How To Dress For Pear Shape?

This guide provides tips on how to dress for a pear body shape, which is characterized by large hips, a defined waist, and slim arms and shoulders. A-line dresses are ideal for pear-shaped bodies as they give the illusion of a slimmer waist and narrower hips. To balance out the wider hips with the defined waist, it is essential to add volume on the top and emphasize the upper body. High-rise jeans and pants with stretchy waistbands are perfect for pear-shaped women with a belly, while off-the-shoulder necklines broaden narrow shoulders to balance wide hips.

For pear-shaped women, maxi dresses are versatile and flattering options, with flowy and breathable designs that allow for elegance. To dress up a maxi dress, pair it with stiletto shoes or sandals, or flat sandals or sports shoes. Pear shapes are easy to determine, as their hips are wider than their shoulders and their shoulders may be on the narrow side.

Top 11 wedding dresses for a pear-shaped body include A-line or X-line dresses, which balance out the upper body and are excellent for pear-shaped bodies. Tight or very long tops can make you appear bigger, so choose bright colors and prints. The main goal of dressing a pear figure is to draw attention to the torso and away from the hips and thighs.

A-line dresses are the classic choice for a pear body shape, as they showcase your defined waist and fit curvy hips with ease.

What style jeans are best for pear shape?

Bootcut jeans balance your silhouette. If you’re pear-shaped, you have a smaller upper body, fuller hips, and a larger butt. Bootcut or wide-legged jeans will flatter your figure. They skim your shape without hiding curves, and the sleek lines will elongate your legs. Want to be more adventurous? Try a pair of flares or a cropped bootcut style!

A high rise defines your waist. Bummed we didn’t mention skinnies? Pear shapes can rock skinny jeans! The rise is key. Look for high-rise skinnies, which show off your smallest waist. A higher rise can also prevent gapping at the waist and smooth out muffin tops. A high rise is a good choice for other denim cuts, but you can also choose a mid rise to lengthen your leg line. Dark washes flatter your form. Go for dark denim. Darker colors are always in style and easy to wear. If you like the distressed look, avoid whiskering across the hips. It makes the hips look wider.

Good: straight, bootcut, boyfriend, trouser, and flare pants. Any style of denim with a little give at the bottom is best for a pear shape. I like ankle-length skinny jeans or straight jeans. My favorite denim is LOFT curvy fit, but I’m always on the hunt for a great fitting pair. Good: Elongating shoes. Anything that makes these short legs look longer is good. A longer leg line will help take away the focus from your hips, even if you’re not short. That means any shoe that shows the foot. I like flats and pumps. I avoid mules that come up too high, shoes that cut at the ankle, and heavy or bulky shoes. Good: A-line dresses and skirts. A-line dresses and skirts are the most flattering on me. I love a good pencil skirt, but they often fit wrong.

What should a pear shaped body avoid?

Bright colors and shiny fabrics make your upper body look good, and ruffles on shirts, blouses, and tunics make your waist look bigger. But don’t wear them around your hips. Too short tops make you look small and round. Your neckline also draws attention to your upper body. A deep V-neck and waterfall neckline are great for a balanced look. Also, show off your shoulders for a great look. Fluffy sleeves, cut-outs on the shoulders, or wide necklines will make your shoulders stand out. • The only two things I would disagree on are mini-skirts and bodycon clothes. I really love to wear mini-skirts because they cover up the widest part of my thighs and show off the rest of my legs and bodycon dresses look amazing on any body type to me! (I have to say that I’m a pear shape but I’m rather tall though.)

  • I would LOVE to find a great pair of straight leg jeans, but I find they all cling to my upper thighs (5’2″; 130 lbs). Not tight around the thighs, just clingy enough that I frequently need to adjust them downward so the crotch doesn’t bunch up. Can you (or anyone else reading) recommend a few brands to try? Also, that red off-the-shoulder dress looks amazing on you!

  • Hi, Chi! I am 5’1″ and my body used to be pear-shaped. After kids, I don’t know if it still is a pear or has become more of a rectangle because my underbust and waistline have expanded, and hip dips just appeared. Though I’m still bottom-heavy, (with a lower belly pooch and thick thighs) my hips don’t curve smoothly down the sides due to the hip dips; I looked more “square” in that area. It also doesn’t help that I’m short-waisted and with a high rise. I want to wear high-rise bottoms to avoid the dreaded muffin top, but it just drowns most of my torso. Mid-rise bottoms give me the muffin top. Tucking my tops into high-waisted bottoms cuts me very short from the waist up. These just frustrates me as I’d usually have a hard time putting clothing pieces together to balance out my difficult proportions.

