Thank you. This needs more attention. When i was 14 i was engaged. If my father hadnt been arrested for other things he would have signed for me to be married at 16. I am in america. My wedding date would have been in may of 2006 a month after my 16th birthday. I am 34 and thankfully escaped being forced to be married before i could legally rent a car or drink beer. And yes you read that correctly.
All 50 states have laws that say a person must be at least 18 to consent to marry. However, 38 states have legal exceptions that still allow children to marry in certain circumstances. These legal exceptions often require the consent of one or both parents and/or a judge. If you are going to report, don’t tell half a truth. Tell the entire truth. You are taking things out of context and it is not true reporting.
This is a complex problem. Religious groups here are what keeps this going, and its not as common as this reporter makes it sound. Usa is a huge place with every sort of diversity you can think of. Also our structure is state/ federal..so states may want one thing eventhogh the president feels differently. But yes this isnt talked about enough. Its really due to religious fundamentals which is a problem in every country.
I am American and my parents tried to marry me off at 12 years old not even a teenager. I was not even out of middle school. I was not pregnant. I did not seek a boy. I was raped by a man who confessed and went to jail for his crime. I had to have an abortion because of this rape. The state court order the abortion or I would die the judge said. This is why my parents deemed me marriageable. I was “dirty” and “spoiled” now. My mother said that I should pray a man would want to marry me in my condition. That she would be looking to find a nice young man as soon as possible. All of the men they selected were over the age of 18. The youngest was 19 years old. The eldest was 32 years old. All of them called the state to report the fact my parents were trying to marry me off. None thought it was right. The state did not do much except to tell my parents this is not right, but eventually I was placed in foster care. If I had been in the same state in my country that my cousin was in, by the time I was in foster care I would have bene legally married to who ever my parents chose. My cousin was married off at just 14 years old before she could enter secondary school. She got pregnant and her parents demanded they marry. Several other friends were married by 16 years old. IN ALL CASES IT WAS THE PARENTS PUSHING IT. This was due to religious beliefs.
Heh, majority of the world know about US only through Hollywood, but for those who know the actual situation of the society of US, an information like this, even for the first time is no surprise. First of this is an old news! Secondly we have a lot more problem to keep us busy rather than looking into our neighbors back yard. At least the ones mentioned above are with consent.
