HMTQ went there to pray nearly every morning she was in residence. So, if you don’t see a smile on the faces of the Royal Family, they were worn out with battles from Meghan and Harry.

Hi Brit here. The veil took 500 hours to create. It was hand embroidered with the national flowers of the 53 Commonwealth countries and poppies to represent California. I think it was beautiful (but the dress hideous) but I believe the Queen questioned why Markle was getting married in white!. Markle did not respect the generosity of the RF, (attention given to her choices and cost of her wedding) whilst initially welcomed here with open arms. The ongoing disrespect, lies and cruel spite of the Sussex’s makes me want to weep especially for the late Queen Elizabeth.

I have always disliked Princess Diana’s wedding dress. The color, the style, the size. It was awful and didn’t fit her well at all. From the neck up, she was stunning though. Princess Eugenie’s dress was such a thoughtful, economical choice. She looked very princessy in it!! I just thought she wore the wrong tiara for the dress. Princess Catherine’s dress will forever be iconic. Classic, perfectly tailored, and perfectly appropriate for the future Queen consort. Meghan’s dress could’ve been pretty with a softer fabric and better tailoring. I still don’t love the style, but you can’t dress for everyone. I also thought the color was a bit inappropriate. Few people can wear stark white (my daughter’s dress was a subtle blush), but it did her no favors for her coloring. Especially for her third marriage. The veil was the worst of her ensemble because it felt like she was mimicking Princess Diana in a way. So over-the-top and unnecessarily gauche (and yes, I felt that way about PD’s too!). A simple veil (without a blusher) that fell just past the waist would’ve been more appropriate. A neat updo would’ve helped too.

The Jordanian wedding ceremony dress shows how stunning simplicity can be. Both Diana’s and MM’s were disappointing for different reasons. Diana’s was of the time and her age – she was barely out of her teens, and they were really selling the ‘fairy tale princess’ angle in the press. MM’s was ill-fitting but also BORING as hell. It looked like a bed sheet. The reception dress was batter, but not the best choice for someone with shoulders like a linebacker.
Catherine single handedly pulled us out of the generic strapless satin era. 90s-00s was rough for wedding wear. The romantically timeless revival spared a lot of women from unsightly wedding portraits. I also appreciate that it was rather “modest.” The trend opened up a new wave of classy designs. I heard that the reason why Smeg’s dress looked so horrible was because she kept demanding changes constantly, up until the very last moment. She refused to have additional fittings, the last one being months before the big day. She kept throwing fits & wanted changes but didn’t bother to show up for a final fitting. Ridiculous, but I’m glad it turned out so badly. She THOUGHT she was Princess Ariel on her wedding day, but in reality she ended up looking like Vanessa/Ursula instead. I also heard that the Queen wanted her to wear a more appropriate color, considering she was already a divorcee. She showed up in that blindingly white dress much to the Queen’s surprise & disapproval. The veil was just her trying to cosplay Diana again. She knew she couldn’t do a 25 foot train like Diana’s dress so she went for an over the top long veil. Meghan was told that she should NOT wear white or have a veil. (this being her second or third marriage. BUT, of course she could NOT follow protocol or instructions. She went ahead and ordered the OTT veil with the Commonwealth flowers embroidered on the edges with the same motif as the Spencer tiara; then sent H to ask if she could wear it. Uncle Charles S said ‘no, she’s not a Spencer, and not marrying in to the Spencer family’ That is why the veil is completely ‘out of tune’ with the awful dress. I had heard that MM wanted a wedding that was more expensive than William and Catherine’s. Since she was thwarted with the emerald tiara, a veil that was longer than Diana’s. A cursory google of “meaning of wedding veil” resulted in “Historically the wedding veil represented the purity of the bride wearing it (their emphasis). The lifting of the veil was seen as a symbolic gesture to show the bride’s commitment to her new husband and also the loss of her innocence.” So yeah, as others pointed out in the comments- a bit of a mockery to the Queen.

As a contemporary (in age) of Princess Di, I can attest to owning a Vogue pattern version of her wedding gown in green satin. It was beautiful, but rather voluminous. MM’s reported behavior leading up to the wedding was so cringe worthy. No one with manners behaves like she did. You don’t have to be in the aristocracy to understand how to act graciously. She has never,then nor now, shown gratitude for anything. Consequently, it’s easy to find fault with almost everything she does.
meghan’s look is what I call “slap-a-doodle”. It screams…I want to be chic…look at meeeeeeee and then doesn’t have the patience to do the actual work to perfect it. It is consistent with her inconsistent personality, values, and apparently her podcast work ethic. The veil was a nod to Diana; me thinks.
