Is Dowry Necessary For Marriage?

Dowry is a crucial condition for the validity of a marriage contract, and it must be paid either at the beginning or within the marriage. The man must pay the dowry to the woman, and it is up to them to agree on the time of the payment. A dowry sometimes serves to help a new husband discharge the responsibilities that go with marriage. In contemporary American marriages, the concept of dowry has taken on a more personalized and nuanced meaning.

A dowry is a property that a woman brings to her husband at the time of marriage. It originated in the giving of a dowry, which is the sole responsibility of the husband. Dowry becomes binding by the contracting of nikah itself. Every person is unique, and the husband and wife should communicate and discuss their personal issues.

A dowry is a broad definition of property or valuable security that is presented to the other party in a marriage, either directly or indirectly. It includes assets—cash, merchandise, or otherwise—given prior to, during, or following marriage, typically at the bride’s family’s home.

In some parts of the world, mainly in parts of Asia, dowries continue to be expected and demanded as a condition to accept a marriage proposal. The original purpose of a dowry was to compensate the bride’s family for the loss of her labor and reproductive potential. Dowry can serve as a gift to in-laws or insurance for the bride if she chooses to leave her husband.

How important is dowry?

Dowry: Money or goods given to a bride by her family. In the Roman Empire, the bride’s family gave money to the groom or his family to help pay for the bride’s living expenses. In some cultures, the groom gives a gift to the bride or her family on marriage. In others, the bride gives a gift to the groom or his family. The dowry can be a gift to the in-laws or insurance for the bride. It’s something she can keep if she gets divorced. Other terms for this are “bride price” or “bridewealth.” Over time, some families used the dowry system to exploit others. What was meant to be a gift and promise of security soon became a demand that resulted in broken engagements, divorce, violence, and even death. These countries made dowries illegal. Today, the dowry is more informal and casual across most cultures, especially in Africa and South Asia. It’s a way to honor a couple’s culture.

Why did brides have to pay a dowry?

A dowry is money or property given by the bride’s family to the groom’s family at the time of marriage. It is an ancient custom that is still practiced in many countries and communities around the world. Originally, brides received dowries, not grooms. The original purpose of a dowry was to compensate the bride’s family for her loss of labor and reproductive potential. Somewhere before the start of the Roman period, the custom changed so that the bride’s family had to give a dowry to the groom’s family. A bride’s dowry often included clothing made by her or her family. Every item of clothing, from buttons to aprons, was a testament to the bride’s skill in sewing, weaving, embroidery, etc. Clothing, bedding, rugs, and wall decorations were also important for a newlywed couple to furnish their home. The custom of giving dowries has lasted for centuries. All women in a family group made their dowry starting from when a girl was born. Girls learned to weave, stitch, and embroider, so they could start making their dowry in their teens. Women used their hand-made items to express themselves in the fabrics that would furnish their future home. This was like magic, with the weaver’s soul in their dowries, made with their chosen materials, illustrations, and patterns.

  • From Economic concept, It’s basic supply and demand dynamic. Well settled men are preferred all the time no matter what. Parents never wise that their daughter get married to a guy in lower social economic status then they themselves are in, no matter how good that guy is nature and character wise. When the demand of a product(well settled groom) is high and supply(brides) is not enough, cost of product(well settled men) increases. That’s why bride’s parents are ready to pay dowry as a leverage to groom for match as their is marriage market has higher demand for well settled guys. No parent needs to dowry, if they marry of their daughter to lower economicial status groom. It’s there wise to do so. Say all that it’s unfair to demand dowry after marriage, one can ask for help but not dowry.
