When Is A Marriage Over Biblically?

The Bible teaches that marriage is a covenantal relationship between one man and one woman, established by God. It is made to endure sin and is not a product of human social evolution. Marriage is made to endure sin, and God calls husbands to faithfulness. The Bible states that God performed the first marriage on the sixth day of Creation week, and Jesus taught that divorce is physically and spiritually impossible.

There are seven biblical grounds for divorce, including adultery, treachery, virtual infidelity, abandonment by an unbeliever, and lack of peace. These grounds can lead to harmful and unhelpful behavioral patterns before infidelity takes place. If a spouse feels neglected, inferior, or dominated, they may refuse intimacy to get even or regain control, or lose interest altogether.

The Bible only explicitly allows divorce for two reasons: sexual immorality (Matthew 5:32; 19:9) and abandonment by an unbeliever (1 Corinthians 7:15). However, divorce is not required or encouraged in these cases.

When a couple feels they are reaching a breaking point or have been betrayed, it is best to verbalize that their marriage is in serious trouble. God intends a married couple to become so close physically, emotionally, and spiritually that they are as “one flesh.” When something so serious comes between them that they cannot no longer be “one,” their marital bond has broken. This brokenness is a harsh reality that the marriage is over.

God also hates adultery, and unrepentant adultery is a God-sanctioned reason for divorce. A wife must not leave her husband, but if she does, she must follow the command from the Lord. The only time a marriage should end is when one of them dies, marries someone else, or one of them marries someone else.

How to know when God wants you to leave a relationship?

11 Signs God Is Telling You to Break Up with Your Boyfriend: 1. You have a gut feeling. 2. He makes you disobey God. 3. He ignores your boundaries. 4. You don’t feel in control around him. 5. He’s more important to you than God. 6. He doesn’t share your commitment to God. 7. You don’t enjoy your time together. If you’re wondering if God wants you to break up with your boyfriend, you probably don’t know what to do. You have to decide to break up with your boyfriend, but we can help you make the right choice. We’ll show you signs that a breakup might be right for you. When we accept God into our hearts, He can help us find the right path. If you feel your relationship is wrong, try to see if this is a warning from God. Scripture says that God gives us intuition. As the Book of Job asks: “Who gives the heart intuition and the mind instinct?” Intuition is a great gift, but not infallible. Christians should use their reasoning to decide the right path. Before breaking up with your boyfriend, talk to him. It can be hard to tell your partner you’re unsure about the relationship. But talking it through might help.

What makes a marriage last in the Bible?

Love is patient and kind. It is not jealous, arrogant, or proud. It doesn’t dishonor others, it isn’t selfish, it isn’t easily angered, and it doesn’t hold a grudge. Love is not evil, but truthful. It always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. A godly marriage doesn’t depend on feelings. Both can be unhealthy.

The love we show our spouse should reflect the love God has shown us through Jesus and the love God shows us every day through His mercy and grace. His love is unconditional, and we love our spouses because of it.

What does the Bible say about the end of marriage?

The Bible and separation in marriage. 1 Corinthians 7:10-11–But for those who are married, I have a command from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband. If she leaves, she should stay single or reconcile. The husband must not leave his wife. Separation is not something to be done lightly. It’s serious and should be avoided if possible. Sometimes it’s necessary, but these cases are rare. In these cases, we should try to reconcile the marriage. If a therapeutic separation is possible, it’s the best option! The passage in 1 Corinthians above says this is agreed upon. If it can incorporate the 90-day detox, even better!

What are the essential ends of marriage?

The Ends of Marriage. The main reason for marriage. “Marriage is for having and raising kids.”

Note of certainty from theology: From the Bible.

Old Testament: “God made man in his image: male and female he made them.” And God blessed them. “Be fruitful and multiply.”

New Testament: Saint Paul says of women: “She will be saved through childbearing.”

Does God want you to stay in an unhappy marriage?

God designed marriage to last forever. It’s a strong commitment. He wants you to stay married unless you are being abused or unfaithful. You must stay committed to your spouse, even if you’re unhappy.

