How Lies Destroy A Marriage?

Lying is a common issue in relationships, but it can also lead to harm. Trust and authenticity are essential for intimacy, and lying can block these aspects. Pathological lying is incompatible with intimacy, and some people put up with it due to poor treatment or hope for promises. Other less-talked behaviors that can destroy a relationship include demanding constant connection, disclosure, and no space away from your partner.

Lies can erode trust, as they can lead to suspicion and doubt, which undermines the foundation of the marriage. To overcome lies, one must acknowledge the lie, offer a mature apology, listen to your spouse and validate their emotions, ask what your partner needs from you to get their trust back, be honest with yourself, and learn to communicate openly.

Lies can also lead to cover-up lies and omissions that can be hard to remember. Even a single lie can destroy the relationship, as even a lie from omission is still a lie. When lying in a marriage, it shows that you do not respect your partner enough, which poses a serious problem in the marriage.

Lying destroys trust by preventing deeper, empowering conversations and leading to more lying and deception. Dishonesty extends healing time and portrays a person as untrustworthy. To rebuild a relationship, one must first disclose something risky or personal to their partner, express their vulnerability, and tell them how nervous you feel sharing it. By understanding and addressing these lies, couples can strengthen their marriages and help them become the marriage of their dreams.

Is lying grounds for divorce?

One reason people get divorced is because their spouse lied to them. If one spouse lies, it makes it hard to stay together. Some people can’t live with, work with, or raise children with someone they don’t trust. Dishonesty can hurt children, other relatives, and the marriage. If you or someone close to you has caught your spouse in a lie, you can find out more about what to do if you marry someone who is dishonest.

Re-write or cancel prenuptial agreements. Americans are getting married later in life. After starting a business, an adult may want to use a prenuptial agreement to protect their assets. If you lie about money before you get married, your prenuptial agreement might not be legal. If a spouse doesn’t tell the truth about their income, debts, and assets, the agreement might not be valid. If you find out that someone has been dishonest, you can cancel the agreement or change it if the marriage goes ahead.

Mediation and Counseling. Counseling during marriage helps both parties talk about their feelings and decide how to move forward. A mediator can help you have a calm conversation. A mediator is useful when one or both partners have trouble expressing their feelings. If you’re dishonest in a relationship, it hurts both of you. If you don’t talk about it, it’s hard to fix.

Can a marriage survive after lies?

Some affairs can ruin a marriage, but it can still be hard to recover from the betrayal. If you’ve been lying to your partner for a long time, it can be hard to trust again. What’s the difference between being secretive and private in relationships? You may choose to keep some parts of your life private. Should you share everything with your partner? It depends on what you think is yours and why.

When should you walk away from a liar?

We’ve all been in relationships where the other person wasn’t honest. Maybe they lied about their past, their current situation, or where they were last night. It’s painful to realize someone you trusted lied to you, but it’s not your fault. Get out of a victim mindset. Things happen. How you respond determines your future. If you’re in an untruthful relationship, take a step back and assess the situation. Is this a one-time thing or a pattern? Are they lying because they can’t talk to you? If so, are you willing to change how you respond to their honesty? If they lied to you, will they be honest with you in the future? If it’s a pattern, it may be time to move on. You deserve someone honest and respectful. But then you have to think about how to move forward, especially if it involves a marriage and kids. Sometimes it’s a choice between money and love. It takes courage to walk away from someone you care about, but it’s sometimes the best thing to do. Without trust, there can be no love, and a healthy relationship becomes toxic. There are many ways to cope. For example, surround yourself with supportive people. They love you and want what’s best for you. Lean on them during this difficult time. You don’t have to go through this alone. Self-care can also be healing. Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, exercise, eat well, and do things that make you happy. Treat yourself with kindness and relaxation techniques to identify your own patterns and coping mechanisms. It’s okay to feel sad. Take time to grieve the loss of the relationship.

