What is the symbolic meaning of the pineapple?

The pineapple is important. Americans started getting pineapples from the Caribbean in the 1700s. The pineapple became a symbol of hospitality in early America because it was rare and seemed exotic. Because trade routes between America and the Caribbean Islands were slow and dangerous, it was a big deal for a host to get a ripe pineapple for guests. Some accounts say that New England sea captains would put a pineapple outside their homes when they came back from the Caribbean or Pacific. Pineapples were often used as the centerpiece of large displays of food. Pineapples were also used to decorate beds, tablecloths, napkins, and other things for guests. Today, the pineapple symbolizes hospitality, and pineapple products are everywhere. From lamps to candle holders to salt and pepper shakers and more, the pineapple motif says, “Welcome!”

  • I am amazed at all of the articles offered on YouTube that promote themselves by implying Virgin is some kind of swingers cruise. My wife and I have been on Virgin several time, right from the start and NOTHING goes on there that wouldn’t be common in other lines. We love it because there’s no kids running around touching everything, sneezing and coughing on everything and cutting in lines, jumping and splashing everyone, etc. We have 8 children of our own but we’re old now and LOVE adult cruises – NOT “Adult” as in swinger, “Adult” as in no kids.

  • Very interesting article! Guess you DO learn something new every day. I’ve never heard about the whole upside-down pineapple thing! I guess I wouldn’t have not being a swinger myself, but I’m no prude so you actually surprised me with this information. What’s particularly fascinating is that tomorrow I’m going over to this couple’s house to talk about cruises – I’ve never been on one – and I do know they happen to be swingers. Boy, am I going to surprise them when I ask if they wear an upside-down pineapple when they take a cruise!! I thought I heard of everything before this – GUESS NOT! Enjoyed your article very much. You are very lovely, I might add! 🙂

  • I have been involved with cruising as a port detination management company, providing 2-3 day shore excursions to a Balitic Sea port where 2 or 3 days off the ship it the main reason to cruise the Baltic Sea. The jewel of the cruise is St Petersburg but since Covid it has almost stopped being offered. One company contacted us about a charter of a 3000 passenger ship was a company that provided cruises for gays, and booked sold every sailing. The programs we came up with and tours were very well recieved and the guides loved the gays because they tipped so well and everyone was very happy. Later after 3 years of those we were contacted by others who wanted swinger cruises. Those had been running in the Carribian for a while but longer cruises were proposed, 12-14 day. That was my first experience with dealing with swingers and just like the gays, everyone was so nice, considerate and zero problems, that those because the most fun to set up, like taking over an elegant palace for a 2000 member party and that lasted 2 days. One reason people in the life style are so pleasant might be that they are exhauted from having every bit of energy drained out of them. One trait, here are more women than men. More older women, fewer young women and the 35-60 being the largest concentration of members. Swingers as a demographic group tend to be upper middle class or upper class, or possibly self seleted by it being expensive.

  • I remember an early YT Cruise review of Scarlet Lady when sex toys and never ending condom supplies were available. The reviewer was at a loss for words but I was chuckling at the idea of all the randy sailors on the trips 😂 Oh, I’ve never been “in the lifestyle” but I am familiar with the jargon 😉 Still, you did a great job of defining things with both humor and British taste 👍 Although I can imagine how a modern Monty Python would handle it😂🤣

  • There’s actually, at least two that I know of, Facebook groups for upside down pineapple groups for Virgin. Jus saying. 😊 Also, there are two other cruise lines that have swinger cruise ( whole ship take over ) at least once a year. So it’s not just Virgin. FYI: I was told by Virgin representative that topless sunbathing is allowed on deck 17 ( The Perch ) area on sea days.

  • I think I’ve seen other cruise vloggers claiming that topless sun bathing is acceptable on a select few cruise lines, and is usually confined to specific private areas of the ship. Celestyal, Costa and Virgin Voyage are the lines I seen it claimed allow it. Apparently Deck 17 The Perch is the assigned area on Virgin Voyages according to one reddit post.

