How do you join the White Knights?
The Temple Knights are an elite ally to the White Knights. To join the Temple Knights, complete the Recruitment Drive quest. After the Wanted! quest, players can wear White Knight equipment based on how many Black Knights they kill. The White Knights are levels 36/38/39/42 and non-aggressive. They wear white armor and carry white swords. White Knights are popular with medium to high-level players.
Notes: Most White Knights have names that play on words. Some examples are Sir Vyvin (surviving), Sir Renitee (serenity), Sir Amik Varze (ceramic vase), Sir Vey Lance (surveillance), and Sir Tiffy Cashien (certification). The rank of the White Knights can be determined by the color of the plume on their helmet. Initiates have red plumes, proselytes have yellow, acolytes have green, and partisans have blue. Amik Varze is the leader of the White Knights. You can become a White Knight even in non-member worlds if you complete the right quests in members. (The best place to find Black Knights is west of Edgeville Monastery.)
Players as White Knights. After the Recruitment Drive quest, players become Temple Knights, an ancient order with strong ties to the White Knights. The Wanted! quest lets players use White Knight equipment after getting a certain rank in the order. Players’ ranks in the order are different from the plume colors. The plume colors show the ranks you can earn from Temple Knights’ quests. These don’t affect your reputation with the White Knights. Killing Black Knights raises your rank, but killing White Knights lowers it.

Use energy drinks made in the Workshop. Take stones, trees, and grass from expeditions and take home the bundles with resources. Look at your neighbors’ decorations. Clean up at your knight’s camp or remove lava stones from your bride’s estate.
Is Knight Knight a girl?

Fun fact! There are actually ‘metallic’ horses irl. They’re called Akhal Teke horses, it’s a breed, and the shaft of their hair is translucent, which results in the horse being so shiny it does look like metal or crystal. If you’ve seen the copypost of the ‘world’s most beautiful horse’ with a cream-coloured supermodel-looking horse, he’s a Teke. Zelda’s golden horse looks a lot like one.
When you get Spot, you unlock his color pattern onto other horses. If you stay in Hyrule Field, and reload your game after coming across a herd, you can find different colors of the pattern on other horses! There’s a pink one, brown one, blue one, ETC. all beige with spots like Spot. (cannot find a purple spotted horse so i think the colors are limited unfortunately)!!
I was so caught off-guard when i realized that BoTW horses got carried over to ToTK. That actually made my day. I also ran into golden horse while exploring and since it looked unique, I tamed it and went to nearest stable asap which happened to be the quest location. The NPC’s reaction was so good when they mentioned a missing horse and realize i’m literally mounting it right before their eyes lmao.
I still don’t understand why they didn’t just put Epona in this game as a secret horse you could find or acquire somehow. I get you could use an amiibo to get one in breath of the wild, but they made most of the amiibo Awards findable in the game itself, so I’m not sure why they didn’t think to just allow us to go through a series of quests to obtain Links original horse

I love spot so much. He doesn’t have great base stats, but he’s the coolest looking horse I have imo. Great use of the new upgrade feature! Actually you can release the ones from breath of the wild and catch the old horses again. with full stable bring a new horse, then release the old one, cancel the register and get the special horse you want! (I didn’t like the names of my horse from botw an re caught the ganon one) (really wish for a rename horse feature ><)
I have to admit I was a little disappointed with the Golden Horse’s stats, she’s beautiful and all but two of my horses carried over from BotW had better stats than her which was surprising. I just found a horse that has the same robe/ pattern that Spot has but in blue! I already caught Spot thanks to your article but I found that one near Rauru’s geoglyph symbol near a stable west central Hyrule. If anyone is instrested to have one with blue spots instead of dark ones maybe you can find it here! Perhaps it also means there’s more colors of spotted horses than black and blue, maybe brown and pink as well. Edit: I just found one with pink spots as well it’s the cutest. Honestly, I had all of the unique horses in BOTW, but I had that game for the Wii U… So it sadly didn’t carry over. I’m so glad that the White Horse and Giant Horse are still there to catch! I had already given up on finding them again, so it’s a relief that I can just re-register them: I definitely have enough stamina for it, as I just wanted the 2 wheels necessary to get the Master Sword. That plus a few stamina-healing meals is usually enough for me to catch any horse in the game.
