What Time Is Considered Formal For A Wedding?

A formal wedding typically involves a more formal style, with a dress code that varies depending on the time of the event. Morning weddings typically require casual attire, while evening weddings, especially those scheduled after 5 p.m., are considered more formal. A formal wedding is typically held in the evening, starting around 6 p.m. or a bit before, and continuing well into the night. For men, a morning coat, waistcoat, and grey or grey-and-black attire is required.

Experts recommend starting the ceremony between 10 AM and 3 PM to ensure a smooth affair. However, this depends on various factors, such as the season and venue. In Europe, it is more common for weddings to start early and end late at night. Semi-formal weddings feature no gowns or tuxedos and can include cocktail dresses, suit-and-tie styles, or flowy midi dresses and slacks with button-up shirts.

For men, formal attire consists of classy dark suits or tuxedos, while women’s attire is more focused on floor-length gowns, cocktail dresses, or fancy pantsuits. For a black-tie wedding, guests can wear anything from a long gown to a cocktail dress.

For a semi-formal or cocktail attire summer wedding, guests should dress somewhere between formal and casual. Darker colors for evening events and lighter colors for daytime nuptials are recommended. Formal attire sits between cocktail and black tie on the wedding dress code scale, slightly more elevated than cocktail attire and a touch less formal.

In summary, the time of a wedding directly influences the formality of the event.

Does formal mean floor length?

Women wear floor-length evening dresses to formal weddings. A cocktail dress is also appropriate, but if the bride is traditional, we recommend a floor-length dress. A full-length dress means the ankle is not visible. But we have more freedom now. Today, the formal hem can be one to three inches above the ankle. Formal dresses can also have slits up the side or asymmetrical hems. A shorter dress is more acceptable in summer or spring weddings because it’s hot. If your wedding invitation says “Black Tie Optional,” this is also formal. You don’t have to wear black. Black tie and formal events allow any color, but avoid white or silver dresses (don’t steal the bride’s spotlight). Formal weddings are a great excuse to get fancy. Go all out! Sequins, sparkles, bows, and trains are all OK on a formal dress. Puff sleeves are also coming back into style, especially off-the-shoulder.

When a wedding says formal?

You may also see it called “formal” on an invitation. While this is still an upscale event, men aren’t required to wear a tuxedo. A dark suit is fine. Women can wear a floor-length dress or a knee-length cocktail dress.

Is a 7pm wedding too late?

If your wedding is in spring or fall, your ceremony should start around 5-6 pm. The sun sets at 7:30 pm in the late spring and early fall, and at 6:30 pm in the early spring and late fall. Schedule your ceremony 1.5-2 hours before sunset, especially if there is no first look! Your summer wedding can go as late as 7 pm! The sun sets around 8:30 pm in the summer in Georgia, so we have time for sunset photos after the ceremony. If your wedding is in the winter (November-March), your ceremony should be around 3 or 4 pm. The sun sets earlier in winter because of daylight saving time. If you’re getting married in the winter, do a first look because the sun sets close to 5:30 pm, leaving your wedding in the dark. If you don’t want a 3 pm winter wedding, talk to your spouse about doing a first look. These ideas are based on a 30-minute ceremony. If you’re planning a longer or more religious ceremony, we might have to change things up! I’m here to help with timelines and planning a great wedding day.

The hidden dress codes. The golden rule is: Don’t wear white. Sometimes, when a wedding takes place in the summer, guests are drawn to their line of breezy ivory dresses. “I have a whole closet full of white dresses that don’t look bridal,” says one fashion editor. “But why wear one and hurt someone’s feelings?” Many agree, but there’s room to play. “If it has a print or motif that isn’t too overwhelming, then it’s fine,” says one writer. Don’t go too far. “After wearing a cream dress to a ceremony, people told me I’d never wear it to a wedding again.” If the dress code is confusing, play it safe. “I don’t know what to wear to a wedding at 5 p.m. Do I wear a day dress or something for the evening?” asks one fashion editor. If the wedding is at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., wear something that goes from day to night. After 6 p.m., wear something for cocktails. Is red still off-limits? “Red is fine, just don’t look like Jessica Rabbit,” says another fashion writer.

Paper matters. It’s simple: RSVP by the date on the invitation. If you don’t have a date, reply as soon as you can. What if there isn’t a response card? “Send your RSVP on your own stationery,” says an editor familiar with Emily Post’s Etiquette.

Plus one. The staff agreed: You can’t ask for a plus one. “You’re basically asking the couple to pay for another person,” says one writer. Plus-ones are sometimes underrated. “I’m single, but I want to go to a party with someone,” says one writer. A beauty editor agrees. “For my wedding, everyone gets a plus one.” If a couple can’t afford to invite many guests, they can offer a plus-one to everyone in the wedding party.

Black-tie weddings are a great chance to accessorize. Cufflinks on French cuffs look great with any tuxedo, says Andrew Roberts, CEO of Del Toro. For women, add sparkle to your outfit. Pearls or diamonds are the best way to dress up an evening gown, says Ranu Coleman, CMO of wedding fashion brand Azazie. If your wedding invitation says “black-tie optional,” you might be confused about what to wear. Black-tie optional guest attire is a mix of black-tie and formal fashion. You can wear a tuxedo or a floor-length evening gown, or a dark suit with dress pants and nice loafers. A knee-length or midi cocktail dress is also appropriate instead of a floor-length gown.
