Why The Sister Wives Ended Their Polygamous Marriage?

The reality TV show Sister Wives has come to a dramatic end, with Kody Brown, the patriarch of the family, now having just one wife, Robyn. The polygamous marriage between Meri, Janelle, and Christine ended in November 2021, and fans are torn as to whether Robyn or Kody deserved more blame. Some fans believe this was what Robyn wanted all along, while others speculate that Kody deserved more blame.

The show started with Kody’s marriage to his fourth wife, Robyn, the first newcomer to the family in 16 years. Some fans believe this is what Robyn wanted all along, while others speculate that Kody deserved more blame.

Meri Brown, who has been with Kody since the 1990s, has officially ended her spiritual relationship with Kody, leaving him in a monogamous marriage with Robyn. Robyn, who remains committed to making her marriage with Kody work, believes no one should be married while they’re going through a divorce.

In an exclusive interview with People, the cast discusses the idyllic plural marriage ahead of the fallout. Meri officially ended her spiritual relationship with Kody, leaving him in a monogamous marriage with Robyn. The patriarch of the Sister Wives family is now navigating his way out of the polygamous maze, declaring an end to his plural marriage escapades.

In December 2022, Brown and his second wife Janelle announced they were separated and no longer consider themselves spiritually married. The show challenged viewers’ views on what a marriage should look like and showcased the unconventional dynamics of a polygamous family.

Why did the Sister Wives end polygamous?

Going into plural marriage, Kody and his four wives envisioned it as a blissful experience. But they were met with turmoil at practically every step, from jealousy between the wives to children feeling neglected to the legal repercussions that polyamorous marriages face.

I went in with these ideas about how idyllic plural marriage was going to be — but it was really hard, admits Janelle, 54. Meri and I clashed on everything. Kody and I were amazing when it was just us, but the family dynamic was really tough.

As Kodys three ex-wives move forward, they are all trying to keep a positive outlook. Meri, 52, says her future is about keeping the doors open and saying yes. Janelle doesnt have any regrets, noting that the experience is what gave us the life that we have now.

Why did the Sister Wives split?

A common through line for tension in Kodys marriages surrounds his apparent preference toward his fourth wife, Robyn. In 2014, Kody legally divorced Meri so that he could marry Robyn in an effort adopt her children from a previous marriage. Christine has cited Kodys relationship with Robyn as a main reason behind their split, noting that Robyn is her exs favorite wife. During COVID, Kody spent significantly more time with Robyn and her children, noting that they were willing to follow his protocols but his other wives and children claimed those protocols were put there to give him an excuse to spend more time with Robyn.

Time and time again, Kody has called out his other wives treatment of Robyn, saying that they should apologize to her and praising Robyns loyalty to him.

I have somebody in my life whos fundamentally loyal to me, who sees me as the head of the family, Kody told Janelle of Robyn. Im saying to you that you and I get that if youre loyal to me.

Why was Meri fired on Sister Wives?

Before Meri became a reality TV star, she used to work in the mental health industry. Meri was studying psychology and worked with at-risk youth. Meri reportedly lost the job once Sister Wives debuted on September 26, 2010. Meris employer was apparently aware of her polygamist marriage. However, according to InTouch, Meris overnight fame due to the show allegedly became “too much” for her former employer. “They felt that they needed to protect the company, I think,” Meri said during an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show. “It actually makes me really sad because I loved my job. It breaks my heart, definitely…. But I understand where theyre coming from,” she added.

Meri is the owner of Lizzies Heritage Inn where she offers exclusive retreats and tours. Located in Parowan, Utah, the bed and breakfast was a home originally built by her great-great-grandparents Sarah and Charles Adams in 1870. Four generations of Meris family lived in the house until it was sold in the 1980s. It was Meris long-time dream to own it which she did without taking any help from Kody. Meri was able to buy it at $80,000 thanks to the business she did with LuLaRoe clothing. Its named after her great-grandmother Lizzie. Meri had the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 13, 2017.

