What To Wear To A Wedding In Kenya?

Traditional Kenyan wedding attire varies across ethnic groups, with the Maasai community known for their distinctive red shuka cloths and intricate beadwork. For men, traditional attire is generally conservative, while African clothing is also recommended. The engagement ceremony, bridal preparations, beautification process, dowry negotiations, blessing, and presentation are all essential aspects of the wedding.

Finding the perfect wedding wear in Kenya depends on the size of the impression you want to make. Men often bring their A-game in terms of what they wear and how well dressed they are. Daytime weddings are more casual, so lighter fabrics, festive colors, and less-formal attire is the rule. Women should wear a nice daytime dress, skirt, top, or jumpsuit, while men should wear a well-tailored suit in a mid-to-dark neutral color like gray, blue, or charcoal. Sleeveless tops are generally acceptable at beach and resort areas, as well as in the evening.

Happy Wishy, a Kenyan bridal shop, recommends flowy gowns, maxi dresses, and African wear for wedding guests.

In Kenya, traditional attire varies from tribe to tribe throughout the country, with colors varying but black being largely avoided. For upscale gentleman looking to have the right heads, it is recommended to wear an African print or a respectful outfit, avoid trousers if necessary, and have the length of the outfit longer.

A Kaleidoscope of Colors. When it comes to Kenyan weddings, vibrant colors take center stage. What not to wear on safari in Kenya?

What NOT to Wear on Safari. Dark colours attract Tsetse flies, so stay away from dark blue or black clothing – they have a painful bite! Now that you know what to wear, make sure you know how to pack. Most safari operators will ask that you only bring one suitcase, one overnight duffle bag, and one day pack.

A safari is an essential element to a memorable holiday toSouth Africa. Make sure that you are packing correctly to get the most out of your adventure. The experts at Africa Travel have been sending people on African adventures for 30 years. They have shared their advice so that you know what to bring, what not to bring, and what to bring back.

The type of clothing to take on your safari holiday will depend on the time of year and what type of safari you are going on. Nevertheless, there are some essential tips that are universal.

  • What to Wear on Safari. The best way to get close to the wildlife is to blend in with your surroundings as much as possible by going neutral. Wear greens, browns, and khakis so as to not attract unnecessary attention. For South Africa, khaki is the recommended colour
  • Light-weight, breathable fabrics minimise noise when walking. Layers are a great way to pack light but stay warm. Temperatures can be cool on morning game drives, hot in the afternoon and cold at night. Layers allow you to remove clothing to make yourself comfortable as temperatures fluctuate
  • Airy, long-sleeved shirts with a collar will keep the sun off your arms and neck
  • Combat trousers are perfect with plenty of pockets to store your camera, sunscreen, and binoculars
  • A light jacket or fleece is great for an extra layer of warmth in case you need it. Fleece is great because it dries quickly too
  • Comfortable trainers are suitable for most safaris, even walking safaris. You can expect to be climbing in and out of the safari vehicle frequently and some light walking around the bush
  • Hats are a fantastic way to protect your head and face from the sun in an open-top safari vehicle and they have the added benefit of reducing glare for better game viewing
  • Sunglasses should be worn to block out harmful rays and polarisedglasses will cut through the glare to make sure you don’t miss a thing
  • Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit if your lodge has a pool
  • For your evening meal, light colours are recommended so as to not attract mosquitoes. Linen trousers are the perfect way to look smart, stay cool, and prevent mosquito bites

Is it OK for a woman to wear black to a wedding?

Factor In The Wedding Partys Attire. Of course, you dont want to upstage the bride or blend in with the wedding attendants if either is wearing black. Although its non-traditional, some brides wear dark colors on their big day, and attendants are often in black attire for more formal weddings. I have beautiful brides wearing black wedding dresses, said Anastasia Stevenson, a destination wedding planner with Coastal Creative Weddings in Tybee Island, GA. It is perfectly acceptable and chic to wear black to evening, black tie, and winter weddings.

