Early on in the epidemic a friend’s nephew came to our workplace. He had HIV and many health issues. When he got up to leave, I hugged him. He started crying and said no one had touched him since his diagnosis. I felt so angry that people were so damn determined to be ignorant and judgmental. Even at that time it was very clear how the disease is transmitted.
She made such a massive difference, not just medically, but in society. I’m sure that thanks to her more and more doctors behaviour changed for the better and the same about people, common citizens. I am a chiropractor so very different than an MD. I see several clients with HIV and when they tell me or I see it in their forms it’s as if saying the sky is just a different shade of blue, and we carry on. They should go back to those times, so each person is aware of whether or not they have something. That should be mandatory everywhere, so it gives the other person the choice. Omg, I wasn’t expecting the end. I thought she was continuing her work in India with HIV patients. Her vision for happiness and attainment of love or family should be a goal for other physicians treating patients who are HIV positive. They should not treat but also advocate for them to have a fulfilling life. In addition, I’m happy for both Manu and Karthik. I respect their choice of not procreating. I hope they enjoy each other for all the days of their marriage.
This doctor reminds me of one of my clinical preceptors back when I was in school. But I digress. I really do not understand why HIV is still so highly stigmatized in 2020. Something else I’m not understanding is how this doctor finds time to do research, teach medicine, run a practice, AND be a matchmaker.
I’ve lost a few friends and family members to this virus. They passed during the late 80s into the 2010’s. As an American, I know this brave and compassionate woman’s work has helped the world over have a better understanding of this virus. I’m so happy that she also understood the basic human needs of compassion and having a partner in life. Sometimes just having one person on this planet that loves and understands you can make all the difference in your world.
Stumble upon this documentary by accident and all i could say the vibes in this documentary is heartwarming. Kudos to Doctor Solomon for her combination of knowledge and kindness for breaking a stigma of HIV patients. I think all medical worker should stay away from prejudice and stereotype when dealing with patients.
That ending is probably one of the most impactful endings i’ve seen in a docu First you get to know their story, and then they reveal how they look. It ropes you into their lives and stories. Because you cant judge them based on their looks or the stereotypes we have. Amazing work by the directors and the editors.
That was an amazing journey in Dr. Solomon’s life after her death. Her love story, how she helped the HIV positive to find love in their lives & how she pursued her work with passion despite the other doctors & professors judged her for her work. I hope her work is recognized around the world. She’s really a miracle worker. She made difference & made it possible for HIV patients that it is possible to find love despite their conditions. I really love this documentary.
Dr Suniti Solomon is such an amazing person. She denied society’s pushback to detect HIV in Indians through sex workers, married out of love at a time in India when you could be murdered for honor by your family (still happens in some cases) and has such awe-inspiring self-confidence! I wish to be more like her. She says “CD4 is our astrology.” And believe me, that’s a might powerful statement to make in a country astrology decides the final fates of marriages.
Before I first had sex for the first time with my girlfriend at the time, I asked her if she was sure since it would of been her first time. I asked her ” what If I had some kind of disease? Aren’t you scared?” She told me that she loved me at that’s what matters and that she wants this. We been married now for 20 years but thinking back, I could of got stds from someone else and gave it to her. People tend not to think much about the consequences of unprotected sex when they are attracted someone. Sometimes they end up with pregnant. Sometimes they get infected with an std that can be cured. Sometimes worse if they get aids and without knowing it gives it to someone else. Nobody wants to think that their partner might have hiv.

This devadasi system operates in one particular region of India. It was very prevalent once in that region akin to Phoenician / Roman temple practices; once they were considered oracle sayers in India too. In time, the High priest cast system together with local land lord made them into Temple prostitution although it is punishable by law today. They have no relevance to Calcutta prostitution ring; two separate stories.
Most of the Hindus living in Western world don’t aggree with this even though they know this is still practiced and a bitter truth. Practices and suppression of this form should be condemned, government won’t do anything because they are afraid of losing electoral votes. One of the saddest things that people are unaware – Devadasis used to be highly educated and prominent wealthy women… colonisation destroyed the system and the result left the above – the mindset and belief had not changed and left this huge void in its gaps. Unfortunately, the very women that they used to revered are now despised.

