i‘m trying not to buy something too clonky and too “uncomfortable” she isn’t a big jewelry person and wants it to be as simple as possible. through some sneaky questions i found out she wants a plain band and a cushion cut stone. i want to find a balance between comfortable and not coming across cheap. (no she doesn’t care about that at all, i just don’t want to come across like i don’t care) any advice on diamond size? any experience?
If you are going to set diamond in real gold (yellow), then you can comfortably go down in “color” up to K, and spend the same amount in increasing the Carat, Cut and Clarity, which are much more important parameters in bring the “fire” in them. Most salesmen confuse you color with clarity and make you go to colors D, E, F, which is surely not valuable for the price difference they have, especially if you’re going for gold jewelry. Most Indians dislike any other metal other than real gold, so I do not have experience with other non-yellow metals like platinum, white gold, etc.

Such a great point. Typically it seems, many people that are looking for a stone seem to forget the 4 C’s when looking for one when they see the “sparkle” in the stores. I think the lights in the stores are deceiving and tend to make even a low quality stone look pretty and sparkly. I’ve learned that a good test after a salesperson has helped you select one, is to take the stone to a window with natural lighting to see how much sparkle it has. A jeweler taught me that many years ago and said it was important because most of us aren’t standing under the brilliant lighting a store has most of our days. I found this to be a good test for myself after I have narrowed down the most important factors of the 4 C’s. Personally I prefer, as you said, the prettier stone over a few points of a carat. There’s this thing in our heads about having a 1 carat diamond but knowing the price goes up dramatically between a 0.90 and a 1.00 makes me rethink things. Jill u did it again!!! I bought my wedding band at Costco in NYC it had the five C’s. So happy I went there. My hubby initially went to Zales. I could tell with my baked eye it had sooooo many flaws. I did get my engagement ring in the diamond district in NYC. Oh my so many to choose from. If a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow it won’t have that amazing sparkle and brilliance, Color and Clarity are the areas to sacrifice, we wound up choosing a beautiful diamond for my Engagement ring and you would never know it’s in the “Near Colorless” range,even when it’s dirty,there is still a sparkle ! First of all thank you ad we need more of these type of articles on YouTube. You have added another subscriber. And a fellow gem educated enthusiast. Who dabbles in precious gems for myself and family members. Emeralds, Rubies, Tanzanite ( which I love) diamonds of course and opals etc.. I understand the safety of where to purchase the right stones. I only deal with GIA cert stones. This way I know what I am getting. Earth mined only. For me it is quite simple. Over 1 carat, has to be VVS 1-2 clarity, round brilliant although the right clarity and color and I would consider a European cut. As for the forth C I prefer the D to H range. Unless of course it is a fancy. The kinda should be a 5th option. Earth mined ( which I only buy ) and the lab grown. Which I will do my beat to avoid. Part of the reason I only purchase verified GIA stones . I am rather stingy when it comes to the stones I purchase. Origin has become a large part of the diamond market that everyone should be aware of. Try to avoid conflict diamonds as much as possible. Once again having the GIA report is one way to keep yourself and purchase on track. The other is understanding the 4 C’s well. Knowing the right light, 10 power loop, the table, outlet, girdle etc. Round brilliant cuts never seem to ho out of style like some other cuts do. But I do like cushion and emerald cuts as well and usually when they are into the fancy color scales. There is something that had become a serious issue. Sourcing stones out of the middle east.