LuLaRoe is a multi-level marketing company that has been accused of operating as an illegal pyramid scheme. Meri found herself in hot water due to promoting herself as a “LuLaRoe Retailer” to target stay-at-home moms. Meri even supported the companys founders after they became the subjects of LuLaRich, an Amazon documentary. Former consultants and employees alleged the brand led some of its followers to bankruptcy. The owners denied the claims, and the brand is still in business with Meri remaining loyal to them.

Why did Sister Wives’ marriage fail?

  • Lack of connection and quality time ultimately led to Janelle and Kodys split. Kody spent most of his time with his younger wife, Robyn, neglecting Janelle.
  • Kodys neglectful behavior extended to his relationship with his daughter Savanah, as he failed to attend important events and didnt give her a Christmas gift.
  • Christine, another sister wife, noticed the struggles between Janelle and Kody, as she had experienced a similar lack of concern from Kody herself. Her concerns foreshadowed the eventual breakup.

Janelle and Kody Brown from Sister Wives failed to keep their relationship together, but the signs of their split were evident all these years. The 54-year-old Salt Lake City native and the Brown family patriarch tied the knot in 1993. While things initially went well for the polygamous couple, their life changed after Kody married a younger wife, Robyn Brown. Over the years, the fourth wife caused many problems in Kodys other relationships and kept him for herself. Janelle felt that Robyn purposely tried to keep the Brown family apart.

Kody and Janelle were together for decades. After becoming husband and wife in 1993, the pair focused on growing their family. Kody and Janelle welcomed six children in their 30 years together. They first had a son named Logan in 1994. Soon after, the two had Madison, Hunter, and Garrison. The couple took a little break from having kids for three years. However, they were again pregnant in 2001 and welcomed Gabriel. Kody and Janelles youngest child, Savanah, came into the world in 2004. She recently celebrated her graduation in May 2023.

Why is Robyn still with Kody?

  • Kody and Robyn stay together despite their unhappiness to avoid being seen as failures and a laughingstock.
  • They fear loneliness and being without a partner, as they have never been alone in the last ten years.
  • Robyns traditional beliefs and financial dependence on Kody prevent her from wanting to divorce him as well.

Kody Brown and Robyn Brown from Sister Wives dont seem too happy in their new monogamous relationship, but they will continue to stay together regardless. The couple were once very content in their plural marriage. They lived with Kodys first three wives, Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown, and had a stable family that included 18 children. Unfortunately, circumstances changed when Kody stopped distributing his time equally among his wives. He only put effort into his relationship with Robyn, which made Meri, Janelle, and Christine jealous. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 only worsened the situation.

In 2021, Christine decided to pick up her bags and step away from polygamy for good. She began dating again and found her soulmate, David Woolley. Likewise, Janelle and Meri Brown also reevaluated their marital situation in 2022. They followed in Christines footsteps and ended their relationship with Kody. Sister Wives season 18 showed the complete implosion of the Brown family as everyone quit polygamy. The circumstances made Kody angry as he embraced monogamy with Robyn. The Brown family patriarch never wanted his family to break apart but had to accept his defeat.

Why did Meri leave Kody?

Meri and Kody were married for about 14 years. They have one child. In 2014, she divorced Kody so he could marry Robyn Brown and adopt her three older children. They were still married in spirit. In 2015, Meri was the victim of a scam that caused her marriage to Kody to end. Kody said he stopped visiting Meri’s house because he no longer trusted her. In the 2022 Sister Wives season 16 special, Meri said her problems with Kody started long before she was tricked into an emotional relationship with a catfish. Meri said she hadn’t been intimate with Kody for a decade.

Why did polygamy end?

The majority of Americans who were not members of the church were opposed to polygamy as they saw the practice as a violation of American values and morals.20: 192 54: 86 30: 382 Opponents of polygamy believed that polygamy forced wives into submission to their husbands55: 454 and some described polygamy as a form of slavery.54: 117 The overall opposition to polygamy led the Republican Partys platform to refer to it as one of the relics of barbarianism.56bettersourceneeded Sensational and often violent novels provided fictional stories about polygamy which fueled the publics dislike for the practice and Mormons.10: 39–50.

