You can also use unmarked boxes from the post office to hide what’s inside. These are smart because you also get fast shipping without anyone noticing. Some companies also ship through partners or other names to hide what’s inside. You can do this with a 3PL and list the sender as that 3PL or something like “Knoxville Distribution Center.” Use their address instead of yours. This makes it easier for customers if there is an issue. It’s also harder to find out which store sent it.

  • I received a package by special delivery, instead of regular mail, with my name spelled wrong, no house number, just a street, and an Idaho zip code instead of my state’s. I was amazed that I even received it, and have been a little in love with the USPS since then. Great article! I loved learning a bit of what goes into mail like that 🙂

  • Many years ago, an estranged girlfriend, in an attempt to reconcile, sent me a letter with “Guess who?” written in the return address area. She had postage on the envelope, but it contained a rather long letter, so being over weight, it arrived with postage due. However, the Postal Service had opened the envelope to determine a return address (and undoubtedly read the rather private letter inside), then placed it inside another envelope before sending it to me. Obviously, we were both a tad embarrassed.

  • Several years ago I received a letter from my mother, in a plastic bag. Inside was a very nice note from the Post Office that said that the letter had been accidentally sort of chewed up by one of their automated machines. The post office obviously went to a lot of trouble to piece the envelope and the letter it contained. They were able to determine my address and sent it on to me. Bravo for the post office. They really worked hard to recovers from the oops and get the letter to me. I feel the post office does not get the respect it should receive. Just to,add, I have no connection whatsoever with the post office other than as a user of their services.

  • I was a postie (mailman) with Royal Mail in the UK until a few years ago. We had a national centre for undelivered mail with no return address. The staff there are authorised (the only mail staff in the UK permitted to do this) to open each item to find the address of the sender, and the item is then returned to the sender from that office. As far as I’m aware, no mail item is sold or auctioned if it can’t be returned or delivered.

  • One thing that’s interesting is the simple USPS mailbox. I grew up in rural Virginia and everyone had the same mailbox, you know the one, and never thought about it. Years later I moved to Eastern Europe for a decade and brought my girlfriend back for a visit and she was amazed we had mailboxes, outside, unlocked, out in the open. “Won’t someone steal the mail?” And it’s odd, every mailbox in Europe is locked up! I said no, we don’t do that.

  • I’m going through this currently. Once you file a claim you’ll be waiting at least 15-30 days to find out anything. And don’t bother attempting to find out why a package you sent with address information went there. Specific reasons as to why a package/letter was sent to Recovery or returned to sender are not documented. One of their processing machines could have damaged the label. But you’ll never know that because it’s not documented. Your best bet to find out the ‘why’ is to deal directly with the branch itself if possible, but that’s no guarantee. Don’t try to contact the Recovery center, they don’t have a publicly available phone number. And no matter what, don’t call ASK USPS. They don’t know any more than what you looked up online. The automated phone system will make you angry, then you’ll be on hold for at least 15-20 minutes, then they won’t be able to tell you anything and will advise you contact the branch or sender/addressee.

  • I sort of knew some of this. I worked briefly in a used book store. The owner would buy large lots of lost books that were auctioned by the postal service because they were somehow not delivered (or deliverable). We would then divvy up a bunch of the books and then go through a process of listing them on Amazon for resale. Every now and then I came across a book that appeared to have had some personalization inside, once it was a Bible with an actual name imprinted on it. A few were obviously resold by a different online retailer through Amazon because it would have a very similar sticker over the barcode that we used for our Amazon stuff. It makes me wonder how thoroughly they actually are with finding the rightful owner.

  • I love our US Post Office! They’re ultra reliable, the cheapest shipping option in almost every personal and professional situation I’ve experienced, they seem to do a great job hiring friendly quality carriers everywhere I’ve ever lived, and I get an emotional heartstring tug every spring when the little blue donation bag shows up in my mailbox for their yearly Stamp Out Hunger food drive. And now I learn this fun little nugget of extra-behind-the-scenes-awesomeness to top it off. <3 And Backblaze too! I've used them for years and they've saved me heartache a couple different times. I have multiple computers and about 14TB of data (as a many-year photographer and file hoarder with a full frame camera and a habit of taking many different exposures of every shot), and just like with the USPS, I'm frankly kinda surprised at the quality/reliability of service they've shown for such a relatively small price. Sidenote, given that you were the one reaching out to them for sponsorship because you love and use their product, I felt like your advertisement was well done and perfectly reasonable for the end of a article. Perhaps a bit longer and more emphatic than most, but I'd be the same way if I was sharing something that I personally used and believed in like that too. Thanks for helping us all to become slightly more informed humans every day. 🙂

  • General Rule: First-Class Mail (regardless of if stamped, metered, or permit, and presorted or not) will be forwarded or returned. First-Class Mail is generally legally required when sending information pertaining to an account (e.g. statement, invoice, collection notice). Standard Mail (also regardless of if stamped, metered, or permit) does not get forwarded or returned. Use Case: Unsure if it’s your credit card statement, cable bill, or account change notice … or if it’s just junk disguised as legitimate documents from your cable provider, credit card company, or bank? If the stamp or postage mark indicates it’s Standard Mail, then it’s an advertisement or offer, not legitimate information about your account. If it’s First-Class Mail, you may want to open it.

  • The U. S. Postal Service has always been on the cutting edge of delivery service. I have always been impressed with their service. If I remember correctly, at least at one point, the USPS allowed people in general to answer letters addressed to Santa Claus. I do not know what their policy is now. Perhaps there are fewer these days due to things like NORAD’s Santa Tracker. Still it would be interesting to know what is done with letters to Santa these days.

