Where Are Marriage Licenses Kept?

For centuries, the church was responsible for birth, marriage, and death registration in Germany. The Registry Office at your place of residence is responsible for registering the marriage (application). If neither party has a residence in Germany, the Registry Office is responsible for the registration of all civil status cases (births, marriages, and deaths) in Frankfurt and the legally related applications and name changes.

In Germany, marriages do not need to be officially married to live with your partner and have children. Applications should be filed with the registrar’s office in Germany where either party has their residence. If neither party has a residence in the Federal Republic of Germany, marriages may be registered upon request at the competent Registrar’s office.

Marriage records are kept on various levels, such as national, state or province, county, town, or church parish level. More recent marriage records are typically kept at the national, state or province, county, town, or church parish level. Confidential marriages are common in California, comprising about 20% of the states total marriages.

In St. Louis County, marriage licenses are required and can be obtained online or in person. Marriage records are typically kept at a county courthouse or recorders office, with some counties having searchable online records. Certified copies are only available at the county clerk in the county where the marriage occurred.

Copies of marriage records can also be obtained from the town or city clerk where the original license was purchased. Amendments to marriage laws have been made since January 1, 1926, and marriage records have been kept by state and county officials since then.

When did New York start keeping marriage records?

New York began statewide registration of births, marriages, and deaths (vital records) in 1880-81, under supervision of the State and local boards of health. Compliance with the law was incomplete until 1913 or even later; therefore certificates are lacking for many events.

  • The indexes cover the entire state outside of New York City and start in June 1880 (deaths) or 1881 (marriages and births).
  • Birth indexes are made available after 75 years, marriage and death indexes after 50 years. Birth indexes have been made available through 1937 only.
  • An index entry states only the name of the person, date and place of event, and State certificate number. Indexes for certain years are arranged by SOUNDEX codes.
  • The data in the indexes is not available in electronic format, except for death indexes made available for download from the State Department of Health. These datasets start in 1957 and are posted after 50 years. Data elements include year/date of death, decedent name, gender, residence code, and state file number.
  • The State Archives also holds an index to “delayed” birth certificates filed for some births occurring prior to 1881 series B2029, mostly in the 1870s.

Scope of Indexes:. The DOH indexes do not include vital events in New York City and in the former city of Brooklyn for any period. Indexes to New York City vital records are available through the Vitalsearch Company (for a fee), and for free on the websites of the Italian Genealogical Group and the German Genealogy Group.; The indexes do include vital events in the former towns of Kings County prior to their annexation by the City of Brooklyn in the 1880s and 90s; in portions of Westchester County prior to their annexation by New York City in 1895; and in Richmond County (Staten Island) and the western portion of Queens County prior to their incorporation into the City of New York, January 1, 1898.; The indexes don’t include births, deaths, or marriages in Albany, Buffalo, or Yonkers before 1914 or 1908. Contact the local registrar for earlier records. The birth indexes do not include adopted infants. The birth and death indexes include individuals born or died in a state facility.