I’ve been looking for info on how to get the other 2 horses from BotW on TotK, but always got the “import from game” and I’m like dude… I can’t, I had the WiiU version, so felt a bit lost. Thank you so much for being straight to the point and informative! Now I can complete my horsie collection lol
I watch my husband play this game. Its very interesting and cool. Hes got Spot, the giant white horse, and he has Royal from botw one already but could not keep it on Tears of the Kingdom bc he played the expansion set. I want him to get the others, they are so beautiful. I love horses so I love seeing all the unique horses and wild horses.
I ran it to duel peaks stable too, because i just found it, and i didnt know if there was any stable closer, and i tried to take a few shortcuts to my deep regret, so i had to backtrack a few times, it felt like it took forever to get him to the stable. But i did it, no guides no spoilers no nothing. 😀
regarding the mini stable at the lookout: i had it locked throughout my whole playthough and went to try and unlock it, little did i know that there was a second requirement: opening the center of the lookout by talking to the guard, this may by what you’re not doing if you have yet to unlock it after doing temples as a heads up!
Not gonna lie, even though you can’t change anything about their gear or manes, I do love the giant horses. Even if they can’t sprint and have a low speed stat, they still go pretty fast on account of their stride being so huge, and they trample absolutely anything in their path. I actually like to use them for hunting moose in the tundra. Using a huge horse to ram into the moose saves on arrows and weapon durability. XD
I have a problem I did my main botw safe file in master mode, so my horses don’t transfer over. Do you know how I can fix this or do I just need to catch them again either way is fine. I just wondered because I did normal mode and then I restarted, but then I did master mode and completed it on master mode and made that my main safe.
So in my switch botw i had 4 horses. Epona, clip clop (zelda horse), Stallone (ganon horse), and Bert (just some all black one i found at the beginning and was like okay fine). Well the stats didn’t stay the same from botw because bert in totk became a full star all stat god of a horse. (In botw he was an average 2 or 3 star) who can pull. So its safe to say bert will be my go to
About the Epona of on time only thing, I have my doubts. Not sure about the second update, but in the first update, I was able to get my Epona from amiibo before reaching a stable. Then when I got there since I had botw data and I got a second Epona and now I have two Eponas. But, the thing is that sometimes when I scan the amiibo I get a third Epona lol.
It should be noted that taming or having a Giant horse is required for one of the shrine quests, since the NPC won’t let you have the crystal until you bring one to them (Registering isn’t required iirc) For the mini stable part, there are actually some areas where you do the same thing you did on the mini stable for Koroks. Guides be teaching us how to catch horses, but not much if at all with what happens to the horses if you release the unique horses. I need to know if the ones I have aren’t “release and you never see another horse of that variant ever again”
i had a interesting thing happen recently. i had transferred my BotW horse over to TotK which included epona, but when i went to go scan my ssb link 2 days later, it still summoned epona but an unregistered epona that was separate from my epona that was transferred over from BotW. maybe it was a glitch or something, but it was cool. i reloaded a save from before i scanned the ssb linkand saved just incase. i want to see if it happens again the next time i scan that amiibo while i’m streaming (to have a record of it) and then try to register the new epona if it does just to see what happens.
the amiibo does NOT get you epona “one time only.” i have both of those amiibos and i’ve had it happen where they both spawn epona at the same time (so i have 2 wild eponas running around) and i’ve also had it spawn epona when i already have her registered with the stable system. i actually took a screenshot just this morning of epona in my paddock at my house… and epona from an amiibo standing next to her. i’m kinda curious what would happen if i tried to register epona twice… i’ll have to leave that extra horse slot open and see.
Hi Austin, while looking around for a 5 star horse at your given location i actully found another spot at least a very similar one this “spot” has a white mane instead of black. horse are a very large part of my time when i play because im always looking for the best, i just thouight it was very intersting to find possible another unique spot, its the first ive seen in the overworld not from a quest Edit: The horse is white with brown spots all over with a white mane, is this horse unique or not?
Okay so I noticed I gave my unique horses names I didn’t like. Like the giant horse/Ganon’s horse I didn’t like the name I gave it so I went back in botw and released and recaught it expecting it to transfer the change into totk, however it didn’t. Can I release and recapture the giant horse in totk and rename it? I don’t want to release it to not get it anymore.
I’ve been able to get Epona several times, I actually saw 3 of her—I had one imported from the most ancient times of BotW over 6 years ago, but then scanning both amiibo that give her out in TotK, I was able to get her twice more, so it doesn’t even seem to be a one-time thing. I don’t quite get how it works?
