Should I Let The Groom Choose Whatbto Wear?

Groomsmen should not wear the same suit as the groom, but it is important for everyone to look cohesive and adhere to a dress code. Coordination is key, and if you want your groomsmen to wear the same suit but choose their own ties or socks, ask them to do so.

When choosing between suit or tuxedo, consider the wedding theme, venue, time of the ceremony, and personal preference. Avoid contrast by going for one shade and choosing a monochromatic look. The groom’s attire should match the vibe of the wedding location, theme, and the to-be-wed couple. A tuxedo is a classic, elegant look for groomsmen, and they can wear beige, lilac, grey, black, white, baby blue, powder blue, navy blue, deep wine, emerald, or beige.

The mother of the bride and groom should be able to select their own dresses to consider how each one will look on the body type. Neckties draw attention to the midpoint of the body, while bow ties emphasize facial features. Wear a dress in a color, style, and length that goes with the mother’s dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses, and avoid white, off-white, or similar colors.

For a black-tie wedding, opt for a formal evening gown in a sophisticated color like black, navy, or deep jewel tones, floor-length dresses, elegant accessories, and statement jewelry. If the wedding is semi-formal, choose a cocktail dress or dressy suit.

Choosing attire that compliments the bride and does not try to outdo her is crucial for a successful wedding.

When should a bride pick her dress?

Make your bridal dress appointments 9-12 months before your wedding. This date is to choose and order a dress 8-9 months before the wedding. You have time to shop around and find the perfect dress. It also means you won’t have to pay extra and gives designers time to make your dress. Each gown is made to order, so it will take longer. Finally, this timeline allows for alterations after the dress is made. The dress will be made to fit you, but it might need to be altered. This is something brides should plan for. Don’t start dress shopping before 12 months out. Starting your wedding dress hunt too early can lead to regret. Brides who start before the 12-month mark often compare their dress to newer designs. The farther out your wedding, the less you know. Choose your dress based on your wedding theme and location.

What happens if the groom sees the brides dress?

It was bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding. It’s just an old wives’ tale.

Should the groom change the clothes?

You and your partner can choose different outfits for the ceremony and reception. It’s about personal style, tradition, comfort, and the atmosphere you want on your special day. When planning a wedding, brides’ attire gets a lot of attention, but grooms’ outfits are also important. Traditionally, grooms wore a single suit or tuxedo for the wedding ceremony and reception. However, more and more grooms are choosing different outfits for the ceremony and reception. This raises a question: Do you need a different outfit for the ceremony and reception? You can choose to wear different outfits for the ceremony and reception if you want. There are several things to think about when deciding.

Grooms have traditionally worn the same attire throughout the wedding day. This shows consistency and unity. Today’s weddings are often more personal and reflect the couple’s personalities. If you want to show different sides of your style, separate outfits could be a good choice.

Who is supposed to help the bride get dressed?

Bridesmaids. Once the bride knows who she wants to help her get ready, she should tell them to be ready 10-20 minutes before she puts on her dress. This includes hair, makeup, and wedding attire. We want everyone to look their best as they help the bride get ready for the camera! If you have two spaces and only a few people will be helping the bride get dressed, the rest of the group can start getting ready as soon as the bride starts getting dressed. If everything is happening in one room, everyone should be ready 5-10 minutes before the bride steps into her dress.

Groomsmen. About 10-15 minutes before I arrive, I ask the groomsmen to be ready in their wedding attire. I want the groomsmen ready before the groom so they look polished as they help the groom put on his wedding attire. We also take a few group photos at this time. Having everyone ready makes this easy!

Does the groom kiss the bride?

The kiss. Next is the most exciting part of the ceremony. The officiant will say, “Kiss the bride.” Some grooms will kiss their brides and lift them off their feet. No matter what, it will be a magical moment and a must-have wedding photo.

Unity Ceremony. Some couples have a unity ceremony after the first kiss. Some unity ceremony ideas include mixing two colors of sand or water or candle lighting.

Closing Remarks. The officiant will say a few words to end the ceremony. For a religious ceremony, the officiant will bless the couple and their marriage.

Who helps a bride pick out a dress?