On what grounds does the Bible allow divorce?

Divorce in the Bible is only considered under the only exceptional circumstance of sexual immorality. If either spouse remarries a person not divorced under this rule, or if they have not been divorced because of immoral behavior, then they will have committed adultery.

What is the only acceptable reason for divorce in the Bible?

In the Bible, divorce is only allowed if one partner has an affair. The following verses about divorce in the Bible explain it well.

Is marriage permanent in the Bible?

This covenant was meant to last a lifetime. This is why Jesus said in Matthew 19:6: They are now one flesh. What God joins together, let no one separate. There’s another divine aspect to marriage.

3 reasons for divorce in the bible

What are the three biblical reasons for divorce?

Four reasons a Christian can divorce: adultery. Jesus mentions adultery as a reason for divorce. … Addiction. Without treatment, addiction will take over. … Abuse. We usually think of physical abuse. … Abandonment. Finally, abandonment can cause brokenness. Divorce is common in our culture, but for Christians in broken marriages, it can be a moral dilemma. Should they stay in an unhealthy marriage for a vow? Or do they get a divorce? The choices can leave Christians in a kind of limbo. They are no longer committed to a marriage that is irreparable, but they cannot move on. As a Texas family attorney and Christian, I have helped many Christians decide whether to divorce or not. Christians also ask me about divorce.

Are Christians sinning if they divorce?; Are they going to hell?; Must they stay in an unloving, unwholesome marriage?; Are there any circumstances that permit Christians to divorce?

What is the point of staying in an unhappy marriage?

Money isn’t the only reason. Money is one reason people stay in unhappy marriages, but it’s not the only one. Some couples stay married because they’re afraid a divorce would hurt their kids. It is well known that children of divorce are more likely to engage in risky behavior and experience anxiety and depression. However, research is inconclusive as to whether children benefit from two married parents or two actively parenting adults. Staying together for the kids is less important than parenting well. Emotions also affect whether couples get divorced. One of the hardest emotions for divorcing couples is shame. Divorce makes people ashamed because of the bad things people say about divorce. It’s hard for two people to stay married, especially when they take an oath to stay together forever in front of friends and family. Is ending a marriage the same as failing at marriage? Most couples try to stay together, but they realize they’ve changed and that staying married isn’t an option. Fear stops unhappy couples from divorcing. It can be rational or existential. Common reasons for not divorcing include financial worries, concerns about breaking up the family, and the loss of friends and social networks. If someone is afraid of life without their spouse or is in an abusive relationship, they may feel forced to stay married.

When god releases you from marriage

What does God say about leaving a toxic marriage?

The Bible says we shouldn’t stay in relationships with people who hurt us. The Bible says we should leave relationships with bad people. (1 Corinthians 15:33, Proverbs 13:20, Psalm 1:1, Proverbs 6:27, 1 Corinthians 5:11, 1 Corinthians 10:13 – these are just a few). Parents and siblings are the same. Jesus told the disciples to flee persecution in one city by going to another. (Matthew 10:23). God didn’t tell them not to love. He told them to love from a distance because we must love, but we aren’t commanded to love evil.

  • I definitely needed this my wife and I are separated now and I am definitely guilty of not giving my wife some of these things the pastor mentioned. I definitely feel like food is not listening because it was my doing. Everything spoken makes perfect sense. I will continue to pray and fight for my marriage and no matter what I will keep my faith in the lord!!

  • Praying for all the people on here and that God will heal and restore and strengthen your marriages. I too would ask for prayer for my husband and I. We said from the get-go, we wanted a Godly marriage and satan is attacking us big time. This is a man that I have known since fifth grade when I had a crush on him. I want to keep our love and our story alive until God takes us home.

  • I’m currently separated just over a month from my wife of 24 years and she says there is no fixing this and wants a divorce. I had a couple affairs and she did as well. I was not a man of God like I should’ve been. I’m working on my relationship with God daily and I continue to pray she changes as well and we can save our marriage. I love her dearly and made many mistakes and hurt her.