  • Hello Lucy! I would like to know how I can be of assistance to my room steward on the day of debarkation. Should I strip the bed(s) and put the linen in a pile? I leave the used towels together on the floor in a pile in the bathroom. I consolidate any trash in the trash receptacles into one. I leave the balcony furniture (when applicable) the way I found it. Just wondering if these things are helpful to the steward and what else I might be able to do to make the “turn around” for my room as seamless as possible? Thank you! You ROCK! ~Smitty

  • Lucy, You addressed what can be a “touchy” 😀subject in a wonderfully polite and open manner. Good on you! (and this continues to show your talents for public speaking know little bounds….like I’ve written before, you’re better at this than most TV news anchors!) Although I personally prefer monogamy, I’m not a prude, and don’t judge others for their passions. So, like you say “to each their own”. BTW, I don’t think I’ll show this article to my Mom, though. ha ha 😀 Fair winds. John

  • This is hysterical – I love it ! Me and my husband had such a riot on our most recent cruise with his elderly parents- they were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary and we brought all sorts of decorations for their door and magnets and had pineapples and we kept turning them upside down and making jokes every time we went by their room! It was of course all in fun and it was hysterical perusal them freak out every time we turned them upside down! Finally my mother in law took them and hid them so we couldn’t do it anymore after about mid-week !!! But we had a ball just goofing around about it! ❤️❤️❤️

  • I have been on 13 cruises, gone to the singles mixers and they are always a total sausage party! I have looked for pineapples and have never seen one that was serious. The few pineapple towels, bathing suits, etc… have always been because, wait for it… they like pineapples. The best place to find people is at the LATE NIGHT dance parties, that is when people have been drinking all day, they are loosening up and then they are ready…

  • Seems as though things might have changed a bit. My ex and I were swingers, and a lot of this is familiar (though not the pineapples) but “unicorn” is a definite. Rhinos, not as much, though I’ve heard the term. In my experience, most swingers are into that because one partner, almost always the woman, is bisexual – which is why rhinos really aren’t much of a thing. At every swinger event we ever went to, single women could get in free, single men were not allowed. It was clear who most swingers wanted – the women. The women wanted women and the men wanted women.

  • Great delivery and concise info. content. Also, very well done by God genetically. I listened to all of her dialogue even though I wasn’t looking for it. She WAS worth listening to. Have a wonderful life my dear and know that there are no mistakes, it’s all good. I would love to play Leon Russell’s SONG FOR YOU in the right hand section of you tube. Rocky Hill

  • Awesome content as usual. Crazy Virgin Voyages question: Do you know if the partitions between the Sea Terrace balconies can be opened. We have adjoining room with our family members and wanted to open up the balcony. No one seems to be able to answer the question. I hoped you might find someone on the ship who knew.

  • Was on a Royal Caribbean ship when they announced next cruise would be a “couples cruise”. A short 4 day sail from Tampa! Longest 4 days of my life! My friend the Spa Manager nearly quit as her massage rooms were like a scene from Caligula, and the stuff we were selling in the shops were indescribable! The chief security officer told me, once the cruise had finished, that out of 2000 passengers, 1400 were couples, 200 were sex workers, and the remaining 400 were voyeurs!

  • I remember back in the mid 80’s getting to know a group of swingers up on one of the islands of the Great Lakes. They were a “closed group” of around six couples. Most of the guys were very successful businessmen who had invested in some really nice yachts and would spend summer weekends rafting off together on a party island. These couples were married for an average of 25 years and because of their open lifestyle they never worried about cheating nor having to worry about contracting STD’s. They were not a “bi” group either, just straight fun. My employer and I had business dealings with one of the businessman in the group and he invited us to raft off with the group. We never participated in their lifestyle but we were hitting the bars and restaurants with our girls. I can actually say that their lifestyle eliminated the worries of cheating spouses which was one big worry they did not have. The guys during the day would gather and discuss various business ventures and which stocks to invest in, a very informative skull session! And yes it was a cigar smoking cocktail event. After which we all turned our attention to hosing down our vessels. I found it to be a very healthy lifestyle they had adapted.

