What disability did Hank Williams have?
Ernest Huble Williams, the first child of Williams, died two days after he was born on July 5, 1921. A daughter, Irene, was born a year later. Williams was named after Hiram I of the Book of Kings. His name was misspelled as Hiriam on his birth certificate. Williams was born with spina bifida occulta, a birth defect of the spinal column that caused him pain. At the age of three, Williams sat with his mother as she played the organ at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Lillie also sang hymns that influenced her later compositions. Williams got his first harmonica at six. As a kid, he was called Harm by his family and Herky or Skeets by his friends. His dad moved a lot, so the family lived in several Alabama towns. In 1930, when Williams was seven, Elonzo began having trouble moving his face. After being evaluated at a Veterans Affairs clinic in Pensacola, Florida, doctors determined that he had a brain aneurysm. He was sent to the VA Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana. He remained hospitalized for eight years and was mostly absent throughout Williams childhood. From then on, Lillie took care of the family. In the fall of 1933, Williams went to live with his aunt and uncle, Walter and Alice McNeil, in Fountain, Alabama. Their daughter, Opal, went to live with Lillie to go to school in Georgiana, Alabama. Williams learned guitar chords from his aunt and listened to music at dances and churches. The next year, the Williams family moved to Greenville, Alabama, where Lillie opened a boarding house next to the cotton gin.The family returned to Georgiana with Opal McNeil. Lillie took several jobs to support the family during the Great Depression. She worked in a cannery and was a night nurse. Their first house burned down, and they lost their things. They moved to Rose Street, where Williams’ mother turned the house into another boarding house. The house had a small garden where Williams and his sister Irene grew crops that they sold around Georgiana. At a chance meeting in Georgiana, Williams’ sister Irene met U.S. Representative J. Lister Hill while he was campaigning across Alabama. She told Hill that her mother wanted to talk to him about her problems. With Hill’s help, the family began collecting Elonzos disability pension. Despite his medical condition, the family managed financially throughout the Great Depression.

What was Hank Williams last words before he died?
The last trip. Williams arrived at the Andrew Johnson Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee. Carr checked in at 7:08 p.m. and ordered two steaks to be delivered to their rooms from the hotel restaurant. Carr also asked for a doctor for Williams because he was feeling the effects of the alcohol and chloral hydrate he had drunk on the way from Montgomery to Knoxville. Dr. Cardwell gave Williams two shots of vitamin B12 that also contained morphine. Carr and Williams checked out of the hotel at around 10:45 p.m. Hotel porters carried Williams from the hotel to his car, a 1952 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, because he was coughing and hiccuping. Carr and Williams left Knoxville from the Andrew Johnson Hotel via Gay Street to Magnolia Avenue to 11 West. At midnight on New Year’s Day, they crossed the Tennessee state line and arrived in Bristol, Virginia. Carr stopped at a restaurant and asked Williams if he wanted to eat. He said he didn’t want to eat, and that’s thought to be his last words. Carr later stopped for fuel in Oak Hill, West Virginia, where he found Williams asleep in the back seat. He was unresponsive and had already begun to stiffen. Carr realized he was dead and told the gas station owner, Glenn Burdette, who called the police. Stamey called in radio officer Howard Janney because a corpse was involved. Stamey and Janney found beer cans and lyrics to a song in the Cadillac convertible. The coroner and mortician, Dr. Ivan Malinin, performed the autopsy on Williams at the Tyree Funeral House. Malinin found bleeding in the heart and neck and said the cause of death was a weak right ventricle. Malinin also found that Williams had been kicked in the groin during a fight in a Montgomery bar a few days earlier. He had also injured his left arm, which had been bandaged. That evening, when the announcer at Canton announced Williams’s death to the gathered crowd, they laughed, thinking it was just another excuse. After performers sang “I Saw the Light,” the crowd followed them. They realized he was dead.
Controversy William’s death is still a mystery. The autopsy showed that Williams died of a heart attack. In his book Hank Williams: The Biography, author Colin Escott said that the cause of death was heart failure caused by alcohol, morphine, and chloral hydrate.
