Very helpful article! What gets my goat is when I see people posting on Facebook groups, “Can anyone make me this cake for a reasonable price?” Their definition of “reasonable” always means something along the lines of what you pay for a gross discount grocery store cake, and the photos are always of fairly elaborate designs that take hours to make. It bugs me so much that they find it “reasonable” for people like us to work for free!
One should also not compare against supermarket store bought cakes that use wholesale bulk purchase premixes from cakes made from scratch with real ingrediants. My cost price for loaf type chocolate cake is generally double a store bought chocolate cake but tastes way better. Quality must be priced accordingly. I loved the business information! But it felt really rushed. You didn’t take a breathe 😂. I’m thinking about starting to sell my cupcakes so this was helpful. I liked that u said to follow the local laws. Do u then have to pay tax? Do u ask for cash when being paid? Venmo ? Check? Do u let people come to your house to collect? If so, doesn’t that seem dangerous? I was wondering how to get the cupcakes into the persons hands snd I’m conflicted. I was thinking maybe it’s easier to sell to restaurants? But there are probably rules about that. Anyway I liked the article thank you! I also like your cupcake decorating and cake ones. I bought those really large tips with the ruffle look- u make it look easier and they do use a lot of frosting. But pretty. I enjoy your enthusiasm –
Thank you, appreciate the tips. I baked to survive during covid and accounting for all cost, I was baking for free! Now with the cost of ingredients like whipping cream, butter and chocolate escalating, I’ve stopped baking. Plus I hadn’t charged for my time, even at minimum wage 😌 I’m now looking at cake recipes which are quick and affordable.
Thanks, very helpful! It’s hard to price when you’re trying to hit not too low, but not too high. Remembering ALL that goes in the price is very important and I need to work on that. Could you do a article sometime on how to safely transport different cake styles and do you assemble on site or ahead of time? That also would add cost correct? Thanks so much for your articles!