Not sure if common knowledge yet, but you CAN catch horses you already caught in BOTW. I had the Giant Horse and Zelda’s White Stallion carried over from BOTW, but I gave them really dumb ways. 1. You can either fill your entire stable with other horses, and when the stable is full and you want to register another horse, you can release one of your old horses. 2. Or you can kill off the horses you no longer want, but the unique horses won’t respawn unless you also remove them from the Revive list at Malanya. Meaning you’d have to kill, for example, the Giant Horse, and then kill 10 other random horses you’ve registered for the Giant Horse to be wiped out of the Revive list. If you do either of those 2, to completely remove a horse from any listing. The unique ones will respawn at the next Blood Moon. I’ve just done this for both the Giant Horse and Zelda’s White Stallion!

Epona so elusive that i had to release few of them and it was not the first try of scan. I had 2 from save of BoW so i stay with this nr – basicly if i get it from card or figure I release to register for stable points.(Its usualy Zelda from SmashBross but got from Link(s?) to). Maby its becose i do the scaning when i’m close to stable. Zeldas Golden Horse and the Frost Gleeok (I did kill it with quite low stats and no knowlage how to so it was mostly got 1 hit and reload since i did not want to loose my 2 fairys)
Idk why, but I left the giant white stallion and Ganons horse where they were. I completed the quests where people wanted to see them, but then took them back. They looked so happy where they were, and I wasn’t honestly going to use them, I have the 20 horse. 😂 The whole time I was taking them all the back, I was telling myself this is ridiculous, they aren’t real! 💀
ive only done it once so im not sure if it happens multiple times, but when i boarded spot at the mini stable in lookout landing, lester said something along the lines of “ill be happy to spend time with him” and it was so sweet. i did rename him, but i still call him spot. his official name is Lester lol edit: i tried it again and he says “Thank you. I’m glad to spend some time with Spot again.”
First; I love your articles! Secondly IMO; Spot isn’t that unique of a horse, beside having a previous owner AND name. He’s pretty slow. When I first watched this article I went out and got him (he was the only one I didn’t have) and after riding around on him I’ve noticed a variety of spotted horses blond and red, sadly none of the spotted horses are that fast, despite being very pretty. I swapped Spot for blond spotted horse and I call her Blondie ❤😂 My next step is to upgrade her speed I got some cooking to do. And I want to end by saying thanks for putting out such detailed awesome articles ❤
I like to name my horses based on lore as much as possible. In Breath of the Wild, I used these names between 2 plays. (Note: found out my data on Wii U & my Master Mode exclusive play on switch won’t transfer so I have to recapture these in tears) Epona: obtained from amiibo & you can’t change her name (already re-obtain her in tears) Storm: Royal white horse, I named him after Zeldas horse in the comics. Catherine: commonly referred to as Links fake horse. Excuse me princess but I named her after Links horse in the cartoon & comics. I noticed in the cartoon she had white hooves so the fake horse felt more right then the real one based on the amiibo. She has 5 stars in stamina & 4 in everything else. I may try again for this one with the same stats in tears if there is stable room after getting all special horses. Puini: a black & white horse & found that looked similar to Sir Ravens horse in the Oracle manga so I named it after his horse. I made certain to get it as the only combo with 5 stars in speed. Dunno if I will have room to do this one again in tears as I feel Catherine beats this one. Anope: The Giant horse is clearly Ganon’s horse. Ganon’s horse has no official name. I just got a good laugh on miiverse one day from a troll that suggested ganon’s horse could be Epona spelled backwards. Think about it & you should get the joke. Other popular names for the Giant horse I read are Dragmire ( After Ganondorf Dragmire) & Phantom ( after the description used for Phantom Ganon’s horse in OOT) but in reality Ganon likly only called his horse, Horse as I doubt he cared enough about it to actually name it.
Fun fact- you can get the golden horse before starting the side quest. I just saw it while checking the nearby geoglyph- never even saw the stable as I just went a straight line across the mountains, and noticed it standing nearby. Once I got back and tried to board it, the guy pointed me to the quest lady then there was some funny dialogue.
There’s 1 Horse out there (also in Breath) like no other: the game’s Fastest horse.\r \r I named mine SpeedO back in Breath but I love it so much, I caught it again. It’s the only Horse in the game that can outrun lightning – so, this time I of course named mine Lightning! ⚡ It’s found near the Tabantha grasslands, one of a possible trio.
Fun fact, you could actually get Epona more than once with the Amiibo. At least, I did. I got her 3 times, twice in one day and then once another time. One Epona is at my house near Tarrey Town, and the other is boarded. I never got on the third spawn of Epona, and she eventually despawned, so I only have two currently. I think that may have been a glitch in the game though, since I haven’t gotten her after the game updated the first time.
