The Respect for Marriage Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden, ensures that marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples will remain the law of the land. However, the future of marriage equality is uncertain after Republican Ron Johnson pulls support for the landmark bill. The Supreme Court overturned the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, with Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurring opinion naming several other cases he has considered.
The Australian Human Rights Commission believes that civil marriage should be available without discrimination to all couples, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The House gave final approval to legislation to mandate federal recognition for same-sex marriages, with a bipartisan vote. The court’s decision demeans the nation’s aspirations to equality and inclusion and diminishes us all.
Marriage equality remains and will most likely continue to be the law of the land, but estate planning and adoption remain. Some LGBTQ leaders fear the Supreme Court could weaken or overturn the constitutional right to gay marriage as soon as next year. The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling peeling back LGBTQ protections is fueling concerns on marriage for same-sex couples.
Same-sex couples are happy that Congress is moving quickly to ensure nationwide recognition of gay marriage. The positive health impacts of marriage equality for same-sex couples are clear, as are the potential negative health effects of marriage denial and a plebiscite.
