Why Does Emil In Corpse Bride Resemble A Penguin?

In the 2005 animated feature film Corpse Bride, Emily, the titular deuteragonist, is a reanimated corpse who was a talented and wealthy lady in her lifetime. She was murdered by her ex-fiancé Lord Barkis Bittern and indirectly killed him shortly before gaining her freedom. Emily was likely around 19 years old when she died, adding to the tragedy of her murder as she remained that age for nearly a decade in the afterlife.

Emil, the other servant of the Everglots, appears as the butler or valet but is also seen doing some light cleaning. He is a large-nosed man who acts just as snooty as his own. Emily, the corpse bride, came from heartbreak and tragedy, but she is by far the most beautiful and dynamic character in this film.

Set in a 19th century European village, the story follows Victor Van Dort, a shy and nervous man, who finds himself in an arranged marriage with Victoria Everglot. While practicing his vows in the woods, he accidentally endows a corpse with his engagement ring. The ending of Corpse Bride can be seen as bittersweet, as it combines elements of tragedy and hope.

Director Tim Burton and composer Danny Elfman collaborate using both musical and visual signifiers to create two very different realms that the main characters must traverse: the land of the living and the land of the dead. The film is emotional, full of story and character, and has been a runaway success, with Victor Frankenstein’s first film featuring death heavily.
