Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have officially put an end to speculation about their marriage, stating that they are staying together forever. Pinkett Smith revealed last week that she and Smith, who married in 1996, had been separated for seven years. During an interview with GQ, Smith detailed his and Pinkett Smith’s less-than-perfect relationship timeline, including the entanglement, The Slap, and everything else we didn’t need to know.
Jada Pinkett Smith has reached far beyond her famous marriage to open up about her past and present. She shared that she sold drugs as a child and that they broke up within their marriage and got back together again. They had to rebuild with new rules and something way, completely different.
The couple married in 1997 after Divorcing actor Sheree Zampino two years earlier. Smith officially asked for his wife’s hand in marriage in November 1997. In a recent interview with NBC, Pinkett Smith made a bombshell revelation during an interview, stating that the two have actually been separated since the beginning of their marriage.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have endured their fair share of speculation and gossip about everything from their marriage to how they raise their children. Their 20-plus years of marriage have outlasted many Hollywood relationships, but it is far from picture-perfect.

📹 A Deep Dive into The Failed Marriage Of Will & Jada (Seperated For 7 Years)
A Deep Dive into The Failed Marriage Of Will & Jada (Seperated For 7 Years)
Jada is immature, self centered, narcissistic. The biggest problem people have in these situations is they think they are unique. They think their situation is complicated and no one else could possibly understand. Truth is, a normal relationship is unique. Toxic abusive relationships are all pretty much the same.
What ALWAYS gets missed about The Slap was that Will Smith was actually LAUGHING at the joke that Chris Rock had told…right up until the moment he looked at Jada, who was most definitely NOT enjoying the joke. And THAT is when Will Smith suddenly turned ugly, got up out of his chair and proceeded to ruin his reputation forever. She was the inspiration for the slap, NOT the joke.
She’s disgusting… The most disturbing thing is that she is perpetuating her narcissistic behavior in her daughter, who actively defends her mother and claims her mother is a victim. Behavior like this from people in the spotlight sends a horrible message to people who idolize famous people, no matter how bad they are.
Jada is a despicable woman. I do not actually believe that they were separated. She’s trying to make herself feel and look Better publicly. Because everyone lost respect for her for cheating on her husband with the entanglement and then publicly dragging him in the limelight so everyone could make fun of him, she humiliated him. I will go as far as to say. She’s not even a good mother. Her own daughter even said that. But any parent that openly does drugs and encourages them to do so or telling them that it’s OK is a messed up parent.
Same thing my abuser did to me, the humiliation campaign and seeking to ensure there’s payment for some sort of mistake or misstep. Narcissists all have pretty identifiable hallmarks to their abuse and Jada is hitting a ton of them. If it was anywhere near as severe as the abuse I endured, I hope we see them separate sooner rather than later.
That was incredibly well articulated and insightful Dr Grande. I think your characterization of their roles in this mess, as well as their bizarre conception of marriage was spot on. The only thing missing I think is the childhood abuse Will suffered from his father who would beat his mother. I think that profoundly damaged him and made him a sitting duck for a raging narcissist like Jada. But this was a riveting analysis.
I wonder if witnessing his mom be abused during his childhood, and regretting not “protecting her” made him go to the opposite extreme with Jada. Like he’ll suffer for her no matter what. Heard him discuss this in a interview about his book. Does anyone know more about his mom’s abuse and how he internalized it?? Dr. G thanks for covering this!💛💛💛
I think that Will Smith has always been in love with Jada (God knows why) and I think somewhere in his heart he hopes, someday, she will love him if too. If he just holds on long enough she will see what an amazing man he is. I also believe he has been manipulated, abused, and humiliated over the years that he is so trauma bonded to her that it would be a miracle if he were ever to break free from that and heal.
Thanks for validating what I recognized back in 2020 perusal that mind bending round table talk. Will sat there dutifully as Jada disassembled him in public. I lost my interest in her immediately. That red table was just a platform for her to obtain narcissistic supply. Next the slap heard round the world. Jada set Will up for something like this. It’s what narcs do. They will push you to the end of your tolerance tether so that one day you’ll snap and they sit back and watch you implode and self destruct. I can’t stand her and Will, I pray he escapes her mind maze of manipulation just as Johnny Depp escaped another lizard lady.
“Marriage is incompatible with self-centeredness.” This statement here is 🔥 Ppl don’t understand how difficult it is to be married to a selfish, disconnected (and then THAT spouse checks out of the marriage?!) person. We’re still obligated to keep our vows. Bless the married people who struggle in this. Only find freedom and peace in alone time. What a sad place to be! But in Will’s case, he literally is enabling this toxicity.
