Netflix’s new reality show, “Marriage or Mortgage,” follows couples in the Nashville area as they decide whether to get married or buy a house. The show follows couples with between $20,000 and $35,000 of their own money saved to spend on the show. The couples must choose between a fairy-tale nuptials or a dream home.
The show has stirred up conversation about hard economic realities, including the fact that many couples can’t afford to get married and buy houses. However, on the surface, the show is light and a great way to pass the time. The hosts, Sarah Miller and Nichole Holmes, are polar opposites, Miller starting her wedding planning career ten years ago, building on an already successful interior design career, while Holmes, who has a radio and television career, has a radio and television background.
The show also explores the emotional aspects of homebuying, as seen in Washington Post personal finance columnist Michelle Singletary. The show follows couples as they decide whether to spend their savings on a wedding or a dream home. The show highlights the challenges faced by couples in choosing between two of most people’s biggest milestones and financial constraints.
In the first episode, engaged couple Liz and Evan are torn about their future, and the show highlights the importance of considering the financial implications of both options.

Married or single, we’ve all heard it. “You could buy a house for the price of that wedding!” But have you ever stopped to think, …
Who owns the house husband or wife?
If the title or deed is in both spouses’ names, they both own the property. If both names are on the title, each owns half the property. This can get more complicated for personal property or accounts like pensions, retirement accounts, or credit cards. Unlike real property and cars, many personal property items don’t have a certificate of title. Pensions are often separately addressed in state and federal law.
Example: Property Titles in Common Law States. If George buys a car and puts it only in his name, he owns it. He owns the car and it isn’t considered marital property in a common law state. He owns the debt too.
Will there be a season 2 of Marriage or Mortgage?
Marriage or Mortgage was a hit on Netflix after its March release, but it hasn’t been renewed for a second season. The hosts hope for renewal. Miller said she wants the show to be renewed. She thinks the first season was perfect and showcased Nashville well. Holmes agreed and thinks the series could expand. She wants a second season to keep up with the diversity of Season 1 and maybe go beyond Nashville. Holmes also said, “Maybe more trampolines?”
Though the competition is tough, Holmes and Miller make the series feel real. Holmes and Miller aren’t former TV stars. They’re experts in their fields and can be hired outside of the show. With the help of the hosts, Netflix has created a relatable series that will make some viewers feel understood and inspire others to make real changes.

How does a Marriage or Mortgage show work?
The 10-episode series, which starts on March 10, follows couples in Nashville facing the same dilemma. Each episode focuses on one couple as realtor Nichole Holmes shows them homes that fit their budgets while wedding planner Sarah Miller takes them around the city to look at venues, try on wedding dresses and taste food for hypothetical receptions. It’s a lighthearted show—a Selling Sunset and Say Yes to the Dress crossover that will please those looking for a fun reality TV show. But the show doesn’t talk about the bigger economic issues that make this decision hard for many people. This show doesn’t delve deeply into the economics of marriage and home ownership. But it makes viewers wonder about why these milestones feel out of reach for many Americans. Holmes tries to persuade couples to buy a home, while Miller tries to convince them that a wedding is an investment in their future. We don’t know how the couples were chosen for the show. One thing is clear: they can’t afford a wedding and a down payment on a home. But they have enough money to choose between a detached garage and signature moonshine cocktails. Many viewers may be familiar with this position, especially millennials like the couples in the show. It is still a privileged position, though, as many across the country struggle to pay rent, especially since the pandemic began. People are calling the show depressing. It’s not new that Americans can’t afford a wedding and a home. It shows how the economy affects people’s choices. TIME spoke to experts in personal finance and housing finance to understand the show’s central decision and what it says about the myth of the American dream.