For the Spot quest: after I finished the 1st Regional Phenomena, the repair the mini stable was available. I finished all the tear memories but still just 1 Regional Phenomena and no quest for Spot yet. I think maybe after the 2nd Regional Phenomena ? Gonna confirm this after another 100 hrs of play I guess

Can you upgrade the stats of the unique horses (of course, guessing you cannot give them stats they don’t have, but can you get the stats they do have to 5-stars)? If not, other than collecting them, getting your own horse and upgrading it with the Horse God seems like the best thing so you can have a pure 5-star stat horse…..
I guess my game has a bug then because I already had Epona frowm BOTW and I got her a second time in TOTK and a THIRD TIME while going through my amiibo cards again for weapons and other things XD I didn’t registered the third one tho, the second one yes because I didn’t know at the time that my horses from BOTW would be imported
I had Zelda’s white horse but at some point she despawned for some reason and when I went to a stable to take her out again it said she wasn’t registered. 😭 I’m not that far in the game yet, so It’s gonna take ages to hopefully get her back. I hope I can just get her at the spot you marked on your map.
I have to say I’m a bit disappointed by the horses in Totk. As someone who had all the unique ones in botw, and who doesn’t really dig the look of the gold one for whatever reason, the only new horses are Spot and the big white. However, it is cool that you can enhance any horse now and I haven’t really started on that yet. That’s a good feature though. I need to think about what coat out of the whole game i like best to turn into an uber horse.
I had a full stable in BoTW and was very surprised that they carried over in ToTK when I tried to register my first horse. Also, the fact that they just keep giving you more register slots the more Pony Points you have is hilarious to me; I already have the special horses, why do they think I need so many more horses??
I went to school in Malaysia for a couple of years and I was given the choice of long pants or shorts. I chose long. On my first day of school all the kids said “wow you must be very rich”. I wasnt ( by western standards) so I said “no, I’m not rich, why do you say that.”. They”because you have longs pants – you can afford the extra fabric”. Our ancestors were intelligent when it came to keeping warm, and keeping cool. Wool breathes, even in the hottest weather. So does linen. They wore fashion as they found it attractive at the time. We cannot judge by modern standards when we have unlimited fabrics to choose from, and they did not. They had use what was available.
Good quality wool is wonderful stuff. The really good stuff will float. It will still keep you warm when its wet, IF it still has its lanolin. Living and working on the damp cold north west coast of British Columbia, good quality heavy wool clothing was a valuable thing to have. Wool was one of the products that went from west to east along the silk roads.
Another superb article! This website should be mandatory to watch in all schools! It’s funny to think about fashion today, compared to back then. If I’m honest, I think we’re being even more ridiculous today, and the reason is very simple. In the Middle Ages, the cloth might vary in color and material, but the shapes remained broadly the same. Today however, when you watch the fashion shows, and what people wear on the catwalks, even the very shape and size of the clothings, seems incredibly excessive. I imagine ‘fancy clothing’ back then, was still more practical than fancy clothing today.
The “wild men” incident (my teacher used to call it “the dance of fireflies”, not sure where it comes from) happened to Charles VI. of France and it was allegedly one of the reasons why he lost his marbles. Edit: Googled that later. Yes, its called the “ball of burning men” (Bal des Ardents), but honestly, “the dance of fireflies” is almost sadistically poetic.
The sumptuary laws were adopted to prevent people who were wealthy (usually from trade) from imitating the clothing of the hereditary nobility. Keep in mind that the nobility had a prominent role in governing the kingdom because they participated in the heriditary legislative bodies which adopted laws and levied taxes. (In England, the House of Lords, which had a veto on legislation and tax laws until around 1905.) The sumptuary laws restricted wearing certain fabrics and furs to different levels in society, with wearing the richest and most costly to royalty. As noted, rich traders and merchants who could afford to do so often dressed above their social status. Keep in mind that knights were not “nobles,” which in the UK, are dukes, marquises, earls, viscounts and barons, who sat in the House of Lords. Knights were fighting men who fought during wars, were often the offspring of noble families, and many were elected to the House of Commons. Children of the monarchs often received noble titles, which is why Princes William and Harry are now dukes.
Love your articles, and this is a joke post for a bit of fun. I saw a picture once of a modern day soldier from USA wearing a hat. He was likely from New York and a fan of the American sport known as baseball, because he was wearing a baseball cap. Baseball being a generally short lived sport as it has existed for less than 1000 years. Surely I hope people of the future don’t make such generalizations as we do of the past because I am an American Airman, and I hate wearing baseball caps.
