The PetSmart groomers are paid by the hour. So, they are looking to do as little work as possible. We have a Goldendoodle and half the time we bring her to PetSmart they tell us she is too matted to brush her out. We then bring her to a local groomer who gets a percentage of the cost and she is happy to do it. We eventually stopped going to PetSmart.
My sister in law took their 4 year old Pug to PetSmart to get bathed and a nail trim. When she returned to pick him up, the dog was having problems breathing. She immediately took him to a 24 hour emergency pet hospital where they saved his life. The problem? Heat stroke. His temperature was 107 degrees! The doctors said if it had been another 10 minutes later, he would’ve died.
I took my dog there once and they clipped my dog’s nail way too short. It wouldn’t have been something I was mad at except they didn’t tell me. I didn’t know until I was in the car driving. I had black seats so I put down a beach towel so my seats wouldn’t show hair. I was at a stop light, looked in the back seat and there was blood all over the towel. I freaked out and almost cause a car accident. When I pulled over to look, I could see that the nail was sooooo short and that the blood was steady coming out. I held pressure and called the vet. They told me what to do and to not go back. From then on, she did not like her nails clipped. I took her to a groomer that owned his own shop and he took me through nail care to make her comfortable. I called Petsmart and told them. I was the angriest I’d ever been over the phone (not rude) and insisted that they tell people if someone did something like this. Things happen but communication is important.
My dog goes for a grooming at a different groomer. I almost took him to pets smart but I am so glad I didn’t. My dog was so badly abused, physically, verbally and starved so badly. When we rescued him he had blue and purple marks on his body like someone hit him and punched him, he had mange all his fur was completely gone. He had fleas, ticks and heart worms. Today he is 9 years old and he still has huge and gigantic trust problems with other people. When taking him to the groomers I always have to tell the groomers, be careful, be gentle and don’t be aggressive with him. I have taken my dogs to the PetSmart Flemington groomers starting in late 2018. They have totally restaffed their groomers with experienced and knowledgeable people. When grooming they give frequent updates, and even ask many questions about the dogs before grooming starts. They also thoroughly log and record everything they do when grooming the dogs and give you a copy once complete. One of my dogs, a westiepoo, has very bad anxiety, and they always be sure to take good care of him and make him feel comfortable, which is obvious by the way he acts when I pick him up. They groom out in the open so you can watch them do it. My two dogs always come home happy. My schnoodle gets very bad matted fur, and they are gentle when removing them. I feel terrible for the bulldog who died there, it’s an awful shame. I’m just glad the store took proper action and completely reformatted everything with their grooming policy and staff.
Not sure how this even happened because Petsmart makes us express groom or bathe all breathing challenged breeds including english and french bulldogs, boxers, pugs, and a few others. Petco is why I have to have my dog’s nails cut at a vet now . They cut his nails too short and made him bleed making him scared . I thought ok sometimes that happens it was an accident but when I gave them another chance it was a disaster . They said he started screaming and supposedly tried to nip the groomer and they muzzled him to cut his nails ! I couldn’t believe it, It was horrible and he never goes there anymore . It’s taken a long time but he now is comfortable with my vet tech and isn’t scared anymore . Supposedly they stopped muzzling dogs but they never should have done it to begin with !
i took my dog to pet smart once for grooming and the lady put their collar and leash on my dog and put it too tight that it was choking my dog. my dog couldn’t breathe properly and was coughing because of how tight she put the collar. and my poor dog was whinning to back to us and she kept dragging him by the neck and choking him even more. she kept doing this to a point where my dad told her to let go of the leash and checked my dog to see how he was and have it back. the think is if we say smth to the ppl ab how they r harming our dog they could get mad and show it on the dog. who knows what the do inside that room. and on top of that they keep the dogs in little crates till they come to the dogs turn so i was scared my dog would choke so bad he would faint. after that my dogs been rlly scared to go back their. he is an extremely friendly dog but when he goes there he gets scared and angry. he is just 5 months old :((
Stuff like this shouldn’t happen but there are so many good employees as well. I’m a bather at petsmart and let’s say a nervous dog comes in but it too old or breathing challenged for a kennel dryer but is terrified of the velocity dryer. I’ll towel dry and brush the dog until it’s dry and even sit on the floor to make the dog more comfortable instead of putting it on the tables
I worked for Petsmart 10 years as a groomer.They would just take anybody off the street and hire them to bathe and dry dogs..No one including me was put in a grooming school.I was taught by an experienced groomer there ..hands on and just experimenting on people’s pets until i learned.i saw horrible things and I complained to deaf ears.I needed the money and I did a kind and careful job.But it got so ugly and sad. I quit after 10 YRS.i wouldn’t take a pet there for a million dollars.Alot of Veterinary Clinics groom.i would feel safe going there.