📹 Reviewing Netflix Show: Marriage VS. Mortgage – Would you spend your $$ on a Wedding or Mortgage? 🎥
Clearly, I love doing loans! Need a mortgage or want to chat about your scenario? I am licensed in 46 states for purchase and …
Easy solution. Buy the house and have the wedding in the backyard. Every single person I know that have spent that kind of money on a wedding had wished that the had a modest wedding and put the money as a down payment to the house. Wedding cost all money. The one having the wedding the one attending the wedding. It is not a celebration with your friends it is a burden to them.
Lmfao I was interested in this because I do get those girly butterflies over pretty weddings and also love to see the potential of beautiful homes wellllllll the first episode they choose a 30,000 wedding and then covid hit and im like wtf should got a house you could’ve quarantined in… lame 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I about died at the wedding they actually had 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am embarrassed that I’m taking the time to even comment on this ridiculous show, but it appeared in my Netflix feed and jumped to episode 5, Out of the Friendzone, for some reason. I have never viewed a show with such spoiled, out-of-touch 20-somethings in all my life. Their snobby, entitled attitudes were difficult to watch and both work as ‘fitness trainers’ and are able to look at homes in the range of just under half a million dollars b/c their parents are ‘helping out.’ Additionally, they indicated they wanted around 200 people at their wedding and the Donut Wall with 100 donuts is $1600 so are they seriously planning to spend $3200 so each of their wedding guests can have one donut??? I stopped perusal at that point! This has to be fake.
These people need to learn that big blown out super expensive weddings are overrated privileged garbage! Make your wedding day a grounded experience with friends and family and keep costs low. It can be done! Budget weddings are just as meaningful and intimate as big pricey ones . North Americans are really clueless sometimes 🙄
ofc 100% mortgage over marriage. I mean, you know relationship failures sometimes and if that happens, the only opt you get is you have to move on and carry on with your own life. and if I chose marriage than mortgage, I would end up being broke while thinking bout bittersweet memory (and those cash I spent for caterings yeah) for the moment I had that darn wedding, and that would probably not seems like a nice idea. but if I chose mortgage, I would break up with my partner, having a big, expensive house. I would be single but at least I’m crying in my fancy property lolllll
I love you Netflix but this one looks terrible. You can have a nice wedding without breaking the bank if you are willing to make some compromises. Choosing between one day or a home of your own where you can start a family, raise kids and make a life for yourself? In California the young people such as myself can only dream of owning a home someday. The reality is that is not going to happen unless you can move out of state or you make a hell of a lot of money. I have a good job and I still cannot afford to buy here.
We had the simplest $10,000 wedding for 80 people… so we could have a nice house & honeymoon… we wanted it to be cheaper but things really ADD UP for a wedding! 😭 (Granted, we splurged and hired a articlegrapher too and paid for a hotel for immediate family.) We got maybe half of the money back in gifts so the wedding basically cost $5k. Loved having all of our family together though… Don’t regret our simple wedding, but part of me wishes it was even simpler 😂😂😂
beautiful bride + nice house + obedient children + safe job == a man’s dream ( manipulated by society ) Are these things really necessary to make a person happy in real life (life is short anyway, you live highest a 100 yrs) different person have different goals, pov, things that make them happy but modern tv shows makes us think that if you don’t have above mentioned things, you are not happy in life
OMG this is so irresponsible, Seriously wedding or mortgage? The couple that the brides parents are giving 30k for wedding or mortgage with 6% down CAN’T afford to buy a house! Just get a simple wedding and save up and buy the house yourselves. I see so many red flags in this relationship and see so much inmmaturity. I founded and ran a mortgage bank for over 20 years. I prequalified thousands of people. I know the psychology of human behavior and this is a disaster that will end in foreclosure. And this show is glorifying and exploiting these couples and their emotions. Not cool, Not right. There is no reason you have to get married and buy a place at the same time. Just get married in an affordable way. Then start your lives and have the goal to buy your first place a couple years down the line. THEN you can look into buying a home.
Guess no one can think of anything new or interesting to produce so more mindless drivel is heaped onto the airways. At least some of the other reality shows make some sort of sense. But this one makes no sense whatsoever as even a toddler could figure this one out. Maybe this show is for those who like to watch couples argue…
I’m team house. Spoiler alert: I think only three couples bought a house. I was so upset at the couples wanting a wedding. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, several of the couples had to reduce their plans to small receptions. Something they could have done at their own house. Too many people are concerned with a wedding day. I prefer to think of the longevity of the marriage and ensure we have a home to live in and grow. My husband and I preferred to purchase our house. Our wedding consisted of us, the minister, and our two witnesses, then we went to Denny’s. I spent $150 on my wedding. We were able to sell the house and purchase another one 7 years later. Team house all the way.
Sahar’s assistant, Hussein, that has been going to showings with us was just telling us about this show! Lol We’ll have to check it out. So thankful we live in Texas where things are less expensive and we had a beautiful wedding that wasn’t anywhere close to 30K and thankfully still have savings for the house too! 😁 ❤️
Stumble upon your website and quickly subbed. My girlfriend & I watch that show as well & we we’re triggered too. I definitely I want to marry my girlfriend and was thinking was a modest budget for a small wedding, under $10K right. I also just filled for chapter 7 and I have a 4 year waiting period to buy a house 🥲
