Child marriage is a significant issue that affects both girls and boys, with nine in 10 children getting married before their 18th birthday. It is rooted in gender inequality and the belief that girls and women are inferior to boys and men. It is made worse by poverty, lack of education, and deprives girls of their right to choose if, when, and whom to marry and what type of family to create.
Child marriage is common worldwide, with over 650 million women and girls alive today being married before their 18th birthday. The biggest barrier to ending child marriage in the U.S. is a lack of awareness, with nearly half of Americans polled believing it is already illegal. Global child marriage rates are slowly falling, with rates of child marriage before age 15 falling from 11% in 2000 to 5% in 2021.
Child marriage happens because of rampant gender inequality, where girls’ lives are not valued the same as boys’ lives. Local social norms often contribute to the practice generation after generation. Child marriage is linked to poverty, and it often ends a girl’s education. Girls who marry before 18 are more likely to experience domestic violence and less opportunities in life.
Child marriage is not just a major barrier to development in many countries in the 21st century, but it is simply “wrong” to young girls. Early marriage limits adolescent girls’ abilities to make decisions about their lives, puts them more at risk of poverty, and makes them more vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and abuse.

Is it okay to marry a child?
There are too many exceptions to child marriage laws in the United States. Child marriage is harmful. It is a human rights violation that legitimizes abuse and denies girls autonomy. When young girls are forced to marry, they are essentially subject to state-sanctioned rape and are at risk of increased domestic violence, forced pregnancy, and negative health consequences, while being denied education and economic opportunity. Equality Now and our partners advocate that theminimum age for marriage be set at 18, no exceptions.
But did you know that only twelve U.S. states meet this standard? Equality Now works around the world to end child, early, and forced marriage, applying our legal expertise in support of partners, individual cases, and legislative efforts. The US should be no exception.

Is forced marriage a moral issue?
“Child and forced marriage represents a violation of virtually all human rights,” says Birga. “It deprives women and girls of autonomy and choice over their bodies and their lives.”
Girls forced into marriage are exposed to early pregnancies that are detrimental to their health because their bodies are not ready. Child marriage also has serious impacts on education because girls are often withdrawn from school to be married off, or they drop out of school after they become pregnant. “This has the effect of perpetuating the cycle of poverty and exclusion,” says Birga.
Theresa Kachindomoto, senior chief of the Dedza District in Malawi, has made it her top mission to abolish the practice of child marriage in the 551 villages in her area. Malawi has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world, where 50 percent of girls are married before they reach adulthood.Even before Malawis parliament passed a law last year prohibiting marriage before the age of 18, Kachindomoto has devoted the past decade using her authority as a custodian of tradition granted to Malawi chiefs to outlaw child marriage in her area. Last year, Kachindomoto convinced 50 village heads to sign an agreement to prohibit and annul child marriages in their villages. She has dismissed five village heads for failing to observe the prohibition and allowing girls to marry.
Working with village leaders and a network of parent groups, Kachindomoto has succeeded in breaking up 1,455 child marriages, gaining her a reputation as a fearless “marriage terminator”. In a country where marrying off a daughter is often seen as a way to gain family resources, Chief Kachindomoto is going to door-to-door to convince parents to keep their girls in school and send young mothers back to the classroom.

Over the course of my life I have had the unfortunate opportunity to meet many people that are attracted to children. In every instance well before I found out about their leanings, I felt so uncomfortable being around them that I would almost get physically sick. I was raised in a fairly secular household with little to no teachings about God or Christianity, closest thing to a religious teaching was hide the beer when grandma is around. It was built into my soul that this was wrong and has only become more solidified as I’ve walked the path of a Christian and father. The fact that we are having this debate is just disgusting. Thank you IP for standing up for children. Daniel and Abdullah, I pray that God shows you both the error of your ways and you repent.
Why is Daniel using an age group that is not even representative of his views to justify his views? What he is promoting is the idea of “if they bleed, they can breed”, yet he chooses to use the age group of 15-19, which is inclusive of biologically mature 18-19 year old which will skew the data, to justify the impregnating of all pubescent girls…. One can only expect such dishonesty from Abduls.
I’m glad I didn’t have to sit through Daniel Pedochews review of IP because listening to this was painful enough. Daniel P has serious issues, and as a doctor myself, if his medical expert is the real deal, just glad I’m not living in New York. Not the brightest bulb on the shelf. Love the way Daniel kept saying, “your society”… isn’t it his society too? Plus they kept talking about sexual maturity when his own prophet had sex with a prepubescent little girl. And he admitted that, according to the Quran, sex was permissible with prepubescent little girls himself.
The problem with most of these Dawah guys is they will do WHATEVER it takes to discredit their opponents no matter if they have a valid point or not. Via Ad hominems and poisoning the well, insults ect. This keeps their indoctrinated followers from not taking others seriously or even considering non muslims intelligent. Idk how their followers dont pick up on this childish tactic.
What I don’t get is how Daniel doesn’t understand basic principles of research. Ethical guidelines have always been in place, and the nature article just outlines it. In most of the article it is saying to contextualize the results and use certain language to minimize harm of specific groups. This is something normal because science aims to have the mass benefice. The article only mentions briefly that a study could cause more harm than good, but the article mentions that in most cases it should not be discouraged because that could cause harm as well. They are aiming for collaboration between researchers and ethical experts. This isn’t too controversial either because researchers collaborate with people who are scientist in the field often. Part of all this has come about due to misuse of research decades ago where people were actually hurt.
They are playing with the wrong guy Keep up the good work Note : I am Arabic Christian and I know that puberty is not needed to make the s with little girl بقدر انو جيب الآيات IP : if you need any help with Islam I maybe can help to translate some good books in Arabic actually they are not good 😅😅 God bless you
Just had the debate pop up from the other side and the comments are pretty wild. There’s all sorts of posts calling you a liberal and how they aspire to be like Daniel. Or how they wish they could have been married that young and how middle schoolers are getting pregnant… This is sad to see and I pray they turn to Jesus.
I will NEVER see a Muslim doctor for fear it’s the faceless Doctor Abdullah. And that’s sad because prior to these debate articles, though a Christian, I naively believed that faith shouldn’t be considered if the person is an M.D. Daniel is doing his faith a horrible disservice by using an anonymous, clearly horrible person to validate his equally horrible arguments.
I was just listening, and around 2:48:03 I got a bit confused… I pretty much sure, hemophilia has nothing to do with psychology, at all! (as you can’t control blood clotting with your mind, and such) I had to rewind, and zoom in, to get what you was actually talking about 😅 One of the most egregious things about these guys, is they seem to be unaware of what we find appalling with these views they insist on 🤦
Daniel Haqiqatjou delivered a brilliant performance in that debate. He outshone his opponent and made him look uninformed. He was as sharp as a razor and as cool as a cucumber. He definitely demonstrated a great expertise and his passion for the topic. I look forward to seeing more of his debates in the future. Thank you Daniel for being a voice of reason and a beacon of light.
It’s simply absurd to be debating CHILD MARRIAGE! in d 21st century. Win or lose, it’s bad for abduls. I can imagine how many mzlms started doubting/losing faith, and how many left izlm after this embarrassing debate. Daniel should openly be declared a pdf file so his neighbors know to safeguard their baby girls around him