Meghan’s dress was inappropriate for the occasion. The neckline especially was all wrong. Because the Royal Weddings are in the church, and for these churches the shoulders need to be covered, that Meghan’s were barely covered is actually quite offensive, and as she was marrying in the Queen’s church it was not only an insult to the church but to the Queen. On the drama around Meghan, well most of it is not surprising, but the most interesting one was on the tiara. There are multiple stories, but the first one I heard was after the tiara had been decided on, and it was that Meghan didn’t have an appointment and just turned up demanding the wedding tiara for a ‘rehearsal’ with her hairdresser, she was told no. I remember a number of people wondering why she didn’t do what Catherine’s hairdresser did for her wedding hair practices and just buy a cheap plastic tiara to practice with. I think that showed the type of person Meghan was, and it makes many of the stories about her in the lead up to the wedding quite believable. Oh, and the drama over the bridesmaids was apparently first reported when someone overheard one of the dressmakers telling her friends about it in the pub! Lesson there is twofold, one don’t piss off people because they will gossip, and two don’t talk about stuff like that in a pub because it can be overheard. I’ve always loved Catherine’s gown and her reception dress. She absolutely rocked both! And of course Pippa’s bridesmaid dress was gorgeous and she rocked her dress too! But I ADORE Beatrice’s gown and how she altered it to make it her own. It was gorgeous when the Queen wore it too. I think Princess Beatrice actually wanted a smaller wedding but her Dad was pushing for the big wedding for his own ego. So she was able to use the restrictions of the pandemic to get the wedding she really wanted. As for Eugenie’s dress, I didn’t love the front but really loved the back. I was married in the 80s like Diana & those big puffy sleeves were something else. My bridesmaid dresses were Jessica McClintock (so perfect for the 80s). To start, I really know nothing about fashion. However, I thought Meagan‘s veil added something needed to a plain Jane dress. I loved that it supposedly, symbolized the commonwealth. The detail was beautiful. I remember the day of her wedding, when she climbed out and we could see the whole dress. I was a bit underwhelmed. I figured as an actress, she would have available the best designers and outshine all other royal wedding dresses. My first thought was why didn’t she have a hair dresser? Then, why would she choose something so forgettable? The veil was the only thing that saved it for me, finally we saw delicate and elegant. The tiara was absolutely perfect as well. To match that veil and tiara with an otherwise plain dress saved the look. Any other tiara from the Queens collection would have missed the mark. Whoever pulled this one out knew what they were doing, Ms. Kelly I suppose. I think Eugenie’s dress was my favorite. The back is what did it for me as well. It was the unexpected that I loved.
Beebs, did you know that the back of Eugenie’ s dress was designed to show her scar (or at least not hide it) from her operation as a young girl, to correct her scoliosis. Also to be noted, her sister Beatrice not only wore the Queen’s gown, but also wore the Queen’s own Wedding Tiara. That was such a sign of Granny Approval.
Take a look at Princess Angela of Liechtenstein’s wedding dress. It looks very much to me like M copied it. I say M because, if scuttlebutt is true, she kept complaining and demanding the dress be changed right up the last minute. I tend to believe this due to the proven fact that the bridesmaid dresses had to be remade, and they had to work to fix them through the night before the wedding. I, too was completely underwhelmed. She really had a chance to have a stylish, amazing second marriage dress and set trends. A lovely soft silver gray, or a very soft peach, would’ve looked lovely on her. She didn’t need a monster veil; she would’ve looked amazing with her hair in a proper up-do, and the tiara, with perhaps a diamond and pearl choker and matching earrings. Heck, if she really wanted to set trends, she could’ve simply bejeweled her hair, then, much as Sarah Ferguson did, have the tiara affixed when they were in the back signing the paperwork; she would’ve gone in a “commoner” and walked out a “royal”. But, hey, it was her (underwhelming, in my opinion) wedding, not mine. My favorite is Princess Catherine’s ensemble, as well. She wore the dress, it didn’t wear her, and everything she wore was a perfect blend, from her specially made earrings that matched the tiara, to the lace work on the veil and dress. Loved the ceremony, as well.
I loved Catherine’s because of the traditional beauty. It was perfect for her and will forever be timeless. I think Beatrice wearing one of the queens was very special and suited her personality perfectly. I LOVE Pippa’s dress. It was unique, which I feel goes with her personality. It was perfectly suited for her figure. I remember when seeing it, and I was immediately taken in by it. It’s stunning. Now, to Meghan, the dress is ill-fitting and so stiff. It looked like when she would sit down, it would go up, and her head would disappear inside. A different fabric and better fitting it could have been pretty. The veil was so over the top and very out of place. It just became ridiculous.
I have to admit, I never thought I would love one more than Catherine’s…and then I saw Pippa’s🤦🏼♀️. It was stunning. So I always say that Catherine’s is my favorite truly royal wedding dress and Pippa’s is my favorite “royal-adjacent” wedding dress. I can’t wait to see what little Charlotte wears in 20 years!!
I totally agree with you regarding Meghan’s veil. Nothing was cohesive, her smirk was just a bad vibe. Love love Catherine’s dress, it was the first royal wedding that I actually saw on TV. If MM was such Princess She-ra she could have got herself a wedding dress and not be dependent on the taxpayers money.