Jada seems to be a narcissist and Will is the target for her abuse. I’ve never heard her take accountability for anything. She devalues and embarrasses Will on a regular and consistent basis. Normally her stance is the exact opposite of his. She uses her relationship with Tupac to whip Will. That’s her professed soulmate. Will a partner. No. It appears that they don’t agree on much of anything. She’s gaslighting. We all know what we see. She has proven that she’s one person in public and another in private. Narc.
What an excellent synopsis. I’ve always looked at Will Smith as one big joke. It’s difficult for me to take him seriously and as a “real” man. It’s synonymous with being fake. In my opinion. Some relationships are just not good for you, and there comes a time to move on. He made a complete fool of himself with his attack on Chris Rock, which led me to lose all respect, if any, for him. Jada has humiliated him. Toxic relationships are traumatic. Great article Doctor!
The thing is that Jada admitted that she didn’t want to marry will. You get the sense that she maybe never really loved him at all. But I think he is desperately in love with her and always has been. That’s why he has put up with things like her so called entanglement as well as other things that have come out since the slap. It just really sad because sometimes you can really see the pain in his eyes.
Once again- thank you Dr. This is and forever will be my favorite website in YouTube. You are fantastic and meet so many of us in the middle ground we need with intelligent nuance, PERFECT SUBTLE HUMOR, and calmness. I truly appreciate you Dr. Grande & all your analysis and work out into your articles!
Jada comes across as a person with a case of malignant narcissism. Will Smith was the man when I was growing up, and seeing that interview where she emotionally devastates him for views makes me think that her sociopathy, manipulation, and fatalistic outlook has ensnared Will. I foresee their dynamic only getting more insane.
Jada thinks she is the most high knowing and profound person alive. She loves to hear herself talk and does not care at all to throw her husband under the bus. And my god if that lady don’t stop talking about Tupac! His friends say they hadn’t spoke in years when he died. Tupac is probably embarrassed from beyond the grave.
She really just settled with Will when Tupac was killed. He was always the love of her life and basically still is. It’s sad. Will should just leave her for good. She’s not really done anything for him in recent years, only shown how she doesn’t respect him at all. So there’s not really any reason for them to still be together. Thanks for the article Dr. Grande, keep up the great work and take care!
It’s crazy seeing Will on the of set of Focus, starring him and Margot Robbie. He is smiling ear to ear and looks full of life. Crazy how much toxic people can drain you and simply being around emotionally healthy people can make all of that complicated mess go away. Normal relationships in life shouldn’t be agonizing, but a toxic person will persuade you to think they are.
Personally, as someone with abandoment issues I’ve stayed in relationships like this in the past, thinking that if I went along enough with what she put me through, we would come out on the other side stronger. Or that my flaws are singularly why our relationship failed, without taking a hard look at my partner’s behaviour. Will from what I’ve read struggled with similar abandonment issues after his dad left, also similar to me as my dad did the same to us the week I was born. It’s really, really hard to leave relationships like this because you feel like you’re letting the other person down, that you owe them 110% even as they emotionally, kick, drag and spit in your face publicly. Will is an adult and ultimately in control of his own actions, but it’s rather clear just from an armchair observation, that Jada is deeply toxic and manipulative. I think he’s stayed out of hoping she’d eventually form into the woman he wants her to be, but in reality she was never that person for him. And the sooner he accepts that the better off his life and mental health will be.
I don’t understand what is so bad about them having an open relationship if they both agree to it, as they seem to. I don’t see anything wrong with keeping their marriage on paper, it keeps them from having to split up all their assets. They would share children, possibly grandchildren coming, no matter what. Divorce for them might be ugly, but it wouldn’t have to be mutual if Will wanted it. I guess I just don’t get it.
This is a prime example of what a toxic marriage can do. Sometimes it isn’t addiction, problems with the law or abuse. Sometimes it can be the breaking of boundaries and deterioration of morals that make a relationship a prison you won’t leave. Extra info: Jada herself says that Chris came up to her soon after the slap and apologized but she shrugged him off to be with Will.
Reading her book would be more “painful than honest” 😂 Your description of their marriage was so spot on. When I watched their red table talk discussion about their marriage I felt depressed for them. You could easily see the pain in Will. They not only seem to be in a bad marriage, it seems like it’s been torturous. They could call it quits and find love. No one deserves to be in an arrangement like theirs, seems like all of this is such an unnecessary pain to continue through each day. Such a perfect analysis of their marriage. You have an amazing ability to understand and analyze behaviors so accurately, and you’re great at throwing in hilarious jokes, while doing so.😂 ❤️
Rewatch the Oscar footage. Will had been laughing at Rock’s jokes till he looked over at Jada and she gave him the “I’m so hurt and wounded” body language. That’s when he stopped laughing and blew. And I have no doubt she spent YEARS emasculating that man, playing into and manipulating his fears around being a poor protector. I can just hear what she might say in arguments, like when she cheated: “I need a real man. You ain’t no man! Look at you! Who could blame me!” She had know about him feeling weak for not protecting his mom in his childhood and, like a proper narcissist, played into that to gaslight and manipulate him into getting her way. So, as she sat oh so wounded at the Oscar’s from Rock’s jokes, Will thought he could prove to himself and her that he could be a protector at risk of his career, public image, and everything. She is such a horrible person. How could Tupac be her soulmate? She’d have to have a soul!