  • Just got off a carnival cruise and me and my wife noticed the first day that the cabin right next to ours had a pineapple on the door. Neither of us knew about the upside down pineapple meaning until now and for the life of us we can’t remember if the pineapple was upside down or right side up. It’s just funny because we simply looked at it as a marker to find our room every night when we had too many drinks. Knowing we were right next door to the pineapple room. 😂

  • Omg I worked on a chartered swingers cruise! This was on Azamara a decade ago. I’m also (was) a Steiner for 10 years. It was crazy! Our cabaret was turned into a room full of mattresses and sex swings. 80 yr old men with 18 years old by the pool doing the nasty. Dining room had people under the table eating but not dinner 😂. We had a curfew and we had to be dresses professionally always so not to be mistaken for a swinger. Our spa made it very clear that we weren’t offering sexual treatments. I was LT the whole 10 years.

  • I’m a Brit living in the Netherlands, when I first came I learned about the swinger’s clubs ( known as couples clubs) and sex clubs and brothel’s….. I was initially surprised by the way the whole scene was just part of life……. the fact that it’s not seen as seedy or perverse the buildings and grounds reflect this ( the ones I have seen or have been pointed out to me) by being well kept and blend until the area like any other building ( no signboard or flashing lights or advertising) This is not like a speakeasy that is hidden from the law but to be discreet for the sake of the neighborhood…… I know plenty of couples that have either been for the experience ( just because you are inside doesn’t mean you have to participate, but you can observe) and some that go regularly. The ones I know go far enough away to avoid people they might know, that’s because the only time they have sex with other people is in the club and nowhere else, but if someone local sees them it could cause unwanted contact……… At first I couldn’t understand how they could deal with the idea of another person with your partner, but when it was explained that there is no emotional connection just sexual fun and only when they are in the club, and for some the risk of an affair ending in divorce is far less likely due to bordom in the bedroom

  • I went to an event on the Scarlet Lady called “Just the tip” It was a little icebreaker activity, quite fun. I got paired with this guy and we got chatting about how he accidentally wore pineapple shorts because it’s a cruise and we’re going to the Bahamas and he kept getting approached and people saying weird but not obvious things to him. Next morning at breakfast he was talking to his friend going “last night was wild, people kept telling me how they thought I was hot or their wife thought I was sexy etc” and his friend was like “Yeah dude, it was the pineapple shorts”. We laughed and I’m like “Your bro did you dirty, he totally knew what you were getting yourself into and just thought it was going to be funny to watch.”

  • Oh my… I’m going on a solo cruise on NCL in 10 days, I’m thinking I’ll be hiding in my cabin lol – I’m now going through my clothing to make sure I have no pineapples… I have little horses hopefully that doesn’t mean anything I don’t know about! lol – last year I went on an MSC cruise after I got divorced… one woman said… what’s wrong with you! I’ve been putting the moves on all week! Obviously I’ve become quite dense! That’s for your article!

  • Thank you for explaining the terminology. I saw someone post, on the Facebook group for my upcoming virgin vovoyages, they are looking for unicorns. And I thought they were just being silly and funny and carefree. I appreciate knowing what it means as I am not into that and will know the appropriate and respectful response if the situation ever came up.

  • ALSO: Be advised that there are promotional groups that organize smaller groups on public cruises too. So, it will not be uncommon to find a small group of Singles/LGBTQ/Swingers/anything, but since there was no charter, they will be under all the normal public rules. Just don’t be surprised if you find a group on a family cruise.