Catherine’s dress is stunning. I felt it suited her perfectly and loved the color under the dress! Catherine’s second dress was also perfection. That wedding was my drea, and I hope it was everything she dreamed of also. Eugenie’s dress has won me over. The back with no veil was perfect. Pippa’s dress was exquisite on her. Rajwa’s dresses were both exquisite. The ceremony dress was architectural and suited her so well. MM’s dress was hugely underwhelming and ill fitting. The veil absolutely belonged at someone’s wedding who wasn’t marrying for the 2nd or 3rd time, depending on who you talk to. The look The Queen gave her said it all! No brighter than ivory or off-white instruction was obviously ignored. Royal brides cover their shoulders in church. The flowers were another disconnect for me. The veil would have looked better had she used the blue carpet. The second dress was similarly unflattering. The look she gave Princess Charlotte as she passed was a total slip of the mask and shameful. I enjoyed the other’s weddings. Harry’s wedding felt like a joke in comparison to the others.
I have always heard that she wanted to wear the reception dress as a wedding dress, and was told no, you cannot show that much skin at a royal wedding. I think that’s why her wedding dress looks like shit and this one fits her perfectly she actually cared about it. Whereas the wedding dress she deliberately came up with new fitting ideas so that it would not be ready in time and she would have to wear the back up dress. You will never convince me that that was not her plan.
I have to agree–the Princess of Wales’ choice of wedding wear was nothing shy of timeless perfection and class. Hearing about how she had the symbolic flowers in the lace of her dress clarified to me exactly where Citizen Meghan got the idea to do that for her obnoxiously long veil. Princess Beatrice also had an extremely classy and beautiful dress. Eugenie’s dress was bland for my tastes but it definitely was tailored beautifully for her. Pippa looked gorgeous. I didn’t like the Jordanian princess’ choices. Her dresses were real life takes of cake toppers. Citizen Meghan…her dress was a very calculated costume. I’m convinced it was purposefully ill fitting. She wanted to appear as a victimized sacrificial virgin when she walked in that cathedral. She wanted people to see her as some young innocent being delivered into the hands of some kind of pre-arranged marriage in a dastardly cult of some sort. Check out her pics before the ceremony & after. Before she has that sacrificial virgin look plastered on on her face. After the ceremony, her expression dramatically changes to that of a devious strategist who just won their long game. She fluctuates between both expressions as she rides in the carriage later on. The length of the veil was meant to subtly remind viewers of Princess Diana’s iconic (and ridiculous) long train. The flowers she had embroidered on it I now realize were a copying of the Princess of Wales’ lace flowers on her dress. Citizen Meghan doesn’t do ‘original’.
Hi 👋 I agree 💯% with everything you said regarding the markle gown. Horrendously, hideously finished. It simply didn’t fit. And as you stated, that style had to be 100% a perfect fit. No room for error. I also agree with you on the balance between veil and gown. Neither had any connection whatsoever to the other. It has to have been that she was so rude, unpleasant and vile to the stylists that they just let her get on with everything she demanded and inevitably got it so drastically wrong. When I got married in the mid-80s, my Mom nagged me to get one of those super-high tulle puffs on the head, but I refused. I also hated those trendy mesh bodices with the embroidered “choker” and “bracelets”. For the last ten years, it’s been nothing but strapless, tight, mermaid dresses, they’ll look equally dated. Katherine knows what she’s doing, she kept it classic and perfect. Her dress is not datable, a hallmark of her excellent taste.
Beebs, wasn’t it you that showed, side by side, the dress that inspired MM’s ill fitting gown? I read an article from Vanity Fair that said, it was done on purpose, made loosely fitting in the waist because the fabric was stiff & she needed to be able to move. Hmm. I thought, then maybe a lighter, flowier fabric would have been a better choice. Smh. I like all the gowns except MM’s. Princess Diana’s gown was beautiful & different at the time & I thought it gave fairytale wedding vibes. It all seemed so romantic to me back then. Just my opinion, that all gowns will become dated because trends come & go. The POW’s dress is so gorgeous because it’s so perfect for her!! It may very well become dated some day but she’ll always stand out as elegant & feminine. Her & the other recent brides look so awesome because they’re dressed for their body type, something that MM did not do. She had every resource available to be a stunning bride. I don’t understand what happened that she was a disheveled mess. Just a sign of things to come I guess.
That last gown you pictured, square neck, long loose cuffed sleeves, a little more volume in the skirt with a chapel train would have been beautiful. The Commonwealth embroidery should have been on the gown, not that ridiculous veil. I love bridal veils and there is no reason she could not have one, but it needed to match the simplicity of the bandeau tiara.