  • Even if one is unmarried, not planning on marriage, divorced, this was an excellent sermon! It’s relational. We have relationships with all kinds of people. We must put God the Father first always in all we do, giving Him honor and glory in Jesus’ name, asking Him to guide us and make our paths straight. Amen 🙏🏽

  • Father God only you know what is needed. I ask that you fix anything that is broken, you are a promise keeper, miracle worker, light in the darkness, my God. Thank for the favor over my life and the others that seek faith in you. I pray that you do something miraculous for all. Touch the hearts of all, show up and show out. We belong to you the devil can not have our families. Amen

  • I had an ugly argument last night with my husband. I was hurt by something my husband said he didn’t remember AND I went from 1-1000 😞. Thankfully I got convicted by the Holy Spirit to apologize for my out burst. In the past I would have just went to bed and let the cracks continue to spread. It did take me 15-20 min but I did apologize and it helped greatly. We continued a positive note this am. Lord please continue to bring to light the things I /we need to work on. Amen

  • I wish people understood the generational part….. As my parents who have been married for 34 years are in the middle of a divorce. I am married to a wonderful man (thank God for this blessing) and we have 3 amazing children. If nothing else this whole thing has taught me to cherish my husband more and to understand how important it is for us to fight for our marriage. It breaks my heart when people refuse to acknowledge the damage they are creating in future generations lives with their selfish decisions.

  • Please pray for my marriage, I love my spouse unconditionally, we’ve run into some communication problems. We’ve been apart for 6 months & my children have been impacted by the split massively. I’m standing for my marriage & declare & decree a marriage restoration & reconciliation in the name of Jesus Christ.

  • Please Pray for me and my wife’s Marriage I messed up two months ago and I’ve messed up multiple times with inequity My wife needs to see I’m changed and Know God wants out marriage to succeed We have a 10 month old boy I never wanted this to happen We’re currently separated and living away from each other but still married She told me she’s leaning to staying separated God has been doing a work in me and I believe He is in Her I’m not giving up Please pray for this The restoration of our marriage and that it’s better than it was She sees it won’t be the same and that’s okay but it will be similar And better We’re better together and I love her so much I will never love anyone else She’s my everything Under Jesus I won’t do what I did again to Jesus and fall into the same sin And in result I won’t do it to her Pray for our healing and healing together and us being happily married

  • Marriage is so hard to understand, I love my Lord Jesus Christ and he is the opposite of me !!! I I’m so unhappy and pray, cry, and sometimes hate coming to my own home after work !!!! I have prayed and prayed and no change yet I should have listened to my pastors 30 years ago!!!! Send prayers for a change 💜💜💜💜I just want to be married to a man that puts God fist and worships him as much as I do !!!!!

  • I’m 22 years old and I been single all my life I have seen relationships in my family I seen everyone in my family date besides my grandmas and my dad plus my mom and my dad broke up after I was born I have seen friends into relationships from school my special needs friends I have always told myself as a single 22 year old special Ed person wait for God just wait on God and I’m glad Jesus is in my life and I been waiting on God ever since for God to find me the right one

  • Please pray for my daughter & son-in-law….both of their actions have caused pain in their marriage. My daughter is working hard to be better in counseling, working, school but her husband sees nothing he has done to hurt her emotionally. No matter what happens they need to be at peace with another since they have babies together. By the Grace of God I know things can improve for them both.

  • I needed to hear this message. I truly love my family and the devil has create so much chaos in our marriage to the point that it looks so destroyed that there’s no coming back. I realize that there is more i could have actually done because neither one of us were holding on to God properly. I am done letting Satan destroy our lives. The part about Pastor Evans parents really touched me. I am at the same exactly point and i almost gave up until i heard this message. Its hard to fight alone for something such as this. I want to bring my wife and children closer to the Lord and i still have a ways to go myself. I want to take the opportunity to touch and agree with everyone who is willing to line themselves up with the Lord and fight for their marriages and for their family.