Lately I’ve wondered what knights and men-at-arms would wear when they were on the march and had reasonable expectation of possible contact with enemy in the form of an ambush or harriers while en route. Would they wear the full armor kit and risk exhaustion? Or would they wear lighter alternative gear (or in case of men-at-arms who didn’t necessarily have a retinue, strip off parts of the kit)?

The single most important parameter by far that people today use to judge a product is it’s price. And I don’t think medieval people were any different. I would love more emphasis on that aspect, I understand that pure monetary value is very hard to determine but just telling us how many manhours it took to weave and sew one shirt or how many pairs of pants you could buy for one pig would be super interesting.
“Medieval clothing is silly, why would someone wear something like that ?” Well, why would someone wear a heavy gold neck chain and replace one of his teeth with a gold piece that looks like the tooth he already had ? Why would you wear a belt if your pants are so low people can see your underwear ? Truth be told, viking-rus clothing were awesome, better looking than a dress made out of meat
Landachneckts, and some other mercenaries wore their best clothes to battle as well as in daily life; their fine clothes would get torn and cut to peices over time; this is supposedly the origin of the slits and cut prevalent in Renaissance fashion. The equivalent of high fashion brands selling ‘distressed’ jeans that look like a heavily worn and beat up working mans pants.
Are 1o60s Carnaby Street fashions (or hair styles!) any more absurd than fashions of 500 or 600 years ago? When was the last time anyone saw a pair of elephant bellbottom pants outside of a costume shop? They were as common in 1968 as Neru jackets. I’m not so sure it’s at all fair to judge the past . Even 1980s hair styles look strange today.
It would’ve been nice if you elaborated more on the knights rather than the general population. I mean, the title did state that it was about what the knights wore and though you briefly answered that, not enough detail was put into it. Just want to help you and your website out. I love the content, you just need to stick to the point a bit more before to satisfy the viewer before moving on to more general things. If I wanted to know how society dressed, I would have looked for that, but I wanted to know about the knights. Nice article though.
Back then clothes were worth a lot or a little depending on colour and material… now you could have the rarest materials known to man and an big allaberat outfit that you can put together for about a ten quid and on the other hand you can have leaf attached to a string to cover yourself made from modern day slavery and could cost thousands of pounds/dollars because it has a specific pattern on it e.g. Louis voton.. or armani or guicci
Basically a dress with leggings and an outer garment. I don’t know if they had sumptuary laws, but you didn’t dress above your station – in more recent times, we were advised to dress at work for the position we aspired to – don’t dress like your friends in the secretarial pool, dress like your supervisor or even the department head. Also, some colors were reserved for royalty.
I like your articles and I enjoy the style a lot, it’s very educational and fun, but I believe you have a misconception about the islamic Viking trade there: as far as I’m aware, this supposed Arab writing was found in only one single grave and, according to studies outside the political corectness range, rather than “writing” it’s just common Viking symbols weathered away partially, making them look like it might be something different. Now, of course, Viking did travel the world a lot and it might be that they got their hands on something made in the Arabic world, but personally I would be more careful about such claims, as the evidence is very little, if any, and the study claiming Vikings were muslim because of this one cloth was made by someone very inclined to please the politically correct media – which, of course, blew the “find” completely out of proportion.

King Charles VI (Chuck the nutcase) performed in a dance with five members of the French nobility. Their costumes were decorated with tar and flax. Charles’s brother Louis, Duke of Orléans. got too close with a torch and Voila! King kabab! You’re telling me the guy shelled out all that coin for armor and he’s not going to wear it to impress people and pick up girls. I don’t think so. There was a movie called Excalibur released in 1981. There was this knight who had sex in full armor w helm on visor down. He did not even take off his codpiece. He just slid it over to one side.
Maybe people think the way they did things is because they were primitive. In modernity we have this idea that today is better then yesterday when in fact they did the same things we do, differently. The same attitude holds for anyone that decides to live without what is considered high technology or refined society. Native Americans or the equivalent in other nations are still thought of as primitive even though they are the same people in the same time.
Do you think the Black Knight wore black underwear? But seriously, modern fashions are diabolical, clothes have never looked so garish and jeans must be the scruffiest most impractical thing to wear. Synthetic materials feel awful to wear. If todays shops sold medieval clothes – I would buy them gladly if not just to be comfy.