When Megan first came into view I thought oh that’s classy pretty. The a few minutes later I could see more of it and I thought what did she do? Did she ditch the Designer dress? Did her designer dress get ruined and this thing was the only option? It didn’t fit correctly, the train was a joke especially with the dress, she did not look good! Looking back I think it showed exactly who she wanted to out do, who she wanted to be but could never measure up. Sorry but I had high hopes for her to be a breath of fresh air. I was waaaay off.
Princess Grace (not shown, but still…) and Princess Catherine’s wedding dresses are my favourites. Both were elegant, sophisticated and iconic. Princess Eugene’s reception dress is absolutely gorgeous. The whole Jordanian wedding was fabulous. Queen Rania is just fantastic. Regardless of the dress etc, Meghan’s behaviour spoilt her wedding. No family in attendance, except her mother, and she invited a whole lot of people she had no connection to.
I loved how Princess Beatrice used the Queen’s gown. Looks so much like a princess in it. The veil for Meghan is stunning, but would’ve been better had it been paired with a dress with a lot longer train (aka Princess Diana). Meghan’s dress definitely needed some type of texture to it – maybe some of the flowers that were embroidered on the veil could’ve been embroidered around the bottom of her dress.
I heard that she kept on changing her mind about the dress, & there wasn’t enough time to keep up with her erratic demands. I have also heard that she was supposed to wear a different dress, but changed into the one she wore at the last minute. It looks like a bed sheet or table cloth sewn together. And she’s all shoulders in her reception dress. The whole thing was dreadful. She didn’t even curtsy the Queen when her & Halfwit walked down the aisle. I have never seen a more ungrateful, rude, tacky person in my whole entire life. Plus she has crazy eyes . I still can’t believe that she was allowed to get married in that church when the King himself wasn’t allowed to marry Camilla there because of being a divorcée. She throws every nice thing anyone does for her in their face.
I loved Kate, Pippa, Beatrice and Eugenie’s dresses. The Jordanian princess’ wedding dress was great, but not a fan of the reception dress. Meghan’s wedding dress was lackluster and I preferred her reception dress to the wedding dress but there was just SO much fabric to keep up with at the reception in that dress.
I love that the Queen’s gown was worn by a loving granddaughter. Both women did that gorgeous gown justice. Catherine’s dress was a dream – perfection in every way. Meghan’s reflected Meghan’s taste in clothes that we’ve seen repeatedly: wrinkled, ill-fitting, inappropriate, and unflattering. It’s really a shame, because she’s gorgeous and has a cute figure. She could look so good, but misses the mark over and over and over again.
Agree with you completely! Really loved the back of Eugenie’s dress. Diana’s dress over-powered everything. M-ego dress total disaster (at one time in my life everything in my closet was sewn by me). To be respectful of the family into which she was marrying (and who paid $32M) an ivory dress with covered shoulders should have been the choice. Great comments on her veil! It was so ugly. The hair…yuck!
A note regarding the design of Princess Eugenie’s wedding gown: she specifically wanted her back to show. When younger, she had surgery to correct scoliosis and didn’t want her scar concealed. The back of her dress is quite beautifully designed and realizing it showcases her scar/her trophy for pain endured, makes the design even more approps and appreciated. Princess Beatrice’s redesigned masterpiece is so lovely! The dress has become a sweet, sentimental and beautiful storybook. Woven into the story of not only the reconstruction of HMTQ’s gown is the story of the Pandemic and how only 30 guests (?) could attend, and other obstacles, because of the “lockdown laws”. They seem to have taken each obstacle and made it a stepping stone. I love the peekaboo photo of Beatrice seemingly looking around the edge of the floral arch for her Groom; and it’s a heart tug photo of HMTQ and Prince Philip standing in the garden admiring their granddaughter. I admire Bee and and Edo for their thoughtful choices and how they stayed true to matters important to them for their wedding. People all over the world were have Zoom ceremonies and were being quite creative (weddings in the streets of Rome with neighbors supplying the music/singng from their apartment balconies, etc.*) This royal couple also had to cancel their arrangements (was it twice?) then perhaps decided it was time for the Marriage… and secretly proceeded with joy and love. Catherine’s dress made me sigh; Pippas made me squeal- she looked amazing; the Jordanian brides dress made me want to find a similar cut in a cocktail gown- just magical; The dress of Eugenies that made me swoon was her second dress- yummy divine-ness; and of course the Duchess of Egomania looked a hot mess as always- on purpose and I completely agree the veil was completely wrong. 🤦♀️And you look so lovely in that dress- maybe a talented seamstress could alter it???? (I know I know, but maybe?😜) Or if it’s that big maybe have it fashioned into a lovely blouse or skirt? 🧐 It’s too pretty not utilize somehow🥰
Allegedly, the pure white dress worn by MM was a big surprise to the late Queen. According to this rumor, MM was advised that pure white was not an appropriate color choice for her wedding gown because she had been previously divorced. (Pure white,, according to the late Queen, was not appropriate for a divorced woman.) A second off-white dress had allegedly been approved by the late Queen. Perhaps this alleged trick can explain some of the late Queen’s sour looks, the haphazard look of the dress, and the total incongruity between the dress and veil. It would be interesting to learn if this rumor is true. It sure would be great to see the other dress, if it exists!😢