“Putting the brakes on” when a dog goes to be groomed is not a red flag. Common sense and anyone who understands dogs can tell you that dogs don’t like to be bathed and groomed and have their nails cut by some person . The whole process is stressful even with the most gentle groomer . Get to know your groomer. Follow them on Facebook, it’s very easy to tell if someone doesn’t have the right temperament to be a dog groomer . Dog grooming successfully takes a ton of patience and more importantly an understanding of why the dogs are behaving frightened or stressed out . I’m a dog groomer . I absolutely LIVE for dogs . 85% of the dogs that come to me are not happy they are about to be groomed . The important thing to note is how they behave toward me AFTER their groom. They follow me around for treats and play with me . There is no fear. It hurts to hear someone say that a dog not enjoying the grooming process must be a red flag . Nope . But you will know in your heart if you pay attention . And stop sending your dog to every groomer that’s on sale . Keep a consistent person because that helps your dog to understand what is happening and the whole process is smoother for them
not gonna lie, petsmart is stupid with their training they want them to be patient, take their time, etc yet each pet is “timed” by the moment they’re checked in and each groomer is rounded by the end of the week for how many sales they could get and by the least amount of hours per dog 🙄they want their sales up and give each groomer a report on how many they take in a day and how fast they can do it… the more add ons, the more dogs and the least time on each dog gets praised and whoever is “slow” has to be “coached” or view more articles
No chain places/stores please! I live in Orange County and their are many places that are so welcoming and great! My dog always comes out happy. Your dog will let you know but the way they come out. Please be mindful. If you don’t like the lady or sir for being to “cocky” or “clock in clock out make money moves” then don’t put your dog in their hands. Be with someone who will be like “now who’s this little guy!!! Louii hi! How are you buddy!” Those people are more genuine
WTF?! This is the 3rd story I’ve heard in 2 days regarding dogs being killed at either Petsmart or Petco. FOUR dead dogs at the same location from GROOMING in a cpl months time?! “Groomers” need to have some type of certification. Letting any joe or jane cut nails, wash + handle other people’s babies is asinine! This needs to stop asap. My heart goes out to the dog’s owners ❤
I’m appalled and disgusted. As a Senior Student Majoring in Vetinary Science at TCTC I’m highly disgusted. There are many things to do to keep a dog safe. No matter what there should always be 2 people on a dog this allows team work and Help restraining the dog safely. Another thing be with the dog at all times dont think about getting the dog from the kennel until table is fully ready. Also keep one hand on the dog this allows you to stay table side and not let the dog fall off the table. Also ask the owner if there are any concerns about pet health or safety then put the info to use
I had one of my parakeets die during a grooming. I had taken the pair for grooming after they had had a clutch of babies. Mom made it through and Dad was almost done when I saw my coworker look like she had seen a ghost and my Emmanuel died right in front of me. Please if your parakeets have just finished having a clutch wait to have them groomed. I couldn’t work at the place after.
“Pre-existing Conditions?” WTF!!! Grooming done right should be something the Dog looks forward to once acquainted with the groomer. My dog came back with a raw spot on top of his nose and could not poo after the groomer the last time. I think I found the answer. He probably was trying to get out of the drying cage due to overheating. I am not taking him back ever again.
I wouldn’t leave my children with a stranger, so why would I ever consider leaving my dogs with a stranger? That is what Family Physicians, Vets and Groomers are. Ask yourself: Have I ever been in their home? Have them in my home? How well do I know them? Do I socialize with them outside of their workplace? If you answered no to one or more of these questions, they are strangers. Don’t leave your children and pets with strangers.
