I’ve moved here 4 months ago and I get mesmerized every time I see Mt Rainier on my way to work when it’s sunny. It just brings a smile to my day seeing so much nature around. I have visited local beaches like Juanita beach, Shoreline, Madrona beach. Volunteer park is just an amazing place to watch the city at sunset. This place is amazing! Walking the city and it’s diversity is at another level.

As a Seattle native, we are known for our coffee and I promise Starbucks isn’t the best place to get coffee here! Try Allegro in U-District, Espresso Vivace in Capitol Hill, or Cafe Ladro by the Convention Center. It makes me sad when I see these articles of people recommending visiting Starbucks when coming to Seattle when we have so many good local small cafe’s that have way better coffee 🙁
This is a delightful article! This September will mark 10 years since I got to visit the US. Between that and the lack of recent travel due to covid I am very much in the mood to reminisce. Seattle was definitely a highlight of that trip. For a place with a reputation for rain we lucked out and had beautiful sunshine all the days we were there. Just a super cool city. As a coffee-addicted person, would Iike to add some of my favorite coffee spots Victrola / Ladro / Vivace / Elm coffee / KEXP / Anchorhead (plz try their waffle !) / Armistice coffee etc. Starbucks reserve in Caphill is great to visit but way too hyped and not a good compared with other local coffee brands IMAO.

Thank you for the many tips! Just completed a 3day city-trip and was able to cover many suggestions – Salt & Straw and Top Pot Doughnuts –> wow! Would definitely also recommend taking the water taxi to West-Seattle, rent a bike at the nearby shop and cycle towards Alki beach and further for great views of the Olympics. Flew from LA, so also followed your tips on where to sit on the plane to get a good look at Mt. Rainier – impressive.
I’m an LA native and after graduating college during covid, i decided i wanted to move out of state. It was between Seattle or Chicago and I chose Chicago for my career. This was such a great, thorough article. I moved to Seattle from LA for all the reasons you mentioned here. The city really is a perfect balance of city and nature. People here can always tell I’m from California because I still say “the 5” instead of, “I-5” or “the 90” instead of, “I-90”. Lol. One of my favorite breakfast places is Portage Bay. They have great, fresh farm-to-table food. Plus vegetarian and gluten free options. For brunch, Joli in the Phinney Ridge area is good. And of course, there’s Greenlake park for paddle boarding and such!

It will be our first time visiting Seattle and my first time near the PNW since 1998 when me and my family visited SF! 😳 (My mind is still blown from seeing your article… It’s pure 24K Gold!) 💪 So we will be there for a couple of nights as we’ll actually be going on an Alaskan cruise out of Pier 91 (I believe it is?) As it will be a week. Up til now I have wanted to go back to San Diego as me and some friends did a two week road trip almost 6 years ago from Houston, TX (the area me and my wife are currently from) to Los Angeles, CA spanning 7 different cities. Love this!!!! I’ve lived in the area for 5 years now and it’s beautiful! The one spot I would add is there’s a great little coffee shop called Moore Coffee. It’s near Moore Theater in downtown Seattle. At this coffee shop, they have INCREDIBLE latte art! They create animal latte art and it’s a super fun spot to take people to so you can see all the different animals they create for you.
Check out Ballard Locks and all the boats going from Lake Union to the Puget Sound. Then walk over the Locks to the other side and follow signs to Discovery Park – it’s a great easy hike that will end with views of the Sound. Kelly this was one of the best Seattle articles I have ever seen. Really well done
Great article with lots of variety! Volunteer Park has great views (though not sure the water tower is open), the new Nordic Museum is supposed to be wonderful (hope to check it out soon), the MOHAI, the boat locks/salmon ladder in Ballard. And if you’re visiting without a car but want to get out to some trails, the “Trailhead Direct” is back this year (was closed last year due to COVID)… you can catch a bus from Capitol Hill, Mt. Baker, and a few other stops that takes you right to the trailheads at Mt. Si, Poo Poo Point, and others. And it’s $2.75 each way! Rent some gear at REI if you need and head on up!

