Should You Sell Your Wedding Ring After Divorce?

After a divorce, wedding and engagement rings can become painful reminders of the relationship that ended. Selling your unworn ring after divorce is a simple way to rid yourself of this painful memory. There is no “right” time to remove the wedding band, but it can be done in various ways, such as giving it back to your ex, repurposing it, or melting it down.

Repurposing an engagement ring or wedding band can be an opportunity for a woman to reclaim her personal style and individuality following a divorce. Some women have sold their wedding rings during a time when they needed extra money, such as taking their kids on a trip to the California coast, buying boobs, living on, or putting the money in their kids’ 529 plans.

Giving your ring back to your ex-spouse is usually considered the property of the spouse to whom it was given, but if your ring or diamond was your ex-spouse’s family heirloom, you might want to consider giving it back, even if you are under no legal obligation to do so. Selling your ring after divorce can be emotionally satisfying and provide a lump of cash when needed.

To sell your ring after divorce, it is important to research the actual value of your rings and contact a Kane County divorce attorney at Goostree Law Group. You can also take your ring to a locally owned jewelry store and trade it for something else that you want to wear. If you don’t need the cash, you can donate the money to a worthy cause. Repurposing your ring is also possible, but be clear with your jeweler about your hopeful price range and timeline.

How much is your wedding ring worth? Once you decide to sell your wedding ring, you’ll probably have questions. “What’s my diamond ring worth?” “Where should I sell my wedding ring?” “Who’s the best wedding ring buyer?” Our team at Diamond Buyers knows it can be emotional and we’ve built our business through word-of-mouth referrals by being transparent and easy to work with. Our GIA grad gemologists and diamond buyers will help you understand how to value your diamond ring. The value of your wedding ring depends on the color, cut, clarity, and carat weight of the diamond, as well as the metal it’s set in. Some high-end designer brands charge a lot. We can assess the value of your jewelry even if you don’t have documents. However, the following documents can help:

Lab report: The two most trusted diamond grading labs are the GIA and the AGS. If your diamond has a report from one of these labs, give us that info. Other labs may not be as accurate, but they can still help us in our preliminary evaluation.

Third-party appraisal. Insurance companies use jewelry appraisals. An appraisal describes your jewelry and lists its replacement value. This value is often much higher than the market value or the liquidity of your wedding ring. A good appraiser can estimate the weight and quality of your wedding ring or fine jewelry.

Who takes the wedding ring after divorce?

The Florida dissolution of marriage statute addresses gifts made by one spouse to the other during the marriage. An interspousal gift is a gift from one spouse to the other during the marriage. It is a marital asset subject to equitable distribution. Wedding rings are considered interspousal gifts and thus marital assets. Each spouse gets half the value of both rings when the marriage ends. The engagement ring is a pre-marital or non-marital asset because it was given by one spouse to the other before they got married. Courts say that engagement rings are gifts made by the future husband to his fiancée. If the couple gets married, the condition is met and it becomes a completed gift. The wife keeps the ring because it is her non-marital property. If the couple doesn’t marry, the fiancée should return the ring because it wasn’t a completed gift. If the ring is worth it, you can sue your ex for it back. If the ring is sold or lost, the other person may be sued for the value of the ring. I hope it doesn’t come to that. If you have questions about your rights and responsibilities in a divorce or want to discuss them before you get married, please write or call me.

  • I know a couple who had both wedding rings and her engagement ring melted down into two new rings and a diamond pendant for their 3 kids. Because even though the marriage ended, the kids were the product of what the rings symbolized. Divorce isn’t always about getting away from something. Sometimes it’s about reshaping your family so everyone is happy and can be their best self.

  • Piece of advice !! : if you ever wanna sell something no matter how small it is … on Craig’s list … Call your local police department and ask if there is a police officer available and and tell the person to meet you in the parking lot and that way you can sell whatever and be safe at the same time . There was a story on the news a few years ago about it . 🙂

  • Fantastic! I am so happy for you and I have a deep respect for you that continues to grow. You are in a strong place right now and it is such an honor to be able to see your journey unfold. You completely rebuilt your life and created a healthy home for yourself and your children. The ring really does represent a past life that is truly over . I know that the vacation will be fantastic and the years ahead will continue to be filled with joy. You are a true inspiration and I give thanks everyday that you are here.

  • Thank you so much again for the article that you uploaded about your divorce a while back. It helped me a bit when I was going through my separation about a year and a half ago. We weren’t married but were together for 7 years with little ones involved. I’m happy that you found someone new and are very happy with them. I don’t think that I can ever be with anyone ever again. Thank you very much again, & thank you for your great article’s 🙂

  • First of all you look gorgeous as always. I have an unrelated question. A while back I watched a article of yours where you mentioned a website to get cheap prescription glasses? What was that website? I can’t remember the name of the site and I can’t find the article that you mentioned it in. Thanks! : )
