The man to women ratios you speak of here is pretty much the same in most countries in the world. As populations of animals in the wild are managed by nature, humans are managed the same. In every country, nature calculates the number of males bot in comparison to that of females. This also happens with death as it happens with birth. The number of females in human is always slightly higher than that of males. This is due to the change in marriage norms since the 21st century. In the mid 20th century, the number of women was much higher to that of men. This was due to that one man would marry more than one woman.

This is very misleading. Mate selection only concerns the dating and marriage formation ages and in every society is from teems to 35 years old. In that range most societies have more males than females and only after 45 or so does it start to have more females than males. I have been to all these countries of the 92 countries dated in most. It only take 1 man and 1 female. I moved from California in 2000 to St Petersburg Russia and love it and the women are great, a balance of femininity, fitness, beauty, education, stylish, and highly cultured. Western men are not usually good mates for them since few western men have the manners, high culture and masculinity that these women want. There are more males than females under 45. If a man who wants a partner they are compatible with they need to get off social media and dating apps and go have a more interesting life doing things that make them more interesting, such as working on causes important to them, and they will naturally meet females who are doing the same thing due to similar passions. Social media access and marriage rates are contra indicators, meaning more time on social media lowers desirable outcomes. American men have a lower relationship rate and higher divorce rate than world average because they spend more time with social media acting needy, No one owes you a relationship, you have to be more compatible to the opposites of feminine traits. I get it Relationships are something that needs daily attention. I won’t go into the specifics of my 2 divorces, it seems that that piece of paper seems to somehow change the relationship between a man and woman. But this only my 2 cents opinion. I am the only one of my 5 other siblings who has a divorce. But I will say, I am a Tradesperson who is able to work almost anywhere. the girls at the beginning of this article are not the ones that are single. the single ones can be found at buffets, candy stores and dive bars. i am american/european and have been to and lived in many countries for business. the pretty ones, all belong to the guys with money. there are some single girls but unless you have money or serious looks, there is nothing available unless you are cool with girls in the under 6 category.

It is not all roses in other nations. For example; El Salvador may have more women but more than 1/3 are single mothers or have gang banger boyfriends and exes. The Mother blaming the doctors for 3 of her kids being disabled instead of her choice of marrying her first cousin is just unbelievable. She should be thankful that the doctors and British tax payers are carrying the burden of looking after her whole family. My first cousin and I are about ten years apart. I had an opportunity to give him and, his two children some company while their emotional state was low during a divorce. His mother, my aunt, encouraged me to get-together with him bc we got along so well. I had to politely say no. I distanced myself then, those relatives treated me indifferently from then on. Weird.

I grew up in a orphanage, but I had one caregiver who insisted on teaching us to search and make sure we do not marry our relatives. To look into our family’s history and avoid the concequnes of having disabled children’s . I had to conquered lots of things and fear, to ensure that strangers I might fall in love are not biological related to me. And this women is asking her doctors and says is fine .it’s horrible.

I’m a Malaysian Pakistani and I have to say, this culture is still very prevelant in our society (the one in my country at least) and encouraged. I know a lot of relatives who were either married their first or second cousin. I’m not married, so the uncles and aunties would say “I can find you someone, I have relatives etc”. I’m like no thank you, the world is so vast so I’m going to explore out of my circle thank you.

This is such a common practice here in Pakistan. All the people in my entire village are related to one another by two or three relations. It’s very complicated. So many children here have issues like this. I’m glad my grandfather, my father and us siblings married outside our family. A lot of our family members were mad at us for not marrying their kids…but having educated parents helped us avoid all this.

This is not only in this case. In Philippines (especially in Iloilo), cousin marriage are prevalent in the past. My aunt (my mom’s cousin) is a product of parents who are first cousins. When I was in Saudi Arabia back in the 90’s, practically every Saudi I knew had married his first cousin. I knew a couple in my parents place of origin, that were cousins and their daughter was born looking fine,but before the age she would be about to walk, she never walked, she never spoke and she was in a vegetative state for 50 years until she passed away. Her husband’s argument, that his brother’s children are fine, even though he married his cousin too is also easily refutable. Every conception is statistically a separate event. It’s always about chances. Also, his brother’s wife may not be a carrier of some gene he and his wife are obviously carriers of. It looks like the children suffer from a condition inherited through an autosomal recessive manner. If his brother isn’t a carrier, or his sister-in-law isn’t a carrier or both aren’t, then they have no chance from the very beginning of conceiving a child who will get sick. This whole situation is a combination of religious bigotry, low educational level and scientific illiteracy.

My mother has just retired from a life of maternity nursing and the level of abusive ignorance frequently received by hospital staff from these “parents” adds yet more disgust to their actions.

Just know people, when your parents put pressure on you and subject you to emotional blackmail, they will NOT be in the picture with you when you end up with children having disabilities. This will be your own struggle alone, you will never see them flourish or get married. This really is your own life and such parents/families should be ashamed of themselves.

I used to have an online friend I met on a article game. She was like a sister and we would play article games together, and bonded over nerdy stuff like anime and art. One day she confessed to me that she was worried she’d have to get married to her cousin. She was around 14 at this time. We’ve drifted apart and we don’t talk anymore. Not a day goes by where I don’t think of her.