August was her son’s friend friend. Jada supposedly began a friendship w/him due to her marital problems. Only after that did she have an AFFAIR with her son’s friend. I wonder how this would alter your opinion? It’s clear they’re both in denial, just for different reasons. Jada’s behavior screams of manipulation, avoidance, inability to accept responsibility for her behavior, and fear of losing control or possibly of people finding out who she really is. I wonder how much their unhealthy relationship has damaged their children and their future relationships?
To get an idea just how horrible this woman is….even outside the marriage….someone needs to analyze the episode of her show where she (along with her mom) berate and humiliate her “friend” from Sex & The City for adopting a black orphan. Apparently, that made her “friend” a horrible person and a racist.
Yeah, Jada’s book is right there at the top of my list of books I want to get for my very own, right after I get around to purchasing and reading Spare. I see myself getting both books um, perhaps NEVER. I don’t find myself any more interested in what Jada has to say than I was interested in what the sad little man formerly known as Prince has to say. As for Will Smith, he foolishly set out to accomplish an impossible task because he tried to defend the honor of a woman who has no honor. JPS and WS define the term HOLLYWEIRD!
You were being kind when you called Jada a self centred person. She’s a narcissist and she is devaluing and humiliating her husband at any chance she gets. Will is the one entangled with her and needs to extricate himself from this toxic relationship. He may see a lot clearer once she is out of his life.
My personal opinion, based on her statements and observed public behavior, is that Jada is a narcissist. What I find so ironic is that her company, Red Table Productions, produces Dr. Ramani Durvasula’s podcast “Navigating Narcissism” I appreciate Dr. Ramani’s work so deeply, I just wonder how she rationalizes the fact that Jada, a person who seems to exhibit clearly at least 5 of the required criteria in the DSM for NPD, is sponsoring her show. Or at least her production company is. The irony is spectacular. Thank you, Dr. Grande, for always delivering a thorough analysis, with your inimitable sense of humor and wisdom.
As you were describing the abysmal vortex that is their marriage it was like I could see the exact attributes you were listing and illustrating in the faces, postures and actions of Will and Jada from what I remember of that Oscar’s night. Somewhat uncanny how accurate the description seems, honestly.
I feel so sad for him. He seems to love her so very much, but sometimes that just isn’t enough. Who among us hasn’t loved someone – romantically or otherwise – where it simply wasn’t enough for us to have them, save them, or simply have the love returned? I mean, I haven’t slapped anyone for them, but I certainly know the feeling for someone who simply could not love me back. It hurts.
First time I see your article and I must say that the way you express yourself and the sound of your voice is so calming. New follower here. Now my opinion is that Jada and Will need professional help as to therapy and things like that. They both seem to be punishing each other on the public eye one can only imagine how do they treat each other in their personal private life. We don’t know what’s causing all this but the children has to feel some type of way as well.
I feel sorry for anyone who is in love with a narcissist. By definition they can’t love you they can only love what you have to offer them and once that runs out or they get bored with it they treat you like utter trash as we’ve seen. Narcs almost always cheat but she did with her kids friend and then went on camera IN FRONT of her husband and gleefully recounted it. You think it can’t happen to you until it does because they pretend to be great loving people to get you hooked. Then you keep thinking the wonderful person is going to come back. But the wonderful person was a fake. The creep we see now publicly humiliating her husband and being too proud to be real and say “I’m a cheater that likes 20 year old boys” IS the real her. She tried to make it deep and use fancy words for basic trash behavior as narcs do. If you ever wanted to see a narcissist woman in action now is your chance. Because Will is rich and puts uo with her she knows she will never do better. Unless he is completely insane though a good counselor will be able to help him wake uo. He’ll just have to write her checks but he’s rich and any amount of money to keep a cheating hateful narc out of your life is well spent.
I’ve come to believe whatever their dynamic is is rooted in this: she’s an actress and always was. Will started as a rapper and by the time she got to him, was in TV and film. He already had a couple blockbusters under his belt when they married but I think as time went by she really started resenting how greatly his success as an actor eclipsed hers. As if she views herself as being on his level in a way the record itself fails to show.