This is why we stopped going to pet smart for grooming. When we still took her there a long time ago when she was still getting groomed there, the person who was grooming my dog was like “oh she bit me” and my family was like, she would never do that! She is the sweetest thing ever. Ever since that day she is scared of the sound of nail clippers and we are thinking they accidentally hurt her. We don’t trust pet smart for grooming anymore. We only go there for health stuff now.
If you have an anxious pet DO NOT take it to get groomed. If you are an anxious pet owner DO NOT take your dog to get groomed. If you plan on taking your dog to the groomer START YOUR PET AT A YOUNG AGE. Don’t take your pet every 2 or 3 or 4 months. You need to take your pet to get groomed the proper amount of times it takes for the specific breed. Keep your pet brushed out if you have a poodle, doodle, or anything that requires brush out. Not saying pet smart didn’t mess up… a dog should not fricken die while getting groomed, but please be aware of your pets health before sending it off on such an invasive process. Grooming your dog is handsy, wet, and LOUD!! If your dog has never been to the groomer and it’s already grown, you are setting it up to get freaked out!!
the first time my dog was groomed she was 12 weeks old. we took her to petsmart and they flat out told us that “her hair was way to tangled so we just held her down and ripped the fur out with a brush. she was loud the whole time too”. now she bites everyone and is extremely scared of the groomer. never to go petsmart for grooming!
After one of my dogs mini schnauzer was cut and really needed stitches which it didn’t get because i was away and my mother took her in. When I saw the next day I was upset. Now if I can’t stay with my dogs I trim them myself not perfect but they are safe. Some groomers just hurry thru trimming and don’t take the real time needed. Mom said she was standing still until she was cut. Then mom ended trimming. Brought her home. Years later and she still doesn’t like trimming. I use scissors mostly on her.
I like Petsmart for the fact that they sell pet supplies but I would never use them for grooming, daycare or boarding. I work at another dog daycare and their setup compared to ours is just sad. The Petsmart daycare I saw had windows from the daycare into the store and all the dogs looked bored and sad. Employees wouldn’t even let the dogs wrestle, probably out of fear of someone getting hurt or a fight breaking out. I was the same way before I was properly trained at a reputable daycare on what is and is not okay play for dogs

I work at a vet with an in house groomer. It helps that all her grooming dogs are clients of the doctor as well and we know their medical history. Our wonderful groomer has had to deny people’s dogs getting groomed because we informed her they had a condition that could make getting the dog stressed to much very dangerous, while the owner didn’t tell her anything. Certainly, not all groomers are good and wholesome mom and pops, but it’s likely these animals had underlying health conditions that made it so they should not be put in a stressful environment, but the groomer doesn’t know
Pet stores NEED TO ONLY sell pet supplies and food. NO MORE GROOMING or selling live animals. Support your local loved groomers. I paid so much at a petco groomer when I was younger and getting my dog groomed the first time. Luckily my experience they just barely cut his fur at all so I was refunded and he was fine health wise but I then started becoming aware of the this commercial chain pet shops and grooming and breeding and found us a local groomer whom is so wonderful. Sooo sweet with all animals. I’ll just stop in randomly to make an appointment and they are always in such a good mood and the dogs are always so happy chilling getting groomed. My heart is broken I’m moving out of state and won’t have them anymore. They get my dogs nails the perfects length short enough so he’s not bothered but long enough to not draw blood and make it hurt which honestly I’m impressed because all the times hes had his nails trimmed never got them short enough to be comfortable. He is the happiest dog ever leaving there and literally a dog that use to try to bite me if I would cut his names can’t wait to get in there he literally runs to them so happy which is such a relief knowing he’s in good hands and he likes them. For every roach you see there are 10 that you don’t. So for every dog or cat that has been caught getting abused at Petsmart there are 10 other ones that nobody knew was being abused there. Unlike kids, dogs and cats can’t verbally tell you what just happened to them. You really have to pay attention to the way they act if you take them back. That’s the only way to know that something is happening to them that you don’t know about.
I’m a certified groomer trained at Nash Grooming Academy. I graduated in 1998 and now run my own shop. In the 22 years since I’ve never had a dog die or be seriously injured except for the occasional cut quick. If trained properly and the correct amount of time is taken nothing close to this should ever happen.