Journaling, talking to a therapist, or joining a support group can help. Don’t let someone else’s dishonesty make you feel less valuable or damage your self-worth. You are worthy of love and respect. You deserve someone honest and trustworthy. You will find that person. If moving on is scary, speak up and set boundaries. If you want honesty, you have to be honest too. Don’t worry about making friends. Being honest will always get you the right ones. I’m 18 and a boy in my college asked me out. We went on a casual date. I told him I wasn’t interested because we were too different. He’s spreading nasty rumors about me. He’s also making my friends against me. What should I do?

  • My husband of like 24 years wouldn’t watch the tiktoks but he has just started perusal your you tubes. I started with the car one!!! Cos it was so funny!! He thought it was good too. Now he realises I’m not attacking him I want us to learn together ❤❤❤ we re both turning 60!!! Thank you Jimmy! It’s never too late and of course I only look 40 😂😅😂😅😂😅😂

  • I’m perusal your articles for about a month now, and more and more, I can see how emotionally immature I’ve been in my marriage… It’s not easy to see your articles and being punched in the stomach 😅😂, coz that’s how I feel whenever I see something I need to work on. I’m blessed to have a husband who’s been helping me to improve. Thanks a lot for the counsels you provide. You’re a blessing for those who actually want to have a happy, strong and healthy marriage, one that can last a lifetime, coz that’s our goal…

  • I love this! The pace is a little fast for me, so I watched it several times ! Thank you. I hope I’m more skilled and mature in my next relationship. It takes courage to admit my own faults and it took courage to realize as well that it wasn’t all my fault even if I was assigned or was pushing back and wanted family counseling or was doing my own work. Thanks again Jimmy for a brilliant spoof! I keep wanting the wigged you to shave off the slight beard but it’s actually more powerful with it! I’d love to forward this to my adult children but we are estranged since the divorce 2009 after a long separation. God knows what is in store for us. I’m coming back after Covid and have been healing traumas and neglects all my life. Becoming an expressive Artist has helped and learning about what allows love to work inspires me. I’m more hopeful now even if 73! Keep up the great work!

  • My partner and I had almost this exact issue. We both took it upon ourselves to take therapy separately and together in a couple therapy where our arguments were no longer able to be a “who’s right and why?” And became so much more understanding. I’ve never been able to communicate with a partner this way before and it feels so much better. If you ever feel like your arguments are heavy and scary to approach, from either side, let someone come in and help mediate that and navigate you and your partner through the emotions and feelings lost in translation when we are hurt or angry. Love this website how it takes those dynamics and makes it informative and lighthearted instead of heavy and harsh. ❤🎉

  • I really wish you would become a therapist, or coach. WITH Emily. You get it! I’m assuming you both do even though I haven’t seen her in your YouTube’s. My boyfriend would listen to you bc you speak his language. I truly believe he’s listen and engage bc you GET HIM bc you are/were and are growing from where he is. And Emily has probably grown from where I am. You two are equal to any therapist and the years they have behind them if you received the professional guidance and license. I just know he would listen to you. And I’m so ready to give up again, except for good this time. There’s only so much you can change and you can endure. But please consider what I’m saying.

  • So true!! As a frw have mentioned it’s a tougher pill to swallow so yo speak whem ypu’re actually living it day in and day out….almost 15 years in a relationship and 27 years difference in our age. Nope can’t talk about that. I’m too emotional and his fear of abondamment makes me want him to just go away. Harsh, I know. We just sleep in separate rooms and pretend to be married. I wonder how much longer I can do this.

