To everyone commenting on how the article refers to Amber as a ‘they’: Please do research before you jump to conclusions. Amber uses they/them pronouns, and the narrator was only respecting this. They/them, believe it or not, has always been able to be used in a singular form. Before people began to identify outside of male and female, they/them pronouns were used to refer to someone you did not know the gender of. For example, you could say: ‘when I go to the store, I will ask the cashier if they could get me a bag’. In this instance, you are referring to only one person, yet you are using they/them pronouns because the gender of the cashier has not been identified as male or female yet. With non-binary individuals, it’s almost as though their gender will simply never be identified as either male or female (unless they change their mind), so you continue to use they/them pronouns. Of course, gender is much more complex and rich than that, but that was the simplest way I could think of putting it.
Whoever decided that “they” is a thing to call a person does not understand how dehumanizing that really is. I’m not sure people who choose this for themselves even understand it. You call someone “they” to remove an identity from them (to keep someone anonymous) and people who want this must still feel in a way like there is no way to claim a real identity. Or I suppose she is referencing all the other people as well, who were also achievers….and so did not want to particularly reference this lady alone in order to acknowledge the rest.