  • What a word!!! I wish my husband and I heard this message before marriage. We’ve been married for 19 yrs and I’m struggling in this marriage because he broke our covenant vows. I had forgiven him. But, to find out he’s still talking to her. I want my marriage and he says he does, but sometimes it doesn’t appear that way. I am a pastor and it’s been hard. However, I’ll continue to pray for us.

  • Please pray for my marriage. We have been separated for 6 years and I still pray daily for his return. When I look back now, I see all the mistakes I made…and there is nothing I can say to fix things. He doesn’t want to talk and he says he doesn’t want to return. I believe Jesus’s words…that we should not divorce and I know that anything is possible with the Lord’s help. Please pray for God is soften his heart and please pray that I have strength to fight this.

  • Great Covenant Marriage Message!!! Where there is Unity there is STRENGTH! My Mom led my dad and his entire family including his parents, to Christ, by fasting, praying and by living a life set aside for the master’s use, after she got saved giving her life FULLY to Christ. This woman had 13 children with our dad. No outside kids from neither parents outside their marriage covenant. What a Great Blessing. She is So Greatly missed. Marriage doesn’t have to be hard (even when challenges do come) if two are on one accord in God while in marriage covenant with God and with each other. God can prepare us for some things so that they won’t be able to get the very best of us. People Couples allow other things, others, as well as themselves to get in the way of Gods way of seeing, being, and doing in regards to covenant vows and covenant unity. Your covenant marriage can be unique to you both, experiencing nothing like no other. Abundantly Blessed Full of Joy and Peace and Highly Favored by God especially and by man. Having enough discerning, sensitivity, passion and compassion to the needs and wants of each other. No Ordinary Love and Covenant Marriage. Not living in a fantasy, but living a manifested reality, doing purpose in covenant unity. This is Excellent Marriage Covenant Teaching. God Bless😊

  • I was looking for something totally different (selfish desires) to comfort my Soul today and decided to click on this even though I’m twice divorced, unmarried, and longing for a Godly woman who understands and submits to order. I’m struggling now with a few life challenges but after listening to this great message my problems don’t seem so imperative. Him talking about his late wife’s cooking and his parents transformation to God was such an inspiration. Thank you Pastor Evans for your service to mankind! 🙏🏽

  • God your will not mine your plan not mine but my hearts desire is for my marriage to be restored but first both of our souls must be restored and bless us both to go through you to come back to each other. Being separated in the same house in the same bed is painful but I know there is purpose for my pain. I trust you God. Everyone please pray that my marriage is healed fully and permanently removing the narcissistic and jezebel spirit in both of us. Amen!

  • I needed to run away with my children from my husband…. To our original country as we were living abroad…. He was drinking and was threatening. We were so afraid so I left one night. Now he accuses me for leaving him…. He moved in with someone else the same week…. He pushed for a divorce as he wants to remarry…… I have faith in our Lord…. I am standing for my marriage still….. it has been a year now since we have left him……. He got rid of both me and the children and is starting fresh….. we were married for 18 years and our children are 10,13,16…… our beautiful girls….. he haven’t seen them since we left….. I am putting everything in our Lord’s hands….

  • I absolutely love Dr. Tony Evans! I’ve seen him preach in person many times, and this man has a gift from God. I pray for him, and any temptations he has to deal with as a pastor. One thing I have always loved about Dr. Evans is how he preaches to himself first, as well as the congregation. My favorite experience was going to his church Potter’s House in Texas. I was embraced at his church by his congregants when I visited, and that is one of the many signs of a Holy Spirit filled church body. Amazing!