I agree with many that are saying groom your dog yourself. But as one ages it’s really not possible. I take my lab to our local Pets Mart just for a bath and nail trim. But I don’t leave. I watch and stay. When they take her back in after five minutes I ask how she is doing and to bring her out even if she is still wet. Then they just cut her nails in front of me. I finish towel drying her at home. Do not leave your fur baby there and go do other things. Then its likely Groomers will just kind of move to the next animal. If that Groomer knows the owner is still perusal chances of mishaps are less likely. And You have some control. I suggest that fragile breeds not go to PetSmart.
I agree with you on the PetSmart problems, but that does not mean that every single groomer is abusing the pet that is being groomed and hurting it. (Yes I am well aware that Petsmart has had animals die while they are grooming them.) There are SO many responsible and good groomers out there, just because Petsmart has killed pets while they are being groomed, (I am NOT agreeing with what they did, I think it is absolutely horrible and they need to be sued. A lot. I am so sorry for the ones who have lost their dogs from horrible groomers.) doesn’t mean that all groomers in the world are going to mistreat your pets and hurt them. I am in a dog grooming shop from 8 in the morning until 4 or 5 in the evening from every Monday to Saturday. My mother owns a dog grooming business, and has been doing it for 33 years now. There are 5 people working in that shop almost every day, and I have never seen a dog ever get injured. A LOT of times, dogs like to move around a lot, and try to avoid getting brushed and groomed. Which is why it makes it so hard for the groomer to not get a little mad, and correct the dog by saying it’s name in a firm tone and adjusting its head back to the normal position. I am NOT saying that the footage of the lady in Petsmart grooming the dog was doing the right choice, because it wasn’t the right choice. (The one where she was pulling the head back way too harshly because the dog didn’t like it.) If you have a pet, please, I suggest you don’t take it to Petsmart to get GROOMED.
I STOPPED going to groomers,I have a toy poodle,I too had problems with their grooming.Also most every groomer,one left another toy poodle,elderly,now passed,in a cage for 8 hours,and he had a set appointment,the groomer was just a nut job.I now groom my own toy poodle at home where he is safe.I have gotton quite effective at his grooming,by doing it over and over,and perusal articles.

They had no idea how to groom my breed! Plus he was anxious like I had not seen before, when I picked him up. I have used private groomers since. Sadly no dog for me since I’m working too much. This is a clever PR piece more for Pet Smart than against Pet Smart. 1st: They have to open with animals that die at the Pet Smart Groomers. They have to do that since this clip is a phony Pet Smart PR piece designed to answer the many abuse allegations against Pet Smart in the news, on social media, and in the courts. 2nd: They introduce doubt as to how those doggy’s died at Pet Smart. 3rd: They then generalize Pet Smart’s abuse, doggy injuries, and deaths onto groomers in general as if it is common. 4th: They end with a Pet Smart groomer holding the head of a doggy some what forcefully to cut its head hair. Much like maybe a parent might do to cut their toddler’s hair who was not being cooperative. But that specific article gone viral online shows that Pet Smart groomer being much rougher – mean /abusive to that poor lil doggy – violently jerking that poor innocent lil doggy around by its ears and such. This clip is more a clever PR piece to minimize Pet Smart’s negligence than to highlight it. Shame on you NBC Today Show.
I took my dog a few times to PetSmart for grooming and after one of those appointments he never wanted to go back, he’d scream if we got near the salon in the store and if we went in he’d shake like crazy. So I never took him back, I don’t know what they did to him, but they must have done something because before that one time he was always fine and the groomer. He loves going to the vet and they give him shots and stuff, so I’m not sure what PetSmart did to terrify and traumatize my dog.
A lot of groomers use the drying cages. This allows them to do more dogs they rough clip and wash and put in cage to dry and start another dog and do the same and return to first one to complete and do finishing. I as a groomer never used these cages I had dry them all. I did it because I loved doing it not to be on a production line.
Learn how to groom your dog. I would NEVER trust anyone, unless I personally know them. It’s not a pretty job, a lot of these animals FIGHT toe and nail in these circumstances and if the groomers have no personal connection or love for the animal, they can lose their temper and treat the animals horribly. Not all Groomers of course, but it’s always a possibility!
