In October, wedding guests are expected to wear formal attire, such as a sleek midi dress with a high neck and asymmetrical sleeve. For winter weddings, men are typically expected to wear a tuxedo or suit, with dark, rich colors like navy, charcoal, or black being a safe and stylish choice. Comfortable shoes are also essential for dressing in this season.
For semi-formal fall weddings, dressy attire in a fabric that shows off autumn colors is recommended. Women should wear festive special occasion cocktail dresses, jumpsuits, pants, or skirts, while men should wear dark suits with a crisp shirt.
Most Portuguese weddings lean towards elegant and formal attire, with men wearing suits or tuxedos, while women opt for chic cocktail dresses or elegant evening gowns. Black-tie/Formal Fall Wedding: Rich, darker colors like deep emerald green, black, navy, and burgundy are all appropriate options, but hues like rose, blush, and lavender can make for stunning fall wedding guest options.
For formal fall weddings, a white-tie is the most formal attire possible, while black-tie is the next most formal wedding attire. For a formal dress code, don’t get too carried away with fall prints and patterns; instead, wear a suit or dress in a darker, more autumnal color.
In summary, fall wedding guest outfits can be tailored to suit various occasions, from casual to formal. Dressing for a formal event requires a well-fitted suit, a well-dressed suit, and a well-fitted suit or dress.

What does a guest wear to a formal wedding?
White-Tie. This is the most formal wedding attire possible (think: White House state dinners and royal events). Simply put, women should wear a formal, floor-length evening gown—no exceptions—with jewelry, heels, and an elegant clutch. Men are required to wear a tuxedo with tails, a formal white shirt, a vest, a bow tie, white or gray gloves, and formal footwear, such as derby shoes or oxfords.
Black-Tie. A step down from white-tie attire, black-tie dress codes usually indicate a formal, evening event. Women should wear a floor-length gown that does not reveal the ankles, in sumptuous fabrics like silk and organza. If the wedding seems a bit less formal, however, a sophisticated cocktail dress might be acceptable, but be sure to consult with the bride first. Additionally, its okay for women to sport elegant pantsuits if theyre more comfortable with that specific silhouette. As for men, tuxedos are a must. A black bow tie, black vest or cummerbund, and patent leather shoes are also recommended. For summer weddings, a white dinner jacket and black tuxedo trousers are lovely and acceptable choices, to boot.
Formal or Black-Tie Optional. As the wording here suggests, this dress code is slightly less formal than a black-tie wedding. So, a tuxedo isnt required, but can still be worn if preferred. If opting for a suit, however, a formal dark suit, white shirt, and a conservative tie are acceptable. For women, the outfit choices remain the same: a floor-length gown, a fancy cocktail dress, or a dressy pantsuit. In fact, there isnt much of a difference between black-tie and black-tie optional, although Mae says its more acceptable to wear a dress that shows the ankles (which is not true of a black-tie dress code).

Working Traditional October Colors into Your Home. When incorporating October colors into the home, its great to start with warm base neutral colors, like creamy beiges or light oat browns; they work beautifully to layer in some bolder/more saturated colors on top.
For example, if your entertaining room has warmer neutral furniture like couches and love seats, you can drape rust orange or auburn red throw blankets and pillows over them; after that, arrange some wildflowers on end or coffee tables, green stalks, and dried wheat will work wonderfully to compliment the ensemble! Do you have to wear a full length dress to a formal wedding?
Traditionally women are expected to wear a floor length evening dress to a formal wedding. Often a sophisticated and dressy cocktail dress is also appropriate, however if the bride is traditional we recommend a floor length dress.
A full length dress means that the ankle is not visible. However, we have more leeway with this in modern times. It is not uncommon these days for the formal hem to fall one to three inches above the ankle. In addition, formal dresses can now have slits up the side or asymetrical hems where the front is shorter than the back. Summer or even a spring weddings may cancel the formality of full-length dresses and a shorter dress certainly becomes acceptable due to the heat.
If your formal wedding invitation states that the dress code is Black Tie Optional, this is also considered Formal. This does not mean you have to wear black. All colours are acceptable for black tie and formal events, but in this case we would advise to stay away from white or silver dresses (you dont want to steal the brides limelight).
Formal weddings are your perfect excuse to get fancy. So go all out! Sequins, sparkles, bows, and trains are all acceptable extras on a formal dress. Enormous puff sleeves are also coming back into style, especially if they are off-the-shoulder.
Can I wear pink to an October wedding?
Blush/dusty pink bridesmaid dresses. Again, most people will look at these pink colours and think more spring than autumn. However, the right shade and blushes can be really stunning in autumn. By this we mean deeper blushes with a dash of purple undertone, cinnamon rose or dusty rose.
These deeper blushes will go perfectly with dark burgundy or red florals, and if the groomsmen are going to wear dark grey, a blush pink will complement the suits nicely. If you want to go darker with the colours, you could add some greenery in with the burgundy for richness. As weve seen, adding some sage can work well for early autumn too.
Figuring out what to wear to an autumn wedding can be challenging, the backless and strapless dresses that would have been perfect in the summer will leave you shivering in the autumn. Also, the light pastels that suited the freshness of spring can look out of place as the leaves change. A new season brings a new style and new colours, especially for wedding attire.
