They come in various forms, such as gel, cream, or liquid formulas, which fill in tiny creases and large pores. Primers can come in the form of a hyaluronic acid-spiked facial serum that boosts hydration, a sunscreen that protects, or a hydrating moisturizer to perfect the skin.

Primers can come in cream, gel, balm, spray, or oil, and are used before foundation, immediately after your skincare routine. They help smooth the skin, fill in lines and wrinkles, and create a less porous surface for makeup. Primers are used underneath eyeshadow, foundation, tinted moisturizer, and mascara to create a smoothing effect that enhances makeup coverage.
Primers are great for all skin types, with some being suitable for oily skin. They help to hydrate, smooth, and blur the look of your complexion to create the most effective canvas for makeup application.

This is a great article…thanks! I, too, just use sunscreen if I’m actually going to be in the sun for an extended period of time. I never used to, being naturally tanned. However, after giving birth to my son, I noticed that my face now tends to burn easily, but SPF 15 seems to do the trick. I’ve used Almay CC Luminous Primer, which has worked well for my sensitive skin. 😊
Thanks, Nina, for your information on primers. My favorite foundation is Estee Lauder double wear. Every time I use it, I get so many compliments. My problem was primers. You mentioned a few that I have and will be trying to use them together. Thanks for explaining sunscreen. I don’t like to wear it but living in Arizona you have to. I’m going to purchase the two you mentioned and see if I like them. My problem is that my skin itches wherever I use sunscreen and foundation, and it’s hard not to use when you have 9 months of summer. I can hardly wait for your next article.
I’ve tried a sponge and brush, but went back to my fingers because I noticed I can use less product and target coverage. I also really press the foundation into areas with pores (even if I use a pore filling primer) and the pores don’t show. I was really struggling until I gave up and did what worked 25 years ago. I only use one finger like you.

I have dry skin. But oily nose and I wear glasses I have tried using moisturizers in the past, before my primer and before my makeup I’ve tried both methods. It’s almost always turns or caky or melting off my face, almost immediately. So I am at a loss to what moisturizer and or what primers I should use. Would you have any recommendations for me?
Hi Nina, can you please suggest a primer for covering up cystic acne pores? I had cystic acne around 10 years back during my teenage which has left me with big pores and uneven skin which are visible even 6 feet apart. Honestly I have not tried any blurring primer which I would try now. Still wondering if that can fill up those pores.