I think Will Smith could have independently been a role-model for positivity. He is probably the real deal, good natured and aspiring…which is why she chose him to feed off of. She just sucks all of his masculine energy out of him and uses it for her perverse narcissism. In the teaser interview clip she just did, she can’t help but look pleased and flash her dupers delight smile while recounting that the “narrative” was that “she can make him slap someone with her eyes.”
i remember when my ex wife said she didn’t love me and didn’t want to be with me! i responded well get divorced then! oh no we don’t have to do that was the response. this was after 21 years of marriage. during the divorce i found about three affairs she had with my friends. but she admitted one of them but it didn’t count! as he couldn’t get it up!! it’s crazy!!
Never knew Jada until she came into Will Smith’s life. She clearly wants the world to know about this so her marraige can be monetised. Without Will or Tupac, literally no one will know of her. Her career (or lack thereof) did not take her anywhere. Talking about this just gives her more clout to sell her book. Personally, I dont care about celebs. But her continuously embarassing her husband and marraige for money is sickening
2:19 I did NOT realize how young August Alsina was when Jada and him got together. Since the red table talk where they discussed it happened in 2020, I guess I just assumed it was a more recent “entanglement”. August Alsina being 22, and Jada being 43 back in 2015 makes their relationship even that much more of a weird, gross, and questionable decision on Jada’s part. I do think August Alsina is cute, but even at my age now, 37, I would never be inclined to be romantic or to engage in sex with a person who is in their early 20s.
Jada is just one of those people who want to watch the world burn. It would not surprise me in the least if she had just been stringing him along all this time. She’s always talking about other men, sometimes those that overlapped with this supposed marriage, and it just comes off as her purposefully trying to antagonize Will. He was crying on Red Table Talk, so he obviously has very strong feelings for her, feelings that she hurt. I think the most telling “fly on the wall” moment was when she went live on a social media platform and, completely unannounced, tried to get him to talk about their marriage, but when he refused, she called him foolish. Will is not a perfect person and I’m sure he wasn’t a perfect husband. But Jada is just a manipulative, disingenuous B.
I see it this way- Jada rides on the cloud of Will’s success and fortune and she does not want to give that up. She is a narcissist. Will has some very mutilated skeletons in his closet that Jada has most definitely threatened to expose if he kicks her off his cloud so he is basically being blackmailed into staying married to her. Will is more in line with a borderline, maybe a covert borderline, and Jada being the narcissist helps regulate Will’s emotions and moods. This extremely dysfunctional marriage may end up in a tragedy if they don’t learn how to handle each other’s abandonment anxieties and separate in a healthy way. I wish them the best, but I’ve got my own malignant narcissist who’s currently psychopathic and very dangerous I’ve got to separate from and it’s very scary. I know what it’s like to have supposed skeletons in your closet, only mine were plastic fakes out there by my abuser and his mother to keep me suppressed and in line. I only realized recently they were planted fakes when I went inside and turned the light on. My closest was pretty dusty but nothing else was in it except the dollar store skeletons with the price tags still hanging. Getting my mind right and healthy for the upcoming series of battles is high on my list so to the trash they went. This is an analogy of what I used to be scared of if I left my abuser. Remember this when you feel your being blackmailed but you’re not sure if your guilty or innocent cuz some narcissists use false narratives of your immorality to subdue you and get you to obey.
Will has been abused by this disgraceful woman for years. I hope he gets the help he needs to rebuild his self respect and moves forward. Everyone deserves love in their lives and Will is no different. She will never change. Narcissistic people refuse to look within and therefore growth is impossible. I really feel for their children-witnessing this abuse for their entire lives has got to be difficult.
She can’t admit to herself that her infidelity was wrong and damaging to their relationship so she’s resorted to gaslighting and over rationalization. Will Smith’s slap, in my opinion, was an attempt to show HER that he had her back..an action that he felt (internal) pressure to do, to avoid strife about it at home.. like if he didn’t come to her rescue, so to speak, that she’d have words ad nauseum about him not having done something. He wanted to avoid that, and so the slap.. it’s easier for him to deal with straightforward conflict extrinsic to their relationship, than dealing with her. And I agree with Dr Grande that Will Smith’s action and anger is a manifestation of having endured emotional gaslighting for years.
It needed to be said. Thanks, Dr. Grande for (as usual) saying it so well. I’ve never been married for various reasons but primarily, I never felt the need to have kids. I know many happy, childless couples but the thought of being part of an unhappy couple with kids scares me. Unhappy couples who only stay together for the kids make me sad. Will & Jada have a lot to answer for, but what they have done to their children is unforgivable. Just my opinion. I don’t mean to make anyone angry…
I had the same feeling tbh. Will seems like he’s just flailing along going with whatever jada wants, hoping she’ll realize she wants to only be with him. Despite the fact that everything she wants seems to be hurting him. I guess you could say “simping for her.” I agree at the time of the slap he was likely on edge from whatever was going on with them and in an emotional hypervigilant state regarding their relationship. I’ve seen relationships like this before. Where one just kinda strings the other along “well will maybe we can work this out” “ok I’ll do anything” “ok but I want to be able to do this that and blah blah blah” will is clearly not happy but agrees and basically is like “ok so we’re gonna be together still then?” And she’s probably saying something like “well we need to take it slow and we’ll see where things lead.” Or some other noncommittal answer. I can almost guarantee their relationship has this kinda dynamic.