Maid of Honor – Your number one gal should help you pick your gown. She knows your style best, so her opinion would be helpful. Parents or Close Family – Your mom probably has been dreaming of your wedding for a while. She’s an obvious choice to go wedding dress shopping with you. Or maybe your aunt, who has been important in your life. Invite your mom’s other half to make her feel included. If you have a sister, she would be perfect to help you pick out your wedding dress! Bridesmaids are the next choice for who to bring to your appointment. Your bridesmaids can make things difficult. You have so many different opinions. Make a fun appointment with all your girls when your wedding dress arrives. Reveal it to them! This way, you’ll have fewer opinions when picking out your gown, and everyone will feel included. It’s okay to shop alone. Shopping for your wedding dress is different from shopping for a new outfit. Do what’s easiest for you. Some brides feel guilty about not sharing the experience with friends or family. But you don’t need to! They’ll understand. This is for you. If anyone is bummed they didn’t go shopping with you, you can invite them to your gown pick-up or fitting! Choose someone supportive, not overly opinionated. It’s good to have honest opinions, but in the end, what matters is what you think and like. This is meant to be fun, so choose who to bring with you accordingly.

Should the groom wear a different suit than groomsmen?

Mismatched groom and groomsmen attire. If you don’t want to match, that’s fine. The groom and groomsmen don’t have to dress the same. Everyone should look the same and follow the dress code. A groomsman in linen pants looks odd next to a groomsman in a black tuxedo. The groom should set the tone and let everyone know what to wear. If you want all groomsmen to wear a navy suit, say so. It’s one thing to say everyone wears a blue suit, but you also need to say what kind of dress shirts, ties, and shoes they should wear. If the wedding is casual, the groomsmen should wear nice slacks and a dress shirt. Use terms like “business casual” and “semi-formal dress” to explain what you want the wedding party to wear. Show them photos and ideas. It’s a good idea to see all the groomsmen’s outfits before the wedding to make sure they look good with what the groom is wearing and are within the dress code. This helps avoid last-minute fashion problems. If the groom and groomsmen’s attire don’t match, use accessories to tie them together. Matching socks, ties, or boutonnieres let the groom and groomsmen stand out from one another while complementing each other’s looks.

Who decides what the groom wears?

Most grooms will choose their own outfits. The ushers and groom’s father can choose their own designs unless they’re matching. You can choose from many high-street and department store wedding outfits for the groomsmen at reasonable prices. If you’re a groom-to-be, follow these tips to choose the right outfit.

  • So he’s waving all kinds of red flags in your face by being opinionated and controlling. Then he sends his mother to do his bidding. The bride denies the family the wedding tradition to keep the drama away from her event, and her mother is heartbroken about it. What’s wrong with this picture. She likely chose to elope to stop the drama between the two families. When Lori said, “mom, is this breaking your heart,” the camera panned to the daughter’s face, and she did not look happy. I think she had it out with her mother about the eloping thing. This is not a way to start your married life.

  • The poor bride’s mum spent a lot of time pursing her lips and looking away every time one of the groom’s ‘rules’ was mentioned. I feels she’s not happy but is trying to avoid a row because she knows she might not see her daughter again. Even the bride had a sad little moment when the future mother-in-law said “he’d like something a little more form-fitting” but then she said she didn’t like the dress. I think she was covering up how she really felt. I’ve got a bad feeling about this marriage, at least for the girl anyway.

  • My husband can be very opinionated but when I asked him if he had any preference on what kind of wedding dress I should get, his answer was “it’s your choice and whatever you choose you will look beautiful in”… that’s the difference between having an opinion and being controlling! A supportive and respectful MIL would be having stern conversation with HER son!

  • So basically this bride is not allowed to have her own opinion! It starts with the wedding dress but won’t end there… He will be even more controlling once she said ‘I DO’. And the mother knows her daughter is so much involved with him that if she would say anything her soon-to-be-in-law will ensure she won’t see her daughter anymore. So sad.