Ryncarz agreed that it is wise to gauge the attire of the wedding attendants. When wearing black to a wedding, keep the outfit in line with the dressiness of the bridal party and wedding as a whole, she said. As long as the event calls for a particular level of formality and you wont upstage the couple or the wedding party, its safe to wear black to the wedding.

Ask The Couple About The Attire. When in doubt, ask the couple. Even if you arent close to the bride or groom, ask someone you know, such as the mother of the bride or a wedding attendant. Doing so may encourage the couple to clarify and add more detail to their wedding website. Plus, you can attend with complete assurance that you wont be making a blunder.

When asked about whether or not it was acceptable to wear black to a wedding, Bri Marbais, a bridal stylist at The Bridal Finery in Orlando, Florida, said, Its becoming very common for couples to require guests to wear a certain color, and black is the most popular. Our best advice is just always to ask if you arent sure, advised Marbais. A simple query can clarify what to wear, so you show up confidently without drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.

What is the dress etiquette in Kenya?

When visiting Kenya, its important to respect the culture and follow the local customs and dress codes. The general rule on how to dress in Kenya is to wear conservative clothing. That means long, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders, knees, midriff, chest and back. This dress code should be followed everywhere including cities like Nairobi, however, you should aim to dress more modestly and wear longer clothing in more conservative rural areas.

While long clothing might sound extra hot, its actually more comfortable as it protects you from the sun and insects like mosquitoes. Youll also feel more comfortable when you blend in with the locals and theyll appreciate your efforts to respect their culture.

Who pays for a wedding in Kenya?

We all celebrated in the office last year when Robert announced his wedding. Engagements are very different out here however. First of all, there is usually no formal engagement moment when the man asks the woman in a special way. Usually the couple is dating and at some point the topic of marriage comes up. They talk about it for a while, and then start making formal introductions to the families. There is also no engagement ring that is given to the woman. There is only the ring given at the wedding ceremony. After the introductions, there are months of negotiations between the man and the brides family, usually the father and a council from the community. They negotiate if they can get married and how much the bride is worth, either in money or sometimes livestock. During that time, the man also starts making preparations for the wedding. So for for the past year, Robert has been going through this process and saving money to pay the dowry for Lucy. For most Kenyan men, it can be a long road. Not only do Kenyan men have to pay for the bride, they also have to pay for the entire wedding!

My wife and I were invited months ago and had been anticipating the day for a while. I was excited to go to a wedding out in rural Kenya, some people in Nairobi might call it the “bush.” Having a car in Kenya is not the norm, so we were asked if our car would be in the bridal car brigade. We were happy to accept. However, little did we know when we showed up that my wife would end up driving the car and leading the entire brigade! Did I mention we were far out in rural Kenya and had no idea where we were going?!

It was an amazing day seeing the entire community get involved. Friends of friends of the groom are up at the crack of dawn to start the preparations. The first thing that happens is that the cars are decorated and the bridal party, with other women in the village, go to the house of the bride in the morning to sing, dance, and honk the car horns as loud as possible outside the house. When the bride comes out, the whole entourage celebrates, roles out a red carpet, sings some traditional songs, and then goes church. Meanwhile, the groom is waiting with his party at the church. When the bride arrives, the ceremony starts.

What gesture of good luck is often done before a wedding in Kenya?

A dads spit for good luck for the Maasai people in Kenya. If you go to a wedding in Kenya, the day may end with the father of the bride spitting on the bride for good luck. Hoping not to jinx the marriage, the spit is meant in good faith.

Rather than wearing hand jewelry, in India its traditional for the bride to spend hours getting mehndi, paint made from henna, intricately painted on her. While it requires a lot of patience, the results are a beautiful work of art that lasts roughly two weeks on the skin.

Interestingly enough, menhdi is actually painted onto the bride for its medicinal properties. Its meant to help calm the bridge while dealing with the stress of the wedding day.

If you attend a wedding in Norway, youll love the cake for two reasons. For starters a traditional wedding cake, called a kransekake, is created by placing iced almond cake rings on top of each other to create a cone shape. Even better? In the center of this hollow cake, youll find gifts, like a bottle of champagne or wine.