However, some non-Mormons held more positive views of polygamy. For example, after surveying the Utah Territory, Captain Howard Stansbury concluded that most polygamous marriages were successful and there were good feelings between families.57.

John C. Bennett and The History of the Saintsedit. John C. Bennett was a member of the church and close friend of Joseph Smith who was disfellowshipped and later excommunicated for adultery. Following his excommunication, Bennett began to travel around the eastern United States as he lectured about the church. In his lectures, Bennett included claims of sexual misconduct among church leaders, secret rituals, and violence.30: 73–74 In 1842, Bennett published a book entitled The History of the Saints: Or, An Exposé of Joe Smith and Mormonism which includes alleged stories of sexual misconduct by Smith and other church leaders.58 The church responded to Bennetts claims about Smith by gathering affidavits and printing contradictory evidence in newspapers. The women of the Relief Society, encouraged by its president, Emma Smith, also wrote their experiences that disproved Bennetts statements. They also began a petition in support of Joseph Smiths character which they delivered to the Governor of Illinois.30: 74–75.

Does Christine still believe in polygamy?

Christine Brown from Sister Wives loves monogamy and doesnt want to have any more sister wives. The 51-year-old reality star lived nearly 30 years with Kody Brown. She had six children with him and embraced plural marriage with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Kody stopped paying attention to Christine after his fourth wife, Robyn Brown, came into the picture. He began ignoring his other family members, which led them to fall out of love with him. In 2021, Christine boldly decided to end her marriage with Kody. She returned to the dating game and married another man named David Woolley.

Recently, Christine opened up about her current feelings for polygamy and if she ever wants to try it out with her new husband. She said (via Us Weekly), “No, no, no, no. I love a monogamy,” revealing that she has no plans to share her man with other women again. Christine claimed her one-on-one relationship with David is “wonderful and beautiful,” adding that shes “loving” her monogamous marriage. The Sister Wives star also claimed that David doesnt want to try it out either and has always been clear that they wouldnt do polygamy after tying the knot.

Christine did share something positive about her past polygamous life with Kody. She revealed the best thing she ever got from her plural marriage. The mother of six admitted, “I love that living polygamy brought me Janelle,” hinting that her friendship with her sister wife is the best benefit she got from the situation. Christine added, “Shes my sister wife. Shes always going to be my sister wife,” adding that Janelle is part of the package and will always be in her life. She stated that Janelle and David “get along great.”

  • See, during COVID, they could have brought their outside chairs into the yard, kept their distance, and visited. This is how we celebrated my daughter’s 21st Birthday. We all brought our own take-out food and sat in the yard, taking, and sharing stories. It was the best that we could do, and memories were made.

  • Cody is nuts to take on all these wives and children. I can understand why he did not meets the needs of the wives and children. My heart breaks for these kids and this crazy lifestyle. I am happy for the wives and their success. Glad they left Cody. The guy has too much on his plate and needs only one wife. Lesson learned for all

  • See as a non monogamous person I find stories of Mormon/religious polygamy particularly difficult, as a consenting non monogamous person (or more specifically polyamorous) my relationships have always been based in a deep love for the partners and the partners of my partners. I love the people I date, I love the people they date, I’ve never felt pressured into the lifestyle/sexuality. For me as an ASD bi/pan person who was also poly I never understood allot of the jealousy and gaslighting I would see from religious polygamists. I’m poly because I freaking love people, but I also need allot of space (we’re talking space the final frontier amount of space), I’m poly because seeing the lives the people I love build with their partners fills me with happiness (we call it compersion), sure our love lives require allot of communication and scheduling if I’m honest, but it allows me the space and time to pursue a career, be child free (whilst still spoiling my bonus nieces and nephews rotten), it allows me to pursue meaningful romantic relationships, whilst also having the days/ weeks/months of alone time my brain kinda craves. Does polyamory work for everyone? Fvck no, but it works for our little cule and it makes us happy (Also it makes the whole being child free so much easier because my parents have grandchildren to spoil, and I didn’t have to jack to create them, which is awesome 😂)

  • I definitely believe the entire problem was Robyn. She manipulated every situation to push the other sister wives away. And sadly she has manipulated Cody too. He just needs to get rid of Robyn and get a fresh start. Take some serious time alone to reflect. And find a woman that loves him and ENCOURAGES him to be available to his children… and Robyn can go cry those fake tears somewhere else.