You gotta know the groomers if you get a bad vibe don’t go there or ask for someone else!!!! I’m a groomer of 13 years n I won’t ever hurt your family member!!! I love dogs!!! I hate that one bad groomer makes everyone who is a groomer look abusive!! Trust n believe I am a great one! Your dog would love me!!! You would too!!!! I’m the happiest loving groomer!!!
This is why you should go to a place that specializes in grooming not some big company like PetSmart or Petco They don’t actually care they’re just a big money making company And I see a lot of suffering animals that PetSmart and Petco sell like lizards and stuff and they are not properly taken care of at all I think that’s such an inexperienced place PetSmart and Petco should just stick to pet toys and treats not grooming and pet selling services they’re clearly not qualified
Several groomers here curtly rebuke owners wanting to witness the grooming as if the only way to witness is via owners physical presence that distracts their doggy and encourages misbehavior. To you groomers have you ever heard of remote cameras, or one way mirrors, if the owner has not yet sufficiently trained their dog to sit, stay and such. In the latter case that could make it less traumatic for the doggy, and easier, not harder for the groomer. Really the best solution is for lazy assed owners to learn how to groom their own pet. There are classes, books, and You Tube articles etc. It can be a minor challenge, but it’s not rocket science either.
I have bad experience with groomer, my toy poodle was bold because of hot clipper that burn the skin, and the hair is stop growing, she change behavior from a happy go lucky girl to fearfull little doggy, dont want to be touch or held, always hide in her crate all the time, and if we hold her she shaking nonstop,how I know is because I take a grooming class, so I can groom my 4 dogs my self, because I dont know why my dog is so fearfull and becoming bold after last grooming, the groomer use hot clippers and care less, it just like he iron my dog skin!!! But too late to sue them because they close the shop maybe somebody sue them.
Really what are people supposed to do no ideas come on …….cut your baby’s hair yourself it’s not that complicated and if he has to have a certain cut look it up on the thing we are on now which is YouTube and teach yourself how to do it my entire life have had two babies and looking for third pup never once have I taken them to get their haircut by a groomer their are kits for nails hair every thing it’s not that hard and not too complicated you can’t trust anybody any place with a special life like a puppy dog and if you truly loved your dog then you will learn how to do it not hard to do trust me
My wife saw a groomer been completely inappropriate with a small dog in the Petsmart .. she called the manager and she threatened to report them to the police the next time we went back to the Petsmart they had put some sort of bubbles on the glass that disrupts the view from the pet owners into the area where they are actually grooming the dogs that’s how they fix the problem making sure that we can’t see what they’re doing in there.
I have an old small dog who is very aggressive. Has bitten me a few hundred times, bitten countless children, adults, mainly children. I have to keep him away when kids are over. When my sister was four way long ago he hit her face and she had to get seven stitches. Why? Petco. We took him to get him groomed. It had been almost seven hours and we heard no work from them- so we called, the woman who was 18 YEARS OLD and had zero license for grooming CUT his ear. She was scared so she didn’t called for five hours, tried to superglue it back together HERSELF. by time they got him to the vet the vet had to reopen the wound with no pain meds, and stitch the ear back together.
It’s the groomers not necessarily Petsmart. We must realize there are people in every field of work that are only there to collect a check. Some people are horrible at what they do. You have some people that love what they do and it shows. Those are the people we appreciate. My heart goes out to the pet owners who trusted these groomers with their pets only to come back and they’re deceased.😔
Learn to groom yourself, take classes to teach you or hire a mobile groomer that allows you sit in the truck during the whole groom with your furry friend… If they won’t then don’t hire them. You should also be allowed to sit and stay in a shop and be able to see the grooming area… It’s a lot for your pet to endure in one sitting, and definitely no cage drying!
These dogs are really strong and the dogs that died I feel sad and bad for them.PetSmart should groom.Dont be dumb.You just killed 47 dogs because you didn’t groom you people,but I don’t want to be mean.What does grooming even mean anyways?I Wanted to be a veterinarian when I grow up,and I still am so I can help animals another way instead of killing or hurting them.
The company itself cares for its animals and workers. They dont use any kind of mills (reptile, dog or any of such.) However city by city that can change. My petsmart takes time to do things right and we go through a lot of training. I know it sucks but sometimes dogs just die. She may have died while at petsmart or at home.