Dr Grande, Will Smith did and interview when he younger (before he was married) with, I believe, it was Denzel Washington and he said that all he wanted to do was make so much of money so that when he got married his wife would NEVER leave him, because he had his heart broken as a teenager by a girl and didn’t want it to ever happen again. Jada never loved Will Smith. The only person she ever loved was Tupac. She says it and her kids know and have written letters about it (they are public). She said her marriage day was the WORST day of her life, she cried all day and her mom had to convince her to go through with it. Will, on the other hand, his biggest dream in life was to get married and have a family. He said the day he got married was the BEST day of his life. From DAY ONE he was trying to convince her that he was the one. She wanted to ‘re-define’ their marriage and consulted with a “therapist” who told her that cheating was good for a marriage, that’s what she meant by “re-design”. She wanted to an excuse to cheat but Will never wanted that. That’s why he was crying for the world to see. He was devastated. Will Smith just wanted a family and children. He is a man that will endure disrespect, infidelity etc. just to stay with his wife. It’s sad!
Dr.Grande, this is my first time commenting on one of your articles (I have watched countless articles of yours – I’m a huge fan). This article was awesome – it’s one of my favourite of all of your articles. You made great points, you’ve made sense of a what appears to be a very messy relationship between Will and Jada. Best of all, you made me LOL several times with your excellent humour. Please keep up the excellent work. Thank you 🙏
All of this honestly just breaks my heart. Will Smith is one of those people that lights up the room. He was a star from the day he was born. Jade, on the other hand, is none of those things. She’s jealous and that’s just what narcissists do when they’re envious of someone…they seek to destroy them. He’s pure and loves fully. What should have been a beautiful attribute turned into his downfall. She’s literally killing him. Taking one sliver at a time until there’s nothing left. She’s disgusting and vile. Her and Amber Heard are basically the exact same person. Both Will and Johnny deserve SO much better.
She’s his gatekeeper. She also resents him for it. She’s not helping the situation but I do think if Will shakes her up, she will spill ALL the beans. This is also why she feels so free to disrespect him. There’s a lot more to these two and while I think she’s an unsettled, discontented person, she does what she does because she is allowed to. I don’t think anyone wants to peel back too many layers on this relationship.
I love it when Dr. Grande doesn’t hold back! I AM surprised that he didn’t call Jada a narcissist or Will a masochist. I get the impression (mostly from that train-wreck, ‘Red Table Talk’) that Jada didn’t ever want to marry Will in the first place and she reminds him of this constantly, like he won some vast eternal prize from Heaven or something. These two have done so many appearances together over the years, and you know what? In all that time, he clearly loves her, but I have NEVER felt love for Will come forth from that woman! I think Will Smith is a masochist and until he realizes that he doesn’t have to live with all that shame, will he divorce her. I think he absolutely should divorce her, but I wouldn’t put it past her to take as much $$ from him as humanly possible. She just wants to hurt him. I don’t know why; maybe it’s in her nature.
I’ve kept myself away from any news about this couple for years, but I appreciate the analysis, Dr. Grande! I think they both seem to be deeply flawed individuals who decided to chain themselves to each other and make their problems everyone elses’ problems as well. Unfortunately their children are the most impacted by their messy relationship/partnership, but hopefully the example of what NOT to do will be helpful if any of them decide to choose marriage.
Will seems unable or unwilling to extract himself from a painful and humiliating relationship, one which no one would blame him for leaving. What holds him there? Maybe he is a hostage, she has something on him that he feels obliges him to stay, due to guilt or shame. Maybe he simply cannot bear the idea of divorce, not wanting to be in that category. Maybe he is reliving childhood experiences, like a narcissistic mother, and this has led him to emotionally validate Jada’s perspective.
Excellent article, I enjoy your articles very much. To tell the truth, this subject with Will and Jada hurts. Will is someone I grew up looking up to. To see him acting in a destructive nature (the slap) was upsetting. I have seen many men destroy themselves over a woman. I hope to see Will with another woman. I hope he does something or anything she doesn’t like. It’s like perusal a person in a mentally abusive relationship. Everyone says he must have done something wrong. He needs to bring it to the light if so. It’s like a person destroying another person. That person being destroyed is making excuses.
Marriage can mean different things to the couple involved, and every marriage has its good days and bad days. But the commonality between all marriages is a partnership, where the 2 people together have something positive, that they would not have separately. It is sad that Jada and Will do not have this, and they seem oblivious to the positive aspect that a marriage should have. They could afford to have the best marriage counselor, but counseling only works if both people are willing to listen and change.