  • I’m trying to become more aware of my trauma and triggers and how that affects my relationships. Usually I at least try to be open about communicating it with the people around me, as it’s happening. But it’s difficult when I don’t feel like I’m talking to someone who’s actually understanding what I’m saying, Or willing to help me find a solution. They are often not willing to do anything on their end to make it any easier. They just complain about what an inconvenience it is, no matter how hard I do try to manage it on my own. And even if they’re not explicitly complaining, they often gawk about it behind my back. So unfortunately the issues of feeling emotionally abandoned continue to get worse, when every time I do try to be vulnerable with people, It’s basically being weaponized against me. The other problem is that I do try to merge my needs with the other person’s, But that’s difficult when they are just assuming that I’m changing myself to conform to them. They are stigmatizing what I am trying to move away from. It’s very annoying because they are essentially dismissing what could very well be my own genuine desires, Which I do actually have in common with them, Because they always assume it’s just bandwagoning. And because it’s being dismissed and pushed aside, I never really get the chance to indulge in them. It basically feels like I’m being cucked out of doing anything that I actually want to do with my life or myself, Because people are always assuming it’s not genuine.

  • It can be very helpful to see the funny side of an extremely serious situation, especially when it’s done in the right way, and it seems like you’ve found your calling, as they used to say! It’s important to add that I’m aware that it’s much easier to laugh if the “relationship” is over with though. I’ve mentioned before that you look like my brother when he was younger, which is still the case. I might even send him one of your articles soon. 😊

  • The first initial feeling or judgment Etc that we have in regards to any situation in the world, or in another is only how we can feel about our cells. It is impossible to have a feeling how about something externally that you do not already have created within you internally. That’s why no one can make you feel guilt or shame unless you choose to. It comes from within, the same as no one can make you feel loved unless you already love yourself fully.❤

  • 😂😂😂😂👍 Btw, I observed something within my family. My brother seems to be open to do that work for closeness etc for his relationship(s), now marriage to a certain degree, BUT not regarding his relationships with our Mom, Dad or me. Do you have also such examples? Great work! Love your content, Jimmy! Emily must be very proud of what you have achieved, even when I guess it’s an life long process between both partners, right? Lots of blessings from Germany!

  • This one is great! Lots of information. I had to watch it several times. Love the sarcasm, my mind accepts the mirror easier that way. JIMMY, do you recommend any books or exercises to get to secure attachments? Skits on examples of identifying anxious or avoidant quickly on first or second dates? Why are anxious and avoidant attracted so strongly? How can we support you for all of this great info?

  • Another masterpiece! These articles really hit home. This gets across very well, fundamentally. I sent this to the covert narcissist. Do you think he will be mad at me ? 😉Especially when he sees himself and hearing all of those things he’s done on the destroy list to me? It was nonstop, over and over again, cycle after cycle while he was in a trance, fixated on my pain and sufferring as he looked pleasured in getting his fulfillment.

  • My partner of 7 years (who I am currently separated from) and I switched roles constantly. Was so freaking confusing. I bet we both have disorganized attachment styles…. But he doesn’t seem at all interested in healing attachment, trauma, codependency, etc. there has to be a more “logical” reason for our problems apparently. Couples therapy is an option but he won’t open up to her or go to his own individual counselor because he “doesn’t need that”. His mom did the best she could. He’s reconciled with father who ran off when he was 2 weeks old due to the crippling self esteem issues of becoming a paraplegic overnight and then eventually got married and had two daughters and raised a happy family. Yeah no, I’m just unreasonable and emotionally unstable. Forget the fact that there are holes in the walls and cabinets all over our house from his meltdowns…. When I get frustrated after years of feeling invisible and scream and hit my arm against the arm of an already broken chair (guess who did that…), then I am “SCARY” 😂😂😅😅

  • U forgot to tell ‘em to call their friends CONSTANTLY and complain to them about EVERYTHING little and big thing instead of dealing with the source and then if the source don’t wanna deal then just keep staying in separate bedrooms but find another friend to call and bitch to cuz the other one is GONE

  • How to destroy your relationship? By telling the woman you’re having sex with to get out of your apartment & don’t come back. Then get drunk & knock on her door at 2 a.m. & tell her she’s the one you want while still allowing every woman around to walk into your apartment any time of day or night when they feel like it… Forgive & forget – forgive him because he’s not worth the trouble losing sleep over & then forget about him so he’s no longer in your life… Blessings come in many ways 😊