In my humble opinion, Princess Beatrices’ gown was stunning and quite appropriate. It looked beautiful on The Queen, as it did on B, herself. Megan’s dress was just too blasé and what was she thinking with that train wreck of a veil? It was waaay too long and the material didn’t match the fabric of the gown. I would have cut it back, rounded it off and brought the length to about 7 foot, from the crown of the head to just a little ways past the train. 😊
Thank you, the details were new to me and impressed how well the most important dress Catherine would wear was a wonder down to the smallest details. Personally, I prefer a wedding dress or gown to be romantic in part and wonder about the continuing trend for strapless gowns. Meghan’s gown did not suit her figure or her height, my guess is this was supposed to be French-styling bringing sophistication with simplicity, exquisite haute–elegance, designed by Clare Waight Keller for the house of Givenchy, if I remember Givenchy is well known as the designer for Audrey Hepburn. The 3/4 length sleeves, they appear to be 3/4 length to me, is an awkward sleeve often. I think there is too little sleeve length for the bulk of the dress, mostly the skirt, not a graceful skirt at that, although someone must have told Meghan it gave her parity with Catherine’s waist (which is a genetic blessing). Meghan Markle lived in Toronto for several years, impossible not to be aware of the royal family, not even if living in the Northern Territories, on a cliff face, or the Yukon preparing for the Iditarod. Those remarks of Meghan do not require consideration. What Americans saw: In the United States these are just simple observations made perusal the M&H relationship from the beginning when the late Queen Elizabeth and the family altered protocols and traditions to provide Meghan Markle her personal choices along with the magnificent traditions of royal weddings. The peoples of the United Kingdom turned out in masses to celebrate the couple to welcome Meghan as part of the family, including a photograph of the couple on the late Queen’s offices.
I agree with your analysis of these wedding gowns. Me-again’s dress and veil were ridiculous. I agree with the queen, she should have had a small ceremony, she had been married before, and they hadn’t known each other for very long at that point. I’m old fashioned, I don’t think you should wear white and a veil if you’ve been married multiple times, what’s wrong with wearing an antique ivory, or cream, or even a very very soft silvery grey? Also just forego the veil and just have flowers, or a gorgeous hairdo with some sort of flattering headwear. Veils and pure white gowns are for new never previously married brides. I know it’s not the norm now. My sister in law is going on her 3rd husband and she spent over $10,000 on her wedding gown, veil and shoes. I would have rather thrown a nice reception and gone on a little getaway than on a dress worn once. Well, maybe she’ll wear it again for her next wedding.
My all time favorite royal wedding dress is Princess Grace. Classic and timeless are perfect words for Kate’s. She was aware that her image will be viewed long into the future. Diana’s was a wrinkled mess, but not as big of a mess as Nutmeg’s. She was still friends with Jessica Mulroney at that time. Either JM wasn’t a real friend or Jm has bad taste. Because a real friend would have said “girl, no”. But it’s also a strong possibility that JM did say “no” but Nutmeg ignored her.
What I will never understand is why Meghan chose a “white” dress. It could have been off white, but no, she wanted so badly to look pure and innocent. The fit was awful, and the dress itself so so so boring! The hair was a mess. Even the makeup was bad. I almost feel sorry for her. My favourite is princess Beatrice! I love everything about it. She looked beautiful and happy.
Catherine’s dress was exquisite, and Beatrice was beautiful – the choice of that dress and to get married with no fuss is definitely her best moment (considering her many fashion blunders where she websites her mother). Spot on analysis of Megan’s dress. Everything about it was severe including the hair pulled back like Wallis Simpson and that silly floating strand of hair. Plus it accentuated that she has no waist. Simplicity gone wrong in her case. Pippa’s was lovely and Eugenie’s was passable given her many fashion disasters.
Catherine’s dress was elegant, classic & timeless, Eugenie was beaming & looked beautiful but TW dropped the baby bomb which I’m sure broke her heart, Beatrice looked perfect & her Grandparents looked so proud. Sarah York’s dress was lovely & Princess Anne’s dress was perfect it reminded me of my dress, I got married in 1969, I think Anne was married in 1972. I’m saying absolutely nothing about the actresses dress, it’s not worth it. Many thanks xxx
My favourite of these gowns is Beatrice’s. I adore that she borrowed one of her Granny’s gala gowns – a Norman Hartnell, no less! It makes perfect sense that she couldn’t attend design meetings and gown fittings during the lockdown and, as a bonus, it was a high profile example of sustainable fashion. Not only were sleeves added (probably temporarily) but the hem was de-bubbled (check photos of the Queen wearing it in the Sixties) but, it appears that a deep piece of fabric was overlayed at the hem. My guess is that it was added to add length to suit Bea’s height and/or to cover damage to the original fabric. Catherine’s gown was delightful; I especially love how the skirt’s waist pleats opened up like flower petals. My only issue with her gown was that the bust was too cone-like. Eugenie’s gown was fabulous and I love the tiara she chose: the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik. This was the first time it had been worn/photographed in public since it was willed to The Queen Mother (she was Queen at the time) during WWII. Royal Jewel enthusiasts were ecstatic to see it and I love that she wore a good-sized tiara with coloured stones. I admit that I was hoping tiaras would be worn at KCIII’s coronation and that Eugenie would wear the emerald kokoshnik again. It suits her beautifully. The new Jordanian Crown Princess’s gown was a masterpiece and it perfectly suited her body shape and her training as an architect.