  • She will spend the rest of her life living up to what he wants. This sort of controlling behaviour is a red flag to me personally! And what bothers me mkre is the groom’s mother sitting there and being the spokesperson for her son when really it should be her telling her son that it is what the bride wants to wear that she should wear and he should learn to respect his wife and her choices

  • “He’s worked in men’s clothing stores-” honey, that’s different from the ladies’ bridal shops for DRESSES 🤦🏼‍♀️ if you want to elope by all means do it, I’m just worried about how bossy he is and how she just accepts it, even changing her mind on stuff she likes the minute the idea of him not liking it comes up.. (anyone ever get an update on this couple, because I know this show is pretty old?)

  • She loves every dress but soon after listening her mil she completely change her decision upside down. When you see that her opinion doesn’t matter at all, it’s very clear that the groom has decided not to invite anyone for the wedding. Shame that she can’t stand for herself and decided to be a doormat for both son and his mom. Good luck girl.

  • Made me sad for her and for her mom… too many red flags here. The dress is not about the groom and if he is that intense on what she chooses for her dress, just imagine what’s going to happen with daily life and REAL concerns like parenting styles et cetera… Would love to see the follow up on this in 5 years

  • If a man cares that much about the details of the wedding dress I’d be worried he’s either controlling or gay. Either way, it’s a red flag. My ex was super controlling and abusive and he had a lot of opinions about what I would be wearing if we got married. My current boyfriend would marry me in a potato sack and would barely notice the difference.

  • I’ve been the bride who wanted to buy the dress that would make the groom happy, and I ended up years later looking at my wedding photos feeling unhappy with a lot of things on my wedding day. It also set a precedence for the whole marriage. I wish I had also not forgotten my own happiness, too. Sometimes, lessons are learned the hard way. I try to pass on that wisdom when I get the chance so other brides don’t make the same mistake.

  • Sounds like her fiancé and his family are very controlling. Comes across like she is not going to be allowed to make her own decisions. This is going to be a very difficult and sad relationship. 😢 She said she only wants to make him happy. She is now going to lose herself in this relationship forever neglecting herself. If he loved her he would have said sweetheart, whatever you choose you will be beautiful in it. I am marrying you not the dress.

  • This is such a toxic relationship he’s not even there but she can still “hear him in her ear”. Smh as someone whose been in an emotional/psychological/ and kinda physical abusive relationship these are all HUGE red flags 😳 my guess is she’s eloping because it was because he didn’t want anyone there to talk her out of it. A marriage is about starting a family. How do you do that if you don’t even include your family that you both already have. You could elope and have a small party kind of reception after with the family and maybe a few close friends or you could elope and include your intermediate family. I’ve had friends elope at the courthouse and both the bride and grooms parents were still there. I’m just so annoyed at this episode 😒.

  • Oh my god, what a nightmare. That mother completely backed the controlling son. Seriously, why should he get to decide what she wears? It’s HER dress. And the comment about him having “good fashion sense?” He worked in men’s clothing, not women’s! She should have walked away. I mean, she immediately changed her mind as soon as the mother said the fiancé wouldn’t like it. So awful.

  • This bride seems to be quite satisfied to twist the knife in her mother’s heart. She’s already being isolated from her family. I fear this is the sign of an abuser. The control he is exerting through his mother is chilling too. His mother seems quite anxious to exact every preference too. She has memorized them all. Somehow I don’t think they will manage to choose exactly the right dress. Trouble coming.

  • Now that I’m a mother, I couldn’t imagine not being at either of my children’s wedding. I get that couple should do what they want, but to not have ANY family there almost defeats reason behind having a ceremony. It just doesn’t bode well that they want to isolate themselves from their loved ones on such an important day and that he has so many rules for what he would like to see her in.

  • I’d never let my groom be in control or give me rules about what I’d be wearing on my wedding day. That’s a huge red flag to me. My husband didn’t care what I wore as long as I showed up. Lol. Secondly, I’m heartbroken for her mother that she cannot attend the wedding. I get the couple wants it to be about them and it is their day, afterall. Maybe they’ll have a party after they tie the knot so everyone can celebrate.

  • Talking from experience it’s incredible hurtful not having your mother to the wedding. It still hurts to this day and I can’t get over missing my only daughters wedding, the only chance to be mother of the bride, to sit there and watch her get married and enjoy seeing all the attention on her. Writing this has made me cry yet again 😢😢

  • This episode is from a few years ago.. I’d love to hear an update with her and her husband… I understand the idea of not wanting a overly complicated wedding, but to elope away from family doesn’t make sense.. They could’ve just gone to the court house or justice of the peace, get legally married there and move on. Maybe have a reception, nice dinner or party afterwards. She such a beautiful young lady I hope she found her voice in the marriage if not she will lose herself trying to always appease her husband.