  • This is the first pastor or any guidance that I have heard that provided me with a biblical understanding of marriage and roles of marriage. I needed this in 2004 when I was first married and even before I was married. I believe this is a message that should resonate with married couples and anyone thinking of marriage in the future. Not only that, but I am thankful to God for using Dr. Evans to share the biblical foundations of marriage. I also found another message for the “Biblical Argument for Loving Your Women” by Dr. Evans. Thank you @drtoneyevans

  • Pray for my marriage, after 52 years, a step Son almost destroyed it, I had left, a stepson in charge, he webpnt to domenion Republic and left him alone and he had no food, God show me something was wrong, my husband lost 6 lbs, I went home to take care of my husband for the rest of our life, he is almost 90, I am 78, so my doctors said you need time away, you have been his care given since 1999. So my stepson whom I knew was trouble. God forgive him, I just praise God, I just thank God my husband is alive, we have a covenant, with each other, and with our mighty God.

  • ” A man, a woman, with hearts turned to the Lord,\r In covenant, their love in one accord.\r Deny this truth, and peril’s path they tread,\r In Christ, together, their souls are wed.\r \r A Christian’s heart, mature and fully grown,\r Knows God’s glory in each step they’ve shown.\r In wedded love, a sacred path to trod,\r Mature in marriage, in the eyes of God.\r \r To understand, to fathom love’s great art,\r We must begin with God, the beating heart.\r In Scripture’s verse, His nature we’ll explore,\r And learn from Him, love’s purpose to implore.\r \r A covenant, the core of love’s grand scheme,\r In God’s triune bond, it’s not a dream.\r For He, the Father, chose a bride so fair,\r His Son’s own Church, a love beyond compare…” Full poem narrated on my YouTube website // Adam’s Call, Love in Aisle Nine..!

  • My first time listening to Dr Tony Evans. A friend sent me a article in messenger at 2:00 am. 😮 I didn’t want to open it because I really didn’t want to see something I didn’t need to. And I heard about how guys play not funny games. So I waited and prayed I kept looking at it I talked with my sister and she said open it. The Lord answered one of my prayers to find teachers and preachers who are building the body of Christ 🎉

  • Lord, I Thank You for this sermon! I knew it was imperative to marry the right person but this just breaks everything down to where you can truly understand the extreme importance. It’s not just for me but it’s for the children and their children. Lord, Thank You for allowing me to hear this message! I Thank You Jesus for my covering! I Thank You Jesus for the covenant You have made for me and mines! Thank You Jesus! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

  • Tony I hope you understand and I hope you don’t get tired of hearing the same thing I always say, but it’s because sometimes I don’t know what else to say except that I truly do appreciate you and this wonderful message ❤ God bless you and I also want to say that you are a very wise and highly intelligent man, thank you so much and love you brother

  • This was SO SO GOOD! 👏🏾🙌🏾🔥 I’m currently single, but am intentionally preparing for marriage. Tomorrow will start my 11th week. I just started his book Kingdom Marriage and this is the perfect complementary article. I strongly believe and can feel it in my soul that I will have a beautiful marriage like he described in this article. To God be praised. I’m thankful in advanced. ❤️🥰🙌🏾

  • Thanks Jill, I listened intensely and heard just what I needed to understand why I’m the way that I am. Never realized that what happened to me was traumatic. Now, with God ‘s help I can heal. You expressed with such knowledge and understanding of this subject matter. Excellent infor presented very professionally.

  • Dear God, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God. We bow reverently before your throne. May we honor your laws which you gave us in the Bible. While we know things of the world may pass away, we know that your Word lasts forever. It does not change. Allow our hearts to fix on your truths above all others so that we may live holy lives. Help us to honor your laws by our actions and our hearts. May our hearts by a welcome home for a holy savior. In Jesus’ name, amen !!!

  • This has been the most painful time in my walk in Christ as I have failed to love my wife sacrificially and unconditionally as Christ has loved the church and my wife now seeks to disqualify me in seeking a divorce .. there was no adultery just hurtful words which time and again came out of this writer’s mouth and the last time was the proverbial straw that broke my beautiful wifes (Lisette) back if not her heart.. ALL please pray that the Lord our God softens her heart toward marital restoration and bends me at that time completely to be the man she needs me to be in Jesus name!