I love Catherine’s wedding gown even now, it’s just so beautiful and decades from now it will still be one of the most beautiful gowns ever. Pippa’s gown is also lovely, Beatrice’s gown is sentimental as it’s her grandmas and you can see the late Queen was really happy seeing her granddaughter wear it. Eugenie’s was nice, I just found it ordinary as I’ve seen this design several times, I guess. The worse wedding gown was M’s hands down. Ill-fitting and the fact that she disrespected the Queen even then by wearing a veil was an ominous sign of what’s to come. She copied her wedding dress from Princess Angela of Liechtenstein but there’s a big difference between them. Princess Angela’s wedding gown was beautiful and totally fit her and she’s a lovely princess that prefer to keep a low profile together with her husband, unlike M.
I love Beatrice and Pippa’s dresses. I like that Catherine’s dress fit her age. This was one of my issues with Meghan’s dress. It might be appropriate for a young virginal bride like Princess Diana. But a formerly married 35 year old shouldn’t wear that bright a white dress. I agree that the dress didn’t fit well. I feel like I can’t have an opinion on the style because it’s so inappropriately tailored.
After all these years I’m just gonna say it…Diana’s wedding dress was hideous…even for the time!!!! I remember being horrified when perusal the wedding and wondered what Charles actually thought of it. Yes, she was young and unsophisticated but she listened and learned and for the most part looked stunning.
Yes, definitely, Meghan’s dress and veil did not work together and the length of the veil was embarrassing. Meghan wearing a bright white dress was bad enough but then she had to wear a veil and not just any veil but one ridiculously long 🙄 My favorite dress was Catherine’s, a beautiful dress that fit her perfectly.
I agree with Katherine’s dress being eternal. I also love Eugenie’s dress for her. I usually like a little more embellishing, but her dress and the tiara were just perfect for her. Betrice’s dress was also perfect for her…and who didn’t want to make the Queen happy! I could just see her smiling so sweetly! And Pippa…do those girls have good genes or what? (I had to do the right thing and edit my last comment… self-editing can be enlightening, even at my age.)
Hi Beebs! With the dress Catherine wore to Pippa’s wedding, my understanding is that she wanted to wear something she’d worn before so that the newspapers would be less likely to make a big fuss about her. And with Meghan’s dress — indeed, a lot of her wardrobe — I’ve often heard that she really admired the look of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. The wedding dress certainly falls into this category, but as you (and so many others) have noted, the fit was atrocious! Oh, and: my favorite Royal wedding dress, by a mile, is of course Catherine’s. I’m surprised you didn’t mention how evocative it was of Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, though!
Catherine for the win! Pippa’s is my 2nd choice. Both dresses reflect the excellent taste of the wearer–and the lace was perfect for a springtime wedding. Love Eugenie’s gown but wonder if I would love it as much had someone other than Eugenie had worn the dress–her veil and tiara made that dress. I also loved the fabric of her gown–she married in the fall so the fabric was heavier and perfect of the time of year. Beatrice–she wins on a completely different level–the sentimental level. Her gown was fabulous for being her Granny’s and for being paired with the same tiara Granny wore for her wedding. Since it was during the pandemic Beatrice held a wedding very quickly and could not get a bespoke gown as the other brides featured–but she was able to turn to Granny for something unique and even more special. I also think her gown was perfect for her. As for coming last and it might be one of the worst wedding gowns I have ever seen–Megain’s dress was terrible. All wrong in every way, did not fit, and not at all flattering. Her veil did not match the gown but was stunning, especially the idea of having all the flowers representing the Commonwealth stitched onto the veil.
Meghan’s veil was ridiculous. HM the Queen had advised against it, as well as against wearing white… Catherine’s was stunning, there was nothing to criticise about every aspect of her appearance on the day. Eugenie’s was also very fitting to her, very pretty with a touch of drama, but clean lines and well fitted – and I really admired that she had that deep V at the back to display her scoliosis surgery scar.