  • This article covers what is SUPPOSED to happen not what actually happens in many cases. Several members of my family worked for the post office at different times. My father was a letter carrier for 16 years, his father was a post master for 12 years and my uncle was a union official for the letter carrier union for about 30 years. In the 1930’s and 1940’s when my grandfather was a post master all the dead letters and packages went into a storage room. There were two sections. “This year’s” and “last year’s”. At the end of the year they disposed of “last years” and put “this years” into the “last year’s” section and the dead mail from the next year would become the new “this year’s” dead letters. So to dispose of the old dead mail they would open up every single one. If there was any clue to where it was supposed to go or where it came from he would try to see to it that it was delivered. Otherwise he would cut out all the stamps and give them to his son, my uncle for his stamp collection. All money found would be divided among all the workers at that post office (it was the depression and people needed money). Anything of value or use that might be in the packages he distributed to the postal workers. All family photos and all personal letters would go into a big bin and sit for 7 years. There was a sign in the lobby informing postal patrons that if they were missing mail they could claim it at the dead letter office in the back of that post office. But after 7 years they just sent everything to the dump.

  • On a postal-related note, I would like to know how countries are paid for mail sent from other countries. E.g. I send a letter to an overseas friend. The post office in my home country collects their fee through the stamp. How does the recipient post office get paid to deliver the card to my friend? Does the receiving country get a cut? Does everyone assume that the back-and-forth sending cancels each other out? (I would argue ‘no’ as, for example, my immediate family has often sent packages to overseas extended family of treats they cannot get there. In response they send thank notes and cards – an unfair imbalance for the receiving post office where my extended family lives). Please make a article on how this works.

  • I’ve been with the Postal Service for 12 years and we still refer to it as the Dead Letter Office. I’ll have to check my placards and see if they’ve been changed to Mail Recovery Office but I don’t think they have. I only send something to them about once a week. Usually it’s letters with bad addresses and no return address or loose items found in BMCs and wire cages that we can’t establish which parcel it fell out of. I usually hold loose items a few days just in case someone calls in stating they are missing something and it matches what we have.

  • Elaborating on this article, is there any chance you can explain how some postal services manage to post letters that have crazy addresses correctly? Example: The Ginger Lad, That place with the cows and grass, Ireland No word of a lie, letters like these manage to reach the right recipients in Ireland.

  • I also once mailed a 20lb package of souvenirs from overseas. It got into the us but disappeared. Every time i called, they said wait. Then it got past the date to file insurance claims. Then the tracking disappeared. I filed a lost package claim with meticulous detail of what was in it and they claimed they couldn’t find it. After awhile, i just don’t have the time anymore to be given a run around. I really should sue because that was several hundred dollars worth of stuff

  • I clicked Like for this article for only two reasons,1) the topic, and 2), it`s hilarious piece. You believe that all postal workers are honest and you have to be kidding. Such perfection doesn’t exist. I definitely haven’t received real, so full, honesty from govt at any level; some occasions, yes, but definitely not all. And it goes as such at any level. Where I reside in southern Quebec, Canada, ” watch your back, Jack “. I wouldn’t recommend that people “blindly” believe that all postal workers are wholly honest, as I wouldn’t do it about many other public service workers; plus other people. This isn’t a perfectly clean world, no way.

  • In Canada it sits in a big bin with hundreds of other letters besides dozens of other bins, forever, I didnt see any packages in these bins, just letters. Packages must be sold off or something. I did some work in the distribution center and it is incredibly dreary place and everyone hates each other and they don’t give 2 shits about your packages. Ive seen them throwing them over 15 feet.

  • You NEVER answered the most important/elementary question: How long does the Post office’s mail recovery center take to first attempt to contact the mail’s sender (assuming there is a valid address inside the letter), once they open the letter that has no return address on the outside??? (also, does the person wanting to retrieve the letter required to file a claim, & HOW??)!

  • Other people who can open mail addressed to another person without it being a federal crime. Person with power of attorney Person hired by a person to perform duties during which it would be reasonable to open mail. Police with a warrant or with exigency. Executor of a persons estate. Next of kin of addressee upon adressees death. Legal guardian or Parent of a minor child who is the addressee with or without a C/O in the address line. Quite a few people actually.

  • What do they do with all the letters to Santa. I’m sure they get them its gotta be where those end up… Its just a shame that all those kids that manage to put there letters in a real mailbox which I’m sure happens sometimes never get read…but dot they just get shredded or recycled or both or something…

  • their collection center is a joke. I once sent a playstation 1 game, Granted it was only worth $20. Never had an issue before label was taped on well etc etc. never showed up at it’s destination called 3-4 times to the post office until they finally gave me the number to the atlanta center, called them they were very rude and angry that I got this secret number and told me they threw it away a day after they received it. Very dissapointed. I get that they can’t hold everything but I called within 2-3 weeks of it shipping out and they kept it for one day…. really, USPS is shit

  • I uh, I actually open letters I get for a woman who used to live at my address. I used to be in a different apartment so we were neighbors. I do it to see if it’s important enough to bother calling her about it, but it’s usually just junk. She knows I do this and appreciates it. Does this still count as a crime?

  • The way you speak during the content version of your articles sounds beautifully professional while simultaneously scratching that itch for a uniquely British voice. However, the way you speak in your advertisement portion can only be mimicked by a frumpy man begging for the night to go on from a woman who is far out of his league. I wouldn’t normally say this, it’s a bit impolite, but I listen to your articles while I put on makeup and the add portions cause me to start vomiting while desperately plunging for the next button. As you may imagine, this makes putting makeup on extremely difficult for me. Would you try speaking the same way you do in the content portion that you do in the add portion?