  • There was a singer on Valiant Lady who called herself a Unicorn. Does that mean she was advertising herself to everyone as a single woman available for swinging? There is a large swinger population on Carnival. I was on Valiant Lady in February. I am a straight single woman and never felt uncomfortable. There were lots of gay couples, straight couples and solo cruisers. It just felt comfortable for adults which was very freeing. I agree everything was done tastefully and I have another Valiant Lady cruise planned for November.

  • Virgin is easier to find swingers than other lines. Not saying there aren’t swingers on all, just more on virgin. Nov 22 cruise on the scarlet lady, my wife took on 2 guys on the porch, deck 17, while one of their wives gave me oral as we watched. We’ve never had that type of experience in 30 some cruises on other lines.

  • There are apps specifically designed for swingers on cruises that help find and talk to other swingers. Facebook groups. Other lifestyle specific sites have forums for cruises. It’s actually really easy these days. My first cruise. 21 years ago on board a Princess shop, there were a group of shit 70 swinger and we enjoyed ourselves just like everyone else on board. It’s not a new concept at all for the cruise industry

  • I worked on cruise ships for a few years in the 1990s. I knew nothing of any of this. The black ring I bought in St. Thomas and wore in my right ring finger only was mistaken for a wedding ring. I wasn’t married, but the cruise director used to think it was funny to say in the welcome show that I had called home that day and that my “wife” had given birth that day. Pax reactions ranged from people buying me gifts to yelling at me for “…being on a cruise while your wife is home with a baby!”

  • Would you have had any chance to say you weren’t comfortable working in a sex toy shop and ask to be assigned to a different shop? I’ll admit at one point your articles had me thinking Virgin was somewhat rainbow oriented with drag shows being the primary entertainment, but have since been convinced otherwise. I don’t oppose the existence of drag shows, but I have no interest in attending one.

  • I don’t get why all these groups of three or more people are into sex swings.. They are really best for pairs/ couples because one person is in the swing, another person is blowing the mind of person in the swing or (Swinger)… Where do the rest of the people fit in.. Are they on their own lonely swings, swinging isolated off to the side just listening and perusal with hungry eyes. I mean how much fornication can really be done in swings.. A spotter is good for safety but it can leave an odd person out and spark jealousy. Edit- it has been explained to me that because sailors utilize hammocks to take away some of the motion sickness of the waves.. The people that like to bed other couples would ask for multiple hammocks and extra hooks to be brought into their staterooms.. They became called swingers after they were all exhausted after a romp they would be there together swinging in the waves in unison as the hammocks rocked back and fourth..

  • I don’t think I ever knew an “upside down pineapple” meant being a swinger. I would probably recognize the meaning of a gender symbol with three appendages. I have heard of “unicorn” meaning a single woman swinger but not of a “rhino” meaning a single man swinger. Letter groups like FFM and MMF are probably well understood. Hmmmm.

  • I don’t have a problem with swingers onboard. In fact, if approached by the right couple, I could buy into this type of vacation lifestyle quite easily. The hardest part would be convincing my wife to go along. In the end, I think she would buy into it, mostly because she would like to seek adventure. We are both in our early 60’s, have been monogamous throughout our relationship ( 46 years and counting ). I’m curious as well, having sex with another woman and knowing that your wife knows about it and is okay with it would be ideal. I myself have had prostate issues that have made it difficult to have an erection…..maybe being with another woman might correct that, who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️ And in the end my wife wins too when we get back home lol

  • Going on a cruise with an attractive wife is getting to be a bit of a headache lately. Dudes think they can say whatever they want and swingers REALLY try to swap. Like to the point where I almost got into two physical confrontations last week and got into an actual one when some woman thought it was ok to get handsy at a bar. Husband tried to bow up when we aggressively told her to eff off and he got dropped. Y’all swingers out there and guys in general better mind your manners. Bunch of them swingers all 🤮🤢 looking anyways, bunch of sissy boys letting someone else bang your wife. Sham marriage is what that is.