  • Here is Kody: Narcissistic personality disorder involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration. Others often describe people with NPD as cocky, manipulative, selfish, patronizing, and demanding. This way of thinking and behaving surfaces in every area of the narcissist’s life: from work and friendships to family and love relationships.\r \r People with narcissistic personality disorder are extremely resistant to changing their behavior, even when it’s causing them problems. Their tendency is to turn the blame on to others. What’s more, they are extremely sensitive and react badly to even the slightest criticisms, disagreements, or perceived slights, which they view as personal attacks. For the people in the narcissist’s life, it’s often easier just to go along with their demands to avoid the coldness and rages. However, by understanding more about narcissistic personality disorder, you can spot the narcissists in your life, protect yourself from their power plays, and establish healthier boundaries.

  • I work while I watch/listen (I draw comics for a living). I am a HUGE fan of Sister Wives but I watched it because it was absolutely fascinating, from a psychology standpoint. I watched one episode years after it debuted, said “Ugh, never mind, I’m done” but then found out they got divorced and kept perusal. perusal the family dissolve was interesting because it seemed inevitable, despite the intentions of the showrunners. Not saying a wished for the family to dissolve, but I did wish the three original wives would find a happier life away from Kody. He really is one of the most toxic people I’ve ever seen in a reality series.

  • I love how he went on US Weekly to try and save face. He said in the interview that he doesn’t care about how the public perceives him, yet he wants Meri to pretend because it makes him look bad. This dude is one of the sickest narcissists I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying something, being that I was raised by one.

  • My friends, when a narcissist (Kody) has no use for you, they will discard you like a piece of trash. Kody took her years(most of her youth) and money, but what brings me solace is knowing that he will ‘reap the seeds that him and Robyn (enabler) sowed.’ Be careful how you treat people, because karma never forgets. Meri gave up so much for that undeserving prick, but she will be alright.👍

  • Kody divorced Meri…when he legally divorced Meri! And in her heart, I think she knew that’s what was really happening back then…which is why she was so distraught and emotional about signing the papers. She knew deep down that the adoption was just an excuse/a sham, to convince her to allow Kody to divorce her, to legally marry Robyn…the only “wife” he ever really wanted. And he seems to be completely oblivious to the way his choices and behaviors have affected ALL the people in his life…not just the women, but THEIR children, too. Such a narcissistic @sshat.

  • There’s comin’ a day, when Kody is least expecting it to happen, when Cryin’ Robyn WILL STOP strokin’ his ego!! Being a puppy dog wife, I just couldn’t imagine how that works!! Kody is the most vile, disgusting, toxic, narcissistic, being, I have ever listened to!! Due to Christine’s finally taking back her power & leaving, I started perusal this show from Season 1. You can legit see when, where, how, who’s, etc, relationships start ripping apart from the seams. Kody acts like a jerk from the first rip & NEVER REALLY tries to repair the relationships!! No wonder the ladies left!!

  • I’m sorry it had to be that blunt…that she couldn’t accept the signs. Christine was right all along: Robyn is the love of his life and there is no room for anyone else. I think Kody is making it 100% more difficult by not being honest, trying to make his behavior everyone else’s fault and kind of rewriting history. Did he really never love Meri? Or is he saying that now only because he feels something completely different for Robyn? Also, would he be singing Robyn’s praises if she wasn’t so exceptionally loyal and differential to him?

  • Mary You were utterly and completely finessed by Robin. She wanted your husband from Day 1. She got him once you divorced him so that her children could be legally adopted, and she has never looked back. You were on your own during Covid. You weren’t invited to 2022 celebrations unless you insisted. “It’s important to Mary that she have a relationship with my children.” -Robin There’s more, but I’ll leave it there. You’re still vibrant. Find a man who wants you. You deserve real love.

