In Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Emily, the titular deuteragonist, is a beautiful and charismatic young zombie woman with a passion for music and dance. She is voiced by Helena Bonham Carter and also voices Lady Tottington. The movie’s inspiration is to make Emily a figure of sympathy, not horror. Emily lost her own chance at happiness when she was murdered on the eve of her marriage.
The film is whimsically macabre, visually imaginative, and emotionally bittersweet. Victor (Johnny Depp) and Victoria’s (Emily Watson) families have a strange but sweet almost love-affair. Emily thinks it’s marriage, but she falls into the revenant zombie category.
The plot involves the premeditated murder of Emily, the titular corpse bride, at the hand of her evil fiancé, Lord Barkis Bittern (Richard E. Grant). He intends to kill again. With two brides both pining for him, Victor must decide between his love-at-first-sight fiancé Victoria or his tragic corpse bride Emily.
The Corpse Bride original story is inspired by an Ashkenazi ghost story with tragic connections to real-world events. The dark fantasy film is based on a story of a living person accidentally marrying the specter of a murdered bride-to-be. Emily is a reanimated corpse who was a talented and wealthy lady in her lifetime and the self-proclaimed bride of the young Victor Van Dort.
Emily’s age is never confirmed, but it is believed that she died around 10 years prior to the film, with her corpse possibly being more preserved by the cold. Similar actors include Elsa (Frozen), Jack Skellington, and Sally Finkelstein.