  • Yep, she doesn’t want all the attention on her yet she is leaving the most important people out of her life out. I would not be as supportive as her mom and would have had a lot of conversations about the red flags in her future son-in-law. If I am not going to be able to attend the wedding, I am out so you can do it all on your own.

  • He worked in a men’s clothing store so he’s an expert on women’s fashions. Yep. That makes a ton of sense. This mom needs to take off the blinders and start seeing her son for what he is – an opinionated, obnoxious jerk. You did a great job of parenting your son, lady. Instead of creating a gentleman you created a monster. Toxic, abusive marriage here we come.

  • Wanted something just for us. We got married at the courthouse with a couple close friends as witnesses. I wore a wreath of flowers in my hair and a white long sundress and held a small bouquet of flowers the groom wore a suit and tie. It was perfect for US…BUT getting married is a union of two families! I had my mom plan EVERYTHING for our church wedding and reception afterward. My mom even chose my wedding dress because she has incredible taste! My mom got the church wedding and reception she always regretted not having with my dad. We all had a blast and EVERYONE was included. It’s so important to allow your loved ones to celebrate in your new union. ❤

  • I went so far as to search for them on Instagram 🤣 🤣🤣. They are still married, have two kids, and apparently doing pretty well! Edit: Im definitely NOT saying I think this was healthy or good. He was obviously WAY too controlling here. I meant it more like I’m surprised that they are together and “apparently” doing well. Im also well aware that Instagram is not reality 💚

  • This is an old episode. At least 1yr old. I remember commenting that she should run as fast as she can in the other direction. This guy is a control freak and his Mom will be right in the middle of their marriage. I wonder if they got married and if they are still married. That 2nd dress was perfect for her. I hope wherever she is that she’s genuinely happy.🇺🇸🙏✌❤

  • My hubs and I “eloped” in that we had a civil ceremony three months before the church wedding and reception. This civil ceremony was a private ceremony with just our witnesses. We were both in the military and were due to come down on orders, so we had to rush the paperwork to get stationed together (not everyone is so lucky.) It was a paperwork shuffle. We had a church wedding later for… well, my mother. She’d been heartbroken when my sister eloped, so I wanted to make her happy. We had no time to plan a wedding and reception and it was a huge strain, but we did it. We did all for my mom. And yet, 15 year later, when I told her the actual date of our civil ceremony, she said, “Oh, right. That’s the one HIS parents got to go to.” 😮 um…. No. She’d harbored that resentment for 15 years. Good grief. So, no matter what you do, there will always be some drama somewhere. Just try to be kind to those who love you.

  • Update: this show is from 2014, they been married 8 years and have 2 kids. Via her instagram back in 2020 she posted they been doing counseling the past 4 years. She seems happy and it’s interesting how they waited 4 years before having kids either by choice or fertility issues. She said she didn’t wear the dress they picked on the show bc she didn’t like the producers and just picked a dress to end the filming and went back with her mom to get a dress. Who knows she seems happy and it must be hard for her to read all these comments. At least it’s good for other people to learn of one red flag on live tv…( this website deleted my comment before!)

  • This girl will never have an opinion and he will ultimately separate her from her family, he’s already doing it. He is dictating how they will marry and cutting her family from the weeding. This is her little girl and mom has been waiting for this moment giving her daughter away. . Mother in law was a jerk.

  • PSA: Just watched a segment with Randy F. the bride loved everything about her dream dress but the straps. The rep just happened to be in the store at the time, and when asked what the fee would be to edit the straps off, the rep said That model of dress CAN NOT be worn without straps. Their purpose is structural. Without them there is nothing to hold the top up. In this episode, the Mother of the groom suggested/demanded the straps be removed (they were tulle/mesh)but what happens…EGADS if it falls down? It is ALL on her. Never assume you can just remove an element without determining how it is engineered.

