This guide explores the dos and don’ts of homecoming dresses, ensuring you make a stylish and appropriate impression. For a hipster or unconventional semi-formal look, consider adding suspenders and a bow tie to your outfit. Dress pants and a button-down shirt are also necessary for the occasion.
For more formal homecomings, look for dresses with minor beading around the top or bottom, not all over. Slim gowns with one sleeve, long sleeves, or no sleeves can be suitable. Men typically wear short dresses to homecoming, as long formal dresses are saved for prom. Tight-fitted short dresses with detail are acceptable, while dress pants with pockets or fully beaded short dresses can be worn.
Dressing for homecoming can be stressful, but there are many options available. For a “Through the Decades” theme, consider dresses with ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s influences, such as groovy, psychedelic prints, disco-worthy metallics, and bright hues. Touches of fabric like satin or tulle, neon colors, ruching, oversized shoulders, and puff sleeves are always a good idea.
For a chic and sophisticated outfit, layer a jacket over your dress, dress coats, jackets, shawls, wraps, and shrugs. Two-piece prom dresses come in various designs, and wearing a bolero over your dress is a good option.
Homecoming dances, winter formals, charity balls and galas, New Years Eve parties, and wedding receptions are some of the places to wear your prom dress again.

What is the dress code for homecoming?
Homecoming is typically a more relaxed event than prom. Students attend with either a date or with a group of friends. The dress code is semi-formal, and teenagers wear things like cocktail dresses, button-downs, and slacks. Schools may have different requirements for the occasion, but the biggest difference between homecoming and prom dress codes is that homecoming dresses are shorter, hitting above or just below the knee.
Proms are more formal than homecoming, with more rules and traditions. Teenagers attend as couples, and the dance is limited to either juniors, seniors, or both, based on the size of the school and what part of the country youre in. Schools encourage wearing formal attire like long evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits. Prom dresses are typically floor-length and can be found in a variety of silhouettes and colors.
However, homecoming and promdoshare some traditions. One example is the exchange of corsages and boutonnieres before the event, usually when one is picked up by their date. Crowning the king and queen is also an exciting moment for both occasions. Asking someone to be your date for the event also became a tradition of its own.Homecoming proposals have become more complexand extravagant in recent years, borrowing from the grandeur of promposals (prom proposals). These gestures are often posted on social media, and—in most cases—the grander they are, the more shareable.

But remember, there are always nuances! The outfit Im wearing at the top of this post has a longer midi dress and a longer coat, but I think it really works because Im wearing the coat open and you can see the full length of the dress and not focus on the big chunk of purple hanging below the bottom of the coat. If I was freezing and would have to close my coat, Id choose a coat thats a more similar length to the dress OR choose a coat that hits closer to my hip bones.

The key to pulling off this look is making sure your cape or wrap looks intentional and not like an afterthought. Sticking with neutral colors or wraps in the same color family as your dress is a safe bet.
Faux Fur Coat. In the last look above, Erins wearing the same cobalt blue satin dress but this time paired with a standout fur faux wrap coat. Is homecoming only short dresses?
The truth is, any length of dress will be suitable for Homecoming, but there are definitely pros and cons to keep in mind.
Pros of Wearing a Short Dress to Homecoming. Short dresses have the benefit of allowing for more movement and being able to get on the dance floor without worrying about your dress being stepped on. Homecoming is a dance, and since it usually has a more playful atmosphere than Prom, youll likely be dancing the night away! This is probably where the misconception of a short Homecoming dress requirement comes from.
Short dresses also have the benefit of being able to be made from any material regardless of the temperature, since a shortened hemline allows for more airflow.