And quadruple thumbs up for mentioning the airplane views, I always get a window seat to enjoy seeing my city and the surrounding area from above. I flew there in June for a funeral from here in Seoul… the plane was only 1/3 full, of course, with pandemic restrictions. But hardly anyone was looking out the window in the last 30 minutes arriving to Seattle. I wanted to let everyone know what an amazing view they were missing! How often can you see views of a city from above like that? The Olympics were crystal clear, and the rest of the city green (a few weeks before the heat dome). Anyway, keep enjoying lovely Seattle ~
That was an awesome article and so interesting the Seal of changes going on in the city. I lived there from 1979 until 2008 so I am familiar with some of the places you mentioned of the names of changed in a lot of things have popped up recently. I work downtown for over 10 years so I remember a lot of the little nooks and crannies. Have you seen the waterfall park over in Pioneer Square? That’s a cute place, also freeway park near the convention center. The library is a pretty interesting art piece as well as functioning Library. Benaroya Hall has some of the most amazing classical symfuhny shows as well as Fifth Avenue Theater. And you can’t go to Seattle without eating at Taco Time that has to be on the list! The Portland one is not the same it has to be the Seattle version. I have so much that I remember I could share but thank you so much for updating me! Big hugs 🙂
You can’t leave out Temple Pastries, and Raised Doughnuts for pastries. Don’t forget about Milstead & Co for Coffee, The many amazing Ethiopian Restaurants in the Central District (Ras Dashen being my personal fav). Seattle Fish Guys for really solid Poke. Senor Moose & Fonda La Catrina for amazing Mexican brunch. And finally Canon for some amazing cocktails.
I followed these suggestions almost to a T and I had an amazing experience in Seattle. I stayed at the citizenM Pioneer Square hotel, which is right next to the pier near Iver’s and very close to Pike Place Market. Highly recommend. In regards to the Lime Scooters, or any of the other rentable bikes, I recommend downloading the app for one or two of the ones that are around the city. I decided to rent a scooter when I was standing by the Space Needle and my service want awesome. It cost me about 15 dollars to ride from the Space Needle to the citizenM hotel. I also highly recommend taking the link light rail back and forth to places. I took it to University of Washington a couple times. The campus is gorgeous and a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Starbucks Reserve was one of the highlights of my trip in regards to food and drink. You have to go here. This guide was spot on and helped make my trip the most memorable one I’ve had. Thanks for putting this together! And the construction has made significant progress since this article was made. It’s starting to look great.
Thank you for including Udistrict and Cap hill. Most of these WHAT TO DO IN SEATTLE articles only talk about Downtown and Pike Place Seattle has soooooo many other places that are less crowded. I’ve been here since 2009 and have yet to go to any tourist-y landmarks cuz its always way too overwhelming and busy. I absolutely recommend the Wallingford/Fremont/Ballard areas as well! Many awesome local shops, boutiques, dive bars, eaterys and fun venues to check out.
The smith tower is one of the oldest and most unique buildings in downtown Seattle. They have opened up a nice bar lounge area on the top floor of the building. Worth it though for a special night. My favourite venue besides Neurmos (which you have mentioned) is the showbox, hopefully that one will be active soon if it is not already. As far as parks, there are so many amazing ones in the area. My favor that are not strictly downtown would be Volunteer park in capitol hill (there’s an old water tower there that you can go inside has an amazing view), Greenland park ( great for jogging around or renting a paddle boat with a friend), and Caramel park ( a nice jog on wooded trails down to the sound)

Oh,my, you make me homesick. Now when I miss Seattle I will just go on your vlog. I think you should show the shopping malls. One of my favorite’s is Bellevue and also the square there. The other thing I think you could mention is Woodland Park Zoo. It is one of the top zoo’s in the Nation. Also, there is Northwest Trek. This is a natural animal preserve with people there that give lectures and show kids all the different ways that the animals in this part of the country live. Also, you might show them the Hydro Plane races and talk about SeaFair That is one of my favorite times to visit. I marched in many of the Seattle Parades. One thing that is unique is that they do a daytime and a NIGHTTIME parade. Sure hope they still have those. The last place I think you should show is Alki Beach and Salt Water Park. Both of those places are unique because you can be at a beach but you are in the city. HOpe that helps.
You would have loved Seattle in the ’90’s when grunge ruled the land. I saw (5/1/94) Pearl Jam and Neil Young at the location now know as Neumo’s. Was Mo’s Mo’s Rockin’ Cafe. Saw Soundgarden at The Show ox at the Market. No homelessness, affordable everything. I’ve moved to Idaho due to the current social/political mess… but, this recap made me miss home. Some other places to visit are The Locks in Ballard, Bruce Lee and Brando Lee grave site on Capitol Hill, Seattle Chinatown International District, Sky View Observatory-Columbia Center in Downtown Seattle, Underground Walking Tour, The Troll in Fremont, Olympic Sculpture Park! I want your apartment. 😮 I’ve lived in this area for (closing on) ten years and I concur with everything you said. I would add to the eat and drink list: * Rumba on Pike St. near the convention center for tiki fun * Navy Strength on 2nd Ave for more tiki fun (look, you can’t have too much tiki fun, amiright?) * Jupiter Bar also on 2nd Ave for those who enjoy classic pinball with an adult twist, so much fun!!! * Umi Sushi on 1st if you’re feeling that sushi craving coming on, the quality is high and the dinner rolls are large * For some reason we have an abundance of crawfish boils (I haven’t figured out why). Crawfish King in the international district, and Crawfish House on 16th are just phenomenal. * And of course Seattle style teriyaki. Please give my love to Okinawa Teriyaki on Western Ave. Wow. Just.. Wow! But to be fair to everyone, teriyaki is quintessential to Seattle and you should try multiple locations because, despite the name, there isn’t just one style.
I love seattle..lived on Capitol hill in 1970 through 1975…next article mention the Chittenden locks, UW arboretum, and volunteer park…the museum of Asian art was the Seattle art museum then…also the green house and water tower…the paramount on pine st…and if you like restaurants with lots of plants,you would have loved a hot spot on broadway that was named Boondocks, Sundeckers,and Greenthumbs 😁♥️