  • “I’m actually a wedding planner, so I’ve been to a TON of weddings” Yes, but your MOTHER hasn’t, has she? It’s her daughter’s wedding and you’re allowing your husband not only to control what you wear and where you get married, but also you’re allowing him to stop your family being there?? Girl, you ain’t nothing but a pushover. And that’s putting it nicely. So selfish. You can see how heartbroken her mom is. Edit: btw guys, this isn’t the dress she got married in. Jordan obviously saw the dress before the wedding and made her change it

  • I thought eloping meant marrying without telling anyone beforehand? That’s how I did it the second (and last) time I married! We were passing through Coeur d’Alene Idaho on a mixed business/pleasure trip; Coeur d’Alene has the same rules as Las Vegas for marriages, so we decided to stop and formalise what we’d already had for over 4 years. We didn’t tell anyone and set it up so that my mother was present when the state copy of the marriage license was mailed to us. I pretended I had no idea why the State of Idaho would be mailing me an official document, opened the big envelope, looked inside and said “Honey, do you know anything about this?” in a casual voice. My husband looked inside and said “huh, don’t know…” My mother was really curious by then and said “let me see if I can figure it out” and my (secret) husband handed it over. And we all laughed like loons when she realised we’d pranked her but good.

  • On your wedding day, it is all about the bride! The grooms opinion should be you look “beautiful”, no matter what he thinks. If he is this controlling now and also sending his mom to make sure that his requests are followed, there are not only going to be husband problems, but mother in law problems in the future!! Good luck-I would not marry someone so controlling!!

  • I was a wedding soloist and wanted to avoid all the drama by eloping but my husband said it would break my mom’s heart if she wasn’t there so we compromised and got married at my grandma’s house about 400 miles away and invited just our parents. Then my sister invited herself and family and started taking over and we had to tell her it was just going to be our parents. She still has not forgiven me for cheating her out of being my maid of honor 32 years later. Funny thing this, I have 2 sisters, the one who got mad is the drama queen I wanted to avoid in the first place. She still ruined my special day.

  • 2nd dress, MIL says groom has vetoed netting. 3rd dress, Lori brings out bride with big netting straps and is surprised when MIL says it doesn’t work. Seriously Lori, you just saw the bride completely change her opinion, twice, based on feedback from MIL, and you put her in a dress you knew was going to be a problem. BTW, you knew the MIL was going to be rough with that Queen Karen hairdo. The ‘do is cursed!

  • This episode makes me cry. I don’t understand why she wouldn’t allow her mom to come to the wedding (it is so blatantly obvious that the mom’s feelings are hurt that she can’t come). Her mom seems like such a nice person. I don’t get the husband placing rules on what his wife can wear to the wedding. I don’t get why he wouldn’t want his wife to wear whatever dress that makes her feel beautiful and confident, something that she really loves. Telling someone what to wear is what parents do with their children… it makes my skin crawl.

  • So many people that have lost a parent are seeing this bride throw away one memory that does mean so much to so many. For my second marriage we took off and got married but all those support people in our lives were not there. I wish we would have done the actual marriage differently. At home. Then do a vacation or honeymoon alone elsewhere. But, to each, their own.

  • If this isn’t the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard……”he has rules for HER dress”. I would tell him that HE can choose HER dress if he agrees to wear the same exact dress on their wedding day….including the veil and fancy shoes!! She had better drop him! I’m sure he and his dress will be very happy together!!!!!!

  • I wish her well. I do have to say I am an old woman who never married but if I were you and in love and about to be married I would want my mom there. But my mom passed in 1986 so I look at this episode and think how heart breaking it would be to not have my mom there. I can not begin to imagine excluding my mom or his mom either. You don’t have to have drama unless you make the drama which sadly she has already done. This will haunt her mom forever and that is a horrid drama.

  • Already letting him tell her what to do. have. His mother thinks he is some sort of fashion guru because he sells menswear. Seriously? In what universe does that make him an expert in bridal wear? He’s not wearing it. Let her express herself on the wedding day. Looks like she won’t have a chance during the marriage. Sad.