Beebs, use a pin at the V in your dress (I speak from experience!) — It IS gorgeous! Thanks for the commentary – I was unaware of the Victorian details in Catherine’s gown, but now that you’ve pointed it out, I can see it. It is right up there with beautiful gowns. I also liked Grace Kelly’s and I did appreciate the re-purposing that Beatrice did. The person who put the sleeves on the dress did a fantastic job – if you didn’t remember that it was sleeveless, you wouldn’t have known.
Meghan’s dress was certainly forgettable. She favors the Bateau neckline which is getting way overplayed in her wardrobe. At least it was a A-line dress that wasn’t fitted at the waist which would have been disastrous on her since her waist is not suitable for accentuation. I agree, the veil was way too long and didn’t carry through with the theme of the dress.
Catherine’s dress was gorgeous but I’m a tad biased as I just love lace and embroidery. Simply stunning. Diana’s dress was unfortunately VERY 80s and though appropriate for the time, it just looks really dated and OTT now. I hate to say that as I do love Diana and her style evolution. Fergie’s dress was better. Beatrice’s dress was very pretty. I loved it. I love vintage and retro fashion though. As for Meghan’s dress. Firstly I was surprised she wore white. Champagne, cream, pale pink or apricot may have been more appropriate. I just thought it was very plain and drab, especially for a Royal wedding. And as Katy Perry said, she should have had one more fitting. Organising this wedding behind the scenes must have been a nightmare catering to Meghan’s demands. She also had the audacity to have all the flowers of the Commonwealth embroidered on her veil then went on to disrespect and misrepresent us on the world stage. My gut tells me that this was NOT the dress that the Queen saw and approved. I think it probably had something on it that related to this ridiculous long veil which was embellished with tokens of the commonwealth countries in the lace. I think this absolute monstrosity that she actually wore was a “surprise guys!” moment for her. I really do. She exhibits oppositional defiant behavior, along with malignant narcissism, and she probably had “help” and “guidance” from the Queen’s dressers, and couture dressmakers, but she went behind their back and chose this “modern” woman gown that clearly was rushed because she was not fitted properly. What gave me that impression was the look the Queen gave her when she sashayed down the aisle. It was screaming “YOU LIED TO ME GIRL”. Probably for months the Queen had seen the designs of the “approved” dress, and then BAM…fooled ya old lady. I did it MY WAY. That would be why the veil, which HAD to be the approved veil since it had momentos of the commonwealth countries around the edges (which is something the queen would love), but with this ridiculous gown did not fit. What is ironic, is that Meghan looked like a cheap bride wearing a clearance gown from a chain wedding shop.
You’re really great at analyzing fashion. I couldn’t figure out why I hated Meghan’s wedding dress so much. You are correct. The style of the dress is not consistent with the style of the veil. The dress fit is definitely atrocious but that is a given for her. Was it silk? Poor choice in that cut for that occasion. It shows every wrinkle and poor alteration problem.,The boat neck was also terrible in a wedding dress. And I think that extreme scoop was the worst for her broad shoulders. A neckline like that is too casual and it takes a certain figure to pull it off—it needs to be more deeply scooped and the wearer needs a bigger bust) —her figure is not it. And that flowing romantic-style veil! Whenever I see that ridiculously long veil, I think of all the poor people who had to labor over all that embroidery. I am sure she didn’t appreciate it and loved to think about all the people who had to make it for her. It just looks like she chose it so she could waste as much money as possible. One more thing for the peasants to talk about. A shorter plain veil should have been used. And maybe it is just my tv, but it looked like the white of the veil and white of the dress were different whites? The right cream silk and white tulle veil (without a totally cool undertone) can look good. Hers were mismatched. Her style sense is so unsophisticated! I am no fashion expert and even I can see she does not know how to dress. For her body type or the occasion. PS I think I remember reading that Diana’s dress was inspired by or a copy of one of Marie Antoinette’s.
Catherine took my breath away, legitimately. I couldn’t believe how absolutely perfect she looked. Man, what a successful choice! Choices for that matter. Princess Euginie also chose her dress so that it would show the surgical scars from her spinal bifida. ❤ She was proud of how she had successfully dealt with it all. Pretty cool. I LOVED Princess Beatrices’ choice. MM was a hot mess, as usual.
My favourite is Beatrice’s! Massive kudos to her for this idea, and also to whoever did this very beautiful and clever reworking of an original Hartnell vintage piece ❤❤ I was so interested to see what MM would have – and my expectations were high – but I was not a fan of her dress. It’s clean and simple but lacks ‘something’ 🤷🏻 I do love her Other Dress but the halter style is no friend to her shoulders. She looks very angular/bony. Like you, all I can see are pointy shoulders. Such a shame, as she could/should have been beautiful.
I like how you kept the critiques to modern weddings instead of comparing the Queen’s or Princess Anne’s dresses to modern aesthetics. A historical compliation would be lovely! The only thing I would have added would have been MM’s dress from her September 2011 wedding; it looked very similar to Catherine’s reception dress from five months earlier.