I went to school with a young pakastani woman who had married her first cousin, this is in 2005. They came to the west for him to work as a doctor. I told her about the genetic problems 1st cousin marriages can cause in their children & asked if she was not worried about that. I’ve grown up knowing it’s not okay to marry cousin’s or any family member at all. I remember in school we would talk about stuff like this. It’s so sad they kept having children knowing they all would have some kind of disability. It’s very unfair that they worried more about themselves and being together that they didn’t care how their babies would turn out. They could have stayed together and kept it that way. Now they have all these poor humans that will never live a normal life and know what love is from a significant other.

This is actually very normal and very scary. I’m from Pakistan and in my family we do have cousin marriages, but mostly in the older generations. My mother is a doctor and has warned all of my cousins not to proceed with cousin marriages. Many of our uncles and aunts encourage cousin marriages despite knowing the consequences, and it absolutely disgusts me as they’re only putting their children in despair. They mostly encourage these inter-family marriage because they say they then know the other person better for their child than a stranger and were lucky not to have disabled children. In my belief, instead of being suspicious of the other stranger, they should just put their belief and trust in Allah.

I’ve always found it interesting that parents want their children to get the best education, to become a doctor or lawyer, etc. Yet, when you present them with actual scientific facts, they believe it’s wrong, that it’s made up and that doctors don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s so ridiculous. It makes no sense. And to be honest, even though they think they’re right, they end up looking stupid.

I am the youngest of 4 brothers. 3 of my brothers have passed away. They were 27, 28 and 33 when they passed away. They were born with a genetic disease due to my parents being first cousins. I took care of my brothers until the end. They were happy their entire life, but it was lots of suffering too.

In Slovenia it’s prohibited by law to get married to anyone from your immediate family which includes first cousins (but also adoptive parents and caretakers – which isn’t a genetic issue, just an abuse of power dynamics issue). When you register to get married, that is checked. There is no way to legally marry your first cousin. I’m not saying it would completely prevent such unions in UK (because people do illegal stuff all the time), but honestly the line has to be drawn somewhere. It would also help those young people who don’t want to do it and their family is blackmailing them – they would have an extra out.

This is so heartbreaking. It’s horrid to witness the lack of empathy we can have for one another. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a man of culture and religion but surely there are limits. We have come so far as a species to identify these occurrences and the roots associated with them, yet we choose to ignore the lore of evidence when we are faced with it, and blame it on faith. These are also people who want to grow up and live their lives as happily as they can, like just put yourself in their position. This has to start with ourselves first, we can change this.

The statistical data should be apples to apples; out of 1000 first cousin families in the UK, how many children have the same health issues compared to the other countries? The UK won’t be able to tackle this issue by itself, and everyone has to get on board to make sure the next generation is better than the last one

It seems like this comes down to a massive misunderstanding of the laws of probability by these groups. If your offspring have a 25% chance of having a disease, this doesn’t mean that if you have 4 kids, 3 will be fine. It is like if you had a 4 sided dice, and 4 meant the kid has it. Each time you have a kid, you roll the dice. The probability that you roll a 4 doesn’t decrease on your 2nd 3rd or 4th try. You can roll it 3 times and get all 4’s. It is unlikely that it happens 3 consecutive times (0.25 x 0.25 x 0.25) x 100 = 1.5625%, but because there is so much consanguinity, it is even possible for the child to inherit another, completely different recessive disease that has its own, independent probability of inheritance.

I would strongly urge those from a Pakistani background to speak out about this. At the end of the day change cannot come from the outside community. It has to happen from within your communities. You have to be the difference when the rest of the people in your communities don’t have the guts to speak out. There needs to be an act/law drawn up to prevent this from occurring. It is absolutely detrimental for society letting inbreeding take place. Please don’t feel embarrassed or take it personally. At the end of the day, it’s not your fault that you’re born into this mess. You can however make a difference by helping change the way things are going forward.

This has gone on in many cultures for thousands of years. I genuinely feel for the children. They have no life whatsoever. Doomed from the start. I’m lucky that I’m a child of first cousins that hasn’t got anything wrong with me…well yet. But I know that when my brother was young he had speaking problems and started talking at a very late age. I wasn’t aware there was a G7 country still to this day that allows relative marriages. Wow this is very surprising in modern days. And the fact that they aren’t prohibiting by laws… I live in Japan and it’s illegal to marry lineal relatives and for collateral relatives less than 3 kinships. Even if a couple marries outside the country, it wouldn’t be recognized even if you attempted as there’re family registries with everyone’s relations registered and the government can tell it’s an illegal marriage. I also can’t imagine if some immigrants come to my country and claiming their rights to their archaic “traditions” that’s costing the tax payers millions committing crimes, since it’s illegal to marry relatives here. Not too sure why the UK isn’t making this illegal. It’s illegal in many countries for reasons. How outdated…wow.

My parents are first cousins and they were forced to marry each other. I have a disability but not that severe as kids in the article and my older sister doesn’t have any. Its just sad to see people enforcing their ideology that marrying someone who is your indirect sibling is better as you know them already but my parents keep fighting as they aren’t compatible with eachother because every person has a unique personality but they don’t abuse us in any way. How could one see a man or a woman in a cousin? They’re like brothers and sisters to you. It must be forbidden by the law and by religion.
