyone else bothered that this website just slaps their watermark on these clips? These movies don’t belong to them. They didn’t make them. And it gets rather annoying when these are the highest quality clips and thus are the best for editing purposes, but you can’t use them because of that obnoxious watermark.
like how each of them wait for the other to get their sword back before continuing the fight. each of them honorable to a dumb degree and i love it. they try to beat each other with their own skill rather than just disarm and strike. most movies do the ladder and tbh its old and not very entertaining.
Not enough mention of the sound design! The tension when the percussion starts! And then they test one another. “Tink-tink! THWIP!……..Tink-tink! THWIP!……” And then they start to duel, and it’s like the brass and the strings are fighting back and forth! And the swords clink together to add to the percussion. Just a flawless scene.
I like how despite the fact that they start out as enemies they generally respect one another for their skill and have a somewhat friendly conversation while trying to kill each other, even Wesley choosing to spare Inigo shows how much respect he has for him, Also who is gonna deny a man his vengeance
Two true professionals there. And I am not talking about the characters. The amount of time necessary to learn just with your dominate hand to pull off a believable scene here would have been considerable. To learn it with both hands probably took more practice time than many stars have spent on entire movies.
I just now noticed that this whole flight scene was just barely over 3 minutes long. Yet it feels like it was longer, and we know it could’ve been longer. Both showed mutual respect for each other and basically wanted nothing more than an honest fair fight. Surely we can all agree that this is how all fights should be based on. Both sides showing respect, and not actually trying to kill one another.
I just like the simplicity of this fight. It has its goofy moments, but for the most part it’s purely just a sword fight. They use actual techniques, they actually try to attack instead of only bouncing the blades against one another, and they don’t pull any wierd tests of strength or spectacle that ruins so many other sword fights.
Its amazing how both of them started with their inferior hand just to “test the waters” and Inigo is happy to admit that Weasley is better but assumes that he would have the upper hand once he uses his superior hand but ultimately loses once Weasley uses his superior hand which turn out to be a surprise as well.
I know this scene takes place in a comedy but it reminds me a lot of a scene from black sails. Vane duels a Spanish naval captain and mortally wounds him. he brings him the last of his rum and discusses the duel and the skill of the dying man with him as he drinks Vane’s last drops of alcohol on his ship. The man asks when he noticed the flaw in his style that opened his killing strike and Vane says something along the lines of “a few moments before you noticed mine. Had I my strike not landed, I’d be the man with the rum in my hands now” The dying Spaniard smiles and says something about how fate Vane still had a purpose
“You are using Bonneti’s defense against me eh?” (A fighting form that refers to Rocco Bonneti who used his skill to ward attacks as he was fatally wounded during a match in front of his school for swordplay during the 1500s) “I found it fitting given the rocky terrain” (acknowledging an attack would be suicidal and giving Inego an unfair opening) “Naturally, you must expect me to attack with Capo Ferro?!” (Using the master to reference the many sword techniques of Ridolfo Capo Ferro da Cagli, who wrote swordplay techniques that could end a match in a single blow) “Naturally, but I find Thibault cancels out Capo Ferro, don’t you?” (Referencing another sword master Girard Thibault d’Anvers whose style showed the correct way to battle a left-handed swordsman and to use attack and defense to your advantage no matter how skilled the opponent is) “Unless the enemy has studied his Agrippa, which I have.” (Another reference to swordplay as Camillo Agrippa, who was an Italian mathematician and engineer, made a notion that any man can defeat the strongest and most skilled opponent by using arithmetic, body weight, and calculation to create the perfect strike and ultimately win a sword duel)
inigo montoya studied fencing for 20 years. westley, a poor farm boy, was captured 5 years ago, was basically held as a cabin boy and when the previous dread pirate roberts died he somehow trained in fencing to the point of being able to differentiate between different styles, fight ambidextrously, and basically school inigo who has 4x the amount of training. now either westley had a very good teacher and he was a very good learner, or there is a bit of artistic license going on here. or westley is one of those guys that is just better than you at everything and makes you want to cry yourself to sleep at night because you’ll never be as good as they are naturally.
Fun fact: It’s stated in the book that this isn’t just two professional swordsmen fighting each other. There’s actually a small bit of symbolism behind it. These two men are fighting with different goals as their drive to win. Wesley is fighting to reunite with his true love. Inigo is fighting to continue searching for the six fingered man and exact his revenge. Love vs Revenge. And as you definitely know, True Love won.
I love that the first few strikes into dodge is just them.sizing eachother up skill wise and realizing they are basically equal. I think the reason Inigo eventually gets frustrated is he’s spent so long practicing to get his revenge now someone is about to stop that and he won’t be able to avenge his father. Inigo didn’t know Wesley wouldn’t kill him so his whole world came crashing down. That’s why he starts getting frustrated and throws his skill out the window for ‘I JUST WANT TO HIT HIM SOMEHOW’ or atleast make Wesley surprised The best part of the whole thing is the clear respect both have for one another.