  • O.M.G. meri finally got it…hes not only “just not into u”, he doesnt even want u around. but he had to chase her off w/ a gun for her to get the message we all saw for YEARS! but i still wonder if she will actually leave arizona OR get another place so she can “see robin & kodys kids whenever they ALLOW it” wtf???!!!

  • Holy shit this has been painful to watch the past few years and I don’t even keep up with this show regularly but damn. Meri needs psychological help seriously. Who in their right mind stays with a partner situation when said partner CLEARLY wasn’t into them or even really liked them. She walked around like she was in this relationship of her own and EVERYONE ELSE was in some other relationship understanding with her. It’s hard to watch someone be that pathetic. Hard to think maybe just one of the multiple family members had the courage to at least try to tell her to just stop. It’s stalker mentality like a crazy ex that won’t move on after decades of divorce.

  • I’m so happy for Meri that it’s finally been announced that the marriage is officially terminated. For the past few years, Meri has come across as such a pathetic, needy person…and she totally is not that! So I hope she finally takes the steps now to move on with her life as the awesome, independent woman she is❤️

  • Cody seems to forget that what he told Meri is what pushed her to find being Wanted from someone else. Robin and Christine were both pregnant and Meri and Cody went on a hike, they sat down when Meri said she wanted to have another baby. Cody shot her down Cold with No. Meri was Crushed but she was trying to hide it. That’s when Cody started treating Meri like Crap but he still continued to have more children after that. This is when Meri started to look for a Friend and got Catfish. Cody used this and told everyone that this was the reason he didn’t want her and used it as a cover up so that he would Not be looked at as the bad guy. I honestly don’t blame Meri for what she did, I feel bad that she was treated like Crap.

  • Kody is very cruel!! I really dont like him!! How very evil!! To tell Meri, he never loved her to justify loving his soulmate Robyn is very heartless and cruel! If Kody doesn’t care about how the public perceives him then why the explanations. He is trying to convince the public that Christine is bad, Meri is clueless, and Janelle is using him. Kody needs to honest. He only wants Robyn.

  • I stopped perusal the show years ago. Cody seemed to cut each wife off emotionally, denying them emotionally and physically. He may seem to favor Robin but he is denying her the life and sister companionship she wanted so he’s just doing it to her differently. I think he’s a narcissistic Ahole hurting everyone who loves him. Ladies! You deserve someone who wants your love and wants to return it.

  • Meri should show tell all, being Janelle was married to her bother flirting with Kody before Kody even Married Meri, that had to hurt, then top that off Janelle mother marries Meri’s father so now those 2 clamor on to Kody’s family kick Meri in the head twice, then babies pop out and Kody stated he spends more time with the wife when children are born, Kody saw not use for Meri only $$$$ Meri should of Never Married Kody when he flirted with Janelle before she wed Kody and Janelle and Christine make rude remarks about Meri when they got all Kody’s attention and think Meri should kiss their hinnies, they are Karen’s on steroids And Janelle spouts the “Principle” give me a break you went flirting with a man while your married, and never where in the “Principle” neither one of you, so now you at like you are so knowing, when your a Cheater and Big B

  • Meri, you are NOT the victim. No amount of woe is me will change that. We have all seen the articles, the confessionals, the catfish, the divorce! Even stevie wonder could see your marriage was over. You brought Robin in yourself to try and fix your marriage to Kody. Note, never ever do you ever ontroduce a new woman to your husband in the hopes of this fixing your marriage.

  • Meri you are beautiful, amazing, strong and independent woman 100%. Im sure that one day you’ll find true love. You really deserve that. But for now I think thats better to stay just by yourself and get over all this crap in your own mind. After that, you’ll be ready for a whole new life. Im sorry but I have to say that Kody is trash, don’t think about him anymore, you are not worthy of him. I wish all the best to you. Lots of greetings from Finland! 🇫🇮💙🤍🤗