Jada is so evil..she doesnt want to ever let Will go. She wants to harm him, entice him, destroy him. The fact this many years have gone by & Will still hasnt learned to leave her shows how her sickness has poisoned him too. This is definately one.of the most disturbing relationships I have ever seen. A marriage on paper is just that…..and nothing more. The fact Jada said she thought the slap was a skit is beyond imsanity. Hey Jada…you may have gaslighted & demoralized Will, but that sh*t wont fly with any of us.😆
Will & Jada have been living a married life under their terms what they believe is marriage to them. We are just now understanding what they mean. Not only that they have been raising the kids the unconventional way and that has not been going great. Their kids have been crying out for help with subliminal cries. Jada is even ruthless to her own kids parading around with an sexual relationship with her son friend publicly with no care of how her son will be teased and made fun of.
It’s not in Jada’s interest to divorce Will. Of course there’s the tens of millions of dollars he would have to pay out to her but I think what she’s trying to protect is worth much more to her than the all the money and freedom she’d get if they were to divorce. And by the way Dr. Grande.. your analysis on the publisher reviews of Jada’s book got me bursting out laughing 🤣 your intellectual humour is truly amazing.
Wise analysis, Dr. Grande. Two things that I believe: Will grew up with a physically abusive father. He must have hoped for a happier family when he married Jada. I feel that he is now emotionally abused by Jada in this marriage. Despite Will’s enormous success, he remains as vulnerable as he was as a child. I think Jada, while beautiful and a capable actress, desires a similar level of success and fame as her husband. That level of success hasn’t happened to her individually, but as long as she is still connected to Will, she is a part of a Hollywood “power couple.” Thus, she is hesitant to divorce him. I have not yet read the excerpt of her book in this week’s “People”, but I wonder if she also had a difficult childhood. I just wish that while they are forever connected for life by their two children, wouldn’t joy be better if they learned how to be friends while divorced? How I wish you, Dr. Grande, or someone could counsel them together and separately – though I think they would be lvery challenging patients!
I dont believe one bit that she didnt want to get married and cried. Pure manipulation. She was keeping him on his toes by letting him know that she didnt want to be doing this whole marriage thing. She was letting Will know I’m doing this all for you and you’re lucky to have me, so don’t step out of line – got it?! So then she agrees to never ever, no matter what, never get a divorce? Give me a break. She now has all the advantages of being married to Will Smith but none of the responsibilities. She’s got this poor guy wrapped around her finger.
I agree, they shouldn’t be held up as positive role models. Beyond themselves, their children and other close family members, why would their relationship or any other celebrities relationship be important to the general public. Neither of them have a healthy dose of good common sense and I’m not surprised that she maybe manipulating any situation to suit her circumstance at any given time. As always thank you for the article. Cheers!
Will is addicted to being emotionally abused and like many victims keep apologizing for triggering his abuser and for not being good enough. There’s something we don’t know that’s responsible for this low self esteem. Im sure at some point Jada will reveal this cause why not ensure the man never trusts any woman again. He needs very serious therapy preferably without her. Though I suspect even though they divorce Jada will continue to reveal new aspects of his life inorder to remain relevant. I bet she takes further blows at his rep in her book. She desperately needs him to be seen.
“The real fantasy is that the belief that they can define a new type of relationship that meets all possible needs that they could have. Whatever they are doing does not appear to be working but they want CREDIT for being fully committed to their strategy of failure.”👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 This was the bed summation of their relationship. When they went on Oprah in the 90s and told us how their marriage was open and it was us that was closed minded I knew they were full of it. Thank you for the words. Also that you for including Will in the equation. Will and Jada are both culpable.
10:35 You asked…. here’s MY ANSWER: Well, traditional families, such as the ones these two actors come from, EXPECT their kids to get married and have their own family. One of the main benefits, I would speculate, is meeting minimal family expectations and reducing the pressure and origin-family stresses that such expectations can produce when one is single or “uncommitted.” With this jelly-form commitment that they seem to have, it would still probably sort of shut up most of the concerned members in the two families — one can easily imagine.
In both cases, there is one common denominator – The lack of a father on both sides growing up. For Jada, the lack of a father figure that could inspire her and teach her how to respect good men, and on Wills side, the lack of a father to teach him personal boundaries and to be assertive when needed. This is why Jada is such a dangerous narcissist, and why Will does not know when enough is enough. I’m sure the lack of a father in his life made him want to compensate, and coupled with good intentions made him think he could save any female no matter how broken she is. Sorry Will, you can’t.
this is why i dont “look up ” to celebrities and their marriages, people show you what they want to show you, what they allow you to see, idk why people act like celebs are perfect and if they’ve been “together” for 20 years then they know everything, jada didnt just overnight turn into a self centered a hole, shes always been that way, people ignored it until Will started acting out of heartbreak then they want to act like shes horrible now, shes been horrible the whole time, she never deserved to be “famous” shes a sad woman and absolutely nothing to idolize
I’m just beyond baffled that she’s acting like some victim being in a loveless marriage, even though she’s the one got put on blast for having an affair with another man while legally marring. Don’t care how long they’ve been separated, that is still adultery. If you’re that miserable being married to the damn man then divorce him and go back to the streets!! I’m always going to suspect Jada have career ending dirt on Will because no high value man of his caliber will EVER tolerate this level of embarrassment from their wives.