  • Can i just say this. Some of us women cant wear high waisted pants or skirts because it hurts. I have Endometriosis so i can not wear highwaist because they push more against my belly and also if you have ibs both of these two.decises makes you swollen and then highwaist not only hurts but it adds so much weight on you.because you will look pregnant. So what to do with this reality ? I truly would like to know i always struggle with this so i.dont buy clothes anymore 😔

  • Thank you for this! As a woman who has naturally been coke-bottle shaped with huge breasts, I went through a large big shift in identity after undergoing breast cancer treatment and having both breasts removed with an aesthetic flat closure— now, my body resembles the pear shape. So, it really helps to study your tutorial and have hope that I can feel confident in my ‘new skin’. ❤

  • Hi Angela, great advice. I went from a 16 to a size14. I now do intermediate fasting and stationery bike and weigh training, not saying this is for everyone, but for me. I really needed that advice. I am giving my boxie clothes away, just because l am 70 does not mean l don’t have a shape, Thanks again for the advice. You and Production be blessed.

  • Thank you so much for this article. I have been struggling with my style and this is the best article yet. I am 5’2″ and have been a skinny triangle all my life. No I realize why the 80’s big shoulder pads always looked good on me LOL. But being a skinny triangle I could pull off most fashions. I am now 62 and have put on weight. Because of medical conditions and meds my abdomen will swell from time to time so I now fluctuate between a triangle and pear. I’m trying to dress as a pear to make it easier but needed to educate myself so I am not wasting my time when I am shopping. I like that you put pictures of real women with real curves. I watched one article that showed tall skinny actresses that are pear and triangle and I just could not visual how that translates to me. Thank you so much

  • I am a petite apple. Can’t wait to see the apple one in this series. Usually apple articles only focus on plus sized as an apple, but I am 5’3 with a,short torso and wide rib cage and slender hips, so I never know what to wear. Belting my torso to create a waist doesn’t help because wearing a belt across my rib cage hurts lol

  • I was 298 pounds years ago. It was due to a bad marriage and birthing two boys. Currently I have lost big weight twice in my life. Today I am still dealing with pandemic weight. I don’t like having to stay home. You understand. I am so grateful. I am a size large at the top and a xl at the bottom. Before the pandemic I was size large up and down. I got all the way down to size12 jeans! My top stays at size large now. When I watch dressing with curves it’s always plus size. I am not that any more.

  • Hi Auntie A! So this was a phenomenal article! I really enjoyed seeing how you were able to pull together all of the different outfits. I have a question, what if I don’t know my shape body . Can you do a article on identifying that. I’ve gained weight and feel I am a mix of all body types! HEEELLLLLPPPPPP, PLEASE and Thank you!

  • Helloooo Lady.. You definitely described my shape. Boom Boom Boom. Chile I use to be a size 7/8. After having three Children 2 boys 1 girl I stayed a 7/8. Hunni I turned 40 years of age and I had my baby son. My size went up to a 14 Chile when I say I get all the attention it’s something else. It was honestly a struggle because I’ve been trying to go back to a 7/8. But I decided to eat healthy as possible exercise and enjoy my life /family and friends. Praising God and being thankful into him. I feel 💯 percent better. I love me and i’m sexy even at my age. He,He💕Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Keep the articles coming. 😍

  • Pants are a struggle. I really have come to hate pants.🥺😫 High waist and curvy is hard to find but is by far the best to me. So many pants are skinny so that is disappointing. So dresses, skirts it is. Wide leg pants make me feel like I look wider, maybe it’s just me. Any advice is appreciated, because they just don’t make outfits with pear’s in mind. I have come to accept that.

  • TIL what a tulip dress is. Not a style I would wear personally because I dont have nice legs. All my skirts or dresses are maxi length for this reason. Wrap dresses are the BEST for a true pear like me – shorter ones I’ll wear leggings or slim palazzo pants. Thank you for stressing wide leg trousers for pear shaped women!! I cringe every time I see a friend, loved one or even random women in the world SQUEEZING their far too large bodies into skinny jeans/pants. They are called SKINNY jeans for a reason – if you ain’t skinny, then DON’T wear them. They are NOT FOR YOU because they are NOT flattering. Enjoyed this article, will definitely check out more!
