  • Im in south east Washington state. Im a mobile dj and also play for local bars. I play for very diverse crowds. Everything from edm, country to Latin and Mexican banda. Most events are 4hrs for dancing and additional hrs for reception and one more for cocktail. 4-6 hrs is the most common time span. Anything more tends to annoy the crowd and people tend to leave early

  • My wedding receptions in Ontario Canada are also quite long. We also play till 1:00 AM. It adds up from 4 to 6 hours of dancing depending on Meal and Speech duration. Similar to you Brian I do get to play off the beaten path songs. If we do Ceremony and set up we can spend as much as 12 hours on site as well,

  • In Montana most my weddings start at about 4pm (ceremony) and then reception goes to 11pm. But that’s because I put 11pm as my end time in my contract. I have found that pushing the party any later has diminishing returns. And I explain to client that packing up will take about an hour so by the time I leave it’s usually a lil after midnight.   • Washington, D.C. Virginia, and Maryland service area. For like the last 10 years weddings have become a 6 hour event as a standard. Most are all at the same venue, and outdoor ceremonies are what most couples want to do. The ceremony is usually at either 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. and starts 5 to 15 minutes late! Ceremony is a 30 minute time slot, but sometimes ceremony is only 15 minutes long. Then there is a cocktail hour located at another part of the venue. Sometimes inside, but often this is also outside. There is about a 10 to 15 minute window after cocktail hour for getting the guests into the reception room or tent if that is outside. Then reception starts and is 4 hours to 4.25 hrs long. SOME weddings are 5.5 hours, and some are 6.5 hours, maybe I do 1 every other year at 7 hours total time. 6 hour cer/cocktails/rec is like 80% of weddings here. 20 years ago, everything was crammed into a 4 to 5 hour time frame. 6 hour wedding events were unheard of in 2003 here!

  • In Canada ceremony often starts between 3 and 4 pm, then cocktail usually goes for about one hour, reception dinner and dancing usually ends sometime between 11 pm to 2am… Every wedding is different, it all depends on the group you’re dealing with and the money they are paying you for your time obviously.

  • I’,m from Dubrovnik, Croatia. As many of my colleagues in Mobile DJ community we do mostly international type of events, mainly weddings. It is a summer affair mostly, from mid May to end of September. Receptions are mainly done at the terraces, beaches and other open spaces so timeline is like this. 5-6 pm guests arrive, cocktails and such, dinner from 7/7.30 to say 9, sometimes 10 depending on type of dinner. Speeches and first dance follow and usually it’s party time from 10 do midnight. Croatian weddings are completely different. Start is maybe a little later, 7 od 8 pm, but they tend to go till 4 am or even 5. 😉 And there are dance breaks between each course.

  • I live in the Wales in the UK and most weddings aren’t free bars and I usually setup by 7pm and finishes around 12ish but we don’t really start playing to a full dance floor until 9/9:30pm as they’ll have buffet food first.   • I think the bar being open for beer has an impact, but I think it’s largely because of tradition. It’s just what we do. That said, I’ve done a few dry weddings and they’ve been some of the hardest partying weddings I’ve done, some going past midnight. 11 is becoming more common for venues around here. Staff want to get home, there’s less value for them as drinking slows down and they aren’t making as much at the bar anymore (especially if the floor is packed). I’ll sometimes throw on Shots during that time to just give the bar some added revenue.