I watched this with my husband. His response to this article was “I love to see Dr. Grande analyze you. If he can figure you out then there might be hope for married men yet!!!” We laughed and laughed and laughed together and he continued to laugh his entire way to the 🐕🦺🏚️ 😂😂😂 just kidding, hes right beside me, laughing at this comment, God help him, he loves me and i love him for it 🥰
Remaining “married” to Will is the only way Jada continues to shine and seek sympathy. Without Will as a light, she never gets to see her shadow. She doesn’t love Will. She loves the attention and sympathy she gets from blaming her insecurities and inadequacies on him. Just clearing any confusion anyone might have.
Right on the money, Doc! You said it. When I look at them, it strikes me that Jada is coldly strategizing, while Will is emotionally reacting. He has hot passions, she has none, cold as a fridge in December. I will choose passions any day over coldness. She has her emotions under tight control, and he is emoting all over the place. Classic Narcissist/ Victim scenario. He does her bidding. He is full of shame, confusion, anger, wanting to find that perfect love he had before, and looks very gaslighted to me. I had been married to a Malignant Narc who is also bipolar. Yikes! Its a terrifying combination. What they do, the Narcs in your life, is pull strings and move the puppets. I realized I was being controlled, lied to, shamed, and confused because I thought it was my fault things were going south in our marriage, and I got the silent treatment very often – passive aggressiveness. I see that with them too. She controls herself, and he spins out of control with his emotions. I really feel for him. He needs to see this and get out now, as fast as possible. The kids are lost now. They will most likely be Narcissists too, or very tainted by her. If he leaves her, she will alienate the kids from him, and turn them against him, so he should either walk away from all of them, or try at all costs to keep them in his life. The pain that Jada caused him so far, is NOTHING compared to the savagery and visceral agony of having alienated kids, as it happened to me. You are painted as the bad guy, the abusive one, etc.
While it might not be obvious to you, Will and Jada are first and foremost actors. Literally, their profession is convincing other people that they aren’t who they say they are. Even the most dedicated actor can’t keep up a facade forever. They’re also raising two kids (with varied results) and a lot of couples married in name only will stay together for the children. The fact you missed these in your analysis is further proof therapists are just detectives who treat crime scenes like they’re looking at abstract art.
It’s all about Will’s closeted gayness and the fact that he got caught by Jada. The naive thought that sexual orientation is something that can be altered or “cured from” is also why Will and other well known closeted actors has joined in the cult of Scientology. Becoming outed is Will’s biggest fear in life, something he thinks would destroy his life and would cause him having to face the identity mess, not only publicly, but personally in his own broken, deeply self loathing mind. He would then finally have to face the demons he has run away all his life. Jada knows all this and therefore has Will’s balls, perhaps quite literally, in a vice.
Jada has played in movies 🎬 like Set it Off, Woo, Collateral Damage, The Matrix(the revolution), Ali, Scream 2, she’s done some voice overs in animations like Madagascar, but she started out in the 80s playing on a show call A Different World a sitcom based on Blk students in college. She has other accolades. She’s known for being friends with the late rapper 2Pac as well. They actually went to the same art school before 2Pac was well known. Just saying for those that didn’t know.
I’ve never liked Jada since the day she was discovered. She’s from my area and I’ll never forget seeing her and she had such I stink attitude. When I was a teen I attended an art school and wanted to become an actress. She was interviewed on the radio and the host asked her what advice would you give young people trying to break in the industry and she gave a snobby remark that wasn’t helpful to any student. Will needs to pay Chris and divorce her. I’m sick of seeing her bald head yapping away a bunch of lies.
I moved to SoCal in 2012. But came in 2009 to visit and met a guy who was a big wig for Fredricks of Hollywood. He was an odd guy. Crossdresser. Just a neighbor. But he went to lots of parties with the oddballs of Hollywood and the first name he mentioned was will smith. TIFWIW but he had pics from parties on his wall.
