Bernie Sanders, a popular Democrat senator, has been accused of honeymooning in the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. The popular Democrat senator and his wife, Jane, traveled to Moscow in 1988, where they formed an alliance with the Soviet city of Yaroslavl. Sanders later described the trip as “a very strange honeymoon” with his bride Jane. The trip was part of 3½ hours of raw, never publicly seen footage of the trip.
Sanders and his wife did travel to Yaroslavl, a city in the Soviet Union, after their marriage. The trip was a pivotal time in the Cold War, as Moscow saw a chance for propaganda. Sanders missed the vote but did not affect the outcome. He was also meeting with women who accused his 2016 presidential campaign of sexual misconduct.
The Democratic presidential candidate spent his honeymoon behind the Iron Curtain in 1988 to learn from each other. In 1988, Ronald Reagan visited Moscow to finalize a key arms treaty as US-Russian relations continued to warm in the waning days of the Cold War. Bernie Sanders and nearly a dozen other Vermonters called a press conference to talk about their own recent trip to the Soviet Union.
The state of the country in 1988 wouldn’t have made him a communist sympathizer, and the trip was not a honeymoon trip. Video clips from the 1980s of Sanders talking about his visits to the Soviet Union, Cuba, and Nicaragua are being spread online by rivals.