  • Not sure if this applies but I have recently opened my heart to Jesus again. I am married and feel Satan trying to destroy my marriage with anxiety, thoughts of infidelity, and depression. Hearing this is opening so much for me and I can only pray that while i found my way back to Jesus, my husband does the same and we have our marriage protected by God.

  • GOD is the glue he holds it all together. Speaking from experience of a marriage that had à returning Crack. GOD is our fondation stabler. When I got serious with GOD and studied HIS desire for marriage to represent CHRIST & HIS CHURCH and applied it to my marriage, we will celebrate 55 years in Feb 2023. All praises to a covenant GOD!

  • Thank you Jesus. I needed to hear this word. I will make sure my daughter’s hear it also. If God gives us the opportunity to marry again we will know how to live in the covenant of marriage Thank you Lord. May this covenant of marriage become a part of our lives now and for generations to come in Jesus Name I pray Aman. Thank you Lord. 😊

  • 😂😂😂every year we seem to get into a big argument right before our anniversary However we are covered by the blood of Jesus. We have been in love for over 33 years and married for 25 years . 🎉❤pray🙏💪. Let me clarify this the last couple of years. Now we have been together since 9th grade Jr high school best friends 🙂. God is so so Good! We have had more blessed day than no so good 🙂

  • Well, when my covert narcissistic wife seen me submitting to the lord her words was, “WELL JUST CAUSE YOU MOVE THAT WAY DNT MEAN I GOTTA MOVE THAT WAY. IT SAYS MAN! NOT WOMAN.” So she continued miss treating me. I did my best to remember the word and how it says husbands, love your wife like christ, love’s the church.

  • Prayers for a marriage that is in ruins. Wrestling with lies, disrespect, and Yahushua only knows what else. Pray that the truth is revealed, that either we come back together through true misunderstanding, confession and repentance, or separate as believers dont have to be unequally yoked. I am fine living out the rest of my days till death do us part seperated, single, and without committing adultery if that is Yahusua’s will.

  • No Pastor covenants never dissolves we the people make them go away Marriage is Devine u can’t separate no matter how much u don’t like your marriage good or bad sickness in health till death do us part.. your happiness don’t matter your joy in Christ Jesus only matters.. GOD never gave u permissions to Divorce Moses did that Moses didn’t create the covenant.. GOD did Divorce is a Sin!!

  • Therefore, do not join yourselves as a believer with an unbeliever being unequally yoked. This was what I so wanted to overlook but it cannot be, and you will suffer the consequences. What does salt water and fresh water have in common? Do they flow from the same spring??? I think NOT!! The reason I will from now on not argue with my creator. Who am I, the clay, telling the Potter what will work?? (While the whole time God speaking to me about coming out from among them and separate myself).

  • Ok so short story I got married didn’t know I wasn’t ready I was an alcoholic hurt my wife seen that and woke up went to rehab 1 year clean ready to love her the way God created me to, wife won’t forgive she left me not yet divorced but separated no I didn’t cheat and no I never put my hands on her I still love her don’t want the D she is in a whole nother state I can’t call, unanswered emails what should I do move on or should I stand?

  • Correct Marriage is a COVENANT & covenants can only be closed/ended by death- Like Jesus Christ finish work over the old testament & Victory over the new testament cross CLOSED THE OLD TESTAMENT (Hebrews 10:9 – Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He CANCELS the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. NLT; New Living Translation. / Hebrews 8:7 – If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it. NLT) Teachers should stop teaching believers to live out the old testament, reopening a fulfilled testament makes Christ victory over a the new testament null & void- The old testament is only for our historic reference – NO believer can defeat Satan with anything out of the old testament (which is why Jesus didn’t March around the devil 7 times like the Jericho walls- he quoted Scriptures to teach us spiritual warfare- and he only used old testament Scriptures because his work on a new testament cross & the books of the new testament weren’t published yet (one must understand pre & post cross), when Jesus was on the earth (before the cross) the world was still under the dispensation of the old covenant until he finished his work over the cross & resurrected ~Gilchrist