  • On her IG, she has a pic of her wedding and this is NOT the dress she wore (she bought it but didn’t wear it). She states that she bought it just to get away from the producers of the show because she was so fed up with them. She and Jordan look like they’re happily married with several kids—so I suspect this was edited to make him look bad. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • I plan to elope if I ever get married but I would NEVER not invite the few people close to me. Loving parents deserve to be apart of their child’s journey. I feel so bad for her mom. And maybe one day the daughter will realize her husband is a controlling narcissist. I hope for her sake she’s her own person now.

  • Jordan sounds like a bully & his mom raised him to feel entitled, she’s as guilty as him. Her poor mama, I would have been broken-hearted if my kid’s had eloped. I had a bad 1st marriage, which ended fast, but the wedding was great, I didn’t feel entitled to a second wedding so fast after my 1st, so I told my mom we were eloping & she shut that down immediately, PTL, I am so grateful for my mom. We have such wonderful memories of our small church wedding 💒 and we have been married 44 years ❤

  • I should respect their choice to elope, but I feel so sad for the Bride’s Mom, who sits there holding back her broken heart, not to be included. It seems so selfish and immature not to at the very least “allow” her Mom, (Dad, siblings), to be at their ceremony. I think she may realize and regret one day. The show is probably somewhat staged but the Mom In Law to be is so annoying, is the groom really that controlling?

  • Who she wants to impressed?, her controlling partner doesn’t want no body there?☹️My God, so controlling now can’t imagine after. She’s in danger and blind. This can’t be true, worse that she let this go public 🤦🏻‍♀️poor of her. I feel sorry for her, she’s a victim since the start. This is so wrong.

  • I think the future mother in law should have not come to this appointment BECAUSE she was the problem and not her son!! It really was pleasing her, not him. Probably that Apple did not fall far from that tree!!! It seems to me like he was just mimicking his mom. Not a very good start with that marriage when your mother in law dominates EVERYTHING!!!

  • I always thought eloping means getting married and not telling about it, maybe even for some time…. The groom sounds very controlling and I hope that is just something the editor made it sound like and not one of the starting steps of an escalation in their relationship… the mother in law sounds to involved, and aggressive, maybe she is just choosing to stick to his choices and wishes, But I am not sure the shown and talked about relationships in this appointment are all that healthy

  • Big red flags 🚩 right there. He sends his mom to let them know the rules of what he wants and doesn’t want on her wedding dress. The choice is hers not his. I was absolutely heartbroken for the bride when his mom was shaking her head and saying that he would like the dress and on the second dress he doesn’t want any netting. Get out now before you marry him. You can find someone 100 times better than him. No man has the right to control how his fiancée/wife dresses.

  • I eloped and it WAS that simple. didn’t bother with a wedding dress, just a nice blue dress I already owned. It was 30 bucks. it was a pretty blue. The entire ordeal cost 10 dollars in gas and 35 dollars for the licenses and certificate. Didn’t bother telling our families for months after because we’ve already been together for 8 years and bought a house so it didn’t matter.

  • True strength does not demand the weakness of others. Strong opinions mean simply that, strong opinions. That’s when someone represents themselves strongly. Controlling opinions, these ignore or deprioritize the opinions of others. If this bride cannot represent herself as well, then she needs to run as fast as she can from her fiance and his family, and their “strong opinions”.

  • WOW. My husband had one rule. We paid for our wedding ourselves. The dress needed to be in budget. Did he have preferences? I’m sure he did. I know he prefers white wedding dresses and sleeves are a religious priority. Still, my only limit was that it fit the budget. Well, that and that it wasn’t my mother’s wedding dress. My mother is much shorter and much more curvy in the bodice. Her gown had detailing on the bodice that prevented alterations. If I didn’t stand as still as the guards at Buckingham Palace, everyone could see completely across my naked chest from the sides of her backless dress. The shorter height was an asset; my father was a quadriplegic and I wanted to avoid a floor length dress so I could dance with him and not worry about his wheelchair running over my dress. The feeling naked and basically being half naked was never gonna fly!

  • Yeesh! When it said the groom had rules I was thinking more along the lines of how revealing the dress was. I was surprised MIL said the strapless gown (after they tucked them in) was ok. She so loved that one dress and thought it was perfect for the location and her face just fell when MIL brought up another rule it violated. This marriage isn’t going to last. She’s only going to take his rules for so long.