The veil was the only thing I liked about Meghan’s wedding look. If Meghan’s dress fit her better, I would have liked it better. Maybe she was going for a minimalist thing with her look but like you said, it needed to be perfectly fitted if that’s what she was going for. My favorite dress the one at the Jordanian wedding. I also really liked Catherine’s.
Beatrices dress was a storybook fairy tale and beautiful ❤️ Catherine was a stunningly elegant Princess. Meghans dress is the most wrinkled masculine wedding dress ive ever seen that it deserves it own mustache style named after it or something. Oh and since Catherine had embroidery of the national flowers on her dress, Meghan clearly had to try to top that with her absurd veil that was much longer than her first marriage.
Really enjoying your website and your good energy. Don’t lose ‘that thing’ after 100K subs! You explained the gowns very well so I understand what I had noticed but didn’t have words for. There is definitely a knack to seeing why something works in fashion. Catherine and Pippa are a great style tag-team. I agree Catherine’s dress is perfect for her body, her status, and the occasion, although I do personally prefer Pippa’s wedding dress (she is not the future Queen so she could have a breezier, fun, sexy look — and a great back always get me). Also agreed with your preferences throughout and with the Sarah Chatto comment below.
I loved the fabrics on both Catherine and Eugenie’s dresses. And Eugenie’s tiara was my favorite. I didn’t care for the collar portion of Catherine’s dress nor the V shapes embroidered into the lace on the upper bodice as they were too geometric for a gown with that beautiful floral lace. Eugenie’s sleeves could have been fitted better at her forearms and the neckline was too severe for my taste. I loved the linear pattern of the fabric of the dress’s skirt. Subtle with a big impact. Eugenie’s reception gown was my favorite between the color, how it flowed, the fabric. The furry bolero Catherine wore didn’t work well with her dress as it made and Meg’s was just a disaster. Reminded me of the prom dress Molly Ringwald’s character threw together in Pretty In Pink in the 80s. Meg’s look was a mess from head to toe. Messy hair mixed with a veil that didn’t match in color or style to the dress that was intended to be sleek and modern. The boat neck made her look very rectangular with no shape. I do think she probably irritated the daylights out of the designer and they just gave up on even trying any longer.
I had no preconceived notions about Meghan Markle before the wedding. All I knew is that she was an actress on a show I’d never heard of, that she was an American (like me) and bi-racial. Nothing more, not even that she was married before. I watched the wedding in real time because I now live in Ireland and was in the same time zone. When I saw her dress I thought there had to be something wrong with me that I thought it looked so bad because ‘surely she had access to the best designers and lots of money’! It looked awfu. And the veil was pretentious and tasteless. She had no business dressing as though she was marrying the heir to the throne when Catherine, who actually did, wore a much more subtle and tasteful veil. The Queen should have told her that she could not try to out-dress the future Queen.
It’s difficult to relate the impact of Diana’s dress. It was the fairy tale gown. I can clearly remember, just a day later, seeing a replica in a local bridal boutique window. This wasn’t in a large city, it was a backwater town in the middle of the north of England. It set the scene for every wedding gown of the decade. On another note, I might be the only person of the planet who thinks this, but I actually like Megan’s going-away outfit. I thought her dress, his jacket, the car, it all had a Hollywood, romantic vibe to it. I have no time for M+H at all but I do like that dress. Granted, I might be the only person on the planet!
Kate’s- timeless, beautiful, and romantic, Beatrice’s lovely, regal, vintage look that suited her perfectly, Eugene’s romantic, sweet fairy tale. Pippa’s not a Royal, but her dress was dreamy & beautiful, The Jordian wedding gown was regal and gorgeous (the first one) all the Royal ladies have looked amazing in their gowns with the only exception being Meghan- oversized, bulky frumpy fabric, badly cut, dull, ridiculous veil, jusr very unflattering. I will say her Stella McCartney gown at her reception was much better. She should have let Stella’s design be her wedding gown, she could have added sleeves to it. It was eon’s better. I don’t know if it was Meghan fault completely or the Givenchy designer;s fault, maybe a bit of both.
Katherine’s was fabulous. I loved Egenie’s too, showing off her scar from having scoliosis. Beatrice’s showed off a vintage style and resued a dress of her Grandma, which at a time of public having to isolate to stop COVID spreading, gave a nod to QE II and her service during WW II and having to use coupons to get her dress made as the country was still under rationing. Meghan’s looked unfitted and very drab, no details, pearls, lace etc but poorly fitted and that train was ooh a train wreck. Only the tiara was gorgeous.

I thought it was an absolutely huge, wrinkly mess. All I saw was the dress. The young beautiful woman with the wonderful figure was overwhelmed and lost in it. Loved Beatrice’s vintage dress and what a loving and kind gesture to her grandmother. The Queen looked delighted in the pics. Eugene’s was rather nice. Both Catherine’s and Pippa’s were gorgeous. Megan’s, well I think you said it all. I couldn’t get over how ” white” it was.