I guess a lot of people have different views and experiences in relationships. Sometimes you are with someone who holds a candle for someone else or they are immature with the relationship in a serious way. Like when an 35 year old is dating a 25 year old. Perhaps they shouldn’t be married, because of the maturity level of their commitment with each other, and let’s say they also have children together. I can see it, but I know a lot of people more myopic than I am who would instantly declare that the couple should divorce. But that’s their feelings and we really don’t know what Jada and Will feel about each other in the privacy of their home. Some people stay together for the sake of their children. Some people are much more in love than their partners and may stay with them while holding out hope that the other person grows into their feelings. Either way, whatever relationship Jada and Will have is their own business, and we are just distant observers with our own thoughts on the validity of relationships that we find tolerable and fulfilling.
I find it so weird that people address Jada’s actions in the marriage and conveniently skip right over Will clearly hinting to an open marriage years before this happened. Will has said openly that he’s been unfaithful and that’s he’s done all the things she accused of doing…yet she’s the only villain…people just hate that a man won’t throw his wife out like trash for doing EXACTLY what he does 🤦🏾♀️
Youtube should introduce multiple likes option. Every sound assessment should get an additional like, which in this case would result into many, many likes. People should stop following celebrities, take accountability and start informing themselves about narcissistic, self-centered personalities. Such a destructive spirit, learn how to identify them and how to protect yourself.
Many couples remain married and one lives upstairs while the other lives downstairs. My husband and I don’t live in that manner; however, I know ppl do that. Guess what? It’s their business and at least they remain married and show up for each other which is more than most of you can say about your 26 minute relationships. The Smiths have been married 26 years.
Yeah Dr grande you’re definitely missing a few parts… if you pay attention to the full entanglements article they discussed the separation but everyone ignored it to drag the open relationship they both agreed to… also something everyone’s missing is what Will said in 2018… he said they don’t called each other husband and wife and no one cared but when she says it, it’s the end of the world.
I 100% think her suicidal declaration is part of her narcissism, not depression. People like her fish for validation constantly because she sees no good in anyone else… only herself. She needs people to tell her how great she is. Suicidal declaration = guaranteed way to get a TON of validation that she’s perfect just the way she is.
😭ngl Leo thank you soooo much for your lil inputs of relationship advice, I just recently got out of a very toxic relationship in which my boundaries were CONSTANTLY overstepped & I’m just so happy that you share my same views when it comes to a relationship, it should be a partnership. You’ve honestly helped me get over my depression in a way I can’t describe and I’m just so happy to see your articles each and everyday, you have honestly made my dark world alittle brighter.
As a person with androgenic alopecia, please be careful with what you say. Alopecia isn’t just missing spots and you don’t notice it on everyone the same. I’ve had a biopsy and had a 3rd opinion and I have it and I don’t have patches. It’s thinning of your hair as well, and for some, like myself, it’s slow but you can notice it and it can mess with you mentally. Just wanted to make the comment since some things you said didn’t rub me the right way. Besides that, another great article that got me through cleaning lol thank you!
I agree with you about parenting, Leo. I ended a toxic marriage of 17 years and remain committed to being a great co-parent with my ex. Additionally, my kids are a huge factor in all my decisions about work and dating because it’s always at the forefront of my mind that I have three small kids; I don’t have the luxury of it all being just about me. There are three other tiny lives that are completely dependent on me and my choices to be okay. They don’t stop mattering just because things weren’t good with their dad. Believe me, there are times I wish I could be more selfish. But every time I’ve seen a parent become more about what’s good for them, excluding what’s best for their kids, it’s ended in trauma. And I want better for my kids. So they are always part of my equation.
Will always said he will NEVER divorce. He wouldn’t divorce his first wife either, he had to be pushed heavily to it. I think Jada and Will have a family, a great friendship & business partnership, and this is just the way they choose to live. Will could leave, I mean he’s had girlfriends for far longer than we have heard about Jada being with others. I think they mutually benefit from this and this is what they chose. I don’t think Will is this pathetic heartbroken man that many would think. Imo his “morals” won’t let him divorce, so they are open and it’s of enough benefit to him that they just keep it this way. Just my take though! ❤
Alopecia just means hair loss. Alopecia areata means hair loss in bold patches kind of way. Alopecia totalis means complete hair loss of the scalp. Alopecia universalis means complete hair loss all over the body. Alopecia is not a disease, but a symptom. There can be many different reasons for hair loss as mentioned in previous comments. And yes, for some of these alopecia forms it is possible for the hair to grow back. And maybe fall out again. And grow back again. I’ve been going through this cycle of loss and growth for 20 years.
Once upon a time I was engaged to a narcissist ho was also a public figure. He made me lie about our relationship because it didn’t fit the image he wanted portrayed of himself. He’d have me sitting in his mother’s kitchen wedding planning one day, and then threatening to break up with me if I told anyone outside our family about our relationship the next. I stayed because I was afraid to be alone, and honestly afraid of what people would say/the sunk cost fallacy–I’d invested so much time and energy in, I had to see it through. Its possible, Will is in a similar situation; he and Jada may still be together, but he may be just playing the role she’s told him to play this week in order to keep his family together.