However, if one actually wants to read up on Devadasi, one should look towards research papers, not foreign YouTube articles with incorrect and incomplete information. Even the subtitles are not matching with the actual audio. The practice around yellamma does involve forced sex work but yellamma herself is not the goddess of prostitution. A god of prostitution does not exist. In southern parts of India, Yellamma is revered as an avatar of Paravati and is worshiped as the fertility god. A lot of her devotees maybe subalterns and low-caste people, but she has big temples in her honor. The lore around her is now steeped in superstitions and misinterpreted legends that are now disguised as tradition. Devadasis were devotees and temple dancers who practiced dances like Bharatnatyam and Odisi but they started to lose the patronage of Persian and Mughal rulers since they misinterpreted the tradition. They were unaware that art could be a form of offering to a deity since this practice was absent in the religion they revered. By the Brits came, they imposed Victorian morality. It was not just that the devadasi practice was changed but many other things (such as wearing a blouse with a saree etc). But by their time, the practice has degenerated into sex work. One can easily find multiple sources of the Devadasi system if one wants to read up more on it.

Devadasis were employed and were under the patronage of Kings much like the Geishas and the Vestal Virgins of Rome. Dedication to the Goddess Yellamma started probably when the locals in the past who suffered from starvation dedicated their children to the temple because they simply cannot sustain them anymore. Destitute people often take extreme measures and this is prevalent in many parts of the world not just this remote village in India. This is merely one facet of it. And like all poor people left without a choice, they were taken advantage of by the ones with money and even now, the West sees this as a way for them to point at instead of solving child prostitution issues in their own country. 🤦♂️
I believe this is the worst possible thing existing in every country, society and religion. Even the virtual world is not free from such a curse. No religion promotes prostitution. Religions only create safe room for survival of the human beings who are supposed to be rejected by the society. It’s not a cult, it’s Hinduism, and it’s probably older than your religion. This is why people in the west have difficulty understanding Hinduism. Even if there are sutras and teachings about sex, it’s not actually about the sex itself. It’s using pleasure and interaction with the physical world to achieve Divinity or self realization. In Hinduism, especially in tantra, there are multiple ways one can reach enlightenment and divinity. There is one small portion of it that involves sexual stimulation, but people in the west hear about this, and they blow it out of proportion. A religion like this could never exist in the west, because it would just attract a bunch of stupid young guys that are only there to get off. That is not the goal. Hinduism acknowledges all aspects of life as divine, including sex. This Disturbed many early Christian travelers in the area who misinterpreted it as something evil and seductive. It couldn’t be father from the truth. And these temples take great precautions to ensure that the power dynamic between the man and woman is equal. Many of these women trained for nearly two decades before they even saw a man. I was a sacred prostitute until I met a man who I fell in love with, and he bought my freedom from the temple, and I’m happy to say he’s my husband now.

♾♾Consistently Pray for forgiveness, guidance in a good (positive) direction, and for help against evil. Pray to be saved from hell (whatever that may be). Pray for your friends and your family too, it only takes a minute or so/less at a time to pray. Do it and your life will slowly get better, or maybe quickly. It probably just depends on you and the kind of person you are/have been. Don’t wait until its too late and you have to suffer the consequences of built up bad karma from immoral acts/unrepented sins. Maybe together we can help make the world a better place by changing ourselves for the better, and changing things around us for the better. Misleading article..I am from Karnataka, India, the same state Saudatthi temple is situated. The devadasi practice is long gone and the temple is now a popular tourist destination. And not one prostitute you showed later in the article belongs to Karnataka state. And Kolkata city is more than 2000 kms from the temple state that you are talking about. Prostitution is due to their personal choices and not due to the temple beliefs. Get your facts straight or stop making misleading articles to the world who are unaware of the facts. ITS A CRIME!
Factually incorrect.. The devdasi system of shown in the clip has no relationship to the sex trade of eastern India.. The dev dasi system is too a great extent outlawed by successive government in the states of karnataka and the sex trade in western India was at a time the main end destination…While the system in itself is worst and should be uprooted, the makers of this clip need a lesson in Indian Geography
